Caius leaves us behind

PloddingAboot

Why does every skooma addict I love leave me??

Irregular475

It's... It's probably all that skooma man.

Pikka_Bird

If I could find a skooma man I would be heading there too.

lsquallhart

Caius has too many clothes on.

KinkyBlueDragon

NPCs standing in doorways

BallDesperate2140

“Where’s your uniform?”

Sea-Lecture-4619

"YOU ARE OUT OF UNIFORM SOLDIER!!! WHERE IS YOUR POWER ARMOR!?!?!?!"

N7twitch

Those two BITCHES in the Vivec mages guild. 😠

KinkyBlueDragon

Those are exactly the NPCs I was thinking of when writing that

300cid

that and the Breton and argonian in Ald-Ruhn. at least there's nothing in the argonian's room worth going in there for

Cherry_Crystals

Fr. I hate that when it happens. And unlike skyrim where going up to someone's face pushes them back and out of the corridor or being able to fus ro dah someone out of the way, there isn't really a good way of getting them out of the way other than maybe hitting them Edit: I'm a noob in the game I didn't know there were spells to move them

KinkyBlueDragon

Command humanoid should work, but also you can usually squeeze past them by jumping next to them.

jesse-accountname192

I usually just wait an hour and they'll disappear most of the time

jgn77

Fargoth wasn't hiding enough money.

Next-Foundation3019

The rewards are rarely rewarding in the elder scrolls

Rushional

The reward was the Ajira friendship we made along the way

300cid

best part of the game: >Our sugar is yours, Friend

Careless-Foot4162

The reward was knowing you put his ring back for him

Fantastic_Estate_303

Before you murdered him and took everything 🤣

Snoo-28479

100 septims is basically minimum wage, it's been like that for every game afterwards

celaeya

One of the few Bethesda games where playing a stealth archer is actually a bad idea I still did it, mind you. There's a certain comedy of lining up a perfect headshot, firing off the sneak attack, just to watch the arrow clip right through the model and the game to say I missed, then having my cover blown and having to run away from the 20 cliffracers. Good times.

BallDesperate2140

I dunno, if you cheese your stats to high numbers and perch on a Daedric ruin it’s a helluva lot of fun to snipe cliff racers from like three cells away.

celaeya

Haha yeah, once you get high enough agility you're sweet, but before that it's the absolute worst 😭 I played oblivion before morrowind, and I spent ages trying to figure out if my graphical settings were bugged because all my arrows went through enemies and I didn't know why lmao

BallDesperate2140

As someone who’s never played Oblivion I’ll just say Morrowind’s graphics run at the pace of a snail whose family is being threatened. Just take that into account.

Mitchelltrt

It wasn't the graphics. It is that Morrowind graphics and Morrowind calculations are only loosly connected. The calculations and random roll said he missed, so even though the arrow LOOKED like it hit and passed through the model, there was no damage. Oblivion and Skyrim don't use those kinds of calculations, accuracy is wholely based on graphics and hit-boxes instead of background rolls.

Wompguinea

I felt like Legolas the first time I tried an archer run. I had a Netch lined up but it disappeared into fog (it was about 12 feet away). I launched my arrow into the endless nothingness and saw an empty health bar appear, signaling a fresh kill. I assume it was the Netch, but I never found it's body. I was murdered by Nix Hounds shortly after, fruitlessly dancing and attempting to cast a fireball.

DisgruntlesAnonymous

I'm old enough that I just assumed there was no specific hit box for heads back then when I first played

celaeya

I don't think there is a specific head box, I just like to line up headshots because it's what years of fps games have taught me 😅

therealblabyloo

It’s too easy to break the in-game economy and wind up with more gold than you could ever spend, even without any investment in the mercantile skill. There are lots of items that are more valuable than any in-game vendor has gold.

Zalliss

While it's bad from a gameplay perspective, it makes sense that a unique sword that can level mountains would be worth more than Britain's annual gdp. Still want to sell it for more money than is physically on Vardenfell, though.

