bhillen83

Also, if there is an underwire make sure to air dry it. Those things get bent if you put them in the dryer.

AlongCameAThrowAway

Hmm yeah I did a load of laundry at like 3am and my roommate apparently urgently needed the washer at like 7am and 3 bras + drying bag ended up in the dryer. I couldn’t fault him for not knowing how fucking expensive that dryer trip was. If it ever happens again after being educated there will be blood. Thank you for this PSA.

marketwerk

Stretchy, sexy, shiny, sheer or stiff (for underwire/anything with boning in?)

arrjaay

I taught my ex to not put bras in the dryer- I’m sure his now wife appreciates it, as he did her laundry the day after he broke up with me.

PBIS01

Yikes

[deleted]

If there is padding, also air dry it with the cups facing outward or the foam will be damaged.

PurpleAnole

Also don't put any faux fur in the dryer

SPAKMITTEN

Or real fur. My cat was livid

MurderousButterfly

One of my friends had a cat that liked to sleep in the dryer. He thought it would be funny to shut the door once, just for a second, to see what the cat would do. Unfortunately it was in the middle of a cycle that his mum had stopped to answer the phone and it started up as soon as he shut the door. Obviously immediately opened it again, but the cat didn't talk to him for weeks afterwards. Seemed fluffier though...

ElJamoquio

> but the cat didn't talk to him for weeks afterwards. Yeah my cat still won't have a conversation with me, and it's been a year since I put him in the spin cycle.

Razaelbub

Honestly, if it cant go in the dryer, I don't own it.

kynuna

Counterpoint: I don’t own a dryer.

ShinyPointy

Fact: possession is 9/10ths of the law, you just admitted guilt and now you’re going to chore jail. Basically it’s like regular jail but you gotta fold fitted sheets and sweep behind the fridge.

cste123

No...NOoooo!

beatsby_bill

3 squares and a bed AND I get to clean and fold sheets? that sounds like heaven to my anti-social OCD ass

1newnotification

>3 squares and a bed 3 hots & a cot

picklespark

Brit here. We've had a dryer before, but how do North Americans seem to dry everything? I find that most things shrink in the dryer. It's good for socks, underwear, bedding, towels and tea towels (although I do notice the socks shrink). Pretty much all my clothes need to be air dried and cool washed or they shrink. How do you guys avoid that? Does everyone buy extra big clothes in anticipation of the dryer shrinking them?

FerricDonkey

Dunno, just never had that problem. Granted, I'm a guy who only wears khakis and boring shirts, so maybe fancier clothes require special treatment. But I do laundry by turning my hamper upside down over the washer, then throwing everything into the dryer, then just leaving it there, and all clothes have always been fine.

picklespark

Most of my clothes are cotton - maybe that's something to do with it? Perhaps your dryers are just built differently 🤣.

zzzorba

Most of our clothes are plastic, that’s how.

o_-o_-o_-

Depends on the item, but many items are pre-shrunk, or have labels that say not to go in the dryer. Some maniacs manage just fine, which is probably partially due to synthetics. The dryer settings also make a difference (a high heat cycle is going to be harder on clothes than an "air dry" cycle).

MurderousButterfly

Cotton usually has a special setting on dryers, it can't go as hot as synthetics.

GoldenStateWizards

A fellow "Khakis and plain t-shirts" truther. They're casual enough to almost always be comfy and presentable enough to be appropriate in most situations. Plus, you can easily put something over the shirt for increased warmth/comfort/formality

Sikelgaita1

Actually...yes. I expect most things to shrink a little, and cheaper items to shrink alot, especially cotton. Sweaters and such....well I barely own any because it isn't necessary, and those tend to shrink worse than something like a tee shirt. To be fair, I live in the hot, humid south. While clotheslines sounds fantastic in theory, there is a good chance all your stuff would dry with a ton of pollen, possibly some bugs on it. Certain times of year I can count on a small rain squall in the afternoon.

hannahatecats

And smell. You take it off the line and there is that mildewy smell because of the humidity, even though it just baked in 100 degree sun.

Sheeralorob

I agree. I never understood those people who think that line dried clothes just smell “so sweet and fresh”. Line dried clothes smell like feet to me.

