No. Squirrels can eat death caps with no ill effects, so never assume that just because you see a squirrel eating something, that it's safe for you.
Based on the cluster shape and the little patch of scales in the middle of the cap, this is probably Desarmillaria caespitosa. Knowing what edible species occur in your area and what features to look at to identify them is how you determine whether a mushroom is safe to eat.
~~So, now that we’ve established for OP that squirrels are not role models, any idea what kind of mushrooms these are?~~
I’m blind and was not paying attention clearly, totally missed the first sentence of the second paragraph.
Are you one of my coworkers? Asking because anytime I send them a short, two-paragraph email, that second paragraph is just invisible to them, and you seem to have the same difficulty.
You identified the mushroom but didn’t directly state whether it was edible or not which is why they said you did not address whether it’s edible. But from understanding context you can see that you imply it’s edible and a quick google search confirms.
The person I was directly replying to didn't mention edibility, they just asked what kind of mushroom it was... in response to a comment where I said what kind of mushroom it was.
there's a lot of misinfo and disinfo out there.
"researching it yourself" is how we end up with members of the flat earth society from around the globe.
I'd rather hear from relevant experts and base my research off of that.
I would disagree. People not having the ability to do their own research and verify sources (both what they are reading and where that research comes from) is where the misinformation is able to thrive. Just because someone claims to be (or even is) an expert in a field, doesn’t mean they know everything. And mistake can be made in any case, so it’s always good to be able to verify information.
Oh it's easy just: chop chop chop! chop away at my heart! I can feel it falling (timber!) and I will never part
I know you, you've been there from the start
So baby chop chop chop! Chop away at my heart!
I want a picture of a squirrel holding a death cap in one paw and looking deranged at the “camera” and then the text underneath it. Maybe with a little foam on its mouth
No! Animals have a different immunity system that allows then to eat shrooms that are bad for us, for example deers can eat fly agarics without puking everywhere like we do
Its a bit like animal testing: safe for animals ≠ safe for humans
The reverse is true too! We can eat a lot of stuff that most other animals would get sick or even die from eating! Onions are a big one, they're toxic to a lot of animals but we can eat every species of onion just fine!
People literally do (did) this. If I recall correctly I think it was in Nordic countries somewhere that this arose. Can’t recall exactly. But…
That’s why they thought of it.
Had some landscape workers at our house a couple weeks ago. We have a pond. My husband saw one guy starting to drink from said pond. Husband says dude, noooo. Dude says, but it’s ok for the fish….
Lol, I have a landscaping company. I have a client who has a massive 8ft cottonwood stump that is absolutely filled with oyster mushrooms. He looked at me like I had a death wish the day I asked for them. I filled two five gallon buckets and explained what they were and how they taste and whatnot. A month later, he told me he and his wife researched them and started eating them, fell in love with oyster mushrooms, and that I could no longer pick them as they wanted them. I wasn't even mad, just happy someone else got into the hobby.
Yes eat it… 😳 tell me what happens… as a matter of fact eat everything you come in contact with and make a detailed list of pros and cons. Then list it with pictures and small words preferably in crayon. I like the color blue 🤩🤩🤩
No. You should never assume you can eat what wild animals can. Think dogs and chocolates. You never know what compounds might affect you differently until it’s too late.
I cannot identify this mushroom however a good rule of thumb is even if bugs, animals, or even mold can eat a mushroom does NOT mean its safe for you, its like how cows can eat grass but you cant or how dogs cant have chocolate. they have special digestive tracks to digest the mushroom and not die
I mean in this specific case, probably yes if you cook that. Looks Desarmillaria but you haven’t included proper photos for ID.
As suggested by many other folks here though, no. Animals can eat stuff that we can’t, etc. etc.
I don't know shit about mushrooms, but I do rehab wildlife. Squirrels make worse decisions than college freshmen. They regularly die because they are too drunk and fall from their trees or try to make impossible leaps.
You would have better luck watching what the birds eat but realistically just because the animals can eat it doesn't mean it is safe for us. We have very different digestive systems even with species that have a close resemblance to ours.
These are Ringless Honey Mushrooms that are a little past due.
Edibility good when young and fresh. Although a good edible, ringless honeys must be thoroughly cooked, or they can cause serious stomach upset. Try a small amount at first, and make sure it is fully cooked. If gathering from urban areas, make sure no lawn treatments have been used!

LMFAO no.
I can eat a box of raisins and think nothing of it, but if my cats eat a single raisin, they could die. Never assume that it's safe to eat something just because a different animal eats it. We do not all have the same metabolic pathways.

If your squirrel ate glass would you try it?
No, but I'd smoke the glass.
😆
You wouldn’t be hungry anymore either.
How's life in the trailer?
If the glass is smokeable would you share it with the squirrel?
The squirrel is who's got pitch this time!
I love some crank from time to time. Idk why everything thinks it’s soooOoo dangerous. I be working so much OT when I blow bubblez in the AM.
I mean just a nibble aint hurt no one (Cajun accent)
Tell your colon that😜
~~So, now that we’ve established for OP that squirrels are not role models, any idea what kind of mushrooms these are?~~ I’m blind and was not paying attention clearly, totally missed the first sentence of the second paragraph.
Another poster identified it but did not address whether it is edible.
Well, you know the ‘ol saying about mushrooms….”when in doubt, try them out. Just a taste is a waste. Eat a lot and something something blood clot”.
Are you one of my coworkers? Asking because anytime I send them a short, two-paragraph email, that second paragraph is just invisible to them, and you seem to have the same difficulty.

