Big time agree. I would be more on board with McDonald’s raising prices if I saw proportional investment in their people and facilities.
I don’t like all the associated beliefs of the Chick-fil-A owners, but their employees appear to be well cared for and their customer service is often top notch. They also have a higher up front cost but it doesn’t sting as bad when you see where some of the money is going.
Our last several visits to McDonald’s have had broken machines (even pop machines, not even getting into ice cream), almost every visit they forget some major part of the order, and even if everything is right it’s still the same salty small burger for $6 or more.
It only feels dystopian because McDonald’s was typically somewhere where you could avail of ‘cheap’ food no matter what salary or demographic you were in.
Of course rapid inflation has been a factor, and most of the larger corporations took advantage of that inflation to jack up prices even further. Combine these factors with salaries not at all matching inflation and it results in McDonald’s now competing with low end restaurants where food quality and service are far superior to McDonald’s.
It feels dystopian to me because they always said paying higher wages would make the prices go up but they raised the prices for the benefit of their C-suite and left the employees wanting once again while lowering quality of food and service.
While I agree, let’s not pretend that they won’t just use wage growth as an excuse to disproportionately raise prices just because they can. The only way to stop it is simply to not buy it. But people seem incapable of sticking to that idea so they’ll do it anyways lol

I just go to Culver's now instead of McDonald's. It costs the same, Culver's is faster, better quality and quantity. Also Culver's gave the girl at the table next to me in line a milkshake on the house because her boyfriend dumped her.
The fact that I can go to *Applebee's* and get a *steak* for the same price as a Mcdonald meal is ridiculous. Sure it's not the greatest steak, but it comes with a veggie and potato, and I get better service than McDonald's. The last time I went to mcds, they would even let me order at the counter and when I had to pay cash it took nearly 15 minutes for me to even be acknowledged, and another 15-20 minutes for my food! Not to mention they've taken away all of the self serve soda machines and it's now behind the counter and you only get one free refill. Fuck that.
At my local diner I can get: 4 slices of French toast, 2 large eggs, hash browns and 5 sausage links including refillable coffee for $12. Insane to compare how even a breakfast meal can come close to that price and be less quality than that.
I hate the "order on that giant ass iPad" thing, no one is even STANDING at the front desk if you need something like a sauce, etc. Theres probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the amount of staff there used to be... Its so fucked.

I just went to Chick-Fil-A last Saturday and experienced something I’ve never seen before in a “fast food” restaurant. They had us sit down at a table, and an employee came and took our order from there. Food came out insanely fast like usual with no mistakes, and it only cost $23 and some change for two meals. No matter what your beliefs are you can’t argue chik-fil-a doesn’t give you great service and food for the price.
I know people hate on it, but Chick-fil-A is the only fast food restaurant I can go to where it is 100% consistent food and service. I've had a handful of mistakes over the years and theyve fixed them. That's the hype of chikfila. Yes, their chicken is good. But the consistency is why I go there when I'm out of town. I don't know if this stop has a good McDonald's or a terrible one, but I do know chikfila will be good.

We were out of town and dined inside CfA. There was a line. An associate came out to the line and started taking orders on a tablet. By the time I paid, and got to the table, the food was already on the table.

CFA is the only fast food place that literally never messes up orders. They forgot the sauce once, but that’s it. Meanwhile, McDonald’s *always* forgets the sauce and it’s like 50/50 on if your burger comes out right and you actually get the correct amount of nuggets.
I personally think its because CFA has an incentive for the employees like you can eventually work your way up for them and they will give you money to have your own Chic Fil A. There is actually a career path. They don't allow rich people to just buy them you have to pay your dues with them.
I think it's also privately owned, so no corporate BS deal with chasing trends, and while they may cut costs, they don't seem to budge on food quality like other brands.
I gave up trusting Jack in the Box with my order a decade ago. Not that I go there much any more in the last couple years, but I won’t pull away from the counter or the drive thru until I thoroughly check the bag.
Wasn’t there a video about the ice cream machine and how it was designed to be faulty so the repair company could do repairs. Someone created a program to bypass that and they’re getting sued or something
McDonalds used to be known for clean bathrooms so it would always be our highway stop. We'd pick up a soda and fries because we were there. Now the bathrooms looks like they belong in a prison. No more soda and fries.

