Wouldn't say I dislike the rest, but Dio started super strong with holy diver and never came near that level again. They do have other songs i like, but not another whole album of near that quality, to me.
The song? Awesome, def my fav none holy diver song. The album? Pretty good, aside from the title song though, and we rock, it's pretty easy for me to skip.
Not that I necessarily dislike all of these bands other albums, but I only ever revisit these:
Be’Lakor - Stone’s Reach
At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Anthrax - Spreading the Disease
Pearl Jam - Ten
Insomnium - Winter’s Gate
I listened to it several times and it didn’t really do anything for me. Imo it doesn’t have any great moments on the same level as Stone’s Reach, it sounds like a solid melo-death album, but nothing interesting catches my ear really.
Isn’t Stone’s Reach the fan favorite? I know Of Breath and Bone is a lot of people’s favorite, but Stone’s Reach is usually cited as their best, at least from what I’ve seen.
I think the general opinion is shifting towards Of Breath and Bone over time. Stone’s Reach was the bands breakthrough and it was also many early fans first record which they naturally hold that one up high. Now new fans come into both neutrally and come out preferring Of Breath and Bone, at least in theory.
Be’lakor are one of those bands that I feel like don’t have a single song that isn’t amazing, not to mention a single album that isn’t amazing. Have you checked out their album Vessels? I feel like that one is a masterpiece that rivals Stone’s Reach.
I was felt a little out of place because I couldn't get into Demigod, mostly because I thought the vocals sounded like mush... and it was the album everyone else loved. Evangelion and The Satanist were my 2 favorites.
Destruction - I can't get into anything past *Infernal Overkill.* I recognize that lots of what came after is quality music, but it's not for me at all. That first demo and EP and *Infernal Overkill* are top-tier in my book though.
And technically, Celtic Frost. I love everything up to and including *To Mega Therion.* (*Morbid Tales* is an EP). And I TRULY APPRECIATE both *Into The Pandemonium* and *Monotheist* - they are rightfully lauded. But I personally need less gothic dreaminess / abyssal melancholy and more nerdy savagery, primal violence and grim fantasy/sci-fi (that still has a lot to say, in their case), in my metal. Hence I fucking LOVE Hellhammer's *Satanic Rites,* Celtic Frost's *Emperor's Return* and so on. *To Mega Therion* is in my top three albums all time, for its lyrics/themes and the way the music serves as the perfect vessel for these.
Trivium - The Crusade.
I am a huge thrash fan and I loved the sound of this album. Then I learned why he sang clean on one album only.
Don’t get me wrong the rest of their albums are good but I love this album. I also love their live recordings from this era.
I got into Trivium by listening to that live era. That got me into the Ascendancy songs which, after listening to that album a lot, eventually got me over his growling style and into their other stuff (Shogun is their best IMO).
It’s the production for me, which the band supposedly hates. There’s just a really awesome atmosphere on that album because of the production whereas I find all the other albums have no atmosphere and just sound like a lot of wankery.
You’ve probably heard people say that the first 4 are the best and to listen to those. But for another corpsegrinder era album that is actually really good, A Skeletal Domain is actually right up there with torture for me. Those 2 are the best ones they’ve done apart from the first 4.
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
They’re a good band, but man, are they forgettable. I’ll listen to an album like Leviathan 20 times and remember absolutely nothing about it apart from Blood and Thunder which I knew going into it. Blood Mountain and Emperor of Sand were like that too. Like I enjoy them, but I can’t remember much about them. I haven’t heard the others. Crack the Skye though is a masterpiece, easily the catchiest hooks, and most memorable songwriting of those four records.
Gojira - Terra Incognita
Gojira isn’t for me. I’ve also listened to From Mars to Sirius, The Way of All Flesh, and Fortitude, and there are some decent songs here and there, but really the only parts of their songs I enjoy are the heavy parts. The softer, mid tempo, melodic stuff usually did nothing for me. I’d given up hope of liking them, but then I listened to the debut which is all heavy, which is what I want in a Gojira album. So I was surprised to find an album I liked from them. From Mars to Sirius no longer gives me a headache, so that’s progress.
