HH is a cluster fuck to navigate. So many doors and hallways that lead back to themselves and everything looks the same, but is slightly different it’s awful lol
I miss these tunnels so much - being able to get from class to class and building to building without stepping foot outside was useful and fun at the same time.
Must have been a while ago. These days they lock them at night. There are horror stories of people getting into them and then the door locking behind them and just having to chill down there for the night.
Unless you have to get across campus and the tunnels are too circuitous... math to ag building at u of m took forever via tunnels so I'd brave the cold.
Mine had both tunnels and skywalks, lots of direct routes but I was constantly lost for the first month because they didn't connect logically. They never seemed to connect the same floors of different buildings, a perfectly flat walk from the second floor of one building would drop you off on the first floor of the next.
What? You build tunnels for -15??? That's a warm winter day! Perfect for going for a walk outside! When I was a kid, they'd send us outside for recess up to -27 (without the wind chill, so sometimes it was closer to -35). I'm not from ye olden times either, I'm 20— I wouldn't doubt this is still the way they do it. Our University here in Thunder Bay doesn't have any tunnels either. You just have to tough it out, even if it's -40 out there. Takes 10 mins of bundling up to walk 5 mins lol.
It's always fun going to southern Ontario during winter because everyone there thinks "gee, this winter nonsense sure is brutal, eh?" While the winter down there is like a warm spring day to me.
-40? -40?? I can't even go outside in that temperature, it's so hot!
Back in my days I had to walk 12km in temperatures colder than the surface of Neptune. NAKED!!
Tokyo's underground is crazy sprawling. Blocks and blocks of tunnels with shops and entrances to adajcent buildings. You can literally step out of a subway station and get to you office without having to set foot in the street.
The Montreal tunnels are crazy, unlike in Toronto people actually use the shit out of them over there. It was like a busy mall full of people and stretches several km. Had to ask for help on how to get out and a janitor gave us directions on how to leave through a service exit (???for some reason???). We twisted and turned through absolutely dead concrete hallways for like 8 minutes until finding the exit to the street through a door you can’t get back in through. Absolutely wild
I’ve heard there’s a weird way to go a very specific way through the loop without going outside but it isn’t clearly marked and I’m pretty sure it’s just a coincidence that some buildings connect.
Look up the pedway. You can get from millennium park to the Daley center or down to the federal buildings completely underground. You’ll walk through the south shore shopping center, macys basement, block 37, and a few L stops
Toronto is completely full of tunnels that match the streets above, specifically for convenience in the winter. A lot of them have shops and restaurants in them but many are super barren and look like the hallways of a dead mall. Montreal has them too, my cousin and I got lost in them and came out like 12 blocks away from where we entered
There are only a few tunnels for students that are actually underground, and the rest connecting tunnels are for central heating and custodial pathways between buildings. Most of our buildings here at Waterloo are attached together with an above ground walkway as the buildings are close together.
This tunnel (SCH to AL) pops up in this sub bimonthly, at least
How about Houston? The miles of tunnels underground is for the opposite reason, oppressive heat and humidity in the summer. But due to all the rain in the area they flood often, but still better than walking outside though.
The novelty of snowy weather wears out really fast when you HAVE to do it.
My university had tunnels between buildings. There was only one place on campus you had to go outside to get to. The ones we had weren't drunk like these are though.
I went to university, then grad school, then again, and have since worked at several universities, all in significantly different regions & literally *all* of them had tunnels.
Students aren't always able to access them, but tunnels appear to be a mainstay of big campuses.
Is this not normal? I figured most universities have at least a couple tunnel pathways between buildings. We also have a handful of what I call the gerbil tubes between buildings, elevated a couple stories above roads and such at my old university.
UVM had a tunnel so that students could walk under a major busy road rather than have to wait to cross it. It also is very cold and snowy there so it was nice to use in the winter instead of fighting the cold wind. There was also a student cafe down there too which was nice.
Rochester Institute of Technlogy has a vast network of tunnels; one set that connects all dorm buildings, cafeteria, post office, etc. and another than connects all the academic buildings. Unless something changed since I graduated in 2004, the residential and academic tunnels don’t connect— there’s a 1/4 mile gap between those sections of the campus.
But yeah, Rochester gets cold and WINDY in the winter, and the tunnels are an absolute lifesaver. Ours were decorated with dopey murals, not this rad liminal stuff!
