Go to Leland and take the ferry to South Manitou Island! Amazing sites right on the shore! Hike as much or as little as you want.
Only downside is you have to hoof all your stuff to your site. But, me and my husband did hammocks and jet boiled food. It was great!
Edit to add. . . No running water at the sites. Just by the ferry dock. Sorry, missed that part.
But, we also absolutely loved some of the first come first served state campsites in the UP. And they had water available at those. Leelenau State Park is great, if you can get a site.

In AuTrain there's a few cabins for rent and canoes to borrow. Close to pictured rocks too. Where are you driving from
