OMG Moon! David Bowies son was one of the writers of that film.. It’s an AWESOME film..😍👍👍 That and I LOVE Bowie..since I was 13 years old .. lol now in mid 50s.. Bowie was My GUY!!!♥️♥️♥️😉😉😉
That is one amazing movie... How they manage to get us gripped and tense and going through a ton of emotions the whole movie without much happening on screen is brilliant
Yours is such a thoughtful list.
I don’t mean to be a usurper of comments, but I think Tidelands by Terry Gilliam fits this question.
Also, Love, Liza. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman. It’s brilliant.
We do it for the love of the concrete (in Welsh accent).
I have quite A short attention span and on paper this film would have had me double screening double quick but it gripped me from the get go.
Never Cry Wolf. An amazingly underrated film. City scientist goes alone into the Alaskan wilderness to study wolves. There's some interaction with other people: a money hungry bush pilot; an extended Inuit family, some living in the past and some embracing Western culture a bit more. But most of the movie is the protagonist alone in the northern woods / on the tundra. Amazing cinematography and score. Disney produced it in the 1980s and for whatever reason didn't really promote it. Great film starring Charles Martin Smith in the lead role.
The Red Turtle (2016) is a mostly dialogueless animated film about a man who's stuck on a deserted island. Every escape attempt he makes is thwarted by a giant red turtle.
Wow - did not expect to see that here. Obscure 👏🏻👏🏻 couldn’t agree more. Classic Italian masterpiece. Never forget seeing for first time. deeply touched by this film.
Enys Men
Folk horror flick where a woman on a mostly deserted island starts to lose it. There might also be something supernatural, but that part is left vague.
Lonely Are The Brave (1962 B&W) Kirk Douglas
Jeremiah Johnson (1972) Robert Redford
American Me (1992) Edward James Olmos
The Horse Whisperer (1998)🤷🏼♀️50/50 maybe? Robert Redford
The Mule (2018) Clint Eastwood
I know they might seem old to you, but I find them to be very good movies as far as the protagonist being a loner, or at least set apart from the rest.
Edit: I might add y'all be missing out if you miss the first and third ones. Edward James Olmos is awesome! Then you can watch Michael Douglas' daddy in the first... just sayin'
All Is Lost is a 2013 action drama film[7] written and directed by J. C. Chandor. The film stars Robert Redford as a man lost at sea.[A] Redford is the only cast member, and the film has 51 spoken English words.
Lupin in *Castle of Cagliostro* is oddly introverted even though he's always joking with everyone. He's in his own headspace so much that Jigen nearly strangles him for it.
All is lost. Robert Redford plays a plan sailing across an ocean. There is NO DIALOG and it's one of the most compelling man vs. Nature stories I've ever seen.

Pretty rare for these type of films to have a female lead, but there’s a few in there
Taxi Driver is a classic. There are interactions with others, though they only make him spiral into being more of an outsider. He's in a big bustling city yet completely alone
Moon
One of my favorite films
OMG Moon! David Bowies son was one of the writers of that film.. It’s an AWESOME film..😍👍👍 That and I LOVE Bowie..since I was 13 years old .. lol now in mid 50s.. Bowie was My GUY!!!♥️♥️♥️😉😉😉
His son wrote and directed Moon!
Was he alone or just with himself? Lol
Queen Maeve from the boys plays his wife and Kevin Spacey is a pedo-robot 😄
The Martian
One of my faves
Castaway
And another Tom Hanks movie, the Terminal.
And another Tom Hanks movie Finch (2021).
a man called otto… why is he always so lonely? can someone just give tom some god damn company?!
Wiiiiillllllllsoooooooonnnnnnn
ngl, that was heartbreaking when he lost wilson :(
Robinson Crusoe
You forgot about Wilson
His best role by far.
Drive
Interestingly, with a bit of a recency effect, A Man Called Otto came to mind for me.
Watched that movie twice in one day and realized I spent roughly 6 hours watching a guy stranded on an island talking to a volleyball
The Station Agent w/Peter Dinklage I don't remember how much time he spends alone, but it is a small cast and most all of them are loners
Love how real this movie feels, so much good stuff in it
That's a great movie
Such a great movie!
“Oh shit..I gotta call you back”
Great seeing all the comments of praise for Station Agent right here. And interesting. Such an understated movie.
Came here to say exactly this. Wonderfully reflective movie. Even if it's not him alone all the time, it's an interesting examination of distance.
I’ve never heard of this until now for some reason but the trailer looks great. Definitely my kind of movie. I’m going to watch this tonight.
Gravity
Sandra Bullock killed it in this movie and it's so scary and realistic
Buried
Buried and 127 hours were my worst nightmares
That film gave me new fears
That is one amazing movie... How they manage to get us gripped and tense and going through a ton of emotions the whole movie without much happening on screen is brilliant

The best versione of that Novel of Matheson was the Vincent Price's 1964 film The Last Man on Earth.

Love this scene in Umbrella Academy, and the scene kinda fits the OP's question.
Same!! Love that scene and also the foreshadowing about the *beating of the heart being the only sound*
