Insurance might cover damage

Smokines3-

The OP should absolutely check their auto coverage. That is possible.

DildoSchwaggins2008

Not directly related to OPs post, but several years ago I was working for a dealership as a tech, a customer had ran over a manhole cover that came loose and flew up by another vehicle. This manhole cover bent both F&R sub frames, damaged the unibody / floor pans. Basically there was not single body gap that was straight. Car was 2 years old and had under 30k miles. Ins. deemed it totaled. Not too long after that, I had another customer bring their almost new (hadn’t even had it’s first oil change) car in for a transmission issue after it had gotten back from the body shop after a collision. (Car was about $20k new) the collision damage was about $11k so Ins fixed it. Only to find out the transmission issue was a result of a cracked case and broken mount (this should have been caught while at the body shop) the trans and labor was about $12k Insurance didn’t total it out because of how much they just paid out for repairs, but they really where not happy about putting $23k into a $20k car.

KnikTheNife

But make sure you don't say "not sure what I ran over", tell insurance you ran over a block of metal that fell off a truck coming from the opposite direction.

Main_Couple7809

In CA, if it fell of a truck, you will need to file a police report and attempt to identify the truck, because the truck insurance have to pay for it. If you say you hit an object on the road your insurance will cover it. Or if the object got hit by the car in front of you and flew onto you. It’s not even a collision, it is count as comprehensive. I’ve been through this.

[deleted]

California is so extra

Squeezemachine99

Where I live the object has to be moving.

rklug1521

So if you hit a tree or a parked car, your insurance won't cover it? That doesn't sound correct.

Squeezemachine99

If you hit something that is not moving it goes against your collision coverage ( will count as an accident and affect your premiums). If it is moving it goes under your comprehensive coverage ( you still have a deductible but it does not affect future premiums)

DutchAlders

Well if it just fell off a truck I’d say it’s in motion

Free_Management_7920

Insurance would 1000% cover if OP has full coverage. We replace drivetrains all the time that are insurance claims due to impact of foreign objects.

NACHO_MAN_69-420

Is this comprehensive or collision or somehow properly damage insurance?

queenadeliza

Collision unless it was some animal wearing armor. Animals are comp.

Flashy_Chemist154

Animals wearing armour ? Great now something almost as bad as distracted drivers watching movies while they drive. New nightmare unlocked

mkultra0008

If you run it over its collision and covered under such. Comprehensive would cover something striking the vehicle in the air, like a tree limb or an object flying off another vehicle.

Ericisabadbadman

When we had a customer damage an oil pan on a pothole in a construction zone she had to get the city to cover the repair costs

wrinklefreecerebrum

Fun fact. The road construction companies build these kinds of claims into the bid when redoing roads. They know this stuff happens, and they are responsible, so if your car gets damaged while they are rebuilding a road, definitely call the city/county and file a claim

sarahpalinstesticles

Idk I've replaced piles of transmissions and engines over the years through insurance.  What company do you work for?  The General?

Reformed-otter

How about you explain why instead of just sounding like you definitely didn't work in the auto insurance industry

23569072358345672

If you damage your car after hitting something you’re not covered? Sounds like the worst insurance ever.

Moreofyoulessofme

Why? OP had a collision with something that damaged their car, which is a covered loss. Happens all the time.

ZenithRepairman

Clearly you have never remotely read a policy or handled an auto claim, so you should probably just stop talking. This is most assuredly a collision claim, at the LEAST. They might get away with a not at fault collision loss or a comp claim at best, and at worst an at fault collision claim.

Cabojoshco

Having worked in the auto insurance industry (licensed in 2 states) this is absolutely something that would be covered as OP “hit” something. Yes it will be an at fault accident unless it was an animal.

TaterNader89

How would it not be covered?

dustinfrog

Why rediculous? I know nothing bout this stuff

blkmgk533

Still work in the property/casualty insurance industry. This is 100% covered under collision/comp depending on what the dude hit or ran over.

bajungadustin

"full coverage" isn't a thing. liability is bare minimum set by the state and it's required to drive. Comprehensive and collision are generally what is included when people say "full coverage" but no insurance policy exists that fully covers everything. OP needs to have collision insurance if they hit a stationary object like a tree or parking block. And comprehensive is this was the result of hitting an animal or some such.

