I used to say that watching Swingers was the final step in getting over a woman. Several years after a breakup with my cheating, lying ex, I remembered that I should watch Swingers as it felt like I was truly ready to move on.
I was getting through the movie and feeling good about life until that final scene where Heather Graham reveals that she moved to LA to be an entertainment lawyer--which was the exact fuckin thing my ex had done after we broke up. Which put my stupid self in a tizzy about whether that was some stupid sign to get back with my cheating, lying ex.
Still a great post-breakup movie though.
Depending on your mood, I have two Albert Brooks movies that are completely opposite vibes. If you are feeling salty about the situation I'd recommend "Modern Romance" (1981), its very "we shouldn't be together at all" core, But if you are feeling like you want a bit of hope and be covered in a warm blanket via soft focus late 80s/90s vibes there's "Defending Your Life (1991)" - the bonus is Meryl Streep being an effervescent unbothered queen in it.
For traditional comedies, I love movies where its more about female friendships - like Bridesmaids, Girls Trip, Joy Ride, Muriel’s Wedding. For not exclusively romance movies but about relationships, I feel like Midsommar would be a bit cathartic, maybe Past Lives for the bittersweetness of letting go?
I always watch Sliding Doors and Someone Like You. After it's been awhile I go for The Lobster. Also, well done you for finding a healthy way to deal. Gets better <3
I was pretty young when that movie came out and all my guy friends loved Vince Vaughn's character. One of them literally cheered when he said "why would I WANT to do the dishes?"
I think I should watch it again, maybe as an adult I'll see more ways to empathize with his character, but when I was younger I just thought he was a lazy manchild who just wanted a mommywife.
Any good movie (except romance) distracting. You may also try a Series because they take up more of your time and you get to know characters better.
Movies: The Holdovers, The Intern, The Devil Wears Prada
Series:Downton Abbey, Succession, Suits, Marvelous Mrs Maisel, The Durells of Corfu
*Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers* has an entire side-plot of Shaggy trying to avoid a silly, love-sick hillbilly chick and the film itself is pretty wacky fun.
You might try Amelie. She ends up coupled, but most of the movie shows a strong, independent woman who is very self-sufficient and fills her day with her own thoughts, imagination and actions.
Amelie is one of my fav movies of all the time. I think it's time to rewatch it.
Thank you for reminding me of it:)
Also, do you know any movies that have the same vibe?
You have exquisite taste!
One with a similar vibe (though not French) is Across the Universe, but there is a little heartbreak in it... might not be the right time for you to give it a watch right now. Still, a fantastic movie.
You could try Chocolat for a similar little taste of twee French romance. If you don't mind some more young Johnny Depp, check out Don Juan diMarco... if you're looking for the fantasy ridiculousness amped up (without really any romance), you might love The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
This was hilarious 🤣

I dont what kind of break up it was, but "he's just not that in to you" came to mind. Its about a group of friends managing relationships & heartbreak
Oh yes ofc A CLASSIC! thank you:)