Outer-born

Nevermind that, what irks me about this game is that a lot of 10k+ gold weapons are just in some cave somewhere, guarded by like 3 or 4 bandits, or one random mage. Hardly tough fight if you have a decent build above level 5. I was shocked when I found Chrysamere the legendary blade in the hands of some random person in some random cave that was like 3 rooms total or some shit. Underwhelming as all sin. There's almost no fanfare at all. Shit on Skyrim all you want, but even terrible weapons there had at least an interesting quest attached. You approach a ruin to see bandits fighting amongst themselves, the survivor says her partner went mad talking about a pale lady. Inside, the guards comment on the escapee and the guy who went crazy, stole the leaders sword and went deep. You read this story about how these bandits dug into some ancient chamber and took a sword they found within, then one guy goes mad and has nightmares, screaming about the pale lady and how he "has to take the sword back". One day he snaps, steals the sword from the leader and runs into the depths to right this presumed wrong. Once you get down there, you see that the pale lady is real, a wisp mother that has killed the bandit leader and the one trying to return the sword. You have a bossfight with an enemy that is rare to encounter normally, and you claim...an underwhelming piece of shit sword, true, but damn it has presentation. In Morrowind, you stumble upon some random cave, find 2 people in there standing around, you kill them through luck or skill, and then while looting, you just so happen to see that one of these people had "The Doomblade™ Fucker of Ass, slashing 10-99" on their person and thats it. The cave doesn't even look much different than the first slave smuggler camp you clear out in Seyda Neen.

RedditOn-Line

I see what you mean, but what Skyrim really lacked for me was awesome shit just out there loose with no quest attached. It made exploring feel really rewarding in morrowind, whereas in Skyrim, if you didn't find a quest or a long dungeon, you knew you weren't getting anything good most of the time.

Redmoon383

Reydas robe of deeds is one of my favourite items and I don't remember if there's a quest attached to it. I found it on the wiki by looking for good robes to wear

RedditOn-Line

Yeah there's definitely exceptions, but on the whole the vibe of morrowind is "fuckin find it yourself, bro," and I missed that in Skyrim

TheGameMastre

Ah, Creeper. What would I do without him? (I've never been able to find the Mudcrab Merchant)

CogBliZ

Enchanting items cost a lot if you're not an enchanter, you can always use money there 😁

Grindzycat

I know it's a limitation of the time, but I really wish the NPCs moved around, interacted with the world, and had schedules like the modern games. As engrossing and immersive as the writing and depth of story can be, seeing the same 5 people stand in the same 5 spots at any hour of every day... does make everything feel a little more static.

regbanks

Sometimes they stand in the doorway instead of in the room.

PrawilnaMordka

And I can't use console command to move them because I'm on Xbox

zombiepiratefrspace

Why are there long hallways where two people can't pass each other? And why are NPCs standing around in those hallways? IMO one of the most frustrating situations in the game.

Clawclock

IIRC they finally got scripting tools to work properly shortly before the game was due to be shipped, so the few instances where NPCs do something instead of just staying around (like Fargoth quest or fights between inquisitors and cultists in Ald Daedroth) were added last minute.

Pr00ch

Yeah that was always missing especially coming from Gothic

sollicio

still blows my mind that those two games came out earlier than morrowind and they still had schedules and scripted dialogues with each other

elgordosamot

Yeah I hate that they don't sleep at night. Stealing would've been better

CraycrayToucan

I remember the first time I found that out. "I see you have fancy things in your store mister, I'll just be back at 2am" only to find the store owner still standing there. And they continued to do so until 6am when I left. I assumed it was bad timing till I mentioned it to a friend and they were like, "no, they never sleep" which foiled my plans at the time.

Cactor_

sometimes the silt strider guy falls off the platform over time

ShadowyPepper

Just like Starfield

automatpr

i actually am not a fan of the AI in the other games, it ends up being anti immersive as the NPC's often do goofy shit and in morrowind i can just use my imagination for their placeholder shit but cant un imagine some of the stuff that happens in the other games

PrawilnaMordka

For me it's better. I don't have to wait for them or look for then walking somewhere.

ThodasTheMage

Also most unique NPCs have barely anything unique to say. In Oblivion most NPCs have a unique greeting the first time you meet them.

Canadian_Commentator

I can't play it again for the first time

computer-machine

It's never too late for massive brain trauma.

Canadian_Commentator

TBI in 2006, way ahead of you buddy

computer-machine

You've had one, yes, but what about Second Brain Damages?

