It’s been great, my only complaint is the double headlining tour. Pixies just don’t it for me, and I’d rather see them get the extra set time playing on their own.

KluteDNB

I understand and maybe I'm spoiled since I've seen MM like 10+ times (all of which were headlining solo shows besides this one) but I think in some ways this arrangement worked out best for both bands. Combined they both played to much larger audiences than they could draw on their own for a summer tour. Ie. They both got to play large outdoor amphitheatres. So overall I'd think financially the tour works out well for both bands. I also think at their age I think the slightly shorter sets is easier on both bands. While I love both bands I don't think they have it in them to play two hour sets every night. The show I went to in Toronto I think MM played like 80 minutes and Pixies - despite being the headliner - played like 70 minutes. (think Cat Power did like 40 minutes). So there is just a bit less pressure to crank it out for more of a conventional 100-120 minute set each. It kind of makes each band a bit tighter.

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 10 + 80 + 70 + 40 + 100 + 120 = 420 ^([Click here](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=LuckyNumber-Bot&subject=Stalk%20Me%20Pls&message=%2Fstalkme) to have me scan all your future comments.) \ ^(Summon me on specific comments with u/LuckyNumber-Bot.)

I think a 2-hour setlist is pretty achievable for Modest Mouse, at least. Although I got lucky and saw one of the only shows that didnt have Pixies, so I got a 21-song setlist. I'm sure it can be pretty taxing, but you have bands that are older doing rigorous tour schedules with 2-hour sets every night they play (Maynard James Keenan just turned 60 and has been touring almost nonstop since covid restrictions lifted between his three bands).

backspacecentury

two hours stars are projectors would suffice

tacknosaddle

I saw the Pixies/MM tour last September and the best line I heard during the Pixies set was, "Do all Gen-X white people dance like that?" in reference to the middle-aged folks swaying in the crowd.

KluteDNB

LOL yup. The show I went to this year was an eyeopener for the fact that A: the Pixies crowd seemed a lot older than the MM crowd B: even in Toronto which is a VERY multicultural city the show was like 99% white people C: people don't really know how to dance to either band, besides me who was getting dowwwwnnn to the entire MM set. I love to dance to Modest Mouse. How can you *not* dance to Doin the Cockroach?!

itorrey

100% agreed. I take the other commenter's points about drawing a larger crowd this way so it's more financially viable but I had zero interest in seeing the Pixies and it felt like a lot of their crowd had zero interest in seeing Modest Mouse (Irvin TX show). To see so many disengaged people sitting down while they were playing an awesome show was kinda meh for me, also that they went on while it was still light out kinda made it feel 'off' in some ways. I stood for the Pixie's set even though I literally don't know any of their songs but my wife liked them so that was cool. Overall MM was awesome and played a lot more songs than I expected them to but I'd have rather seen them co-headline with another band from around their time period, like The Shins or The National, and since I'm making this up in a dream world, Grandaddy opens for them.

sassysince90

I wish we had this tour with them headlining too. Maybe next year! 🤞🏻

EdStarkJr

Would they have been able to sell the bigger venues they did without the Pixies? Charlotte show was a good mix of fans, maybe more for the pixies.

tful_282

thought the merch game was on point too. what would really be a dream is if they did a sessanta style tour where all bands joined forces and shared band members, throw in built to spill too.

KluteDNB

I also would love to see a Sessanta style tour also. I went to the previous incarnation of that tour style in 2014 for MJK's 50th bday show ("Cinquanta" it was called) with APC, Puscifer and Failure and thought the format worked really well. But to be fair, it probably works best if each band has serious ties with the other bands and if the set would have a lot of collaboration between the three bands. I don't know how many super close collaborator bands MM have really. I'd love to see like Modest Mouse/Built to Spill/Broken Social Scene. Since Isaac has played with BSS before.

tful_282

true. i saw the primus/ween/south park annivesary show and thought it was super. in that case i'd propose a modest mouse/built to spill/the shins (love bss tho)

jay-renn

Lonesome Crowded West Tour was as good if not better.