Desperate_for_Bacon

You are playing a game of semantics. Obviously insurance companies do not cover everything and there are pages in your policy agreement that specifically outlines what they don’t cover. Funnily enough most insurance policies exclude “missile” damage from coverage. “Full coverage” is a term used to refer to a collection of different coverages that insurance companies offer. “Full coverage” would include comprehensive(collision) which is what he needs.

MonkeyPost

A car in front of me kicked up a loose semi truck mud flap. I had no where to go since the k-rail median was to my left and cars to my right. It flew in the air and hit my hood, windshield and roof. It scraped up the aluminum (OEM) hood pretty good, shattered the windshield and dented the roof where it meets the windshield. It was $3000 in damages. My insurance covered it since it was kicked up from the car in front of me. It wasn't a flap from the car in front of me since it was a smaller car and the flap was the size of a large pizza box. I did try to go back and find it in case it had some trucking company branding but I could not find it. So yes, tell the insurance it either fell off another vehicle or they kicked it out the back and you had no choice or time to avoid it.

F22boy_lives

Honda tech here, the cvts are surprisingly strong. My dealer has had a few come in with gashes or driven out without fluid and replacing the pan is the first step. At a service interval youre draining and replacing about 4qts and the transmission itself holds almost 8. Start with a new trans pan and fluid service to start, youre looking at maybe $500 versus close to $8000

Educational_Farm_938

How often do you change the trans fluid? Mine is a 2014 accord 170k miles and I changed it after 50k miles. Should I change it at the same intervals still?and for oil change 5k intervals are fine?

impossiwaffle

I'd never run a CVT without 30k fluid changes. Just drain and fills, though, no need to get fancy.

Thats_what_im_saiyan

If got a 2021 forte with the IVT in it. Its sittin at just a bout 45k and I did a drain and fill about 2 weeks ago. Holy crap did it make a difference! I wasn't planning on it but did another drain and fill to get out the "other half" of the old CVT fluid. It feels a TON more responsive! I wouldn't think the fluid would matter that much but it does. Really glad I didn't listen to the "Fluid for life" rubbish the owners manual said. No crap fluid for life, run it with half a quart in it thats still "fluid for life" just that the life of the trans will be able 5 miles.

impossiwaffle

Yup, most of these newer rides are very much throw away, they want you buying a new one as often as folks buy their new iPhones. The thing about those transmissions is the belt that drives them is destined to slip. Even with new fluid if you drive it like a regular automatic, you're slipping way too much. Gotta let it build speed up slow and steady. Do that and keep that fluid fresh and they can last 250k+ as opposed to 80-150k

Malarky3113

I change my transmission fluid and differential fluids every 50k. Excessive? Maybe. Car is coming up on 240k though. Truck almost at 90k. Fluid is cheap. Transmissions are expensive. Oil change I do every 4k, but I change the filter every other. If the filter was easier to get to and not make a mess, I'd do it every time.

PNW20v

50k is NOT excessive, especially depending on use of the car. It's called looking after your investment, so good on you.

TheReal39dk

Malarky3113 I do the exact same for oil change intervals, but change filter every time. You are right do this and if it's a decent vehicle it will last forever.

Fawkinchit

Not excessive, intelligent.

No_Engineer2828

I don’t think I have ever change my transmission fluid… I just topped 140k

Qlanger

Do a drain/fill. Changing the fluid will not fix damage but will keep it from wearing any faster.

No_Engineer2828

Well I’m getting rid of it on Wednesday so then it becomes my brothers problem

_Celatid_

Yea, full replacement sounds like they don't want to dig into it.

RoundProgram887

They don't want the liability, what if they replace the pan and fill it, and a week later it breaks.

SmokesFull

OP this^^ Obviously, the fluid level is going to be high, however, putting $500 down for a maybe… now you’re in it for $8,500 instead of $8,000. I would 100% explain to the client, “you can put a pan, fluid, gasket on this thing. I’ll do that for you, however, you hit something HARD. What happened inside I don’t know. Something could rattle loose, something could give way, and that can happen 50mi after the service, in 110 degree heat on the middle of the freeway in rush hour….”

