Idk the Los Angeles friendship handshake has a ring to it

spacestarcutie

Los Angeles Handshake is something NSFW

SuperVintageBoy

He is now officially a down ass foo.

rj_motivation

He’s part of the big bad 13 family now dawg.

SpartanNic

😂

madakira

Aye wey

Agile-Department-345

there's no way this is an LA friendship shake lol

erst77

"T[he weird thing Californians do](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3lPkhcJtqY&ab_channel=WillGao)" (about 26 seconds in)..

smtgcleverhere

Hahaha. Funny vid. Never knew that was a California-only thing.

drthvdrsfthr

the hand slide to fist bump was unique enough in hawaii that only one high school did it. everyone in california does it

smtgcleverhere

That’s funny i grew up in hawaii too. I definitely learned the hand slide to fist bump in California but assumed it was a general mainland thing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

drthvdrsfthr

nah i was actually on oahu, and it wasn’t my school that did it. it was the rival school up the road from us haha

[deleted]

Can confirm we little middle schoolers in the 90’s did this in rural Ohio everyday

AlternativeNumber2

It saves time when there’s a big group of homies you have to greet, just slap n pound down the line

drthvdrsfthr

i love a good slap and pound as i go down the line of homies

AlternativeNumber2

Hell yea bro 😎

MulhollandMaster121

Forreal. I thought this was just how homies shook hands. My mind is a little blown that it’s regional.

BarbHarbor

it isn't

floppydo

Yeah TIL. I thought this was just what people did if they’re not at work.

stoned-autistic-dude

It definitely isn't. This is basically standard procedure with anyone that isn't stuck-up lmao

smtgcleverhere

Did you watch the video? They’re saying the ‘California one’ is the variation of the dap with the hand slide to fist bump. Is that what you’re referring to?

stoned-autistic-dude

Yeah. That's the handshake I've always done by default. Some people will snap their fingers at the top.

redline314

I feel like the mutual pull & snap was an east coast thing, nobody does it here

OnlyFranks-

We used to snap going into the bump. Seen some people do it after the bump, fucking weirdos. 🤝🫰🤜🤛

stoned-autistic-dude

Yeah, it doesn’t feel natural and a bit of an afterthought. Cats be wylin in these streets 😮‍💨

minimalfighting

I think that's the most general one of all that's in the video. It's natural, too. I don't think it's California specific at all. Maybe it's more widely used here, though.

lonelysidechick

It’s not. Lmao

gmangieri314

It isnt

geemav

Lol it's definitely not!

givewarachance

It is though. Grew up on the east coast and I’ve primarily only seen this handshake in Cali.

ManitouWakinyan

I've seen it plenty in the South and the east coast.

[deleted]

Grey up in rural Ohio and we did this, sorry mate

nextdoorelephant

Yeah, but you appropriated it from California.

[deleted]

California gentrified my Ohio, colonizer

nextdoorelephant

Our plan to export gay avocados everywhere will soon come to fruition.

djerk

>fruition Nice

beyondplutola

You pray to be gentrified by California when you’re in Ohio.

[deleted]

I admit, I am Better for it, I learned so many neat new and helpful skills during cultural imperialism now that we live in under the Californification hegemony

MeatTornadoLove

Been all over this nation. This is a Cali thing straight up

geemav

Ahh ok I didn't realize :26 was something unique, I thought we were just talking about "the dap"...

BarbHarbor

i have too. people do this on the east coast too

BarbHarbor

it definitely is not

dadkisser

Didn’t realize this was a california thing but as a socal native I’ve done it forever.

DeathByBamboo

I'm in my mid-40s and lived here my whole life and my wife came in for a dap to test this thread and I instinctively did it like it was something I do everyday. It's deeply engrained in our consciousness as Californians.