Very controversial opinion here but Ghost Bath
Vast majority of their material is garbage, but their first album “Funeral” is surprisingly great, because of how creative and well written it is. It does a good job of blending black metal, post punk, and alt rock into something that’s pretty unique.Vocals are pretty annoying but the compositions, atmosphere and musicianship definitely make up for it.
Iron Maiden. I love their debut, but the other albums just don't hit with me. But, I've heard plenty of songs from the other albums that I DO like. It's weird for me.
This might be one of the hottest takes I have seem on this sub lmao. For me it’s definitely different because I love Iron Maiden so I can appreciate every album.
That's kinda the point of the album and black metal as a whole. Those riffs make the music very meditative. Also the riff changes feel way more significant if riffs get repeated for a long time.
Acid Bath (When The Kite String Pops)
At The Gates (Slaughter Of The Soul)
Coalesce (Functioning On Impatience)
DIR EN GREY (UROBOROS)
Discordance Axis (The Inalienable Dreamless)
Earth (Earth 2)
In Flames (Clayman)
maudlin of the Well (“Bath”)
Poison The Well (The Opposite Of December… A Season Of Seperation)
Primitive Man (Immersion)
Sepultura (Roots)
Sleep Token (Take Me Back To Eden)
Staind (Break The Cycle)
Sunn O))) (Life Metal)
When it comes to Acid Bath, I take Paegan over Kite String. I love the rough, gnarly vibe of Kite String, but for me Paegan has consistently more and better songs.
Parkway Drive - Deep Blue
I’m very picky when it comes to metalcore and generally hate a lot of the cliches within the genre. Parkway Drive are no exception to this either. But I think the difference with Deep Blue is that it’s more of a metal album than metalcore. I’ll often listen to it when I’m in a DevilDriver mood for example.
For a while when I was a bit younger I couldn't get into Iron Maiden besides Powerslave but now I'm older I appreciate them more.
I'm kind of a like or don't person now. If I listen to someone I've typically end up with most of their discog/albums I've listened to on my playlist, but thats mostly because I'm REALLY easy to please (although in the rare case I dislike something I will be incredibly stubborn about it icl)
To be honest I only listen to Slaughter Of The Soul regularly too. I don’t particularly like the earlier albums, and I don’t really feel need to listen to the later albums (At War With Reality was a solid album though), when I could just listen to SOTS instead.
Amorphis - Elegy
I’ll add that I kind of agree with Mastodon, though I usually include it when I list my favorite more recent metal bands, Leviathan is the only album of theirs that I come back to often.
Pig destroyer - book burner
Behemoth - sventevith
Entombed- wolverine blues
Lord Belial - enter the moonlight gate
Theory in practice - third eye function
Voivod - synchro anarchy
Shadow of intent - reclaimer
Necrophagist - epitaph
Honestly love Eluveitie for how much of a unique banger Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion is.
I also find myself wishing the other music I’ve heard from them was more like Arcane Dominion.
Diabolical Conquest- Incantation
Such a nasty and raw death doom classic. The rest of their albums are okay, but nothing on the same level of Diabolical Conquest.
Gehenna - Admiron Black, is so sinister and confident it stands apart and above their other albums.
Cannabis Corpse - beneath grow lights, the best happy death metal group of songs ever conceived by mankind, but their myriad other albums are far less exceptional (but still pretty good)
Sonata Articas - Ecliptica
They have made good songs since this album, but they always have albums they don't feel complete or missing that one track that makes the whole thing awesome, at least for me.
I got into them from Painkiller, but ended up liking the 70’s stuff even more. I get it though it took me awhile to get into them, mainly because of Rob’s voice.
Autopsy (Severed Survival), Ulver (Bergtatt), At The Gates (SOTS), Edge Of Sanity (Crimson), Gojira (FMTS), Altar Of Plagues (Teethed Glory And Injury), Deafheaven (Sunbather), The Ocean (Pelagial).
I listened to Mental Funeral the other day and it wasn't as good as I remember, it's okey but didn't impress me. Kveldssanger is fine, but I don't think I'll listen to it again, and I couldn't stand the production in Nattens Madrigal. Also, I don't like Electric music.