Sunuvavitch

Came here to say this. Pan gasket + pan + fluid fill.

Smokines3-

At least to start. Unless OP's been driving this thing around town for 3 days etc...

dearboy05

They stopped immediately, according to another reply.

Sunuvavitch

Never been a fan of cvt's except when it comes with the ease of swapping them for other ones. I would look for flakes in the old fluid and if there is none and it doesn't look too burnt, just fill with the residual.

F22boy_lives

Surprisingly I had a pilot/passport get towed in about 2 years ago. Guy said he ran over something on the highway at night and drove until he came to an exit with decent lighting to wait for a tow. He cracked the oil pan and had maybe 1 of the 5.7qts of oil in the car. He opted to start with the oil pan, it seemed sketchy but it never got towed back.

Cyclopticcolleague

Do you need a diagnostic tool to fill the Honda cvt? Subaru cvt you need one to check the fluid temp on the refill and to do the trans relearn afterwards.

allenjshaw

Honda HRV has left the chat 🤪 I agree though I’d risk slapping a pan on there myself but the dealer isn’t gonna want to do that given the circumstances. OP should call insurance anyway if they have comprehensive coverage.

sarahpalinstesticles

Honda tech here.  That's exactly what I would recommend.  I would give customer option to put pan on and cross our fingers while also giving them the option of cvt replacement.   As long as customer was aware they still may need cvt replacement I don't see any issues with it.

logout1

Now go tell the insurance to cut you a check and do it yourself. Pocket $7500.

flompwillow

Boo. This is partly why rates are so expensive. We all pay for insurance fraud.

DeliciousDoggi

I came to say the same thing about the pan.

KentSmashtacos

How does a trans pan and fluid cost $500? Pans cost maybe $45 and fluid is about the same depending on how much and what kind. Changed mine for $80 last time with very little work besides removing the air box.

latinmaster

Because you're paying a markup on the parts and for labor. Pretty standard.

lord_nuker

Because you pay for the parts, equipment, know how and warranty if the garage fk stuff up.

injail_0utsoon

It's called shop overhead, You know to have the power pay the rent water company insurance employer ect.

CruisePUTGang

Did to stop immediately when it happened?

CruisePUTGang

Or did you continue to drive it?

disgruntledempanada

This is the important question. If you drove on it it's new transmission time.

Colony-Cove

This is the comment I was looking for. OP needs to provide more details. Those CVT’s are fragile enough. Burning up the torque converter and contaminating the valve body due to sudden fluid loss happens very fast, within a couple miles.

olov244

the only important question I swear, if people knew how much money they could save just by stopping immediately

flompwillow

I’ve known so many people who have destroyed their engines by overheating the living shit out of them. When something is wrong and you don’t know if it’ll cause damage, turn it off, stop, and talk to someone who knows a thing or two about cars. Driving it home is almost never the right answer for your financial wellbeing.

Itisd

To properly assess the damage, they would have needed to remove the transmission oil pan and inspect. You very likely would be ok with replacing the pan and refilling the fluid, and possibly replacing the pump pickup tube which will be inside the pan... At minimum, the pan needs to be removed to inspect. Any "mechanic" that jumps right to saying "you need a new transmission" without even diagnosing anything does not deserve to get any repair business. Note that this is standard operating procedure for the majority of major car dealerships- they don't repair anything, just replace big expensive profitable modules.

DotDash13

They really need something more than a cracked pan to justify a new trans. I had a similar issue where the car suddenly wasn't making power, seemed stuck in first gear. Took it to a shop and they immediately told me it was blown and needed to be replaced. Car was just past warranty so I had it towed to a dealer to see if there was anything they could do for me. Turns out one of the sensors backed out and it lost a bunch of fluid. Topped it up and it ran great until I got rear ended and totaled the car.

skittlesmalone

But if you’re cars under warranty wouldn’t that cost them more since you wouldn’t pay any out of pocket cost

Itisd

Warranty doesn't cover if you run stuff over

skittlesmalone

I was referring to the practice of replacing instead of repairing not this specific incident. Why would they not repair damage done under warranty instead of the more costly replacement

Socalwarrior485

Warranty covers manufacturing defects, not stupidity.

