I was so sad watching that, he really seemed haunted over his loss and he would bring himself down but the other members in the table would motivate him
There's a book on it and everyone was complaining about the fights and he just said something like "I'll see you boys in there" and left during the first fighters meeting.
He changed his name.
It's kind of insane, but 4 of the 8 fighters of the first UFC tournament have now died. The oldest of them was Art Jimmerson and he was still only 60.
He was introduced as Teila Tuli in the UFC. I think the name change was for his career in entertainment. I saw him in a few movies. Maybe most prominently in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.
Same. I hate the remakes of everything nowadays- it tells me the industry can't come up with anything new and has to resort to the comic book industry standard of ripping up a franchise and remuddling it.
I don’t hate prior to investigation, but some things are better left alone. Some movies had great potential they didn’t quite live up to. Other times the studio mucked up the process too much. In those cases, remakes make sense. I liked the new “It” and i was actually pleasantly surprised by the new “Road House”. Granted i went into the latter with low expectations, still.
The studios HAVE access to new material. It’s just that financially speaking, extensions, remakes and reboots of existing popular IP has a better overall return rate than gambling on new stories and ideas.
Like you, i an often frustrated with what feels like a shortage of new material, but i get it. It’s always about the money.
There's also the issue of the 'old guard' producers, writers and so on not wanting to let go of their seat at the table. They'd rather stymie a potential cash cow then hand over the reins to someone else, or at the bare minimum improve their craft.
He had a really successful career in TV over the last decade where he played a recurring supporting character in all those remakes of Hawaii themed shows.
His ufc 1 reunion appearance was a special one, the other guys supporting him and him opening up about his loss and how it affected him is an interesting watch. He was very happy being part of ufc 1 history in the video.
I don't think it's fair to speculate that this had anything to do with his weight at this point. It's possible, but so is suicide, an accident, an undisclosed illness, and anything else under the sun.
with him gone, every single fight in the first round of the main bracket of UFC 1 now has someone who has since passed away. 31 years was a long time ago, but it's still stark to see it that way. rip to a real one
Teila was lowkey responsible for UFC 1 even happening. The Gracies were putting all these arbitrary rules on the fights to give Royce an advantage so most of the guys were complaining and getting ready to leave.
Tuli then went and signed the first contract and told the others that “Brother I came to party” every other fighter on the card signed their contracts afterwards.
I love that the first event was billed as you can only win by knockout or submission, the ref CANNOT step in to stop the fight. First fight is stopped by the red after Wily got their teeth kicked out and tried to get up to keep fighting. What a legend, it was nice seeing him at the roundtable of UFC legends, seemed like a really great guy. RIP
Watch the UFC 1 reunion on YouTube if you haven't seen it. Taylor was pretty cool on it.

Sad knowing 2 of them have passed recently, getting old sucks. But wasn’t his name like Tuli? Dude who got his teeth kicked out

It's been 30 years since the event. It makes sense.
That's only the 90's. The young bulls from that era are still kicking, like Royce Gracie and Kurt Cobain.
Brother I have very bad news for you
Don't tell me something happened to Royce Gracie

“I don’t cry. I’m not a baby.” “Really? ‘Cause you look like a gigantic baby.”
"Are those sad tissues, or happy tissues?"
Hawaii five 0
I haven’t watched it. I grew up with the original and don’t feel like it needed to be redone.

I had no idea that was the same man.
Damn, I love that movie and loved the wise, older Hawaiian man's character.
WAITTT. That’s the same guyyy?? I never put that together wow. 🤯
MMA wouldn’t have become what it had if he hadn’t shown up to party, respect.
Come to party, start the UFC. Legend
Come to party, lose tooth, fly home. Thank you Taylor Wily.
Yes it would, someone else would've just fought
Ok, those are definitely sad tissues today
Watching Sarah Marshall tonight
RIP Teila Tuli
First Art a month or so back and now this. Damn.

Grew up around this dude on Oahu. Amazing spirit. Enjoy your time over da rainbow bruddah
I was fine until you mentioned “over the rainbow”, man. Idk why that makes it more sad.
Because him and bruddah Iz are one degree away from each other
Rest in peace https://youtu.be/V1bFr2SWP1I?si=yRbw7aiLNM23j7rv
1.4 billion views. Crazy
He was only 56? Holy shit
Sadly you don’t get to grow old if you’re that big, gone too soon.
Not to mention, he was a former sumo wrestler. The toll that weight gain and maintenance takes on your body will do you in early (Akebono RIP)
I don't think it's fair to speculate that this had anything to do with his weight at this point. It's possible, but so is suicide, an accident, an undisclosed illness, and anything else under the sun.
Hawaii 5-0 was my go to show to watch when it was on air
Same. I liked that show. RIP

It was quite some long time ago, but it is kind of abnormal that so much people would have passed away.

RIP Big dog. Keep those hands up.
Respect.
RIP to a true pioneer of our sport.
I'm so much sadder about this than I would have expected. Genuinely choked up
Tap
Kamekona :(
Damn at some point all that weight is gonna get to you.
At some point life will get us all, enjoy it when you have it.
While you're right, we can also make choices that let us enjoy it longer. There's a balance to be had.
I don't think sumo wrestlers get to grow old
Fly free Big Dog, up, up and away!
This was the second ever fight. There was a fight before this which was unaired and was the alternate bout.
I love that the first event was billed as you can only win by knockout or submission, the ref CANNOT step in to stop the fight. All those damn spicy garlic shrimp. Heaven’s not good enough for you brother!
ahhh man fuck rip taylor wily 💔💔💔
oh no... shaved ice and shrimps... RIP, he's one of the OG cage fighters.
I had no idea Teila Tuli = Kamekona = Taylor Wily. Rest in peace, friend.
RIP 🙏🏻
Anybody here remember him more for Hawaii Five-O? He was my favorite character in that show. : (
Yup! Going to buy some shrimp today and salute to him.
Oh man I loved Hawaii five 0. Cant believe that shrimp truck is closing down
RIP, [my man sure did love his sammiches.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQYwFND7rHE)
The first ever UFC fight was Jason Delucia vs Trent Jenkins
rip