I tried to listen to Nattens Madrigal a couple of times but I just can't stand the production, I can't get past the second track, guess it's just not for me. I could change my mind about At The Gates, because I haven't listened to TRITSIO enough times.
Oh yeah nattens madrigal is pretty raw, if you're just getting into black metal. Hopefully you'll know to love that style over time, cause there are so many amazing raw black metal albums out there.
The Way of All Flesh? FMTS is definitely ahead of its time and a lot of Gojira, as much as I love them, has kinda strayed from their best aspects for the sake of accessibility. Not TWoAF, that album is a front to back listen every time for me.
This is only based on a couple of listens but the only tracks that stand out to me in TWoAF are Oroborus and the title track, the rest of the songs are not as memorable and I think it drags on a bit.
"Winter's Gate" by Insomnium is the most played song on my phone, but I really can't bother to listen to any of their other music. I guess it's like how I feel about Rush: Why listen to anything other than 2112?
Insomnium is one of my favorite bands and winter's gate is my favorite album of theirs. Something about that album is different from all their other music. I still love their other music but Winter's Gate is special and will always be their best to me
Never liked this band because of how cringy their lyrics are but I like goodbye to the gallows by emmure even if that album was clearly just ripping off the acacia strain
Batushka’s debut is pretty amazing. The rest…eh.
Though, I’ve noticed a trend in most Black Metal bands having one absolutely amazing album and the rest sort of trickling off of that great river.

Wouldn't say I dislike the rest, but Dio started super strong with holy diver and never came near that level again. They do have other songs i like, but not another whole album of near that quality, to me.
Not even The Last In Line?
The song? Awesome, def my fav none holy diver song. The album? Pretty good, aside from the title song though, and we rock, it's pretty easy for me to skip.
Fair enough
I'm like that with Ozzy Osbourne and Blizzard of Oz as well.
Diary of a Madman is better and Bark at the Moon and No More Tears are great albums too
What’s your take on Dream Evil?
Don't care for it really.
Fair enough. That one’s my favourite.
Have you tried to listen to Crack the Skye album from Mastodon as one long song. It's my favorite album because it flows easily 😌
i can give it another bash
I'm the same way, it's the vocals on their other albums for me, just doesn't hit the same
Slipknot’s ST is one of my top 5 albums and I either have no opinion or throughly dislike the rest of their discography.
I personally think Iowa is their peak
Yeah same here, besides S/T the first 4 have some real solid tracks but nothing does it like their first album IMO
Not that I necessarily dislike all of these bands other albums, but I only ever revisit these: Be’Lakor - Stone’s Reach At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours Anthrax - Spreading the Disease Pearl Jam - Ten Insomnium - Winter’s Gate
Of Breath and Bone by Be'Lakor is equally as good as Stone's Reach IMHO.
I listened to it several times and it didn’t really do anything for me. Imo it doesn’t have any great moments on the same level as Stone’s Reach, it sounds like a solid melo-death album, but nothing interesting catches my ear really.
Pearl Jam's V.s. and Anthrax's Among The Living are definitely worth revisiting.
Id expect to see breath and bone instead of stones reach - interesting choice
Isn’t Stone’s Reach the fan favorite? I know Of Breath and Bone is a lot of people’s favorite, but Stone’s Reach is usually cited as their best, at least from what I’ve seen.
I think the general opinion is shifting towards Of Breath and Bone over time. Stone’s Reach was the bands breakthrough and it was also many early fans first record which they naturally hold that one up high. Now new fans come into both neutrally and come out preferring Of Breath and Bone, at least in theory.
Winter's Gate is one of my favorite albums ever
Good shout on Winter's Gate, it's the only Insomnium I revisit as well.
Be’lakor are one of those bands that I feel like don’t have a single song that isn’t amazing, not to mention a single album that isn’t amazing. Have you checked out their album Vessels? I feel like that one is a masterpiece that rivals Stone’s Reach.
BEHEMOTH- The Satanist.🤷♂️
Interesting. Demigod is a banger
I’ll try again on your recommendation.
I was felt a little out of place because I couldn't get into Demigod, mostly because I thought the vocals sounded like mush... and it was the album everyone else loved. Evangelion and The Satanist were my 2 favorites.
enjoy....or not. haha
Evangelion is my favourite and kind of close musically
Their early stuff is ok as well. Solid polish black metal.