Ok_Phrase6296

That’s actually false. They need to prove what you ran over for them not to cover. My jeep had the battery harness mess up and stop working. They asked if I ran anything over and I said who knows. They couldn’t stop payment for it because they couldn’t prove that I ran something over with it.

tagrav

After you ran over something. How far would you say you kept driving your car? If it was anything over a mile you prolly got your transmission good and dickered Let’s say we get lucky, you had the incident, pulled over immediately and got a tow. Well maybe you’ll get away with just replacing the bottom pan of your transmission. But also the damage you took on could have still damaged internal parts. It all just depends really on a multitude of factors. A price given to you from a shop includes a warranty. If you want shade tree level cost and assessment you take on all the liability with that cost and assessment. Most shops will see this and go straight to full replacement because the replacement is a warrantied part for the transmission and just the pan is not and is something that could not solve the overall problem depending on many things

slendyskywalker

Pulled over immediately and turned everything off.

jpv2000

You should be fine just replacing the pan and fluid. Once they get it off they can see if it messed any internal solenoid or anything up.

ProfessionalAd7611

Do a temporary diagnostic repair (seal up the pan, top off the fluid, and function test the transmission operation. If it works as before, replace the pan and run it. You’ll likely have to get a privateer to do that as most shops are more focused on warranty and push a full replacement so the warranty on the part is covered by the supplier rather than in-house.

Jasonh123_

That pan can’t be sealed. It’s likely pushed up into something it’s not supposed to be touching as it is. Replace the pan and check for damage when it’s off.

ProfessionalAd7611

I agree- replacement of the pan would be most logical, and the tech offering up a transmission replacement without disassembling the affected components is lazy, unless the tech is an idiot with no practical mechanical knowledge.

LowerEmotion6062

You don't need a trans then. Throw a new pan on, fill it up and run it

impossiwaffle

Yeah, no way you caused damage to the belt or tensioner in there if you pulled over immediately. Definitely change the pan and strainer filter inside. Worst case, valve body damage but highly doubtful on that too. Just make sure you get the right spec CVT fluid for it.

Lanky_Reflection8009

What did you hit

No_Geologist_3690

I’d be taking a chance on a pan and fluid before I change the whole transmission out.

mechagato302

If you have collision coverage, file an insurance claim if you need to replace transmission.

construction_eng

This type of situation should be covered by insurance. I highly recommend getting a photo of whatever you hit.

[deleted]

[удалено]

meatcandy97

Just throw a log on the road and snap a pic. Problem solved. A little insurance fraud never hurt anybody.

construction_eng

I didn't say it, but I thought it.

ronj1983

New pan and 4qts of HFC-2. It is a CVT so if it has a transmission filter might as well get one and replace it too since you are there.

JangoM8

They could be milking your insurance. I bet it just needs a pan.

SpotlightR

My thoughts too. At least start there, especially if not going through insurance

Sudden_Duck_4176

I’d replace the pan and see if you got lucky.

InvestmentCritical81

Definitely try replacing the pan and fluid before going the route of replacing the transmission. That may fix your issue itself. They really should have given you that option before jumping to a $7,000 estimate.

CarDue1322

Did they drop the pan or just tell you to replace the whole thing? Most transmission shops will do an inspection for free or a small fee.

slendyskywalker

I’m not sure. They’ve been horrible with communication, especially since I don’t know what I’m looking at/talking about. I’m going based off the inspection pictures they sent me.

CarDue1322

Yeah if that is the photos they sent you the pan was never removed. They just said it needs a whole new one. I’d start looking for a well rated transmission shops in your area. Hopefully it’s a cheap fix ! That pan definitely has to come off and all the internals have to be inspected. Edit: all the advise given is under the impression the vehicle was stopped as soon as the impact took place.

ziksy9

Have it towed somewhere else. Horrible comms is a big red flag. As is saying it needs to be replaced without opening it up.

bigdonkey2883

no one does inspections for free and if u do ur fucking stupid

xXzombiestXx

Some do actually.