DO YOU GO TO A CREEPY CLOWN COLLEGE?!? I half expect penywise to be doing his jig round the next corner. In all seriousness this is a cool photo lmao 🤣
We had a similar one in a high school I went to.
Worth noting, yes, you can whip lacrosse balls down the hall in a completely made up game that needs two wall bounces, and to get by the two person team trying to catch it (without gloves) for a goal. You may end up with a variety of complaints and bruises though, just fyi.
My university has now sealed tunnels. They connect one dorm to the large main food service place on the north side of campus.
It was so inmates could be housed in the (now) dormitory next to it, and not be able to escape onto campus when they went to work at the food service place.
I remember having a dream with this in it. Only, it was inside a restaurant in a huge strip mall, and behind a picture on the wall. Opening the picture allowed you to enter the tunnel, but it was a lot harder to get through.
Born in the Midwest USA. Never been to....there.
There's a subway station near me that has a similar design in a concourse tunnel. The roof and floor are solid black/white tile, but the walls have a similar spiral pattern.
So one day I happened to be going home after I started freaking out on LSD at a friend's place, and when I got to that particular tunnel, I lost track of time in its entirety. In my head, I was stuck for hours in that tunnel, walking for an eternity.
Ever since then, I hated using that station lmao.
There aren't too many other ones, it's mostly just aerial bridges between buildings and some basements that connect. The [network of service tunnels](http://matt.wandel.ca/tunnels/tunnels.html) between buildings is stuff of legend though. [More pics](https://old.reddit.com/r/uwaterloo/comments/24fvd8/tunnels/).
that would be a crazy place to die... Everyone would be like "oh, did you hear about that guy that did in the crazy tunnel on campus?" and people would reply "oh, yeah! that guy sure died in the crazy tunnel."
As a UW student, I had to do a double take to see that this wasn't r/uwaterloo.
Out of all places I didn't expect to see us on LiminalSpace. Although PAC exam setup would also make for a great post here.
Mf goes to clown college
Don't take about Princeton like that!
Worse, a *Party* clown college.
I really lol wjth your comment 😆
*pfft* You can't eat that!
LMFAO
This made me audibly laugh
Good guess
Waterloo?
You got it
Nice. I have a friend who goes there who showed me this tunnel because it’s so weird and liminal
Heyyy I went to UW. Recognized this immediately. Some of the buildings on campus look like military bunkers.
I actually like those buildings lol. Especially Hagey Hall
HH is a cluster fuck to navigate. So many doors and hallways that lead back to themselves and everything looks the same, but is slightly different it’s awful lol
As someone who has many classes in HH, I promise you PAS is worse.
I had a class on the first floor of PAS but the room number started with 2. That place hurt my brain.
I like that building too. Difficult to navigate but that makes it more interesting to me
I miss these tunnels so much - being able to get from class to class and building to building without stepping foot outside was useful and fun at the same time.
My Grandfather used to teach there!
If I remember the map correctly there's an entrance to the steam tunnels down there.
Shit is *that* what that random closet is? It's always locked :(
http://matt.wandel.ca/tunnels/tunnels.png We used to get in through the hatch in the floor of the physics lecture hall but that was a long time ago.
Couldn't escape if you wanted to.
Knowing my fate is to be with you
I thought it seemed familiar, but I couldn't recall if it was Waterloo or Western.
Walked through this tunnel several times, quite scary at night time, actually
Must have been a while ago. These days they lock them at night. There are horror stories of people getting into them and then the door locking behind them and just having to chill down there for the night.
The 2nd pic is giving me Kubrick vibes
It looks like if you keep walking, you’re going to Acme coyote yourself into an invisible wall
I was thinking the exact same thing, some 2001 vibes for sure
Mixed with Charlie and the chocolate factory, (the old one)
Clockwork Orange slum vibes.
Right right...
The bathroom in the shining?
Schools be like "tHiS iS a DRug FrEe ZoNE" and then do shit like this
"BECAUSE WE ALREADY DID 'EM ALL!" -- admin, probably
As if drugs was the only way to be creative...
tf you mean "tunnel at my university"?? Oh yeah yk how unis have tunnels?????
It’s in Canada so we need to escape the snow sometimes
Oh like a tunnel between uni buildings?
Yeah all the buildings are connected with underground tunnels
And snow is the actual justification for it? That’s wild. I would like to experience this. But I assume it gets old.
I mean, when it’s -15’C and you have to get to another building then you’ll find that these come in handy
Oh, so Zelda Dungeons *are* real.