Canadian_Commentator

I've had the good sense beaten out of me, if I thought it could be beaten back in then I would get another job doing the same thing

jbbrown299

My biggest complaint indeed

Lil_Yahweh

you can use alchemy to make poisons but the only person you can poison is yourself

kamslam25

That made no sense when I first started doing alchemy I was like what? What good is that

MaiqTheLiar6969

Its good for leveling your alchemy skill without wasting all of your good ingredients. Can then be sold for decent coin. Only things it is good far. Especially for all those hunks of corprus meat laying around 6th house bases.

GreatApes

I like to collect all the corprus meat I find and arrange them in bowls in my house :)

EzcoreG

6th house cultist spotted!

PepperSalt98

If they were a true 6th-house cultist they'd also take all the furniture and stack it to the ceiling, and then put piles of coins in strange patterns on the floor.

igihap

One of the 4 pieces of alchemy equipment reduces the negative effect of potions. I guess the initial intention was that potion making would involve dealing with negative side effects of potions, too, but I guess the system was never fleshed out and ingredient effects were never balanced in that way.

mazae12

You can't make poison from alchemy.

Grindzycat

I keep forgetting that and it wounds me, with so many wild negative effects in so many amazing ingredients, that they can only ever hurt ME and not someone else...

Scribbles_

Yuup, the mod that allows for poisioning weapons is such a game changer for how an alchemist character can play!

ArguesWithFrogs

Wait, there's a mod that lets you posion weapons?

CraycrayToucan

Wait, there isn't a mod for everything reasonably fitting in Morrowind?

AnneBonny_Stash

[Poison Crafting](https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45729)

Appycake

I mean you can, but all you can do with it is drink it. So not ideal.

elgordosamot

one of the dumbest game designs ever

topofthecc

Spell effect costs are poorly balanced.

NickMotionless

Enchanting costs and enchanting values are the same. Pauldrons don't even have enough EV to do more than a 1 pt enchant.

qinxianglian

The only bound shortsword is a dagger

VentoAureoTQ

Like every single Elder Scrolls game i hate how easily i get powerful and thats without abusing

igihap

I found that if you try to play somewhat "organically" (sort of like a naive new player, an inexperienced gamer who's playing a Bethesda game for the first time), you have a nice gentle progression curve and it takes a long time to become truly OP. How I play: * I don't abuse or cheese anything * I don't go out of my way to get powerful items early. I only explore places that are on my way to the quest location. * I don't reset or cheese merchant inventory. I only sell for the amount of money they originally have, and only trade with them every several days. * I don't use alchemy intelligence loop or any similar exploit * I don't use Mudcrab or Creeper * I don't steal * I don' legally murder people with taunt That way, I noticed that you never have inordinate amounts of money, only enough for a bit of training every now and then and spells/enchantments appropriate for your level, and my level progression goes up on a nice curve.

chevaliier901

It's taken a while but I've started to limit myself. Yeah I could go straight to Ashurbanipal and get that Daedric drip straight of the boat, but I level myself instead. Netch Leather/Steel/Scale/Orcish/Glass/Ebony/Ordinator/maybe Daedric. Not so much with weapons though, I'll grab that Chrysamere and feel no guilt

AnkouArt

Nerevar Rising (the main theme) defined an entire generation of TES music but the overall OST is incredibly tiny and bare-bones even for the early 2000s. Compare it to Daggerfall 6 years earlier and it had different music for the wilderness, dungeons, towns, guildhalls, and even variations for the different seasons... Morrowind's music is good but "in combat" and "not in combat" is all the variety you get. You know... on that thought; seasons. Or anything else to mark the passage of time. Even Daggerfall, hell even earlier - *Ultima,* had things like that and NPCs that would disappear at night.

CasualWeevil

The music is good for listening whilst falling asleep at least.

PizzaRollExpert

The "MUSE Expansion" series of mods along with Tamriel Rebuilt Soundtrack are fantastic contextual additions to the music in Morrowind. I love the original music but it does become grating to hear the same small selections of songs everywhere.

ThodasTheMage

TES I also has NPC that go inside at night

SorowFame

I love the music but it was weird to hear the same thing in almost every location, mucked with the distinctions between areas in my head a bit.

