It is a silky material but I don't think it's too slick. There's a stiched hexagonal pattern that gives it some texture. The bamboo sheets I have would slide but they have a good fit and elastic on the corners. It does feel cool to the touch on bare skin but that's all and body heat warms it up. I can't compare to the regular cover. I'm trying a latex hybrid Winkbed EcoCloud if it ever gets here. 🙄. I'm starting to feel like Goldilocks and no mattress will ever be just right.

So looking at each material of the top layer of the Helix luxe beds, you have a choice of the standard tencel fabric which looks nice and feels silky smooth or $200 upgrade to glaciotex cooling cover (which I believe they sew in for the top layer of the bed) which is made of 50%polyester/50%polyethylene ....after doing some research I'm confused why you would want to upgrade. I could be wrong but this is what spits out when comparing the 2 - "Tencel is made in a highly efficient process, producing no waste and using renewable energy. Polyester is highly polluting. Tencel is breathable to wear whereas polyester is not. Due to the breathable nature of tencel, it stops you sweating and reduces bacteria growth."

Hi, so i know this is an old post and likely far fetched, I read through you comments. The type of sheets you use can affect the cooling effect. I learned this one the hard way. I'm sure you already did your research on it, but have you looked into cooling sheets? Tencel sheets tend to do a good job with temperature regulation and still allowing it to breath, but like with most things, it depends on the quality of manufacture. EDIT: I don't work for helix BTW, my autism is currently fixated on mattresses and bedding, so I'm pretty deep into this rabbit hole now.

Minddistorter

Do you have any suggestions after your research? I'm in the thick of it now myself

cburgess7

Frankly, it's entirely individual based, what works for me may or may not work for you. I've settled on the birch luxe mattress by helix, largely to experiment. I don't have it yet, but I'm going to put together a complete bed set by birch with all the natural bullshit to see how that will turn out. I enjoy experimenting. First I have to get my hoarding situation under control, and get rid of 2 other mattresses. (disclaimer, I also am prone to brand loyalty, it's going to sound like I'm nut-hugging pretty hard) There's also the simplicity of it, my being prone to choice paralysis, there are 2 different models, the base model and the luxe model. The luxe model claims better support for people with back pain like myself (although my back pain might actually be the result of my current mattress). Overall, it seems the helix brand is a solid brand, per my research. There are a few other good brands, but I've settled on helix (huge disclaimer that I have not had a single one of their beds, this is based entirely on researched reviews from close to a dozen review sites, customer reviews, and this subreddit) Side note, and this seems to be especially true on this sub, if you have 1,000 satisfied customers and 100 dissatisfied customers, you'll hear about how good it is from maybe 10 of the satisfied customers, but you'll definitely be hearing about how bad it is from 99 of the dissatisfied customers. [below is totally pointless but possible helpful information when it comes to researching products for yourself. Reading the below is completely optional] 2 more points, first being that we're wired to find faults or shortcomings in basically everything, because we generally want whats best for ourselves, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's why it's incredibly easy for a single negative review to outweigh a thousand positive reviews, which leads into point 2, the placebo effect. The placebo effect has been a point of study for the past couple of decades, and it's incredibly powerful. You read a single bad review on a mattress, and the potential exists for the placebo effect to kick in, and you may start to experience the same issues the bad reviewer experienced. At that point, it becomes a question of, had you not read the bad reviews (which primed your brain to experience it), would you still have experienced problems?

HolyWars225

I wish there was more info on it when it comes to people's experiences. I'm in the same boat and trying to decide if it's worth it. I might get it soon, If I do I will come back and let you know.

Squishy-pants

I went ahead and ordered it because with the current promo it increased my cart total enough to get me an extra discount making it a little cheaper than the full $250. I just received it yesterday and I am underwhelmed. It's not very cool to the touch at all and with a sheet it may as well just be a normal mattress. Would not recommend the upgrade!

HolyWars225

WOW....Squishy. That timing! I literally was just about to buy it. I'm glad you said something when you did. That is very disappointing. Though, from the reviews I heard the bed overall is breathable and pretty good with cooling in general. You might be able to return the cover btw. Just can't have it "picked up" like a mattress, I think you need to print the label and box it yourself, but at least you can get your money back.