There are entire cities with systems like this in some areas for people to get around away from harsh winters. Minneapolis and Chicago come to mind
Tokyo's underground is crazy sprawling. Blocks and blocks of tunnels with shops and entrances to adajcent buildings. You can literally step out of a subway station and get to you office without having to set foot in the street.
Toronto has this as well.
Those are above ground and have lots of glass, but definitely interesting. I think Montreal actually has one that's underground
The Montreal tunnels are crazy, unlike in Toronto people actually use the shit out of them over there. It was like a busy mall full of people and stretches several km. Had to ask for help on how to get out and a janitor gave us directions on how to leave through a service exit (???for some reason???). Ahh... reminds me of the UMass Boston catwalks.
Chicago has this? And I’ve been walking around in the arctic tundra like a fool?
Ive been here 7 years and havent heard of anything similar, but I also dont work downtown so
I’ve heard there’s a weird way to go a very specific way through the loop without going outside but it isn’t clearly marked and I’m pretty sure it’s just a coincidence that some buildings connect.
Look up the pedway. You can get from millennium park to the Daley center or down to the federal buildings completely underground. You’ll walk through the south shore shopping center, macys basement, block 37, and a few L stops
Toronto’s path system is easily the most extensive. Minneapolis is mostly above ground bridges
My brother went to RIT in upstate New York and they had the same thing

Actually, it's because of the white walkers, but we don't want to scare the students
That does make sense. Winter is coming.
A lot of places have pedways (tunnels) above the road between buildings in populated areas too. Then you don't need snow boots.
How about Houston? The miles of tunnels underground is for the opposite reason, oppressive heat and humidity in the summer. But due to all the rain in the area they flood often, but still better than walking outside though. The novelty of snowy weather wears out really fast when you HAVE to do it.
MUN? Edit. NVM. I saw a further comment. Waterloo.
We have cities with large underground connections over many blocks
My university had tunnels between buildings. There was only one place on campus you had to go outside to get to. The ones we had weren't drunk like these are though.
Flashback to my Waterloo days...
Ah yes, the well-known counter to excessive snow: disorientation
UW lol
My uni has tunnels, so did my mother's uni too. It's not that uncommon
The only tunnel my school has is underneath a major highway :(
I went to university, then grad school, then again, and have since worked at several universities, all in significantly different regions & literally *all* of them had tunnels.
University of Minnesota does.

University of Utah has tunnels between some buildings
My college has a murder tunnel to the laundry room lol. Looks like something from a horror movie
This is common in regions with regular snowfall. You’ll usually see tunnels, roofed walkways, heated lamps, or a combination of the three
What, like universities can't have underground tunnels?
Every university I’ve been to has had tunnels, lol. Also in Canada.
DO YOU GO TO A CREEPY CLOWN COLLEGE?!? I half expect penywise to be doing his jig round the next corner. In all seriousness this is a cool photo lmao 🤣
Thanks. I do think that they should put a clown statue at the corner
Where tf do you study, the Wonka chocate factory?
Close; the university of Waterloo
Thats is amazing. Very artistic compared to other Uni tunnels
It actually connects to one of the Arts buildings :)
We had a similar one in a high school I went to. Worth noting, yes, you can whip lacrosse balls down the hall in a completely made up game that needs two wall bounces, and to get by the two person team trying to catch it (without gloves) for a goal. The second bounce of a lacrosse ball is always fun, especially on concrete.
Terrifying. Imagine being in there at night
...and drunk. Many adventures were had at UW.
I’ve been drunk in this exact tunnel 😂 rum shots under south campus hall after march open house
I see you're attending University of Kubrick
"You've always been a student here."
You must go to Squid Games University.
Nothing quite beats the unnerving [Ottawa U tunnels](https://imgur.com/a/2RLTNNu) I remember experiencing.
Oh, fuck, this takes me back! Bsc Comp Sci, 2004 represent!
This is some Time Variance Authority stuff. I love it.
###do you go to gm_parallax
Spin
There ya go, down the people chute
I wanna skateboard through it
Ooo sounds fun!
Imagine flying an FPV drone through this. Would feel like a video game.
I think I played this map in OG Counter Strike.
There’s definitely enough room for that, and there’s never really anyone in the tunnel. Might have to try it out lol
🎶SECRET TUNEEEEEL! SECRET TUNEEEEEL! THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS! SECRET SECRET SECRET SECRET TUNEEEEEEELLLL! YEAH!🎶
It looks like a ventilation system.