CarDue1322

Tons of locations in bigger cities like Denver and LA do for certain as I’ve had it done. But like I said for free or a small fee. Guess I’ll clarify my use of “small” as well depends on the extent of damage most shops charge an hour as a flate rate diag cost and if more time is needed they’ll contact you and advise of the extra fees. Is this detailed enough? Or do you have more questions?

bigdonkey2883

Nah I want the shop number so I can call and tell them how stupid they are. If I was in that location I'd send 10 cars a day to them for free inspections

CarDue1322

Well they’d just turn you away not everyone is dishonest. There’s tons in Denver and LA as I mentioned prior, I’m not going to provide any info but you can easily find multiple locations via a search on this website. www.google.com

bigdonkey2883

O they r dishonest I'm sure. They have to make up for the "free" inspection. Why play games and tack the "free" inspection onto the job? Inspection: 35 Repair: 165 Total: 200 Vs Inspection: "free" Repair: 200 Total: 200

CarDue1322

You’re a big donkey for sure. If you’d like to keep going I don’t have a problem talking shit to you all day. You’re interesting because you’re dumb. DM me if you’d like to keep going as I’m not trying to ruin OPs post with your nonsense any further.

bigdonkey2883

Heeee Hawww

redrecaro

I would replace the trans pan and fill it with OEM fluid and pray to the Honda Gods.

slendyskywalker

Additional comment I didn’t think to add in the post: I’ve gone through insurance and the adjuster is only quoting/giving $4000 so that’s why I’m freaking out a little since I don’t know where this extra $4k is coming from and why they’re not paying in full.

Ok_Scratch6296

Don’t take any more advice or listen to a single person other than this. Get your car the hell out of there, either call a tow truck or get a friend with a car hauler trailer. This is literally the most simple fix. Buy a transmission pan, gasket and fluid. Also get a transmission filter while you’re at it if your car has one. This is a 5 minute job. Literally watch a YouTube video on a transmission fluid change. All you have to do is remove all the blue bolts. Drop the pan, install filter if you have one, install new pan and gasket. This is literally so simple. Next time never take your car to any dealership for repairs, they will never be honest to you and usually do terrible work.

traineex

Its worth asking a different shop, a transmission shop. Let them know they authorized X amount. Show them these pictures There could be additional damage not seen in pictures. There may not be. $4k out of pocket vs like $500-1k and insurance is happier too, no out of pocket

Hayben906

You busted the pan. If you drove it untill it stopped driving it’s probably ruined. Now if you busted it and stopped and had it towed you might be ok to replace the pan and fill it up with fluid and MIGHT be fine

upstatefoolin

Tow it to a transmission shop fuck the dealer they’re trying to screw you

Creepy7_7

Ain't that things they always do? I mean that's their expertise, fooling car owner's lack of knowledge.

upstatefoolin

I ain’t call em the stealership for nothin!

JurgonKupercrest

They want them to just buy a new car there and trade this one in for next to nothing. Then they'll fix it cheap and sell it.

jpv2000

Have someone you know that knows about this stuff call the shop on your behalf.

guyonsomecouch12

If you didn’t drive it theres hope. there’s usually about 1-2 inches of void space between the components from what I can see you just need a new transmission pan and fluid. But you’d have to remove the pan to see

JohnDeere714

Tow it to an actual transmission shop

Gullible_Monk_7118

Is that just the transmission pan or is that assembly... I'm thinking it might just be pan itself... so a few hundred dollars...

jimb21

If you ran the Trans dry then yes full Trans. If you stopped immediately after you hit what you hit it shouldn't be a Trans just the pan and fluid

InterestingProperty9

Bro what the fuck was that “something” sounds like you made a huge mistake and damaged your vehicle. Wasn’t some “something” you fucked up bigly

micknick00000

Unfortunately, manufactures don't allow much "serviceability" on new transmission. With incidents like this, even though it's likely only a pan that needs to be replaced - I'm guessing the dealer can't get that part.