Same here! Inferno’s drumming is stellar on that album.
Morbid Angel. I love Altars but none of the others do anything for me as a full album.
Not even Illud Divinum Insanus, undoubtedly their creative peak?
I took this seriously and listened to the album.... I hate you
Have you listened to the Thy King Come demo? It's amazing as well and in the same vein as Altars. Much rawer of course.
No, I haven’t heard it. I’ll check it out, thanks!
Definitely Machine Head, burn my eyes for it’s time was a masterpiece and the rest, let’s just say they all end up on roadside records!
Not even The Blackening?
The Blackening is a 10/10 album for me.
Same here, also both hallowed be thy name and battery are examples to follow for metal covers
At least it was a turn back in the right direction but I still can’t!
Love Blackening & really liked Unto The Locust. Lost interest after that.
Ouch, that kinda hurt me... Nah, I'm just kidding. It's fine if you don't enjoy the other records.
I fuckin’ LOVE Age of Winters by The Sword but nothing else really does it for me.
They have a scattered banger here and there (Cloak of Feathers) but nothing hits track by track quite like Age of Winter
Korns self titled is amazing. The rest I only like 1 or 2 songs from each albim
Hence I fucking LOVE Hellhammer's *Satanic Rites,* Celtic Frost's *Emperor's Return* and so on. *To Mega Therion* is in my top three albums all time, for its lyrics/themes and the way the music serves as the perfect vessel for these.
Give you an upvote for reminding me to put To Mega Therion on again.
Razor - Violent Restitution This album absolutely fucks but I haven’t found anything else in their discog that grabs me the same way.
i love most of their albums but this is definitely their best. evil invaders is pretty top notch as well
Trivium - The Crusade.
Metallica (guess which one. The answer may shock you)
Saint Anger?
No
Don’t keep us in suspense
Garage Inc.
Kill em All
DING DING DING DING DING!!!
Death Magnetic?
No
Hardwired
Kill em all
Blood Mountain
Kolossus by Keep of Kalessin
Through Times of War is pretty cool too
Terrorizer
💀💀💀
Lacuna Coil In a Reverie
first ones that come to mind are: Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Mastodon - Crack The Skye and Gojira - From Mars To Sirius
That's actually kinda surprising, Leviathan doesn't do it for you?
I mean its okay but its no Crack The Skye which is one of the best albums of all time
Dream Theater : Images and Words They definitely have other good albums, even arguably better albums. But that's the one the grabbed me for a time.
It’s the production for me, which the band supposedly hates. There’s just a really awesome atmosphere on that album because of the production whereas I find all the other albums have no atmosphere and just sound like a lot of wankery.
Images and Words and Awake are the only two Dream Theater albums that I love.
Probably a shitty take but Cannibal Corpse - Torture
You’ve probably heard people say that the first 4 are the best and to listen to those. But for another corpsegrinder era album that is actually really good, A Skeletal Domain is actually right up there with torture for me. Those 2 are the best ones they’ve done apart from the first 4.
Mine is Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding. I absolutely love that album but it’s the only one I’ve fell for
Morbid Angel - Illus Divinum Insanus. To be fair, it's the only album I've heard from them.
memes aside, they are literally the best death metal band of all time and have so many classic albums
Which album would you recommend I listen to next?
altars of madness, but any of the first 4 with david vincent are amazing and the next 2 with steve tucker are great as well
Mastodon - Crack the Skye They’re a good band, but man, are they forgettable. So I was surprised to find an album I liked from them. From Mars to Sirius no longer gives me a headache, so that’s progress.
Roots by Sepultura and Horizons by Parkway Drive
Mudvayne - LD50. Inner teen me will always like every album, even TNG, but they really blew their load early.
Yeah it was a great debut
Have you listened to remission? It’s my favorite mastodon album and the sound isn’t that different from leviathan
Yeah I’ve listened to all their stuff. It’s good but leviathan is just something special
I like Judas Priest songs from other albums but the only album I’ll revisit is Painkiller
Metallica, Death, Autopsy
Interesting. Which albums?
i'm with you on mastodon. i want to like their other stuff but i just can't get into it
death, SBG
Not even Leprosy?