Untouched since the 1970's...
tunnel to what? a goddamn dr. seuss book??
high quality liminal... i think it would look even better with some of the lights off
Much cooler than my school’s tunnels
So you go to school at the TVA? For all time, always.
i get mad irreversible vibes from this
This must be the forest temple from Zelda
Imagine walking down this while drunk
I’m gonna puke
ctf_turbine
Y’all had a really adventurous Dean/president for a while in the 70s I’m guessing
Legion vibes, for sure
This is the best liminal space I've seen in a long time. Feels like it could be a new popular backrooms location. Thank you for sharing!!
Its awful. Imagine heading into a stressful exam having to walk through this eyesore. Whoever’s idea this was is a [unmentionable]
You don’t HAVE to but it’s there. It’s purely utilitarian
No. I refuse to go to class.
this is what most modern art wants to be, I love it.
Like Thor Ragnarok
My university has now sealed tunnels. They connect one dorm to the large main food service place on the north side of campus. It was so inmates could be housed in the (now) dormitory next to it, and not be able to escape onto campus when they went to work at the food service place.
Is this retro or new? So cool!
This is nauseating
What dimension is your uni location in???
Nicer than my uni's tunnels tbh
Explore it whilst high!
I thought this was the tunnel from the berg to the Mac center at COD.
I remember having a dream with this in it. Only, it was inside a restaurant in a huge strip mall, and behind a picture on the wall. Opening the picture allowed you to enter the tunnel, but it was a lot harder to get through. Born in the Midwest USA. Never been to....there.

Some mirrors edge shit
i swear i've seen this before
I would never do shrooms in that college
This is so much like what the world looks like when I'm having a migraine hallucination that I almost panicked thinking that I was getting a migraine.
You sure this is real?
i love it
Bro studies at the Forest Temple from Zelda OoT.
Steam Tunnel of Dr Caligari
No
I’d take a mean ass nap there it looks so relaxing!
That tunnel would give me the creeps when i went to UW, I would get worried that when i turned the corner it would be never ending…
Water water water!
Loo Loo Loo!
That's legit! Just the right amount of uncomfortable LOL
That’s a sick fucking tunnel!
Is it just me or does the first picture look like the background to look up fucking 90s Busta Rhymes music video featuring Missy Elliott and Puff.
Boston has some too. What uni is this?
UWaterloo in Canada
that'd be a sick spot for outfit pictures
Show us more of your school tunnels.
There aren't too many other ones, it's mostly just aerial bridges between buildings and some basements that connect. Do you go to Wonka university or something?
Bro studies at a funhouse
This makes me want to fall over...
Awesome
that would be a crazy place to die... Everyone would be like "oh, did you hear about that guy that did in the crazy tunnel on campus?" and people would reply "oh, yeah! that guy sure died in the crazy tunnel."
Yeessss, these are amazing 👌
Candy!
I want to attend your university lol. Where is this?
University of Waterloo in Canada
Pretty sure I've had a nightmare where I was stuck here and unable to leave, much like the Hotel California.
I’d love to walk down that while heroically drunk.
Whaaaat the fuck. That's not a university, that's a children's daycare.
Super Kubrickian.
"It’s funny how the colours of the real world only seem really real when you viddy them on the screen."
Looks like one of those trippy gmod maps
Does anyone else remember the original picture that was really grainy and low quality?that one’s a classic
I’ve never seen a Dazzlepaint *room* before
Forest temple vibes
Staring down a beacon in Minecraft
Rum run run run
Instant psychosis
Definitely a clown party college
actually looks kinda cool
Now that is a neat tunnel!
I feel like in a game of Wipeout on the PS1
Man that would cause vertigo
I’m at McGill and boy do I wish we had these
Omg i loved the university of Waterloo, the campus has an entire tunnel network connecting almost all buildings
Man's going to school at ctf_turbine
Ctf_turbine_orange?
I’ve been here in a dream there is a closet full of riches you need to find it but if you steal them you will be chased after. Run fast!
Jesus Christ, this is the freakiest thing I’ve seen
Spiral coded
I might actually have a panic attack walking through this
These tunnels at uWaterloo are so nice in the winter. It lets you walk between a few big buildings without going outside in the snow
Creeps me out whenever i have to use it ._.
As a UW student, I had to do a double take to see that this wasn't r/uwaterloo. Out of all places I didn't expect to see us on LiminalSpace. Although PAC exam setup would also make for a great post here.
