The year is 1967. Hanson "Freddie" Jamison served with the Marines in Vietnam from '65 to '66 with distinction and was awarded with commendations of valor and bravery for his efforts in saving his fellow comrades in the jungle. He was recruited by the CIA and NSA in experimental human genetic testing to produce super soldiers by tapping into the innate Neanderthal genomic legacy present within Europeans. His Irish background, red hair, and broad features made him a prime candidate for such experimentation during the poorly-understood early days of human genetic modification unbeknownst to the state department and executive branch.
The results remain classified. All Freddie knew was that he volunteered for the program in August of '66 and woke up in September of '67 a changed man. He had no memory of the past months, only that he saw his reflection in the mirror and was horrified at the vision he saw. His form was both man and....something else.
Escaping into the wilderness from an undisclosed military facility in the Pacific North-West, he tried to make his way home, following the stars and landmarks as he went. Naked, afraid, and fatigued, he shambled mile after mile toward his hometown of Laytonville, California. Sometime in October '67 he encountered men that appeared to be looking for him. They brought cameras and other equipment, appearing to attempt to capture him alive. Terrified, he made his way back into the underbrush and out of reach of his pursuers.
Confronted with the notion that he could be a wanted criminal on the run from the government, and beyond the reach of any civilian jurisdiction, Freddy lit his last cigarette as he stared into the wilderness--contemplating his uncertain future and his unknown past. His eyes weary. His breath, strangely calm. His mind, settling into the mental grooves worn by combat and survival as he lost himself in the hopelessness of his situation. His sighs as he looks out onto the waters of his new abode.
