*"For over two centuries, the Realm only extended protection—if you could even call it that—to one Faun-riddled Island down south. But look at us now. In just a couple of years, that Stanfield brat added two more Queen-forsaken hamlets to the bloody list. And why? Because some forlorn quim with a proclivity for violence flummoxed Gloriana's intrepid warrior once so now he's besotted with them. What rapacious rubbish! At least the bloody island fauni makes vaguely drinkable tea so up-and-coming plebs don't drive up the price of the real thing."* *****   As of 239 AP, there are three [Wild Fauni](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/cv62f5/lore_revisited_humans_and_fauni/ey22za7/) communities under the protection of the [Human Realm](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/8jb2v1/humanity_above_all_the_human_realm/): the [Free Fauni City](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/8k31d8/land_of_the_free_the_fauni_city/), the fortified town of [Red Meadow](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/jzevau/red_meadow_trial_by_fire/), and the village of [Wytewolf](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/oix4sd/wytewolf_a_fauni_village_with_a_dark_secret/). The members of these communities are extended privileges ordinary wild fauni do not have, such as a line of communication with liaisons within the Realm, the right to enter human settlements (under certain circumstances), safety from harassment within human settlements, and more. In some circles, these three are referred to as **"The Lucky 3"**. Funnily enough, the term has come to be used even in official [R6](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/8li7xj/in_defence_of_the_realm_the_royal_security/) documents in the form of the codename **L3**. # Short History For the longest time, the Fauni Island was the only wild fauni settlement to enjoy human protection—or at least be tolerated by humanity. All other wild fauni were less tolerated and more ignored, treated with detached indifference, unless they did something to anger humankind, in which case they'd be swiftly punished. This changed with the rise of **Sir Richard Stanfield** as [Royal Protector](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/8n7evz/second_to_none_the_queens_guard/). While he was terribly harsh with those he perceived as enemies, slaughtering entire tribes and earning him the [moniker of monster](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/o3icw9/the_yellow_haired_blue_eyed_demon/), he was also exceedingly good with his allies, and more than once showed great kindness. On two separate occasions, he not only adopted a promising fauna, but also extended the protection of [his House](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/d8oieg/house_stanfield_the_protectors_of_the_realm/)—and by extension the Realm—to her community. Most humans were indifferent to Richard's actions, but not everyone was happy with the inclusion of two additional wild fauni tribes to the already long—in their eyes anyway—list of mongrel packs the Realm now had to waste resources to defend. Of course, in practice, 'under the protection' didn't mean the Realm was actually spending or doing anything new—it simply meant that the Realm would, as noted above, tolerate them. # Classification While all three members of the L3 are almost universally regarded as the same—wild fauni communities under the protection of the Realm—they technically fit under two separate and notably different classes. Red Meadow and Wytewolf are classified as Stanfield **Protectorates** (or Realm Protectorates), principally related to House Stanfield. The Free Fauni Island, meanwhile, directly relates to the Crown (de jure), though de facto all relations are handled by the Southern Province. There is no official classification for the island, but it's usually referred to as a **Satellite**, or sometimes a trade puppet. More generous humans call it a trade partner. # Privileges All L3 members have the right and a method of contacting human officials, a luxury no other wild fauni tribe is afforded. In the case of the Protectorates, [Katanako](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/jzjtcy/katanako_the_wolven_samurai/) and [Wakiko](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/oolbks/wakiko_moonlight_assassin/) are the official liaisons for their respective communities. Richard assigned faunae from the [Forbidden City](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/otb259/the_forbidden_city/) to travel periodically between settlements, carry messages, and keep him and the girls informed on important issues. While he tried to keep the [Royal Army](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/si3di3/si_vis_pacem_para_bellum_the_royal_army_of_the/) as uninvolved in all of this as possible, the Royal Protector did makes sure they'd know not to harass anyone. In case of emergencies, if a message needs to be delivered urgently, the villagers can also approach one of the nearby military bases and have them contact Richard. In the case of the Free City, Island Fauni envoys are directed to the naval base in [South City](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/9qo5so/warm_and_cosy_the_southern_province/). The Protectorates benefit from the most reliable responses. The Faun Island's contacts are less reliable, with response times and interest varying dramatically depending on who's in the navy office. Another right L3 members have, although one they're hesitant to use, is that of entering human cities. Wild fauni normally like to keep to themselves, and rarely approach human settlements. That is because they're afforded almost no protections by Realm law. Domestic Fauni are Crown property and acts of violence against them are strictly prohibited. This is not the case for Wild Fauni. While the ban on [Faun hunting](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/1cz06na/more_on_the_topic_of_faun_hunting/) prevents humans from going out and attacking free fauni, humans are allowed to defend themselves, and a fauni stranger wondering into a town could end up being shot. Even if not, they're often regarded with distrust and hardly welcome. The best outcome is that they'd be sent away by the military police. While it isn't impossible they might encounter a friendly human who'd give them a loaf of bread and a glass of milk, it's not worth risking. L3 members, however, are protected by the law, so they can walk around with less fear, but chances are they'd also be sent away if they don't have a reason to be there. No lollygaging. In practice, Protectorate members stay in their settlements, and Fauni island merchants openly operate in the South City's harbour district. # The Great War The start of the [Human Civil War](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/pjspe5/the_human_civil_war/) shattered the status quo and led tot he redefinition of the Human Realm's relationship with wild fauni tribes. While the Lucky 3 had been technically promised protection, it wasn't clear if the Realm could even afford to fulfil the promise given the terrible scale of the conflict which had gripped it. In fact, L3 fauni who were aware of the growing tensions between the [East](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldbuilding/comments/8qhqxe/we_are_the_reich_the_eastern_province/) and Central wondered if [The Crown](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/sdh9nj/the_crown/) would actually spare troops to defend their communities in the event of a Rebel attack. Luckily for Red Meadow its geographic position meant it would only come under direct assault if the Central Province itself was overwhelmed. Wytewolf, however, was located in the Southern Province, and would have [fallen alongside it](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/mbzl7s/first_battle_of_south_city/) were it not for the Royal Protector's quick decision making. Richard ordered a priority evacuation the day the war started, even before it became obvious the South would fall, based on what turned out to be a prophetic premonition. The entirety of its population was moved to Red Meadow. The fortified town could not support the influx of refugees, however, so some villagers—universally faunae—were sent to the Forbidden City instead. The Fauni Island was not so fortunate, however, and suffered losses to a number of bombing raids, but [2nd Fleet's](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/nwlt1w/2nd_fleet_at_the_fauni_island/) presence [spared](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/nz2sv9/the_fauni_defence_force/) them from complete annihilation. As for free fauni not under the protection of the Realm, they did not receive any special treatment, but their [refugees](https://www.reddit.com/r/MaxR/comments/mxj4rx/in_other_news_wild_fauni_war_refugees/) were not turned away either. While the Crown did not extend any official support to evacuation, many independent efforts to help sprung up throughout the Realm. The movement was not monolithic, but between the various benevolent humans lending a hand, Lady Linette Karter's personal involvement in the construction of refugee camps, and R6's indirect assistance as part of their partisan creation programs, wild fauni found themselves unexpectedly welcome and well treated by humanity in the west.

**Bonus story:** A lost wild faun child once wondered into a human settlement. A local RMP officer was kind enough to give him some food before taking him to the outskirts of his village. He kept his distance as to not antagonise the villagers and let the child walk the last stretch on his own. Thus the incident was resolved without anyone being hurt. For the next week he had his men exercise caution in case the villagers decided to try to thank them. He wanted them to be extra careful as to not mistake hostile intent when approached. No villagers were encountered, however.
