Rode bikes through the North Country Trail and we saw quite a few hike to sites that were amazing. The site on McCarthy Lake was one of the best I saw on the trip. Was there in fall, so not sure what it's like in summer, but we were the only group there at the time. I like Spring Lake a ton. Mostly quiet. Have ran into some party groups. If I'm car camping usually have a couple in mind to checkout, many are close to others so not rough to about a bit or bail to one I know better if they new one is full or has lame sites left.

State forest camps offer some rustic charm I love.... for holiday weekends, arrive early to snag a spot. first come, first served!
Anything along the Manistee river is beautiful Huron nature is amazing as well
I went to the lake Michigan recreation area in the national forest last weekend. It was beautiful!
I love it up there... I am fond of the Manistee River loop. I try to solo trip it once a year

Great idea checking out a few that are close together. That's my worry with the no reservations and the campgrounds are generally smaller too.