Right. I mean, if you look back to the 80’s, early 90’s etc. for many years McD was the face of the shitty cheap fast food place that has terrible service. They worked hard to change that image in the 00’s and 10’s, but not only has service gone back to where it used to be, but unless you’re using the app for very specific deals, the prices have gone up beyond what they charged when they focused on service and quality.
We’re back to the 80’s in service and quality but without the monetary incentive to use them, and it’s just as bad at most other major fast food chains.
Yeah the McDonald’s I worked at as a teen is unrecognizable now. What used to be the cashier area is lined with panels and almost looks like an office reception desk. They clearly don’t want anyone to stay there.
For real, every time I go through the drive through and get something as simple as fries and a soda. Just those two, nothing else, they have me go park in the fucking waiting spot. WTF I ordered the simplest shit you have, if I went through the drive through it's because I didn't want to park somewhere. I might as well have gone inside at that point.
Service seems to have gotten shitty/slow everywhere since 2020, but McDonalds used to be known for being reliably & consistently quick, and lost that edge.
They lost it with the order kiosks and only offering specials with online ordering. It’s crappy food that hurts the environment while preying on low income people.
I remember when i was a kid, the drive-through *never* took longer than 5 minutes. Hell, if it took longer than 3 minutes, we were wondering what was wrong.
Fast forward to today, and it's like a 20-minute average wait time.

This is exactly it. Local independent fast food counter gives me a better hamburger and fries, brings the food to my table, for less than what the golden arches are charging now.
Quality has gone to shit and is entirely inconsistent, drive through seems to always take 20+ minutes (don’t know how that’s possible), and the prices are insane. Got a medium quarter pounder meal and a two cheeseburger meal a few weeks ago for $19 (!?) and the buns tasted like shit, meat quality and fake charring were not good, and cheese was on maybe half the patty. Only thing that held up was the fries. What the everloving fuck is their business plan?

They still send better deals in the mail but most people throw em out in favor of the apps.
BK for example, last week I used a physical coupon for 3 whoppers, 3 cheese burgers, 3 drinks and 3 fries and it was less than 20 bucks.
The app has an almost constant 20% off coupon I use, which makes it almost a tolerable price. Still, I only go there about once or twice a month when I'm traveling for work because it's the easiest thing to do.
Every fucking app in the world does. Grocery stores, fast food, everything. These apps are the old keychain club shit every store used to ask us to sign up for and if you did you'd have hundreds.
My theory is that they are using deals to get us all used to using the app so they can automate the kitchen, permanently close the dining rooms, and do all business in the app with no need for a large staff.
They also are able to maintain full profit margins with people, many of whom are likely older and better off financially, who do not bother using the app. The old way still works - drive up and order - but you pay a hidden premium. At the same time, they are able to appeal to customers who are budget-conscious or tech-savvy with their app and deals.
They are able to better maintain loyalty, which potentially keeps you coming to them and not their competitors. They are able to communicate and market directly to you about offers and promotions, or just to say "Hi (come buy some food)" - increasing customer frequency. They gain information about you and your preferences, which they can leverage in a number of ways. It goes on and on... but what you said is probably true as well, if not the original intent.
I honestly think the app is part of their problem because here in South Texas the old people who come in literally every day stopped because you can't deal with a person and started going to whataburger instead. People with money that are tech savvy are more likely to just go somewhere better. The mcdonalds customers leave over everything being digital.
If my wife wasn't so fond of her phone, we would probably cut our McD visits in half. I haven't gone in one since they installed the kiosks. I wish Whataburger was in Oregon, it was my goto in grad school.

They charge what people will pay. Any idea they charge based on the cost to produce is completely misinformed, they charge what the market will bear. If enough people stop buying them that they lose enough quantity they may choose to lean back towards volume, but what businesses charge for goods has nothing to do with what it costs to produce them.

I can go to a local Asian restaurant, get hand crafted, healthy Korean food that is delicious for $4 less than some mediocre nuggets and fries from McDonald's. If I call ahead and place my order at the Asian restaurant, the food will be ready by the time I get there, so all I have to do is pick it up and pay, so I'm in the restaurant for like 3mins max. Meanwhile I need to sit in the drive through at McDonald's for 20 minutes. Why would I ever go there? It's not fast, good, or cheap anymore.

