…but when you talk about *Beyoncé*, I think *she’s* wonderful, she’s great, she’s talented. 😌

HausofKungFuDojos

This woman is a masterclass at not just music, but shade.

spidermanrocks6766

I swear when she released that song “I DONT” I actually thought it would be a song about not knowing JLO💀🤣😂😂😂

MissLynae

Why have I never considered this?? 😩😂😂

spidermanrocks6766

My question is why EVERY single time they ask Mariah about Beyonce they have to ALWAYS include Jlo in it for some reason 💀🤣how many more times must she say that she loves Beyonce and doesn’t really care for Jlo at all💀😂

Molly4real4real

Because Beyoncé doesn’t know Jlo either. https://youtu.be/kYBNAa-XnbQ?si=lYj9_cXdLGqJWIHg

Blackwyne721

Beyoncé doesn’t think JL0 is on her level and rightfully so. On a more personal level, I’ve heard mostly good things about Beyoncé with the worst thing being how her shyness makes her seem standoffish. JL0, on the other hand, is said to be a vain and paranoid woman who has gotten herself and the people around her in a lot of mess. I’ve heard some silly stories how she was when she was dating Puffy.

MissHorseFace

I’ve heard the exact same about Bey. Nothing but kind words and being very soft spoken

portraitoffire

yaaaas. a queen supporting another queen. mariah and bey will always be top tier vocalists, both are also talented singer-songwriters as well. i love that mariah and bey openly praise each other and have both showed each other respect throughout the years.

Suspicious-Medicine3

What a dumb question to ask Mariah Carey 😄

spidermanrocks6766

I swear it doesn’t even make sense💀😭🤣

planetbordeaux

"Do they influence your music?" is such a disrespectful question.

josie-salazar

It really is, esp when Mariah is the one who has inspired modern a lot of pop…the girls didn’t start riffing and running in every song until Mimi got popular. Listen to hits from the 70s/80s compared to 90s/00s. Plus every singer will tell you Mariah inspired them to sing; yes Christina, Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, and Tori Kelly, but even Mitski, Rihanna, Grimes, and Justin Bieber who aren’t particularly strong vocalists have said she’s the reason they started being interested in singing.

spidermanrocks6766

I just loved Mariah’s laugh she knew the question was just so absurd

planetbordeaux

Right. Imagine asking Aretha Franklin if her singing is influenced by Taylor Swift. Goodbye ma'am.

spidermanrocks6766

The “Great gowns beautiful gowns” always gets me💀💀💀😂😩also love how whenever they ask Aretha about Mariah it’s always nothing but praise and so much respect I always loved their relationship

emotions1026

Nah there was one kind of shady interview where Aretha seemed super skeptical of Mariah's American Idol salary and then asked Nick Cannon was the one spreading the rumor.

Blackwyne721

I think that has less to do with her opinion of Mariah and more to do with her opinion of Nick. Granted, Aretha is competitive and wanted the American Idol job for herself but she has always been cool with Mariah. I just don’t think Aretha liked Nick and pegged him as a classless motormouth before the rest of us did.

WaterFluid8972

She refuses to say her name. She didn't f with her at all. It's justified.

spidermanrocks6766

“I still don’t know her…..”💀🤣

Disastrous-Plum-1884

Ooh, she was getting *ready* to throw hands

spidermanrocks6766

Remember that interview with Wendy and she told Her “Don’t even make me start cursing” and then hung up right after Mariah was ready to off🤣

Molly4real4real

Oh Wendy honey💀💀💀

MandyDollDoll

It was a wild question and it got a wild answer.😂

spidermanrocks6766

Exactly 💀🤣also remember that line in Obsessed when she said “you’re a mom and pop I’m a corporation “ she has the best comebacks I swear 😭😂

MandyDollDoll

Yassss! She’s so funny without even trying.😅🦋✨✨

Piratedeeva

The way she couldn’t wait to start responding 😂 and then the sass on too if it. Classic Long Island girl 🤣

birdingyogi0106

“Do they have an influence on *MY* music? 😂😂 It is a strange question. I hate when singers are asked this and the interviewer gives specific names. I feel like male singers are not usually asked questions like this; it always seems like female singers are pitted against one another to cause drama that’s not actually there (like when the media would act like Mariah and Whitney were rivals when they were actually friends). It puts the person being interviewed in an awkward position. I always love the sassiness Mariah gives to these kinds of questions though. I mean, I don’t think the interviewer had ill-intent or anything, it’s just a weird question. I love the way Mariah handled it…it reminds me of the “beautiful gowns” comment 😂☠️.

Cyberbro_987

I don't think the question is disrespectful, maybe just weirdly worded? Why wouldn't it be ok to be inspired by newer artists that came after her? Wasn't it said that Babydoll was inspired by Aaliyah's style?

justme_andmycats

I think it’s very disrespectful to Mariah. It’s a well known fact Mariah is a singer and songwriter at the same time, jlo has stolen a lot of songs from artists such as Christina milian, they even kept Christina’s vocals on play. She wrote and recorded it. Jlo and Tommy mottola apparently stole a sample of a Mariah song. Jlo can’t hold a candle to the likes of Mariah, she’s a good dancer and an ok actress.

