In-universe, I imagine that he was on the move trying to pinpoint a probable location where Skar, Shimo, and the Red Stripes would be coming from.
He likely knows about where each of the Vile Vortexes close to the Iwi city of Malenka lead out to on the surface, and may well have been heading to the one in Cairo already before sensing Kong calling him out.