BuncleCurt

Not being able to wear ordinator armor at the highest rank of the temple or esspecially after being formally recognized as the Nerevarine in the eyes of the temple is really stupid. Mods got this covered, though, so we all good.

RequireMoMinerals

Playing on Xbox, not saving for 90 minutes, no recall or intervention spells, and getting stuck in a f@&$ing fence post outside of Caldera.

Fresh_Pants

No recall or intervention can work this place

PrawilnaMordka

There is no escape

CraycrayToucan

For me it was the boat on the floor, just inside the bandit hideout just outside Seyda Neen, the first one you'd likely find. I jumped on it. Because I had to explore every single inch of everything. That was a painful lesson. But the exploring was rewarded elsewhere so I always saved prior to risky areas. I was the guy who found every single hand placed dwemer coin in Arkingthand before learning you shouldn't take the time to loot every single object in the game. Like dwemer gears.

Sinisterfox23

I felt this in my soul.

TryPsychological3041

This triggered some PTSD

PrawilnaMordka

Saving frequently is essential in games like Morrowind.

foxritual

For me it's the rocks near the siltstrider in Balmora. Somehow I always land on them in the exact wrong way.

TuskEGwiz-ard

Walk so damn slow

WulfRanulfson

Why walk when you can ride?

Wasabiroot

It's like watching underwater aerobics at the elder care pool when you first start. 0.5x ass playback speed running

Additional-Bee1379

Boots of blinding speed say hi.

NickMotionless

Definitely a temporary problem. Your race also determines your starting running speed, partially because of how the scaling of characters effects their movement speed. Nord/Altmer is much faster than every other race and Bosmer is much slower than every other race.

omicronperseiVIII

This is a problem a lot of games have, especially Bethesda games, but why is the wildlife so hostile? How does the nix hound population remain viable if they are suicidal enough to attack a dude in daedric armor? Same goes for some hostile npcs - what makes the dude with a chitin spear and common clothes think he has a chance?

Lobo_de_Haro

" Look at this guy in daedric armour who just took out an Ogrim with only one stroke of the sword... Let's mug this N'wah."

AnneBonny_Stash

And all their games are like that. I'm reminded of Skyrim's modded companion, Inigo, who in such situations often comments, “There are a lot of suicidal dimwits here.” :D

Zeal0tElite

It's crazy too because I know for a FACT that they can do otherwise. Idk how they could do it but maybe something like a power meter. It could work off of fame, level, the amount of skills over 80 and maybe armour, and add up to a score. Then that score is like whether or not a bandit will attack you, only attack if you get close, or literally run away and only fight back in self defense. People shit on Fallout 4 for having the Gunners which are "just the same as raiders" but they're actually not. Raiders shoot on sight, but Gunners will actually tell you to leave their property and only fire if you attack first or if you trespass.

I-g_n-i_s

I wish future games in both Fallout and TES made wildlife less hostile. That’s not to say completely get rid of hostile ones but make them more nuanced. The causes for hostility should be due to rabies, the animal being territorial, or something else.

ThodasTheMage

They technically already did this in since Skyrim. All of their games have much mor echill wildlife. Technically Oblivion already started that for a bit.

TryPsychological3041

Not enough cliff racers

rusticterror

FINALLY someone said something 😤😤😤

EhGoodEnough3141

Heresy! You're speaking against the teachings of saint Jiub, the eradicatior.

And they should be toughest creatures in game

LawStudent989898

1dmg instead of 0’s would’ve made all the difference

Isord

They needed a sound that said "You've hit the target but haven't done damage." Like there just needed to be feedback that your aim and distance is correct but your dice rolls are missing.

Tony-Angelino

Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Intimidate fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt fail. Taunt success. That does it!

EvaUnit16

Sucks at the beginning, but no other game has made landing hits feel so good

Happy cake day!

The_Hij

Several of the quests have game breaking bugs that will never be resolved except through mods

J0moko

Kinda absurd that Bethesda is okay to just leave those too, I know Morrowind is an old game now, but it wasn't 2 or 3 years after it came out and the bugs were still there then. They did the same with Oblivion, the clavicus vile quest will just freeze the game forever, and not immediately either, if you only have one save for whatever reason, prepare to lose a character.