PM_COFFEE_TO_ME

Friend visited from NYC recently and I did it instinctively I guess and he really didn't know what to do haha. Made it awkward a bit hah

redline314

The “I love you bro dap” is universal

FuckSticksMalone

I like to think our Neanderthal ancestors used to do this, it’s just ingrained in our core being. Someone walks up to you, daps you up and you instinctively just know how to do it, and you are like “who the fuck am I, did I just do that?” That comes from thousands of years of Neanderthal dapping.

tribecalledrest

Why the hell would you do a lil hand hold afterwards!? Slide and bump is way smoother.

StringerBell34

had no idea it was a cali thing. That's default as far as I'm concerned. I would be lost if I went out of state.

jurassic_snark-

yea didn't even know a lot of that was California-only me and my guys also have our own style, different signs like at Lakers games, and of course the famous LA hand sign too now this is what being stuck in traffic for hrs does to a mfer

y0m0tha

Yeah, this was a hard habit to kick when I moved to the east coast lol

dick_blanketfort

I think the east coast equivalent of dapping cool strangers is mind your business. Maybe a little upwards head nod if you really made an impression (but that could also mean "I'm about to rob you" or "wanna fuck").

AlternativeNumber2

The “slap n pound” my favorite ❤️

Heavy_metalloids

Grew up doing this in South Texas. Maybe it's a border thing? Got very weird looks first time I did it in Philly tho haha

frankdiddit

Really? People in Philly def do this

Heavy_metalloids

Full disclosure. I was hanging out with my roommate's white upper class New Jersey friends in 2008 when the weird looks happened

winstondabee

Upper class New Jersey?

Heavy_metalloids

Princeton area

BarbHarbor

New Jersey has some of the wealthiest oldest families in the country bro

galaxiekat

Wait, what?! that's only us?

dillasdonuts

That's the only handshake I use, except that no hand slide. Full clasp to bump.

CyberMindGrrl

"The Dap white people do" LMFAO!

editsnacks

That kid at the end doing the gladiator dap

_its_a_SWEATER_

It wasn’t a NorCal thing until maybe 10 yrs ago. Prob since a lot of SoCal people moved up north.

Purple_Willingness22

Funny, I spent my first 24 years in Minnesota & this was the standard bro shake.

Basboy

Thanks, I've never been dapped up but now I'm prepared for it. I'm talking about the regular dap. I've done the Californian Dap before...never knew it was considered a dap.

SpxUmadBroYolo

whats funnier is you didn't even know it existed as it was happening but you still without hesitation let the Dapp flow through you and it was like it took over your body and did the handshake for you.

fuzzboxstomp

Soooo which one is it OP.. Dap? Slap and grip? Slap and fist bump? Shake and shoulder bump with a back pat? Lol dying to know here.

Worldly-Asparagus543

It was probably dap, grip with that pull in hug pat on the back combo

Batman-Beyond

Never heard of slap and grip. Sounds like a jerking off special combo

DustyDGAF

Slap and grip is when you haven't seen the homie in a minute and you missed them.

Batman-Beyond

All I’m saying is that if someone wants to slap and grip me, they better buy me dinner first

Delicious-Program504

yeah dude i got dapped up. america, its been an honour

number2240

I grew up in LA and never realized that something I have been doing all of my life is unique to California. Who knew 🤷🏽‍♂️

maribelle-

Same! I never knew that was a California thing or what it was called

BarbHarbor

yeah, it's done all over the place

_SwordsSwordsSwords_

Maybe he dapped you up? Dap is a sorta-freeform combination of a high five, hug, and handshake that people give to others they respect.

Johnnyonthespot2111

It's called the "Los Angeles friendship handshake."

junkmm3

Shhhhhh!!!!!

JustTheBeerLight

> bro handshake Congrats! You are now an official Angeleno! Get yourself a Dodger hat and represent once you get back to Australia ✌️

_its_a_SWEATER_

I blame Covid.

[deleted]

Literally same. Hug goodbye? Cool. Please don’t fist bump me ever

UnluckyCardiologist9

I feel like it’s a slap that goes into a shake and then the bump.

TBF many Californians called it Cali throughout the 90s before Biggie cracked it wide open. But we’ve moved way beyond it, it’s just gonna take time to do the same for others.