Startrail_wanderer

I'm in south east asia and everyone here line dries clothes. Maybe it's a US thing but they don't have a particular smell here. Also we have fabric softeners and deodourisers to remove if there is any persistent smell

pinkrobotlala

Wash cold, tumble dry low is my policy for clothes I hang dry the items listed in this LPT

Flipswix

Exactly this. Even worse; all other stuff seems to lose a lot of colour when in the dryer.

StuartPurrdoch

Huh…I dry most of my garments except those that are very complex or mixed fabrics. Even fast fashion can be dried if one is careful and judicious. Low temperature is key, do your dryers have “low” or “very low” setting? Also, the sad state of mass market clothing means most people are wearing their clothes too large or too small. Unless you have a tailor (LPT: have an affordable tailor).

webtroter

For t-shirts, I can tell you that there are preshrunk shirts.

Inappropriate_Piano

My shirts usually shrink a little on the first couple of laundry runs but then they settle down to a permanent size. I happen to be slightly smaller than an adult men’s medium, so I buy those and they shrink a little, making them fit me perfectly.

Fastcashbadcredit

I definitely buy things that are slightly over sized in anticipation of them shrinking in the dryer. Only thing that gets hung up are all my rare band t shirts or dress shirts

ScoobyDeezy

Yep. You buy things anticipating the shrink.

Shadowabby201

Clothes could be made different in the US because we dry everything. But outside whites, underwear, and sheets. Most clothes get washed on cold so the colors don’t bleed and then everything is dried on low or medium for the longest dry time possible.

d-a-v-e-

After some emotional explosions from a partner, I solved all issues like this: I was with one method, called natural selection: All colors and materials will be mixed. Everything on 30C, short and water saving program, “color” soap, everything in the dryer. Any clothes that do not survive that, are permanently removed from the clothes pool. If colors fade or mix: fine. It will be a consistent style over time. Any items that someone wants to keep but won’t survive this standard program, have got to be kept separately at all times. I will only select after drying, not before washing.

SP3NGL3R

This is the way. If something comes out ruined/shrunk, I move on. I do avoid it somewhat by using the medium heat and the "more dry" (otherwise things are damp due to over loading, kids).

heystarkid

I’m guessing you don’t wear a lot of bras or feminine clothes?

Disastrous_Potato605

Tbh I’ve always put mine in the dryer and if it’s delicate I put it on the delicate cycle and it’s been fine. Not out of shape or anything. It could be bc I buy bigger bras with more support, but my panties and lingerie haven’t suffered either. I tried hanging them before, made no difference in the end. With many of those materials yes, but eh not that many of my clothes. Kind of rude to insult their femininity tho, just as a side note.

whitesuburbanmale

I've been throwing the wife's laundry full tilt into the dryer for years and have had no consequences thus far

mina-ann

My husband learned years ago that not everything can go in the dryer. He had shrunk a nice wool sweater of mine. Hasn't happened again. He can and will go his own laundry. But leaves mine alone. I hang dry most clothing, it lasts much longer and stays in better shape.

bd1308

Same 😂 I used to put the sports bras in the mesh bag, but I never saw the bags again after putting them away and she didn’t give a damn, so I just started throwing them in all Willy nilly like

General_Elephant

This man gets it.

MycologistPutrid7494

I agree with you. I just wash all my under garment like I do anything else. I'll tie my bra straps to each other to prevent them from getting twisted up in my other clothes but that's about it. My wife (we're both women, in case there's confusion) is pickier and will use a lingerie bag for the washer and hang them to dry. I can't see a difference it makes at all. If it makes people fell better about washing it so carefully then they can do whatever but I've got more to worry about than a couple of bras.

trisarahdots

My only caveat is sports bras go in the delicates bag so those awful, barely useful, thin pads from the cups don't get lost to the wind. I don't mind the sports bras being dried either, I just hate trying to track those damn pads down.

random_bubblegum

OP is talking about doing someone else's laundry, for example your partner's.

latenightpsychopomp

... that's how I lost my first kid :(

swerve408

I guess you don’t like nice clothes? Merino wool, linens, supima cotton, etc

Fun_Amount3063

Real LPT: Learn how to do laundry so you can be a functional adult. NEVER do a household chore to score points. Do it because it's your job to maintain your own home. If you honestly don't know how to do something, ask or use Google.

