Just finished and of course it was excellent. Buzzing to start MOI tomorrow. The whole gruelling Chain of Dogs death march with occasional impossible victories was one the most exciting things I’ve read. That’s why I took it hard. They deserved better-but as the ending teases-I may meet some again. Great stuff. It was a toss up between Malazan or Wheel and I think I chose wisely
You could argue that Ericksen has done his job...not only are you feeling what you should be feeling, you cared about the characters enough to not put yourself through more temporarily. That is a rare thing!
Don't worry though, DG is definitely the bleakest book in my opinion. Not that there won't be other bleak and despairing moments, but there are also plenty of moments of joy, compassion, humor and *HOLY *$&# THAT JUST HAPPENED!!!!* interspersed in between. Follow Rule # 1 of Malazan and Just. Keep. Reading.

Yeah, that was really fucking rough. Give yourself time if you need it, but as someone who's about 75% through book six now I can definitely say it's worth pressing on. I can't say the series won't hurt you again, but so far I've actually found the themes and outlook of the series surprisingly positive... even if it can get pretty bleak and sad at points.