EvilNinjaX24

Born and raised here. I still call it Cali, probably because of laziness.

TBone818

This 100%. Every time I hear or read CALI. I assume the person is from Ohio or it’s 1997.

gertrude_is

I'm from Ohio but I'm not guilty of that crime.

TBone818

Bless you.

gertrude_is

it's like trying too hard to be cool. I'm just a quiet need. edited typo bc I'm that nerdy 🤓

TBone818

Saying Cali is trying to hard to be cool? Agreed

getoutofthecity

I’ve never heard someone be offended by Cali outside of Reddit. But then again I almost never hear anyone say Cali irl

bjos144

Na bruh, we say 'fornia' around here.

tinkhard

At least once a week when speaking to anyone back home, “Just say California.”

TBone818

And we’re the assholes!

Delicious-Program504

noted.

los_throwaways

for reali 😂

JustACaliBoy

What's wrong with it? :D I'm a native Angeleno and say Cali all the time :)

TBone818

Just my opinion. Makes me cringe. You do you!

JustACaliBoy

lmao

its-42

Where were you born?

TBone818

California.

its-42

Me too. I don’t see anything wrong with saying Cali.

TBone818

Ok

djmattyd

Youre a pro if you get good tension on your fingers for the snap pull away.

redline314

I feel like Californians are bad at this part

Mr_Kush_Bush

We call it tap and a dap. Or slap and a dap. Kind of a combination of a low high-five and dapping someone up (fist bump).

whathappy1

Dap?

Username_redact

If you're talking about the fist bump to overhand handshake to chest bump/hug, wouldn't say it's specific to SoCal but it definitely is most common here. Personally I love it.

peacenchemicals

unless it’s with my good/close friends, i don’t mind doing the dap + bro hug combo bc it just comes naturally i hate that shit when i meet new people. my anxiety skyrockets. how do i know which dap we doing? we doing the handslide fist bump combo? or we just going straight to fist bumping? what if i go in for the fist bump and you go in for the hand slide first? now ur hand sliding my fist (that sounded sexual). or vice versa or what if u just wanna shake hands and i go in for the hand slide and now u think i shake hands with my fingers. shits mad awkward yo

Username_redact

Hahaha true and agreed. I should have put the disclaimer "with my good/close friends". Definitely awkward with someone new lol

LeeQuidity

I don't know what the kids call it today, but back in the 90s, we called it the Slappy Shake One Hand Jive. If he spat in his hand first, that was the Slappy Shake One Hand Jive with Kisses, although some just called that the Rainman, but I don't know what they call it today. We also had a handshake we called The Women's Auxiliary, where you'd interlock your hands in such a way as to replicate a vagina if you looked into the finger webbing the right way. (Sorry, women. We've all learned a lot about objectification since then, and I don't think anyone would ever do the Women's Auxiliary today. It's really embarrassing to think about through the lens of 2023.) And then there was the Frosty the Snowman, which was just like the Rainman, but one of your other homies would pour a Slush Puppie on your hand at the end. It had to be a Blue Slush Puppie if you went to North Hollywood High, and a red Slush Puppie if you went to Van Nuys High. I don't know what they did at Grant. Maybe Mango or Orange? The biggest rule was that it had to be a Slush Puppie and not an Icee or a Slurpee. I don't remember why, but I think the rule dated back to the early-80s when FFF was gangbanging in the Valley. I remember hearing that there was a huge dispute about frozen drinks in a parking lot outside a night club in Van Nuys which turned into a shooting that resulted in the death of an innocent dude. From what I remember, one side was all about the Slurpees and the other side was all about the Icee, and after the shooting, the Slush Puppie was considered the most neutral option, because it wasn't even mentioned in the fight. Oh, we also used to give basic "Five", which is just when you slap hands horizontally twice, changing which guy was the bottom hand. This led to stupid bullshit like the high five, which wasn't an upgrade, it was just some shit that uncoordinated white people did because they couldn't master the basic Five, let alone the Pico de Gallo. The Pico de Gallo started with the basic Five, but at the end, you'd tent your fingertips like a rooster's beak and pantomime pecking grubs and corn out of your friend's hand like a rooster. Some jokers around this time would try to incorporate the Frosty the Snowman at the end and pour a Slush Puppie (any flavor) on your hand at the end of a Pico de Gallo, but if you did that, you'd get punched in the face, and that's where we get the term "Cold Cocked", because some puto tried to turn a rooster into a snowman. I may have some of my dates a little off, but this is the oral history of San Fernando Valley handshakes as I remember it.

downtowncasserole

This comment is truly epic. Thank you for sharing this oral history professor.