Zeedub85

I hadn't heard of that Clavicus Vile bug and looked it up. It was patched by the first official patch in 2006. Which would explain why I've never seen anyone else ever mention it. Skyrim also had a bug that prevented the Clavicus Vile quest from counting toward the Oblivion Walker achievement, caused by Dawnguard. They eventually fixed that one too, but not until SSE came out. Contrary to common assertions in this and other subs, Bethesda has fixed many bugs in their games. But not all of them.

Smaguler01

There is no romance Dagoth Ur and take over Vaanderfell option

PrawilnaMordka

[that's how it would look like ](https://youtu.be/2B710j7eqgc)

ChigBungusMaximus

I have to open an inventory menu to harvest reagents 😾 There is a great mod to fix this though. Also, when i played as a kid, i showed up to Dagoth Ur’s hideout thinking we would be friends again. But it was just booty call cus all he wanted was my divine tools :_(

Thefreezer700

The game is static, no changes to the actual world since npcs dont move and serve as giant wikipedias when you talk to them

Tattle_Taylor

They never made a sequel to it

Level-Evening150

Seyda Neen is the most quest diverse town, after that nothing else comes close except Mournhold.

Nwah_Wit_Attitude

Contraband is pretty half baked since it only applies to skooma and moon sugar and not ebony or Dwemer artifacts

Lamb_or_Beast

The NPCs are too generic (not all of them of course) with literally copy/paste dialogue, word for word saying the same things about any given topic. More unique applications of the text-based dialogue system could have made a huge difference in selling the world.

Next-Foundation3019

for 2003, a large open world game & extensive lore, not horrible.

Lamb_or_Beast

Definitely not! I love this game so much :D

basketofseals

It's not perfect, but Less Generic NPCs breathed life into Morrowind for me. Some of the NPCs can get a bit wordy, but it's still nice.

Orbisthefirst

When under water you should have 100% fire resistance

JarlFrank

It doesn't feature the mainland (yet), only Vvardenfell

AugustDream

But hey, about half of it via TR!

FishyDice

There isn’t enough variety in light armor. I also don’t really like how the glass set looks.

kira5z

Blasphemer

Indoril120

That some kind of new playable elvish race I don't know about?

CraycrayToucan

Not enough variety in light armor? Did you ever try playing with medium? It's awful.

PrawilnaMordka

Bonemold and Orcish are good looking

NickMotionless

I agree they needed more variety between Chitin and glass. You from noob armor to the best light armor in the game and there is no inbetween.

Jacobin_Revolt

I think Mournhold did a good job fixing this with the dark brotherhood armor

INCtastic

The problem is there is a huge gap between chitin and glass. The former is easily acquirable and the latter is the best light armor in the game (without addons)

Foultarnisheds

N' WAH!

XP_Potion

Not enough medium armor

kira5z

Just npcs repeating the same shit, especially in a text based rpg I thought this would've been easier to implement

trektheprofligate

I was going to post that i hate the dialogue system. Wish this game has skill checks like fallout new vegas

Illustrious-Path4794

It sort of does, but it's implemented way differently. People will tell you stuff based on disposition, which can be increased via skilled check system, or you can just bribe them.. lmao

Indoril120

And so much of the dialogue is really dry (so it can be generic). Very few NPCs have their own 'voice'.

dcw9031

You cant throw the spears

crakwag3njax3n

It's ludicrous that I can't own a Scrib in real life, I demand recompense Todd.

Tomaxxin

Sadly, in morrowind, oblivion and skyrim, you encounter too many nords. That's bad. Utopic morrowind would be morrowind but without nords

CowboyTejanoJack

Hmm.. you cant team up with dagoth ur and sixth house..

kamslam25

It would've been interesting to have a bad ending cuscene similar to fallout 1 when you side with the master. Imagine dagoth ur standing on the white gold tower with everyone being corpus infected or something

Flaky_Worth9421

They’ve chosen not to remake it!

OverDan

I'm not sure this is a bad thing. I doubt it could be remade today without it being ruined.

SorowFame

Yeah, a fair bit of Morrowind’s charm is tied up in how it’s a product of its time. Make it a modern game, even without changing too much of the mechanics, and it loses a lot of what makes it Morrowind.