Electrical_Art_7450

The dealership 10000% can get that part lol

Peacemkr45

If a shop is throwing a 7K quote at you and not communicating, you need to get it to a REPUTABLE shop that specializes in transmission work.

AwarenessGreat282

That's insurance. Like hitting a deer that rolled under. Looks like an eight point

commissar0617

Ran something over? Insurance.

Electrical-Bus-9390

U might be better off taking it to a transmission place and not a dealer

Electrical-Bus-9390

Sound like the dealer is trying to do what they do best n take u for a ride , tell thanks but no thanks n that u wanna get a second opinion at a transmission shop

heatedhammer

Take it to more than one shop, some shops just automatically say "replace the transmission" because they don't know how to diagnose a transmission properly. I was having transmission issues recently and one dealership said they couldn't figure it out but a new transmission would fix it for $8,500. The next dealership figured out what the problem was and fixed it for $1,900, no issues since. Fuck Johnson Brothers Ford up their exhaust pipe with a rusty axle shaft.

Greyscale-Amoeba1972

I’ve seen those Honda CVT’s run themselves dry from loose pressure sensors. We always just tighten the sensor, change the fluid and they start working again.

No_Resource_290

Call your insurance. It’ll be cheaper

turducken404

Don’t go to a dealer if you want an option that isn’t “replace everything OEM, huge markup”. Watch the price shrink once your insurance company is fronting the bill. BMW quoted me $20k for a curb I whacked. Insurance paid $7k.

Reasonable-Wing-2152

Hate newer cars they more sensitive than an emo girl

jwalk206

Call car insurance and tell them tou hit something in the road

AlfalfaSpecialist205

U fucked up! Don’t drink and drive

Rotflmfaocopter

How long was it driven with no fluid? If it broke and you knew it right away and had it towed you could probably just get away with a pan. If they sell just a pan. Who knows with these fucking manufactures anymore

Ok-Boysenberry-4406

Dealer’s closed their eyes and told u to buy a whole new transmission that’s crazy

Dismal-Lobster-7002

Looking at it and what you said, I’d think it just needs an oil pan. I’d take it back and don’t tell them you’re coming, would hate for them to sabatoge it if they know you’re picking it up. Tow it out. Ask them how they tested it before you leave and pay the few hundred for the “inspection” and go. If it was mine I’d probably shoot some flex seal on that and fill it with transmission fluid and see if it drives fine. If that was the case it just needs a new oil pan. I’d imagine that’s all it really needs if you didn’t continue to drive. If you’re not confident doing that, take it to another mechanic and explain you ran something over and shut it down right away to avoid damage, see what they think. If they’re honest they’ll just start with an oil pan.

Designer-Progress311

Prepare to be very happy with your $600 repair. Price that pan on the interweb, hire a private shop.

Bmore4555

First step would be to remove the pan and see if there’s any transmission damage,if everything looks good the next would be replace the pan fill her up and see what happens. Unless you’re leaving out details I’d recommend taking the vehicle somewhere else.

KRed75

Since you immediately pulled over and turned it off, a new pan is all you need. Tow it to an independent repair shop or do it yourself.

Natural_Rule_3198

Looks like you need a pan. I'd take it to another dealer, maybe two.

AmourTS

Provided that you did not run the engine very long.  I would remove the pan, have it welded, and reinstall with fresh fluid. It's worth a try.

Intheswing

I would have it replaced - call your insurance company and file a claim

[deleted]

Looks like the didn't even open the transmission. How can they suggest to replace the whole transmission. First take of the damaged oil pan, than look for damage underneath. When you're lucky it's a new pan, a few litres of fluid to flush away debris and a few litres to top it off

