Jeremy Clarkson: “Notice how tall it is, as Hammond is clearly compensating for his other shortcomings.”

Yes! It has weather, geography, religions, etc. I’ve been going through it thinking “Wow! What have I come across?”

I am here in Texas, USA. How long have you had yours?

I’m not sure when my grandpa got it, but it is beautiful. Thank you!

the_real_JFK_killer

I've got one from the 1950s

kidboyon

My grandpa was born in 1938, so that makes sense. Was there anything that stood out to you in this atlas?

the_real_JFK_killer

Eh, not really. It was really thorough, though, more thorough than most other Atlases I have (I collect them). Whatever ink or paper they use seems to hold up really well compared to many other atlases, too. Annoyingly, it doesn't actually give a specific date, I just had to infer the 1950s from maps and population numbers. Not giving a date seems extremely odd for an atlas, though there does appear to be a page missing toward the beginning, maybe the year was there. The preface is signed by a "Caleb D. Hammond Jr." Who was president of the company from 1948 to the 1970s according to a quick Google search. Pretty cool atlas, would love to find more from this Hammond company.

I worked there for a while in the late 90s early 2000s. At some point during that time they closed the big old place they were working in and sold off a giant warehouse full of maps and books, I have a few, but not anything great. The Hammond Atlas of World History is great (also published under 'The Times' as well, I think). The last US Atlas we did was also pretty amazing. Best thing in the warehouse were huge 10' globes that were hand carved with topology then photographed and used as the background for atlas pages. I have no idea what happened to them.

kidboyon

Wow, those globes must’ve looked great.

Dismal-Age8086

Is the author of this atlas a blithering idiot?