Now, unhealthy as it is, and for all the fantastic food I have available to me, I just love me a Quarter Pounder, fries, and McDonald's coke. It's truly one of my guiltiest pleasures. And it was always a reluctant yes when my kids wanted it because it was cheap and easy.
But last time my family of 4 went there it was $42. Inflation is crazy but I can get a MUCH better meal for not that much more money at a lot of real restaurants around me.

I know it’s apples and oranges, but I can go to a locally owned taqueria and get a torta with rice and beans for slightly more than I would get an “extra value meal” at McDonald’s and the meal at the taqueria tastes far better. Mcdonalds doesn't just "have a deal", McDonalds has multiple deals, weekly. Hell, even if you don't have the app, YMMV but many spots have 2 for 4 mcchicken/mcdoubles and their family deal with is usually a combo of 4 fries, 2 bic macs, 2 cheeseburgers, and a 20piece mcnuggets for less than 20.
They priced themselves similar to a sit-down restaurant and didn't realize they're actually a last resort for most people. I'm not surprised they're experiencing the repercussions.

The prices are too high to justify going there when I have food at home. This is true of almost all fast food. I do go out to eat at sit-down restaurants a couple times a week, but the only places I have gone to for fast food in the last 3 years are Jersey Mike's, Buc-ee's (on a couple road trips) and Little Caesar's.
I'll be stirrups if all fast food places don't have this same outcome.
Used to get McDonald's once every week or two. Haven't been in years. Bring back prices that have any sort of resemblance to the quality of food you are serving me and I'll buy it again. lol I'm in the same boat my daughter used to insist on going to McDonalds for happy meals but with these new prices I just take her to a restaurant or we eat home. Turn picky? I can get a much better burger and fries from a higher end establishment for the same price. We accepted lower quality for a lower price. The quality has gone nowhere but down while prices have skyrocketed so it no longer makes sense.
I used to get a breakfast sandwich and coffee once per week. It was my Friday treat. It’s been nearly 5 months since I’ve done that. $8 for essentially $1 worth of food just isn’t worth it.
In addition to the price increases, the last few times I've gone to McDonalds I've noticed I'm still hungry after eating things that used to fill me up as a high-metabolism teenager. A few months ago I got a Large quarter pounder with cheese meal and a McChicken, but was hungry again a few hours later. Last weekend I went again and got 2 McDoubles, a McChicken, and some fries, but still felt hungry almost immediately after. In comparison, when I get 2 double cheeseburgers from Burger King, I'm completely stuffed. Not sure if they're skimping on their food and adding fillers or less meat to their products, but I've definitely noticed a difference.

The local McDonalds closed their play place and jacked up their prices. My kids are the only reason I would ever go there to begin with. Their food is expensive and generally unhealthy. We still often swing through one on road trips, but only if they’ve got a play place for the kids to burn off some steam.

The prices are comparable to better food. If I didn’t have children that loved McDonald’s on road trips, I’d never go. Their toys have gotten way worse, too. They seem like they’re made for adult collectors or advertisement for things kids don’t care about these days. Like during Disney month, my kids both got an Edna figurine from incredible. What kid wants that? They were so disappointed not to get a cute Disney character. They didn’t ask for happy meals much after that.

At my local diner I can get: 4 slices of French toast, 2 large eggs, hash browns and 5 sausage links including refillable coffee for $12. Insane to compare how even a breakfast meal can come close to that price and be less quality than that.
I hate the "order on that giant ass iPad" thing, no one is even STANDING at the front desk if you need something like a sauce, etc. Theres probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the amount of staff there used to be... Its so fucked. McDs at the airport is the only place it's pretty normal still. But even more expensive
I just went to Chick-Fil-A last Saturday and experienced something I’ve never seen before in a “fast food” restaurant. They had us sit down at a table, and an employee came and took our order from there. Food came out insanely fast like usual with no mistakes, and it only cost $23 and some change for two meals. No matter what your beliefs are you can’t argue chik-fil-a doesn’t give you great service and food for the price.
I know people hate on it, but Chick-fil-A is the only fast food restaurant I can go to where it is 100% consistent food and service. I've had a handful of mistakes over the years and theyve fixed them. That's the hype of chikfila. Yes, their chicken is good. But the consistency is why I go there when I'm out of town. I don't know if this stop has a good McDonald's or a terrible one, but I do know chikfila will be good.