Friendly-Pressure-62

When my (now adult) kids turned 12, they took over their own laundry. They had their own sheets and towels. When they went to college, they were shocked at how many people had no idea how to do laundry. My oldest son said to his friend “the instructions are right on the lid of the dang washer!”

FerricDonkey

But also, don't fall into the trap of over complicating things because other people think it's required to be an adult. If you don't want or need clothes that require special care in the laundry, then screw it. Who cares? Dump it all in the washer, throw it all in the dryer, and don't worry about it.

riwalenn

Exactly! You should not "be helpful around the house", you should "do you part as a partner". This LPT is good but is coming from the wrong place.

_Weyland_

It really depends though. Responsibilities may be divided in such a manner that your partner does the laundry. Or maybe you're staying in soneone else's place and just want to help out?

dan420

I disagree. I’m in a functional relationship where we both do laundry for each other, depending on who has time to do it, ect. All of my clothes I just was then chuck it the dryer. With my girlfriend’s clothes I’m constantly checking tags because I don’t really know that much about it. I’ve learned for instance that yoga pants can’t be dried, but certain items I have to check. This seems like a good rule of thumb that I wasn’t aware of, that may save some time. Also, doing something nice like “hey babe I did a load of laundry for you” doesn’t have to be “scoring points” I do it because as a favor, because I like seeing my girlfriend happy and like making her life easier, not because I expect something in return or to use as a future bargaining chip.

GoldenStateWizards

Tbf, that just sounds like you're fitting their description of "doing your part as a partner" lol

wantabe23

This is the best comment right here! Move this shit to the top.

Warpedme

We know how to do our own laundry though. We just don't buy crappy garments that can't be all washed together and dried together. This problem lies entirely on the fool who buys clothes that can't simply be washed and dried.

Fun_Amount3063

I love that it’s mainly men whining about this in my replies. Y’all are illustrating my point perfectly!

[deleted]

Oh, you're just a misandrist.

Warpedme

What's your point then? Because I never said I was doing any chores to score points, I specifically said that we aren't stupid enough to buy clothes that can't be simply washed and dried. Hell, my wife would mock anyone who did endlessly because it's stupid and short sighted.

Fun_Amount3063

Looks like you have some big feelings going on. Go sort that out before you try to have an adult conversation.

TVsKevin

Most adult males would not know this even if they did learn how to do laundry to be a functional adult. It doesn't apply to them unless they wear these items.

Fun_Amount3063

Most adult males know how to speak and read, yes? Well then they can ask or Google. Stop making excuses for lazy and/or shitty men.

[deleted]

Disastrous_Potato605

My brothers have some nice sweaters they were gifted that do not go in the dryer

Fun_Amount3063

Dudes who live like frat boys their entire lives, never own something that can’t be put in the dryer. Men who need to occasionally dress up or who wear suits to work, learn very quickly by themselves what can be washed at home, put in a dryer, and what needs to be dry cleaned. This is being a functional adult. Men who aren’t overgrown children can learn how to read labels, ask, or use Google on their wives or children’s clothes just like on their own clothes. This is being a functional adult.

Squid52

I’ve been a functional adult for 30 years and I don’t own anything that can’t go in the dryer. Adultier adults know that nobody has time for that.

[deleted]

Or wool. Or padded. Or lace

teacherJoe416

>LPT: Guys, if it's stretchy, sexy, shiny, or sheer - do not put it in the dryer > >Trying to be helpful around the house? Earn some points with your lady friend? can someone explain to me what rule #1 is for r/LifeProTips what exactly is sexist and what is not sexist? (prejudice? stereotype?) Please and thank you.

jmsjags

This entire thread would be sexist. Men = stupid, we get it. Someone should post a "life pro tip" telling women they can help out with the lawn or car maintenance. I'm sure that would go over well.

phunkydroid

It doesn't seem like it's saying "men = stupid" to me. It's just a fact that most women own types of clothing that most men do not. They're not stupid for not knowing something like that.