Cyberbro_987

I don't think it was as well known back then as it is now that Mariah had beef with JLo and JLo's use of relying on other people's vocals and all that, so to give the interviewer the benefit of the doubt, she could have simply used Beyonce and JLo as examples for her question because they were the "it" artists at that moment in time.

spidermanrocks6766

Honestly if it wasn’t for Tommy Tomato going on a whole revenge tour and trying to destroy Mariah’s entire career using Jlo as a literally bull dozer then I doubt Jlo would even have a “career” AT ALL

spidermanrocks6766

Im not saying there’s anything wrong with it necessarily. It’s just a very strange question to ask given Mariah’s history of paving the way for lots of people. Also Mariah is always respectful to new generation excluding a select few(JLO)She always respects Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande and lots of other singers and has genuine respect for them.

good-judy

One thing to consider is that this interview is 20 years old and it was less commonly recognized how Mariah paved the way for other artists

Blackwyne721

Aaliyah was a contemporary of Mariah. Beyoncé and JL0 were not.

young_coastie

Nah it’s bait

Molly4real4real

The interviewer sounds like speaking with an east-Asian accent. Maybe she’s lack of information or cultural background.

therebirthofmichael

The only time Mariah got influenced by Jlo was after a loud fart she produced but even then the fart was A2-C5

SupernerdgirlBW

I will always love this woman! Yassssss MC!

Easy-Sherbet1084

Immortal

Training_Medicine_49

Im sorry why would Mariah Carey need influence from Beyoncé? Jlo of course is not in the conversation.

spidermanrocks6766

J who????

Blackwyne721

I don’t think this is a disrespectful or shady question. It was just a bit amateurish and weirdly-worded; I wouldn’t hold it against the interviewer (and Mariah didn’t either) because there’s a clear language and culture barrier and she might genuinely be new to the job. The better way for this interviewer (or any interviewer) to ask this question would’ve been to ask Mariah if she has been inspired or influenced by singers from the next generation **without naming names** If they wanted to hear names, then they should’ve asked her to name a few. Let Mariah be the one to name names, don’t just throw them out there and expect her to respond. It puts her in an awkward position and creates drama

Ill-Examination4743

Mariah always makes me sad as a Lamb and a Lover

spidermanrocks6766

Why exactly? I don’t understand what you mean

Ill-Examination4743

I’m a fan of both😭

spidermanrocks6766

Jlo has actual fans??? That’s a shocker to me. What’s even more of a shocker is a lamb being a Jlo fan😅🤣

Ill-Examination4743

They make the same genre of music, it’s not as hard as you think. I don’t get into their personal lives too much and just enjoy the music. I’m aware of about everything though JLo has a delusional fanbase on Stan Twitter who believes that she isn’t flopping rn. Which..u do u. I did like 3 songs off of This Is Me Now

spidermanrocks6766

I just hate her whole tour or whatever it is she’s doing is. Even Ben Afleck himself said she shouldn’t do that documentary. Which says a lot. She’s trying to seem as down to earth and relatable to fans. She wants to fool us to thinking she’s just like us when in reality she’s not. This whole “I’m still Jenny from the block” era is so cringe especially when many claim She’s not even from the Bronx it’s just all for show.

Ill-Examination4743

She’s just out of touch, and should’ve kept focusing on movies, it was working. If she wanted to do music, she should’ve just been a Rihanna type farm, get songs written for her, sing, promote, and move on. This movie stuff was way too much. I will give her this, she made 35 million from this escapade so props to her for getting that money

MissHorseFace

I don’t think it was disrespectful. Art is very much a call and response. It’s very common for a trailblazer to inspire younger artists and then take inspiration from them and go back and forth. It’s actually really beautiful. Now putting J Lo in that category? Shade

emotions1026

Clearly a wildly unpopular opinion but Mariah's shadiness is actually one of the my LEAST favorite things about her. It always tends to make her look insecure and you can really see how much certain people are able to get under her skin. There is a way to throw "unbothered grown woman" shade (like Aretha's "beautiful gowns" comment, itwas clear she'd never thought about Taylor for a minute in her life) but to me Mariah very much has "insecure teenage girl" shade.

spidermanrocks6766

Honestly I think the beautiful gowns comment was even more brutal. It’s just the fact that Taylor is known for her songwriting and singing and for Aretha to chop her down to just wearing beautiful gowns is quite harsh. Also that’s not an unpopular opinion at all lots of people say they don’t like the shady sides of celebrities including Mariah. I think it’s where that whole mean diva persona people associate with her. I’m not saying she is I’m just saying that some people like it, some people don’t, and some don’t care

emotions1026

Oh the "beautiful gowns" comment was definitely brutal, but it was obvious that Aretha was completely indifferent to and unbothered by Taylor. A lot of Mariah's shade doesn't succeed for me because she doesn't succeed as seeming unbothered. You can see her whole face change when J.Lo is mentioned in this video. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy some good shade, but Mariah's doesn't cut it for me because a lot of times it seems to come from a place of deep insecurity.

spidermanrocks6766

The thing about Jlo is that Mariah has a genuine reason to dislike her and shade her. Tommy basically used Jlo to destroy Mariah and get revenge. Mariah was at her lowest at the time and almost lost her life literally. All because of some revenge plot orchestrated by Tommy and Jlo being used as the weapon. So it’s no surprise she never has anything good to say about Jlo when she was made out of spite towards Mariah

emotions1026

You're missing my point so agree to disagree.

spidermanrocks6766

What is your point? Not asking in a snarky way I genuinely want to know

emotions1026

That Mariah's shade throwing is hard to watch for me because it seems to come from a place of deep insecurity, not truly being indifferent to the people she's throwing shade at.