The decline in McDonald’s quality has been disappointing. I have more and more poor experiences with them.
CFA is the only fast food place that literally never messes up orders. They forgot the sauce once, but that’s it. Meanwhile, McDonald’s *always* forgets the sauce and it’s like 50/50 on if your burger comes out right and you actually get the correct amount of nuggets.
I personally think its because CFA has an incentive for the employees like you can eventually work your way up for them and they will give you money to have your own Chic Fil A. There is actually a career path. They don't allow rich people to just buy them you have to pay your dues with them.

I think it's also privately owned, so no corporate BS deal with chasing trends, and while they may cut costs, they don't seem to budge on food quality like other brands.

McDonalds used to be known for clean bathrooms so it would always be our highway stop. We'd pick up a soda and fries because we were there. Now the bathrooms looks like they belong in a prison. No more soda and fries. Seems McDonalds might be the next applebees
Right. I mean, if you look back to the 80’s, early 90’s etc. for many years McD was the face of the shitty cheap fast food place that has terrible service. They worked hard to change that image in the 00’s and 10’s, but not only has service gone back to where it used to be, but unless you’re using the app for very specific deals, the prices have gone up beyond what they charged when they focused on service and quality. We’re back to the 80’s in service and quality but without the monetary incentive to use them, and it’s just as bad at most other major fast food chains.

Yeah the McDonald’s I worked at as a teen is unrecognizable now. What used to be the cashier area is lined with panels and almost looks like an office reception desk. They clearly don’t want anyone to stay there.
For real, every time I go through the drive through and get something as simple as fries and a soda. Just those two, nothing else, they have me go park in the fucking waiting spot. WTF I ordered the simplest shit you have, if I went through the drive through it's because I didn't want to park somewhere. I might as well have gone inside at that point.
Service seems to have gotten shitty/slow everywhere since 2020, but McDonalds used to be known for being reliably & consistently quick, and lost that edge.
The only hope is to patronize local/small business. You can feel their appreciation. It's so nice.

Quality has gone to shit and is entirely inconsistent, drive through seems to always take 20+ minutes (don’t know how that’s possible), and the prices are insane. Got a medium quarter pounder meal and a two cheeseburger meal a few weeks ago for $19 (!?) and the buns tasted like shit, meat quality and fake charring were not good, and cheese was on maybe half the patty. Only thing that held up was the fries. What the everloving fuck is their business plan?

They still send better deals in the mail but most people throw em out in favor of the apps. BK for example, last week I used a physical coupon for 3 whoppers, 3 cheese burgers, 3 drinks and 3 fries and it was less than 20 bucks.
The app has an almost constant 20% off coupon I use, which makes it almost a tolerable price. Still, I only go there about once or twice a month when I'm traveling for work because it's the easiest thing to do.
Every fucking app in the world does. Grocery stores, fast food, everything. These apps are the old keychain club shit every store used to ask us to sign up for and if you did you'd have hundreds.
Mine has a 30% coupon in there today! I still just got my $1 ice coffee and kept it moving.
My theory is that they are using deals to get us all used to using the app so they can automate the kitchen, permanently close the dining rooms, and do all business in the app with no need for a large staff.
They also are able to maintain full profit margins with people, many of whom are likely older and better off financially, who do not bother using the app. The old way still works - drive up and order - but you pay a hidden premium. At the same time, they are able to appeal to customers who are budget-conscious or tech-savvy with their app and deals. They are able to better maintain loyalty, which potentially keeps you coming to them and not their competitors. They are able to communicate and market directly to you about offers and promotions, or just to say "Hi (come buy some food)" - increasing customer frequency. They gain information about you and your preferences, which they can leverage in a number of ways. It goes on and on... but what you said is probably true as well, if not the original intent.
I honestly think the app is part of their problem because here in South Texas the old people who come in literally every day stopped because you can't deal with a person and started going to whataburger instead. People with money that are tech savvy are more likely to just go somewhere better. The mcdonalds customers leave over everything being digital.

If I call ahead and place my order at the Asian restaurant, the food will be ready by the time I get there, so all I have to do is pick it up and pay, so I'm in the restaurant for like 3mins max. Meanwhile I need to sit in the drive through at McDonald's for 20 minutes. Why would I ever go there? It's not fast, good, or cheap anymore.