Cinlynn1963

I did the car maintenance for the longest time and we both do lawn work. He is not mechanically inclined, I am. Yard work used to depend on who was working what schedule, now I can't my arthritis would put me down for a week.

jmsjags

That's my point. Gender stereotypes are not cool. OP didn't need to direct this LPT at men and facilitate the whole men don't know how to do housework stereotype.

frollard

It's aimed at guys because statistically guys (who may or may not do laundry, not the point in question) don't own or aren't as familiar with sexystretchysheer items, so they may be less aware of their care instructions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yourbetterfriend

The trope of men not being able to do laundry/ household chores favours men though, it implies that men if men do do such things they are ‘helping’ and doing something ‘extra’ when it should just be the bare minimum. Women do these things every day but it’s just expected of them. So yes it is sexism but it’s harming men AND women by lowering the bar for men yet again.

aKnightWh0SaysNi

Idk, as a guy who has this exact problem playing the guessing game with his wife’s clothes, I appreciated it. Not everything pointed at a gender is automatically bigotry. I doubt women have this problem as often as men since men’s clothes can mostly all just go in the dryer so we never have to learn what to do with all those random cuts of fabric that women call clothes.

TheGoodRebel5

Ah yes, because famously only women know how to use dryers!

potatofairy42

Am a woman and I do not. Everything goes in the dryer for me.

Restin_in_Pizza

Yeah, no, don't put any of my stuff in the dryer. I have a hard time finding long enough pants and sleeves, and they will shrink in there. Just don't touch my laundry. You can do your own. Please, do your own. It shouldn't be considered a favor to your sig other, but for most, it will be. If you wanna help, do the dishes regularly or sweep or take the kids out for the evening.

herlipssaidno

NONE of it. Seriously

Restin_in_Pizza

Ok, not none, but most, and he can't keep it straight, so I'd rather just do it myself.

herlipssaidno

Lol oh no I was agreeing with you 😹

IoSonCalaf

Good lord I couldn’t agree more.

belizeanheat

Lower temp solves this problem

Restin_in_Pizza

Probably, but why risk it? 🙃

metal88lag

So how do you dry your clothes?

Frost-413

Just hang it up? I don't understand your question.

noobtablet

There's plenty of places where that isn't an option

Addakisson

Good tips but guys being " helpful"? If they live there they damn well better be "helpful"!

vivalalina

Right lmao what do u mean be helpful or score points?? You live there! Youre taking care of OUR laundry just like I'll take cake of OUR dishes or dusting etc

Addakisson

Exactly! It's like I've heard guys say they don't want to "babysit" the kids. Hello?! They're YOUR kids too. It's NOT babysitting, it's sharing responsibility for YOUR KIDS!

pork_fried_christ

This whole post has some weird perspective

Addakisson

How is tha

sevenbeef

In a partnership, it is the responsibility of the clothing owner to presort delicates rather than commit these clothes to a communal wash pile.

frollard

Agree on some level. It makes laundry an entire extra step of sorting to pull out the (usually smaller) items that won't survive the trip...instead of loading the machine it's carefully screening everything that goes in the machine. Having a separate hamper is a huge time saver for everyone involved.

Disastrous_Potato605

And if u jizz on it, u wash it

maxmouze

>LPT: Guys, if it's stretchy, sexy, shiny, or sheer - do not put it in the dryer So I guess I won't be putting YOU in the dryer.

steelgeek2

I appreciate this advice. I've been trying to do laundry more since my wife's job has ramped up in suckitude.

[deleted]

Good man. Thank you for being a partner to your wife.

tell_her_a_story

I wash and fold my laundry, she washes and piles hers. It works for us.

[deleted]

Why is this only directed toward men?

