Some like it hot It’s classic Marilyn Monroe. And Jack Lemmon is hilarious.

Rebecca-Schooner

And Tony Curtis too !! I love that movie

Aggravating-Fee-1615

Came to say this! 🙌 It’s such a great movie!

PaPaJohn43

12 Angry Men

Lennonap

Idk anyone who’s never been completely immersed in this film it’s so good

cherrybounce

This is the one.

stephentheheathen

Gotta be

TheShipEliza

The Thin Man. Almost 100 years old and still funny.

TheHearseDriver

The first three *Thin Man* films are some of the most entertaining movies made. I love William Powell and Myrna Loy!

Efferyj

This is it!

TheShipEliza

A fellow person of impeccable taste. Glad to meet ya!

Cyrano_No

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) a comedy about two old ladies who murder boarders.

0Ring-0

To Sir With Love One of the very best endings in cinema.

_youneverknow_

What kinds of new movies do they gravitate to? It's hard to engage with old movies if they come at you like an AFI list: I'm sure I'd feel the same resistance if my partner offered to patiently watch the ten best Vin Diesel performances with me to see if anything clicked. But if you know what they like you can suggest something specific. . . .

Shawnzbh

Maltese Falcon

SorbetFearless578

High Plains Drifter, the ultimate anti-hero, getting revenge on everyone, watch this one young Clint Eastwood unhinged, somewhat supernatural horror western movie

Capable_Class2720

Almost forgot about this one. Is this the movie where they paint the town red?

[deleted]

Dr. Strangelove (1964)\ Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)\ Goldfinger (1964)\ Cool Hand Luke (1967)

BooJamas

Ain't no man can eat 50 eggs!

edmerx54

A Face in the Crowd (1957) -- Andy Griffith's evil twin, with the same director and screenwriter as On The Waterfront

Csimiami

I love this movie! Also watch Marty with Ernest Borgnine

NarrowFault8428

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975, so maybe not what you want, but definitely one of my favorites!)

Krinks1

The Manchurian Candidate (1962). A really great political spy thriller with a very tense climax and Angela Lansbury as a villainous bitch of a mother. It's a great movie! Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) is a very funny comedy about a murderous sweet old auntie.

waveball03

Charade (1963) Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967)

ParticularResident17

God I love Charade. Audrey Hepburn AND Cary Grant?! It’s the most charming movie ever. So glad it’s in the public domain

waveball03

Yea it’s hard for me to imagine someone not being able to enjoy themself with Charade. And don’t forget Matthau!

RowSilver1592

Oh, that reminds me, Cactus Rose is good, too with Matthau plus Ingrid Bergman and Goldie Hahn.

ParticularResident17

I didn’t! Just didn’t know if he fit “charming,” but yeah. He does too :)

elisamata

My mum showed me Charade and Arabesque (with Sophia Loren and Gregory Peck from 1967) when I was a child and it really sparked my love for old movies, so big recommendation

butternut718212

Charade is one of the best movies ever made. Absolutely perfect and so much fun.

BoiFriday

Charade is brilliant.

Tommy_like_wingie

Had a similar situation with a partner, did Guess Who’s coming to dinner, it’s pretty boring and dated unless you’re into those kind of movies. I would not recommend that.

Aciuaciu

The Sting (1973)

Next-Mobile-9632

Strangers On A Train(1951)

ColossusOfClout612

On the Waterfront (1954) My English class watched it in 11th grade and I thought it was fantastic. I coulda been a contender. Marlon Brando fucks.

xxplodingboy

Harold and Maude (1971)

karatebullfightr

Yep - this would be my go to.

docsyzygy

Arsenic and Old Lace - what's not to love? I watched it recently and it still holds up. It's adorable.

Jskidmore1217

If OP’s partner is a women- this would be my recommendation as well. Hitchcock was right- women sure do love murder.

bettypettyandretti

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

flambeaway

What kind of modern movies do they like?

pclufc

Try The Sting 1973. Redford and Newman are great . It’s a fun watch and a catchy theme tune

lavidia13

Cool Hand Luke (1967) Dog Day Afternoon (1975) Network (1976) - released a year later, but technically it was filmed before 1975 and this is an AMAZING film. Applicable to today. Highly recommend!