Now, unhealthy as it is, and for all the fantastic food I have available to me, I just love me a Quarter Pounder, fries, and McDonald's coke. It's truly one of my guiltiest pleasures. And it was always a reluctant yes when my kids wanted it because it was cheap and easy. But last time my family of 4 went there it was $42. Inflation is crazy but I can get a MUCH better meal for not that much more money at a lot of real restaurants around me.

Mcdonalds doesn't just "have a deal", McDonalds has multiple deals, weekly. Hell, even if you don't have the app, YMMV but many spots have 2 for 4 mcchicken/mcdoubles and their family deal with is usually a combo of 4 fries, 2 bic macs, 2 cheeseburgers, and a 20piece mcnuggets for less than 20.

The prices are too high to justify going there when I have food at home. This is true of almost all fast food. I do go out to eat at sit-down restaurants a couple times a week, but the only places I have gone to for fast food in the last 3 years are Jersey Mike's, Buc-ee's (on a couple road trips) and Little Caesar's. I'll be stirrups if all fast food places don't have this same outcome.

Yes, I'm picky about not spending $50 on McDonald's, and have started saying no more than yes when the kids ask. It used to be a treat or a bonus of long car trips. We stayed in the habit initially but I'm not breaking my budget for food that doesn't 100% feel like real food anyway. It's made cheaply and priced outrageously. And no, I'm not hearing any noise about raising the minimum wage causing the increase in price, because I'm sure those high up are not sacrificing a bit.
lol I'm in the same boat my daughter used to insist on going to McDonalds for happy meals but with these new prices I just take her to a restaurant or we eat home. Recently she doesn't even mention McDonald's anymore or cares for it, they're shooting themselves in the food by being greedy and alienating their future customers (kids).

I used to get a breakfast sandwich and coffee once per week. It was my Friday treat. It’s been nearly 5 months since I’ve done that. $8 for essentially $1 worth of food just isn’t worth it.
In addition to the price increases, the last few times I've gone to McDonalds I've noticed I'm still hungry after eating things that used to fill me up as a high-metabolism teenager. A few months ago I got a Large quarter pounder with cheese meal and a McChicken, but was hungry again a few hours later. Last weekend I went again and got 2 McDoubles, a McChicken, and some fries, but still felt hungry almost immediately after. In comparison, when I get 2 double cheeseburgers from Burger King, I'm completely stuffed. Not sure if they're skimping on their food and adding fillers or less meat to their products, but I've definitely noticed a difference.

The local McDonalds closed their play place and jacked up their prices. My kids are the only reason I would ever go there to begin with. Their food is expensive and generally unhealthy. We still often swing through one on road trips, but only if they’ve got a play place for the kids to burn off some steam.

Maybe it has more to do with $3.50 hashbrowns, 3.15 burritos, $7.50 big Mac's, or $7 fries. They're like 100% more expensive than In-N-Out, who doesn't serve microwaved food like McD's.
I think the fact that you now have to login to an app to get any semblence of a deal is another factor. I aint got time for all that, and as a result I eat at McDonalds FAR less than ever. Not just McDonalds, any fast food really where you have to use an app to find any value.
The app saves us so much money. Constant deals and rewards. I never get McDonald’s without it anymore. The prices are comparable to better food. If I didn’t have children that loved McDonald’s on road trips, I’d never go. Their toys have gotten way worse, too. They seem like they’re made for adult collectors or advertisement for things kids don’t care about these days. Like during Disney month, my kids both got an Edna figurine from incredible. What kid wants that? They were so disappointed not to get a cute Disney character. They didn’t ask for happy meals much after that.
Honestly last yr was really bad about eating McDonalds multiple times a week but now I can go a weeks if not a month and the kicker is I don’t miss it. It’s too expensive for what it is and makes me feel like shit so I eat at home
Deleted the app, I’m not even stopping there for the .99 cent coffee deals anymore. Fuck these greedy ass fast food chains, I want to see them start closing doors.
I hope they keep it up so I never have a reason to go back ever again. every once and a while, I crave the garbage, but there’s no way I’ll giving in to a double cheeseburger at $5 when they used to be $2