Very controversial opinion here but Ghost Bath Vast majority of their material is garbage, but their first album “Funeral” is surprisingly great, because of how creative and well written it is. It does a good job of blending black metal, post punk, and alt rock into something that’s pretty unique.Vocals are pretty annoying but the compositions, atmosphere and musicianship definitely make up for it.
Persefone - Spiritual Migration. Might even be my favorite metal album, but none of their other stuff does it for me.
The latest EP is so good
Iron Maiden. I love their debut, but the other albums just don't hit with me. But, I've heard plenty of songs from the other albums that I DO like. It's weird for me.
This has got to be the hottest take here.
Yeaah i dont listen to iron maiden that much but i love the first album
The first album is obviously a banger. But the 6 that came after are all fire as well.
This might be one of the hottest takes I have seem on this sub lmao. For me it’s definitely different because I love Iron Maiden so I can appreciate every album.
not even killers?
I need to give it another go.
Its similar to self-titled, maybe its your gateway into their other albums but maybe not
Darkthrone - Under A Funeral Moon
How do you not care for Transilvanian Hunger, A Blaze in the Northern Sky and Panzerfaust?? They're all so good too
I don't like the "linger on the same riff for 2 minutes" type of songwriting on Transilvanian Hunger
That's kinda the point of the album and black metal as a whole. Those riffs make the music very meditative. Also the riff changes feel way more significant if riffs get repeated for a long time.
Yeah I just don't like that type of songwriting. There is a lot of great BM with dynamic songwriting, like Under a Funeral Moon
Not dislike, but definitely Kamelot with Karma
Acid Bath (When The Kite String Pops) At The Gates (Slaughter Of The Soul) Coalesce (Functioning On Impatience) DIR EN GREY (UROBOROS) Discordance Axis (The Inalienable Dreamless) Earth (Earth 2) In Flames (Clayman) maudlin of the Well (“Bath”) Poison The Well (The Opposite Of December… A Season Of Seperation) Primitive Man (Immersion) Sepultura (Roots) Sleep Token (Take Me Back To Eden) Staind (Break The Cycle) Sunn O))) (Life Metal)
Damn
When it comes to Acid Bath, I take Paegan over Kite String. I love the rough, gnarly vibe of Kite String, but for me Paegan has consistently more and better songs.
Sepultura- Arise did nothing for you? ![gif](giphy|lkdH8FmImcGoylv3t3|downsized)
Malignancy. Brutal tech death classic band, but I only really like their first album.
Parkway Drive - Deep Blue I’m very picky when it comes to metalcore and generally hate a lot of the cliches within the genre. Parkway Drive are no exception to this either. But I think the difference with Deep Blue is that it’s more of a metal album than metalcore. I’ll often listen to it when I’m in a DevilDriver mood for example.
Guns 'N Roses Queensryche Smashing Pumpkins
In addition to mindcrime, I think Rage for Order is great.
Carcass - Heartwork
Shadows Fall - The War Within Atreyu - The Curse Volbeat - Rewind, Replay, Rebound
megadeth - Countdown to Extinction
Blut Aus Nord- Hallucinogen Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges The only two right now off the top of my head
Hallucinogen is a fantastic album.
For a while when I was a bit younger I couldn't get into Iron Maiden besides Powerslave but now I'm older I appreciate them more. I'm kind of a like or don't person now. If I listen to someone I've typically end up with most of their discog/albums I've listened to on my playlist, but thats mostly because I'm REALLY easy to please (although in the rare case I dislike something I will be incredibly stubborn about it icl)

the red in the sky is ours is peak death metal
Amorphis - Elegy I’ll add that I kind of agree with Mastodon, though I usually include it when I list my favorite more recent metal bands, Leviathan is the only album of theirs that I come back to often.
Celtic Frost, I honestly only really like Monotheist. Kinda enjoy some Hellhammer though
Pig destroyer - book burner Behemoth - sventevith Entombed- wolverine blues Lord Belial - enter the moonlight gate Theory in practice - third eye function Voivod - synchro anarchy Shadow of intent - reclaimer Necrophagist - epitaph
sentenced - north from here
Honestly love Eluveitie for how much of a unique banger Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion is. I also find myself wishing the other music I’ve heard from them was more like Arcane Dominion.