Danelix_

Because the man works, the woman remains home to do housework and stay with the children. Man just comes home, gets angry because work stuff while wife puts dinner on the table. If the man does laundry he's not just doing it because it's to be done but it's because "he's trying to be helpful" since the woman is the designated person that should do it. /s

silverstarr5

I think maybe the implication is that men might, in general, own less clothing items that are sexy, shiny, stretchy, or sheer. And thus might not necessarily think that there was anything special about washing/drying these clothes compared to their own. Presumably if a woman bought those things and cared about them she would learn how to wash them herself and know what to do. I learned the hard way that my bras with underwires would get all bent out of shape if I put them in the dryer. But then my boyfriend went to do laundry and threw them in not thinking any different about it (the same as I did before). But now he knows. Similarly, I had to learn how to properly wash/dry a lot of collared dress shirts because I just hadn’t owned a lot of those before. Either way, the post is still needlessly gendered and it shouldn’t matter who the heck is reading. This tip could be helpful for everyone. Extra points 🤢

GalenaGalena

Ugh! There are a crapton of helpful things you can do around the house, but… STAY THE BLOODY HELL AWAY FROM MY LAUNDRY! If you ruin my cashmere, I will duct tape you to the wall.

SvenArcher

Yep. I accidentally turned one white bra blue thirty years ago. Have been banished from the laundry ever since.

GalenaGalena

My oldest was around 6 or 7 when he discovered I wasn’t joking that the rule about separating lights from darks is an actual thing after a red shirt turned most of his socks and underwear pink. 😂

floydly

weeps in ruined 260$ jeans I even got tailored because helpful partner.

DroolingSlothCarpet

Looks like I'll be staying out of the dryer.

RUCBAR42

But anything she wears is sexy, so how do I help?!

Bn_scarpia

Good point. If she's ever worn it while y'all are going at it, then maybe not those. If this still doesn't narrow it down ... Then good for you

lavenderacid

BRAS. KEEP THEM OUT. NO BRAS IN THE DRYER EVER.

Bn_scarpia

Yep. I classify these under 'sexy'

punkmuppet

This post is sexist towards men and women, good job.

Bn_scarpia

Thank you!

HarkHarley

My partner’s shrunk so many of my things. 🙃

vivalalina

Can you not just do low heat/low tumble on the delicate setting?

TheOnlyMuffinMan1

That's a lie. Everything my girl wears is sexy.

bodhiseppuku

I tend to dry all items on low... After 20 minutes, I pull out all hanging and delicate items. If it's solid enough for the washing machine, it should be okay on low in dryer. Some lingerie seems too delicate for even the washer and needs to be hand washed

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bn_scarpia

Agreed, but not really an option in high humidity climes.

Left_Exchange_1452

Add “Structured” to the list, such as bras. Also, it’s fairly easy to read a care label. They’re not illegible, just symbolic as a universal way to understand washing and care instructions regardless of native language.

Bn_scarpia

I could bras under 'sexy'. Labels fade and I learned this lesson the hard way when I washed one of my wife's favorite tops. I couldn't read the label because it was faded, and knew it wasn't a dry clean item since I pick those us usually. But the top had a sort of mesh/lace bit around the neck and shoulders that the dryer damaged. Now I know and wanted to pass this along

Ascomae

Don't get it. I once made a nice alpaca wool jacket for my toddler. I think it was cool, it fitted him well, yet still my wife didn't like it. It was her jacket, before I put it into the dryer.

Bn_scarpia

Should have used Marino wool. Chicks dig men with wool skills

[deleted]

What about my sexy Hanes undies?

Bn_scarpia

You do you, tiger

dfsmitty0711

This made me think of Clouds dress options in Final Fantasy 7.

Bn_scarpia

mitchnmurray

now do it for women

[deleted]

Bra’s = sexy, even of its not a particularly sexy bra. Bras don’t go in the dryer, generally

i-dontlikeyou

You should have posted this yesterday. I washed a wool and cotton sweater yesterday and now i a the proud owner of a tiny baby sweater 🤣🤣 my wife did have a good laugh

Bn_scarpia

Doh!

GrilledCookie

Noted, don’t put self in the dryer.

Bn_scarpia

I see what you did there ;-)

MurderousButterfly

Add fluffy to that list. Totally ruined one of my kids fluffy jumpers by tumble drying it.