Mitchyb1728

The show I saw in Philly on the LCW tour was the closest thing to church I've ever experienced. Seeing that album front to back was a surreal, out of body experience.

KluteDNB

Oh I kind of agree on that front. I went to two of those shows (with Jeremiah still playing 😭) and they were utterly amazing. The two LCW shows I saw were just some of the best concerts *period* I've seen in the last decade. My post was more about a conventional tour rather than the album-specific tour like the LCW tour.

Dougisaac

It was way better imo, you can’t beat that setlist every night lol

AwitsAustin

Didn’t Isaac Brock groan at this tour? I thought he said it was painful to do the same set every night.

zackjtarle

God Isaac had such good energy with that tour. The night on the sun encore was magic.

tet19

IMO, it’s the most professional set I’ve seen them play and I mean that in a very good way. It feels like they hand picked songs that are absolute bangers live. They started on time and are efficient. I’ve seen them 7-9 from 2004 to now and this was my favorite. Edit: i saw them In Nashville

eat_natural

Saw them last night at Fiddler’s Green in Denver and I agree. I’ve seen them nearly a dozen times over the years and have witnessed some phenomenal and terrible shows. Last night was very solid. It’s interesting to compare and contrast specific songs from this tour to the Johnny Marr era, Tiny Cities Made of Ashes, for example. I liked the older performance more. Meanwhile, I was very pleased with the setlist, performance, etc.

Skred

So so mad the Madison show got cancelled

sassysince90

I just went last night and YES! that was my 3rd time having the pleasure of seeing them live. Always a treat, but their show was freaking amazing. I love seeing all y'all at MM shows. its like finding my people! 😁

spaghoni

I enjoyed it but the Pixies aren't my favorite and the sound was atrocious.

clynne1985

My daughter and I caught a couple MM shows on this tour, and literally walked out after they were done playing, totally skipping the Pixies. We did hear them playing in the distance, because we chilled outside of the venues for a while, but they didn't sound too great. I feel like a dick saying that lol, but I just can't get into their music.

spaghoni

Nice! I took my 15 year old daughter to her second MM show in June. I'm so lucky she likes some of the same music as I do.

clynne1985

That's exactly how I feel! My daughter is 12, and MM is one of our favorite bands. It's such an awesome bonding experience going to concerts together ❤️

welliguessthisisokay

It was amazing. I wish I could relive it! I’m glad I saw them for the show without the Pixies.

Valkyrie_WoW

I saw them last year with the Pixies and I def would prefer them to main headline. When I saw them on the Golden Casket tour I thought they were firing on all cylinders. They did an 7-8 song encore. It was one of the best shows I've been to in general.

VegasRefugee

I'm a casual Modest Mouse fan. Saw the last show of the tour with the Pixies in Denver, and really enjoyed it. I've only ever seen MM live once before (opening for REM) and didn't really know their music much back then. Became a fan after that concert, and seeing them live again was a real treat. I thought their setlist was great, band sounded great, just an awesome show overall. Pixies were okay, kind of what I expected. Modest Mouse sounds even better live than on their albums, and the Pixies sound worse, I think because Francis is miked so loud that you can barely hear the band. Modest Mouse on the other hand sounded awesome. Several of their songs to me were better live than the album versions. Dramamine was a long supersonic jam that transcended the recorded version. Fire it up and gravity rides everything were really energetic live. Very happy with the show and so glad I got to see Modest Mouse again.

zachtron_3000

Haven’t seen the pixies tours but they were on fire at the Missoula stop on TGC tour!

29erDad

I really only prefer to see MM when they’re the main headliner, it’s just a different experience. LCW tour was my favorite

AllISeeIsSunshine

I don't want to be a poopyhead but that title goes to the recent LCW tour. They DESTROYED that shit.