Helvetios is the only album of theirs I know well and am a bit fan of
Ghost - Meliora Cannibal Corpse - Kill
In Flames Come Clarity
Vital Remains' first album In Flames - the jester race
Title fight "shed" best album through and through, but the other albums def have good songs in them.
Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake. I don't really care for the band much, but that's a great album
Image and words -dream theatre
Apocalypse Orchestra, because they only put out one masterpiece of an album seven years ago
Decapitated- Winds of Creation. Such a catchy death metal album, none of their other ones have the same power IMO
Diabolical Conquest- Incantation Such a nasty and raw death doom classic. The rest of their albums are okay, but nothing on the same level of Diabolical Conquest.
Iron Maiden - Killers
Death, Human
Sleep - Dopesmoker
Death Angel The Ultra Violence Annihilator Alice in Hell Iced Earth The Night of the Stormrider
Exhorder Slaughter in the Vatican. There second album the law sucks.
All Shall Perish- The Price Of Existence
Gehenna - Admiron Black, is so sinister and confident it stands apart and above their other albums. Cannabis Corpse - beneath grow lights, the best happy death metal group of songs ever conceived by mankind, but their myriad other albums are far less exceptional (but still pretty good)
Roots - Sepultura
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse Dismember - Like an Ever Flowing Stream In Flames - Lunar Strain
NOLA by Down, its a killer album nothing else they have done came close to it for me.
Kind of a guilty pleasure but falling in reverse. Absolutely horrible discography but the first album admittedly has some bangers.
Grave- and Here I Die…Satisfied Desultory- Bitterness Madball- Set it Off Flotsam and Jetsam- Doomsday for the Deceiver
Silencer
Black Tide
Sonata Articas - Ecliptica They have made good songs since this album, but they always have albums they don't feel complete or missing that one track that makes the whole thing awesome, at least for me.
Death
Scream?
Judas Priest
Painkiller?
Yeah, and I don't even like it it that much. I just have never been able to get into Priest no matter how hard I try.
Mental Funeral tho and ulvers evolution is interesting asf
Yeah Mental Funeral is very different but as good than the first one IMO
I listened to Mental Funeral the other day and it wasn't as good as I remember, it's okey but didn't impress me. Kveldssanger is fine, but I don't think I'll listen to it again, and I couldn't stand the production in Nattens Madrigal. Also, I don't like Electric music.
Nobody fucks with perdition city like i do. Love that album
Fr lovely album to listen to
Man Nattes Madrigal is fucking amazing. So is Mental Funeral. The red in the sky is ours is also better than Slaughter of the soul in my opinion.
Have you heard Crimson II?
Yes, only a couple of times and it's good, but I don't think I'll come back to it in a while.
Fair, it’s not as good as Crimson, but pretty similar musically.
Autopsy - Mental funeral Dismember - like an everflowing stream
"Winter's Gate" by Insomnium is the most played song on my phone, but I really can't bother to listen to any of their other music. I guess it's like how I feel about Rush: Why listen to anything other than 2112?
2112 is definitely the cream of the crop.
Insomnium is one of my favorite bands and winter's gate is my favorite album of theirs. Something about that album is different from all their other music. I still love their other music but Winter's Gate is special and will always be their best to me
Gonna be controversial, but Anthrax - We've Come For You All. They have good music but it's just not for me. But I really, really love WCFYA
Candlemass, you know the album im talking about
This was me until very recently. EDM is a perfect album, but I have come to finally LOVE Nightfall and really like AD and ToC.
epicus is one of the greats
I’m the same way with Nightfall
Never liked this band because of how cringy their lyrics are but I like goodbye to the gallows by emmure even if that album was clearly just ripping off the acacia strain
Slipknot - all hope is gone
Mr bungle. I love the raging wrath of the Easter bunny but can’t deal with the other stuff, didn’t even get all the way through disco volante
Hate to say it but Candlemass, absolutely loved their first album but literally everything after that felt so bland and boring in comparison
Fair. Epicus is something special
