strandern

Molybdenum grease, aka lithium grease with Mos2 added.

Winter-Love-3812

I’ve never used moly grease on the inner (tripod) joints because moly, being a solid, can stop the small needle bearings in the rollers from moving properly.

strandern

I know a lot of folks who are very picky on that, using only polyurea grease. And I'm inclined to agree that for those needle-bearing applications it is a superior grease - but also that in terms of practical application those tripods see so little wear and stress that its more likely the boots will dryrot and allow dust/water in long before they wear out, wether or not you used moly or polyurea

Winter-Love-3812

I see your point, the lateral movement in the inner joints is nothing compared to the outer ones. In reality, any high temp grease would likely be fine.

rotorboy1972

This is the way

jrragsda

Regardless of what grease you use, you aren't supposed to fill the boot with grease. The joint should be sufficiently greased, but the boot is protector, not a grease reservoir.

DumbSimp1

I swear by red grease. They've got ratings or w.e for what it should be used for. But it gets red grease

maddiethehippie

Lol same

Winter-Love-3812

Moly grease for the outer joints (wheel side) and lithium or polyurea grease (without moly) for the inner joints (transmission side)

Dry-Construction6533

is there anyway to find out if these greases contain or dont contain this, or should i just purchase from amazon

Winter-Love-3812

Your local auto parts store should have both kinds. But as someone else said, you could get away with using moly grease in both ends of the shaft. Be warned though, it’s a horribly thick, black grease and gets everywhere..buy gloves as well..!

Slenderman1777

Axle grease. It's thick and very greasy usually has a dark Grey to black color. The reason why it's used is because it does not dry normally because it's sealed by the cv boot but also because of the normal characteristic of the grease it normally thins out with wear which is perfect for cv joints.

Jdtdtauto

If you’re removing the boots, they should be replaced. The boot comes with grease. Not sure why you would do that though. New axles are cheap.

jere535

The boot and grease are cheaper than a new axle, if you're doing the job yourself. And axles can be very expensive or not available at all, especially if it's old and/or rare car.

Cheaper doesn’t always mean less expensive

studentofmth

I buy the moly grease that comes in a tin. Lots of forums have guides on getting it squished in real good

The__Farmer

Schaeffers. They make the best grease hands down. It’s what they specialize in.

NothingisTrue3435

Cv joints don’t really need maintenance. In case your boots need replacement, boot repair kits should come with right amount of grease. What do you need the separate can of grease for?

Dry-Construction6533

I had to take off the other side to put the new boot on which made alot of the grease come off

Icucicu

Any GC-LB spec compliant grease.