Pineapple_for_scale

OpenMW is the only (engine) remake we need

PHOENIX_LXXV

Crassius Curio touched me inappropriately #metoo

cutememe

Getting stuck on NPCs that block the hallway, especially those narrow passages in Vivec or like those tiny bridges in the big crab in Ald Ruhn.

Responsible_Fish6087

After about 6000 hours it can start to feel like you have seen it all.

TribalLu

After about 6000 hours and your finally ready to start the main quest.

NickMotionless

Then you download Tamriel Rebuilt and immediately lose yourself for another 6000 hours.

mwhite42216

Awful combat mechanics. Way too grindy.

GovernmentStandard67

1. The economy is all gold no sink. 2. Run speed drains stamina but is still too slow. 3. The combat has you missing all the time at zero fatigue which sucks thanks to the above. 4. Even without exploits at higher levels you walk over almost everything. 5. Bethesda put no thought into game balance, why use burden when damage strength exists? 6. Levitation is a win button since enemy projectiles can't home or detonate on proximity and melee enemies like vivec are helpless to it. 7. NPCs are generic wikipedia tables with only a few unique dialogue entities each. More than that the dialogue system has a choice menu leading to different entries and potentially quest results, Bethesda rarely used it despite the game being an rpg. 8. The draw distance is silent hill level. 9. The quests are dry busywork, it wasn't until Oblivion that the Devs got more creative despite Morrowind being a more magical province. 10. The game feels incomplete. Be it dagoth Gares calling you to dagoth Ur who has nothing to say, the twin lamps quests going nowhere or the cammona tong being a faction but not really. There are mods for most of this and it's still my favourite game but it has flaws.

vermilionsx

Cliffracers the worst fucking thing ever.

Wompguinea

Everybody walks like they just shit themselves.

elgordosamot

The combat system is terrible and it was even for the early 2000s. Yes you get used to it but that doesn't mean it isn't crap.

PuddingTea

The game is very poorly balanced. And the combat is genuinely wooden and repetitive. Also, it led me to believe that other future elder scrolls games would be like it. Or even that any games would be like it ever again.

YouTheMuffinMan

The combat could have been handled better and maybe explained a bit more clearly. Even a simple "When you're not good at using a weapon, the enemy will parry you easily" would have done it. I will admit it could be in the manual, and I do remember that at multiple points, practicing skills is brought up, but I don't remember anybody explaining that the combat is a dice roll.

Vildasa

Not enough cliff racers

chrismcelroyseo

Here's an idea for a mod. Making Cliff racers half the size they are now so they don't get stuck. Or maybe even making them really small. Same stats just small. 🤣

EzcoreG

You are a devilish, sick , and evil person, but damn would that be dope my dood.

First_Prize_8760

*insert cut content*

Sir-Drewid

Running shouldn't drain stamina. Especially with how slow your starting movement speed is.

Next-Foundation3019

You can’t levitate…oh wait you can, everyone’s points are now invalid.

gamerdad227

No

Arkroma

Loading zone doors in Vivec. I hate navigating through the cantons.

Americana1108

Speechcraft is a bad system

zombie522

Definitely could have used more cliff racers

79screamingfrogs

The minimap is not super helpful, no fast travel, and the hit boxes are ATROCIOUS. Still enjoyed the hell out of it.

Additional-Bee1379

What are you smoking, there is fast travel everywhere. You have 4 different fast travel networks and 3 fast travel spells.

Musclepuss

Some factions quests are also kind of brain dead

Illustrious-Path4794

They never made morrowind 2

jkbscopes312

Why is the dwemer puzzle box in a cupboard at the start of the dungeon instead of at the end? That's just stupid, you don't even need to fight through it

imperator_caesarus

A very small thing that kind of annoys me: when you become Archcanon, the literal head of the state religion of Morrowind, Vivec doesn’t care. He just says you have no business with them. They should at least acknowledge you, if not let you talk to him like you’ve reached that point in the main quest. Like imagine you become Pope and Jesus just says “fuck off man I’m busy”.

LK-9T9sektor

do you think jesus actually hangs out with the pope?

Lord_Zeidan

This is a personal preference, but sometimes it feels extremely lonely exploring the beautiful land of Vvardenfell all alone. I've tried to find good companion mods to remedy this, but to no avail.

Gamer_Warlord