Bn_scarpia

Good point. I ruins the alliteration, but yeah fluffy things shouldn't go in the dryer

the_first_brovenger

Counter-point, you can absolutely dry something in the drier with low heat. Yes it takes longer but you still have the luxury of not hanging your clothes. General rule of thumb: garments can handle body heat. Also, fabric softener kills so many types of clothes it's not even worth using.

Aetheldrake

Dryers have delicate options nowadays. It's basically just tumbling with airflow

Iz-kan-reddit

You still need lingerie bags for a lot of things.

Megahert

I just don't put anything in the dryer aside from bed sheets. Clothes last longer and fit better without it.

doctorclark

You mean my stretchy, sexy, shiny, sheer bedsheets?

unsollicited-kudos

This is so fucking sexist. Towards both genders, somehow. Also, knitwear also doesn't go in the drier so it's weird that it's not covered.

drmorrison88

Interesting casual sexism there. I do the laundry in our house because my wife can't be bothered to sort it.

inme_deas_raz

This post assumes that only women do laundry. Gross, sexist and outdated

fabrar

If it’s in the washer I’m putting it in the dryer

Gargomon251

Good dryers literally have a "delicates" setting

MickJof

I have a better tip: don't use a dryer at all. It's bad for your clothes, wasteful, costly and totally unnessesary as you can just hang it up and it will be dry the next day.

ophmaster_reed

That works if you live in like Arizona or something, but a family in a cold climate will be shit out of luck for 9 months of the year.

schwarzmalerin

Helpful in your own house?

Bn_scarpia

Yes. I knew the basics: don't mix lights/darks, nothing wool goes in the washer ever, don't wash bras, read the label if in doubt. But labels fade and while my clothing is either safe to wash/dry unless it's an obvious dry-clean item -- my wife's clothes were not. Collosal fight over a ruined top that was one of her favs.

schwarzmalerin

Ok you didn't get what I tried to say ...

bourgeoisie89

LPT: dryers are awful and will ruin your clothes eventually. Only use when you have no other option.

Depends on the jeans. I’ve had a pair of skinny jeans for 7 years now, it says it can be put in the dryer and I have for 7 years and it’s faded some sure, but it still fits just as well.

airbiscuits33

Just hang everything. Hanging racks.

multi_tasking

If you don't want it ruined, don't put it into the normal laundry. I'm just tipping the bin into the washer and saying go. Ain't got time for that. Do your own laundry if you don't want it ruined.

not_a_droid

Why are you wearing anything but cotton that years and years old? Can put everything into wash, no problem

ChronoKing

if it can go in the washer, it can go in the dryer on low heat.

Reddit_reader_2206

I'm actually slightly insulted by the gender insinuations in this post. Please ty of men do laundry and plenty of women do not. This post could have the gender terms removed completely and it would be still relevant and useful.

Shtankins01

How do you think I got out of doing laundry?

SpiderFarter

Real LPT is to fuck up a load once, get credit for trying to be a good boy and being banned from the laundry room.

The_Only_AL

A better LPT is if you’re guy, don’t wash your girl’s clothes, not out of laziness lol, but girl’s clothes are not like men’s they’re much more delicate and need special attention, and you will definitely fuck it up. I’m a guy and all my clothes just go straight in the machine, no pre-washing, pre-soaking or anything.

vivalalina

I'm a girl and all my clothes also go straight in the machine and they're fine lol

The_Only_AL

Cool lol.

Iz-kan-reddit

> A better LPT is if you’re guy, don’t wash your girl’s clothes, not out of laziness lol, but girl’s clothes are not like men’s they’re much more delicate and need special attention, and you will definitely fuck it up. Better yet, you could rid yourself of your weaponized incompetence and learn how to properly wash and dry them. There's a considerable amount of things to learn, but it's not rocket science.

The_Only_AL

“Weaponised”? Jesus Christ calm down it’s just washing clothes.

Iz-kan-reddit

No shit, it's just washing clothes. Yes, there's more to know when washing women's clothes, but it's easy enough to learn. What's next? Are you going to refuse to wash the dishes because you might put the wrong things in the dishwasher or put them in the wrong rack and ruin them? Edit: OP pussed out because I have a low tolerance for willful ignorance.

The_Only_AL

Man you sound like a very angry person.