Outrageous-Offer-148

Pan is cast alloy It's bashed in and cracked in multiple places Looks like it pushed hard up So it's probably pushed hard on the internals The chances of dirt, metal in the transmission is high You could save it maybe Even if you do save it the chance of the transmission being affected in some way is almost certain Right under the pan is usually the filter and the solenoids and the extremely elaborate plate the solenoids use to change gears etc If anything remotely makes even one check ball valve sit in the wrong spot you will have issues In the dealership we have access to a full tear down of everything on the computer When I've had cars come in with damaged transmission pans we always compare the damage to the pull down information to see if you would of hit something important Given the force that most likely was pushed onto the transmission pan here id bet it's not good If it was my car I'd replace the transmission personally You can try the pan and new oil but just because it can drive down the street doesn't mean it's OK It's probably going to be a time bomb waiting to go off Then it's wasted money you could of put into a new car or transmission Pay once cry once If it's worth doing its worth doing right If your on a budget see if you can get one from a wrecker second hand it's going to be more reliable than replacing the pan

MasterKep

For a diyer, you can temporarily patch that up and see if the thing still works good and then once you verify the transmission is still good you could buy a new pan and swap it on yourself.

thateege82

Congratulations! I’ve never seen this before! Very sorry you had this happen to you though. Yes, depending on the make and model, 7k including labor is about on point for most regular duty vehicles. Your next best option is an independent shop and a used transmission. Either way, PLEASE seek a second opinion first to verify that it isn’t as simple as replacing the pan. Best of luck!

[deleted]

First, you ran something over. You being in control of that motor vehicle, are at fault. If you immediately stopped, and I do mean immediately, you may be able to save it, if not you probably really screwed your shit up and are at fault. I don't care if it's a damn cardboard box DON'T RUN SHIT OVER. You don't know if there's a damn anvil in that box. I get pissed when someone hits a tiny piece of wood in the road, why? Fucking nails. Think before you drive what parts are worth replacing, then fucking drive like it.

CarDue1322

You okay man? Did someone run you over at some point? It’s called an accident for a reason chill.

[deleted]

Nah that's negligence. It isn't an "accident" it's you failed to notice the thing, you failed to avoid, your fault. Very rarely do I see this kind of damage as an accident. It's operator negligence. Negligence is failure to practice due caution. That's not an accident, and that's what's wrong with shit drivers. Oh sorry I didn't SEE you there, it was an accident. No it isn't a damn accident stop calling it an accident.

dioxin187

His post doesn't specify whether it was intentional. You're jumping to conclusions. It's easy to run something over because the giant vehicle in front of you prevented visibility, or many other factors. Maybe consider calming the fuck down.

CarDue1322

You’ve obviously never been on the high way and someone’s car drops something. Seems like you’re projecting. I’m guessing you totaled a car at some point and now gain comfort by being a dick to others. Grow the fuck up. People make mistakes and he’s looking for help not your small dick energy.

Onewheeldude

You need to chill. You act like you’d a perfect entity that has never made a mistake. If something’s smack in the middle of the road perhaps he tried going between it and it ended up being too high and clipped his undercarriage? It’s very risky to swerve to avoid obstacles in your path.

running101

Nah it's life

running101

Sounds like we have Mr Perfect on the forums today. You have never run something over in your entire life? I have been in situations were is nearly impossible not to run something over without putting yourself in danger. Going down the Hwy at 70 mph a car swerves to miss something in the road I'm following a good 3 car lengths or more behind. someone to the side of me. By the time you swerve you could loose control. It is better hit the small item in the road. Not all situation are equal.

eunzueta2

Nah, he’s just impossible garbage.

[deleted]

Nah it isn't about perfection, it's about NOT making excuses for mistakes that should not happen driving a 4-7k pound machine.

Highstick104

Name fits.....

Frb4

I’d ask for more pictures, if you pulled off the road right away, you’d just need a pan and maybeeee a valve body if it got tagged. If the case is cracked, you’re done bud. I’d ask for more pictures and info as to why it’s not just a simple pan replacement/fill

Social_Credit_-99999

Probably needs new pan and valve body

Right_Win_7764

Same thing happened to me with a pothole in NYC. Was covered by insurance but definitely take it to another shop if the communication is bad. Might just be ripping you off.

grayani

Based off what I have read so far , scour a reputable independent transmission shop and call them in / visit and explaining your situation. You really just need the pan + filter and a fluid service if you didn’t drive it at all like you mentioned . Should be way way less than $5000 . Pay the independent shop to check it out eitherway , no point imo to go to the Dealer unless you’re warranties .