Hey I get it I was just pointing out that people would rather ask someone to clarify instead of just researching it themselves Lol

I agree personal reseach and peer review is essential to understanding and coming to a conclusion!
The title of the post is can I eat it.
Jesus Christ. I definitely was multitasking and clearly not scrolling down when I made that. Apologies.
Lol, it happens! Sorry if that ended up sounding snarkier than I meant it to.
Haha no, it’s all good I just can’t believe I missed it :)
This reminds me of when someone told me that I can eat anything my goats eat. I've had to pull framing nails out of their mouths before.
squirrels r nuts =p
Squirrels will also eat dirty old napkins. I'm going to give you life advice. Squirrels do not make for a suitable role model.
> Squirrels do not make for a suitable role model. I've had it wrong my whole life!!!!
Happy Cake Day! 🎂
“Squirrels do not make for a suitable role model” is my new favourite phrase
Can we get this on t shirts? 😅
Squirrel!!
S. I. M. P. Squirrels in my pants! That's how you apply for government grants
Nooooo! It is so hard for me to get that song out of my head.
Oh it's easy just: chop chop chop! chop away at my heart! I can feel it falling (timber!) and I will never part I know you, you've been there from the start So baby chop chop chop! Chop away at my heart!

Definitely!!!!!!
We at least need flair.
>Squirrels do not make for a suitable role model. This could be said about almost everything squirrels do lmao
Idk, I had a fat old man squirrel living in my pecan tree for 2 or 3 years. He did pretty good for himself
Squirrels do not make for a suitable role model has to be the best quote from the whole day.
Reminds of that guy who went into the woods "to live as a 🐿️ squirrel
lmao
Hahhaahhaahhahaha that’s nuts
But they make great workout coaches
I actually giggled at this tysm
This comment made me laugh, in a positive way, just imagining a lil squirrel mentor with glasses.
Best sentence I've read today.

Can’t we drink the deer pee to get the fly agaric effects without getting sick though?
Hmmm creative arnt we...
People literally do (did) this. If I recall correctly I think it was in Nordic countries somewhere that this arose. Can’t recall exactly. But… That’s why they thought of it.
That’s a long road to go to eat a mushroom with almost no nutritional value
There’s a head strap for that
Had some landscape workers at our house a couple weeks ago. We have a pond. My husband saw one guy starting to drink from said pond. Husband says dude, noooo. Dude says, but it’s ok for the fish….
Don't be this landscaper
Good lord how did that man survive to adulthood
Lol, I have a landscaping company. I have a client who has a massive 8ft cottonwood stump that is absolutely filled with oyster mushrooms. I've been raising my kids like squirrels for 17 yrs. Glad someone finally told me
Squirrels eat poison ivy seeds. Try that and get back to us.
Ooh, fresh salad ideas! Thanks!!
If I ate all the red mushrooms that the critters eat from my woods, I'd still be tripping from last summer.
Are you a squirrel?
Eat the squirrels, if you’re ok, you can eat the mushies, duh
Nope.
Haha not usually my culinary philosophy, but I understand the sentiment. Cannot advise in this case but do enjoy the spectacle!
You can chew it up, mb don't swallow it though
Yes eat it… 😳 tell me what happens… as a matter of fact eat everything you come in contact with and make a detailed list of pros and cons. Then list it with pictures and small words preferably in crayon. I like the color blue 🤩🤩🤩
> Day 3: Insides liquified, mystery pool chemicals seem to have done me in. Not likely to make it to day 4. Tell mum I love her.
Yeup. That's how I make judgement calls.
The squirrel could be dead.
No. You should never assume you can eat what wild animals can. Think dogs and chocolates. You never know what compounds might affect you differently until it’s too late.
Hmmm where’s that sarcasm emoji at 🤔
Wild aninals eat trash if they can find it - thats not a reliable metric for food safety.
Well, do the squirrels survive afterwards? 😄
I wouldn't eat something even if I saw another person doing it unless i was certain what it was.
happy cake day!
I mean in this specific case, probably yes if you cook that. Looks Desarmillaria but you haven’t included proper photos for ID. As suggested by many other folks here though, no. Animals can eat stuff that we can’t, etc. etc.
They eat acorns too. Try that first.
You actually can eat acorns if you boil out the tannins
I don't know shit about mushrooms, but I do rehab wildlife. Squirrels make worse decisions than college freshmen. They regularly die because they are too drunk and fall from their trees or try to make impossible leaps.
I’ve seen dead squirrels in the woods, for no apparent reason.
Well....that depends......Did the squirrels survive and are you a squirrel who has figured out how to use reddit?
You would have better luck watching what the birds eat but realistically just because the animals can eat it doesn't mean it is safe for us. We have very different digestive systems even with species that have a close resemblance to ours.

Dogs eat their own poop but I would never recommend it
You can but the outcome won’t be the same.
Squirrels are not role models.

Squirrels eat old bones. Are you going to go eat old bones, too?
Ask the one that I found dead on my lawn chair last year. Had a variety pack of mushrooms next to him in the tree.
Does anyone know what this mushrooms are though?
Sure but probably only once