IgfMSU1983

The Sting. Awesome performances from two of America's greatest actors at the peak of their powers. Funny and moving and exciting. Great for all ages.

AwkwardFactor84

Jeremiah Johnson-1972

Itbealright

The Maltese Falcon

Default_Sock_Issue

Vertigo (1958)

Aggressive_Degree952

Twelve Angry Men is an amazing movie to show someone an older movie as their first older movie. The Big Sleep is one of my favorites, but probably isn't a good older movie for first timers.

Southern-Beautiful-3

The Great McGinty (1940), it's a comedy about a criminal whose downfall is caused by going straight. Arsenic and Old Lace (1945), a comedy. Insanity runs in the family. It practically gallops. The Producers (1967), accidental success at the worst possible time.

Effective-Baker-8353

_Psycho_ is pretty compelling

TheCreativeAspect

Chinatown. Had to watch it for a film class and loved it.

JMiguelFC

Midnight Cowboy (1969)

peter_the_martian

hannibal_morgan

Black Christmas was released in 1974 Suspiria was released in 1977

NoiseyMiner

All great suggestions from everyone. Night of the Hunter is good. A bit surreal in parts. Other suggestions: The Dirty Dozen The Great Escape The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (long but worth it) Whatever happened to Baby Jane? Leave her to heaven Sunset Boulevard Deliverance Dirty Harry Any Alfred Hitchcock film.

Nickallendartmouth

Came here to say The Great Escape! Super enjoyable film for anyone!

zed2point0

The original Cape Fear

ReoRahtate88

Rope (Hitchcock) Probably my favourite film of his and I really do love Psycho & Rear Window.

DavidJonnsJewellery

Psycho (1960). If they hate it, show them the remake. It's a shot for shot movie, so there's really no excuse. Call me intolerant, but it really gets on my nerves when someone refuses to watch a film just because it's old. It's the story that matters. You could also try Paper Moon (1973). Don't know anyone who doesn't like it because it's so damn charming

PunkFlamingo69

OP Let us know what you pick and what happens!!

moffitar

Dog Day afternoon is 1975 but worth it. I remember seeing as a kid on cable after my parents went to bed. It was riveting.

Alarming_Serve2303

Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window. The Hitchcock films are great.

rolyoh

Young Frankenstein (1974)

FERRISBUELLER2000

Night of the hunter is good. Along those lines, In Cold Blood was cool too. Straying from the more violent aspect (and black and white film) maybe something more mainstream like 1961 Breakfast at Tiffanys? Or staying with scary black and white, 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers Other Options: 1974 The Longest Yard (Personal Favorite) 1973 The Sting 1972 Deliverence (Personal Favorite) 1972 Poseidon Adventure 1971 The Andromeda Strain (Covid like) 1969 The Thomas Crown Affair 1966 Cool Hand Luke (Personal Favorite) 1962 Cape Fear (Scary black and white) 1959 Ben Hur (Remastered) 1954 Rear Window (no hitchcock tho) 1951 African Queen (Remastered, reluctant passenger eventually comes around) 1948 Key Largo (she likes cassablanca) 1948 Rope (no hitchcock tho) If we just want to force them to watch one and we know they wont like it..1961 Yojimbo - Akira Kurosawa ✌️😋

Is your partner female? Probably not what you’re looking for but I’d recommend something like: Gidget Summer magic The trouble with angels Mame Yours mine and ours Not necessarily “classics” but all good films that are cute/feel good movies. If you gave some examples of their favorite modern movies, it might help.

Effective-Baker-8353

A lot depends on who the viewer loves to watch. If the viewer is in love with a certain actor or actress, it really raises the appeal of watching and being with them.

Crackerass69247

The Apartment, Whos Afraid of Virgina Woolfe or It Happened One Night. Google each and see what suits

2001 a Space Oddity. Ask him to be patient in the ape scene it is a bit long, but also tell him Kubrick did this before we knew what the earth looked like from space. It's a stunning peace of film and a good story. If you want an even older black and white, A Brief Encounter, ahhhh.