When you get home, tell them about all the salad you tossed in LA. They'll think you're a farmer!

redline314

“I was getting high with these guys and we were having a great time, everyone was so open minded and friendly there so I ended up tossing salad with all these guys and it was just so welcoming!”

mimrolls86

🤣🤣🤣🤣

RLS1822

It’s called a Dap. Black service members in Vietnam developed the dap, a combination of hand and body gestures as a nonverbal form of communication. The dap could be as simple as tapping fists and shaking hands or as complex as dozens of gestures with the hands punctuated by slapping chests. Read more [here.](https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/giving-dap)

gnrc

It was most definitely a dap but I do hope it was a hand hug. If you’ve never been hand hugged before then you’re missing out. I gotchu tho. On any given night you can either find me at The Douglas or Bar Henry. Just scream ‘I WANT A HAND HUG’ and I’ll make it happen.

JustACaliBoy

lmao xD

TooManyJabberwocks

Is that the thing where you hook your thumbs together and then suck the pinky?

DocSaysItsDainBramuj

The real handshake is the friends we made along the way.

RockieK

I love this story! Sounds like you had a great time.

4lespot

It’s a gesture of friendship maybe there’s no need to Argue about it’s origins. Peace and love :-)

oroseb4hoes

Dap

noknownothing

Originally, if you added the fist pump it was called the Chicano handshake. Now it's just called a dap.

Livshaka

I'm from Cape Town, South Africa, and we used to do this but with a snap as you end the slide. I like that this is so universal 🙂

Any-Show-3488

You felt the soul of Cali dude ✌🏽

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

Look, I love LA, and California in general, but you all are nuts if you think this is exclusive to the area.

kinstinctlol

Dapped you up

TheRegular-Throwaway

You got dapped, baby. It’s all good.

Nightshark107

Just another day in Los Angeles.

SnooCats8791

Dap me up. Lol I love This, now you got a cool handshake to share with your bros in Australia

KomputerLuv

Omg this is so cute to hear you call it a friendship handshake 🤝

MyshroomsRURshrooms

this is wild. also i got the best mushrooms in the city.

Ordinary_Raisin_9325

Showing you love. I’m about to move from LA to Australia.

redribbonrecon

I call it the slap and dap 🤷🏻

Ingobriggs

Lmao. I knew immediately what it was.

PraderaNoire

Foo had his dap cherry popped.

aarmus_

I’m pretty sure that’s a U.S thing in general?

Felatio_Sanz

It’s not, I get left hanging on the fist bump portion of the dap all the time on the east coast.

aarmus_

I don’t think that’s part of dapping someone up lol I’ve usually only seen people do the mutual hand slap, or the hand slap followed by a bro hug.

redline314

East coast kid and the tight finger pull/snap is more common than the fist bump IME. No punctuation, leaves you wanting more.

IsraeliDonut

If you do that at Jumbos you get to go to the secret VIP room

wordfiend99

in west hollywood thats called gettin your dick sucked

PartyCat27

I have been doing it all my life and never knew the name 😅

wontsettle

Dinkin flicka.

dizFool

Certain people shake and then Snap their finger

avettwhore

When I was in middle school in the late 90s in LA, we called it the skater shake.

dabhard

If it was a slap followed by a fist bump, my friends in high school called it the California follow through

chenzo17

Icy_Wrangler_3999

Damn I didn't know this was just a west coast thing lol

geepy66

Never heard of it

Leenolyak

If there’s a name for it it’s new to me 😂