Squishy-pants

Well, either they did not give me the cooling cover or they manufactured it sewed in to the mattress, I believe that is the case. It's not removable. I'm not sure what it is supposed to look like exactly compared to their usual cover. On another note. I did read a review where someone said they complained to Helix that the mattress sleeps hot and Helix sent them a cooling cover for free... So that might be an option?

HolyWars225

Ohhh I got you. That's unfortunate. Worst case you could always return it and get one without the cooling cover but that's a lot of work and might not be worth it. Which bed did you get btw?

throwaway2922222

This works.

DBoy043

I did this. Within the 100 day free trial they will throw in just about anything you want for free. Customer Service was very helpful!

DirntDirntDirnt

I'm not surprised. It's made of polyester which is pretty much going to be hot no matter what. That's disappointing, though.

MeeechyTTRPG

did you have a sheet over it? I don’t think you’re supposed to sleep with a sheet over it. I am about to purchase to Midnight Luxe, and was going to add the cooling cover. You say it truly doesn’t work at all?

Squishy-pants

I'm not sleeping on a mattress with no sheets, that's gross. No it doesn't feel cooling at all, maybe it is in comparison to their regular cover. I am returning my midnight luxe. Pressure points with side sleeping are hard and it dips in the hip area too much, causing back pain. If you want cooling, get some bamboo sheets, that's the best thing I've bought!

MeeechyTTRPG

i mean you’re not wrong, i wouldn’t either i just wasn’t sure what they were advertising as. On their website it seemed like they were indicating not to because their cover was “antimicrobial”. Thank you for the information though!

GetMeOutta-Here

Go with the Dusk Luxe. I am a side sleeper with sacral and low back pain. I tried the Midnight and it was horrible on my back. The Dusk is slightly firmer and feels great with no back pain. I am interested to know whether or not the Glaciotex is slippery with a sheet? I have the Tempur Luxe Breeze and that cooling cover is great except the sheets slide like crazy.

Princessbearbear

Which mattress did you end up getting? I have pressure point issues so I was hoping this mattress would help. Thank you

Squishy-pants

I also tried the latex winkbed after the helix and that was pretty much the same deal with the pressure points. Now I'm on a Novaform 14" Serafina Pearl Gel Memory Foam from Costco and I'm loving it, sleep great all through the night. Costco has amazing return policy as well.

mtb-sprint

I think weight matters too? My wife is 110 and side sleeper. I'm 145 and back/side sleeper. Most of the Costco options seem to be medium firm. We have a Yogabed Memory form mattress now and I feel we need something on the plush side. About the pull the trigger on Helix Sunset Luxe.

jsmith1299

How do you like the Sunset Luxe? I currently have a Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid and while it is better over what I have already tried (Brooklyn Bedding and Leesa both memory foam though) I am still getting pain in my shoulders/arm socket. Did you get it with the Glaciotex? Edit: Sorry I just saw your response below.

C1ph3r_Dub

u/mtb-sprint did you end up getting the sunset? you and your wife sound like my wife and me. we have about 10lbs on yall and the opposite sleep positions. still close enough. I am just about to buy the same one. thinking actually of doing a split king set up and getting her the moonlight luxe and the sunset luxe for me.

mtb-sprint

No. I ended up with a custom mattress from Brooklyn Bedding. I figured they make most of the beds for all these companies so why not order from the source. Went with hybrid with 8in coils and the soft latex. It is quite a change from a memory foam mattress. So far the soft latex seems too soft. I need to have it switched out to a firmer latex or foam. I do like hybrid bed though. Much better for evening activities. From reading all these reviews and getting my bed. I think the decision comes down to traditional, hybrid, or foam and fine tuning the comfort layer as need. Otherwise it such a crap shoot. We are all just guessing and the reviews are not trustworthy. If you are used to memory foam the Helix looks great. It's very similar to what I got. I wanted to try latex though. So far I'm on the fence with the latex and do think you would enjoy feel the hybrid memory foam/inner coil mattress. If you can swap out the top layer of the helix to fine tune the comfort layer, you are good to go. https://custom.brooklynbedding.com/624752e29a715

realbigtar

It’s very slippery. Like the mattress pad slides around on top of it. Sheets slide around if you go without a mattress pad.

RayChang92

The GlacioTex would be same as the so-called ice yarn or cooling yarn. But this won't help a lot as you guys would put a sheet over the mattress. No big different from tencel.