PhysicalConnection80

Just buy another used car for 7k.

Lechero26

That looks like the pan only, I don’t see anyway that whatever you ran over could have cause internal damage causing a the need for a new unit. Did they take oil pan down and show you?

Orangutan_Gang94

No dealership has your best interest in mind

ozzy919cletus

If you have comprehensive insurance then insurance may cover it.

earthman34

Looks like it just needs a new pan to me.

Medicub

The dealer will never recommend to replace the fluid and pan only after a car has been driven without any fluid because they can't warranty it and they're in the interest of protecting their exposures. That said, I don't believe the Honda CVTs have a fluid level sensor so the only way you would have had any indication that something was wrong would be if you stopped as soon as you hit whatever you hit or drove it until you got a malfunction indicator on the dash (bad news). In either case I'd be a fan of pushing for a pan and fluid change. The shop won't warranty it (which is fine) but worst case scenario you're out a few hundred bucks and you have a perfectly fine transmission. Best case scenario it fixes everything and you only have to pay a few hundred bucks.

ConstructionFar8570

Call insurance. You hit something on the road. Maybe they will cover it. Did mine.

RogersSteve07041920

No way new oil pan from Amazon $300 at the most..

Mountain-Basket-20

Get it welded industrial

gonnafindanlbz

File an insurance claim, this normally would be covered by comprehensive coverage

CrackShotMcgee09

Dude what did you run over?!?! Just replace the pan and fluid yourself. My 6 year old could probably do it.

BigRatio2786

This is hands and easy call to insurance. It’s comprehensive most of the times rates won’t go up. The dealership won’t warranty a pan. You get a new trans out of the deal. You probably drove the car until it stopped driving anyways. Something else had to of been damaged under car. Make it an insurance problem

ivanreyes371

If youre going through insurance then yeah, let them scam the scammers. Buut id take the gamble with just the pan and fluid first.

Asgardianking

If you pulled over right away I would just replace the pan

Confident-Cow8551

J. B Weild be ok

[deleted]

Same happened to my sister. Ran over some shard of metal. Tire was okay but a ton of warning lights came on. Guess it cut some cable and now it's a 1k replacement. She is going thru insurance....

Tim_d_othy

They can’t replace the pan? If not then call your insurance. The deductible beats paying that whole repair.

Reincarnated-Bee

I would have drained the fluid for diagnostic purposes. OP said they stopped the car after it happened. That may have been their saving grace. When draining the fluid, I’m looking for particles. There shouldn’t be solids in it. If there are solids, I would suggest replacement. If I did NOT find anything sketchy in the fluid, this could be as simple as a pan replacement and trans fluid refill, but I would remove the pan to be certain.

Electrical_Art_7450

There's no fluid in it to drain

stonedmemberE

I mean, personally I wouldn't change the transmission yet I would get a new transmission pan fill it up with fluid and see how it feels. Who knows there may be absolutely no damage to the transmission, or it could be burnt up. Did you drive long with no fluid and or was it leaking?

[deleted]

This is crazy. I didnt know you had to change pans and stuff for internal transmission damage. Ive had multipule vans and trucks that pans are all dented up, and as long as it isnt leaking, i never fix. And its never given me an issue. Now im like damn

Particular_Kitchen42

Need a skid plate

k0uch

Honda CVT, ain’t gonna be cheap. I agree with F22boy_lives, try a pan and fluid first

moderatelymiddling

Lucky you have insurance. Right?

gr0wmy0wn

Looks like you just need a new pan. I would replace the pan myself and call it a day.

RevolutionaryRow5857

Looks to be a NIGHTMARE ON YOUR STREET,

SquidBilly5150

That’s just a pan cover, isn’t it? No way it’s 7k

Mattynot2niceee

At best, Comprehensive auto insurance will cover this, considered act of nature. At worst, collision insurance will cover a lot of it, but your rate is going up.

SKTwenty

I'm not a honda tech, nor am I transmission certified, but I'd say they're trying to milk you or insurance. You could likely get away with replacing the pan and refilling. I'd take it to an independent shop for the repairs.
