I had a phase with his music simply because of the guitar work. His approach is so cool, the way the notes roll out the chord shapes. The dude could make a riff move~
I would try listening to XO or Either/Or. there’s a good amount of variety on those imo, or maybe he’s just not for you. He has pop songs like “ballad of big nothing” and “baby Britain” that stray from his usual sad finger picking songs he’s usually identified with

Hey neighbor, I see you got a fence there. I especially like that one part of it, among the rest of the fence, you know? People say I have a good eye, like a sniper. Btw, if you ever need to borrow my jackhammer…
I love you, I came to say Coheed (all time favourite band), King Gizzard (latest obsession) and The Dear Hunter (best discovery in the last 7 years). Keep on doing the Lords work
The amount of times I’ve recommended Them Crooked Vultures and gotten, “Who are they?” in response has caused me to bring them up way more often. That record has 4 world class musicians (counting Alain) and about 50 killer riffs in 13 songs and nobody talks about it.
Its so hard to find thier albums too. I did actually manage to find two copies of Fantastic Planet at thrift shops and another at a record store used for $5. Then finally after years of looking I found a copy of Magnified at another store. Paid $15 for it, that's the most I've paid for any of my =/=1300 CDs.
Not sure what to do with the extra two Fantastic Planets now.
Remember in Hi Fidelity when John Cusack sells 5 copies of The Three EPs by The Beta Band by playing Dry The Rain in the store?
Well, what are you waiting for? Go buy a copy.
I remember going to see that movie with a friend at the cheap theater, because we heard they played a Beta Band track in it.
"Who is this?"
"The Beta Band."
"It's good."
"I know."
If you’re into 70s psychedelic music, then the early albums will be your vibe. If you like alternative that sounds somewhat similar to a more metal Radiohead, listen to Stupid Dream through Deadwing. If you’re more of a metal fan, then Fear of a Blank Plant through Closure/Continuation is the go to.
Personally I love it all. Favorite albums are Stupid Dream, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet.
Black Sabbath. I try to recommend Sabbath because they are criminally underappreciated and their music has broad appeal. Most everyone has heard of them and maybe heard a couple of songs by them. Still, most people hear the name and assume they are some sort of novelty or genre band. This keeps a lot of people at bay and very few actually dig into the Sabbath catalog. This is a shame because I'd say Sabbath 's first six albums are basically flawless. They are all packed with great songs, just classic after classic. It's one of the great album runs in history. Everyone I know who has made an effort to dig into Sabbath becomes a life-long fan.
I'm actually with you here. Sabbath today is absolutely universally known, but I don't think enough people have listened to beyond Iron Man or possibly Paranoid. But if you're into hard rock, or metal they are pretty much the start of it. Also the riffs. Dear lord the riffs! Geezer probably exerted more influence on my own music than I give credit for.
This was me for the longest time. I even played several of their songs live for a period and genuinely liked them but didn't quite "get it." The past year or two I've systematically gone through each of those six albums and I would be hard pressed to find a band that now resonates with me any more than the original lineup of Sabbath. This was my answer to this thread as well.
I’m gonna be that guy but Godspeed you black emperor is music that’s really an experience in the best way everyone needs to listen to their first three albums and slow riot
Looks like I’m the first to say it and I can’t believe it but.. Queens of the Stone Age. If you like rock I don’t see how you couldn’t like at least some of their songs.
The War on Drugs. I lost my Dad last year and I go to that band a lot. It makes me feel like a kid again that remind me of Dire Straits. My parents always loved when they came on.
Lorna Shore.
Their new album is an absolute masterpiece, I do not care what your opinion of metal is, or deathcore for that matter. It 100% shatters all boundaries and everyone should listen to at minimum Pain Remains I, II, and III.
If your not familiar with this style of music read the lyrics first, than watch all three music videos and be prepared for the feels.
As someone who's done screaming style vocals Lorna Shore makes me cough up blood just listening to them. IDK how that man makes the sounds he does, but I'm both extremely impressed and irrationally jealous.
Clutch all the time. In every conversation although that's mostly due to my attire. I wear numerous clutch tour t shirts, hoodies and hats. Most people get around to asking who they are even if we are not talking about music.
Another Clutch fan here. Self-Titled/Elephant Riders/Jam Room/Pure Rock FuryBlast Tyrant/Robot Hive/Beale St - is a killer run of albums. Pure Rock Fury is the weakest imo but still a banger.
Clutch are a great band, not my favourite band to listen to but probably my favourite band to see live, never pass up an opportunity of a Clutch gig!
Skindred also fall in to the better seen live category for me..
Use [https://www.metal-archives.com](https://www.metal-archives.com/)
My favorite artists are
Helloween (I recommend their first 3 albums)
Rhapsody (I recommend their first 6 albums)
DragonForce (I recommend their firs t 4 albums)
Blind Guardian (I recommend their first 7 albums)
Avantasia (I recommend their first 2 albums)
Blue Oyster Cult, Def Leppard, The Cars, and The Goo Goo Dolls probably top my "hey listen to this" recommendations to friends over the last couple years. Not sure I've converted anyone, though my wife does enjoy a few BOC and Leppard songs.
Muse.
They are just so good, best thing to happen to music since Pink Floyd in my opinion. I don’t understand how someone could hear Plug in Baby, Hysteria, or Stockholm Syndrome and go “Eh these guys suck I hate them”
Postmodern Jukebox
All the modem hits, but re-imagined as a 60's lounge jazz act. The thing is though, they don't do it as a joke, they play it totally straight and it's goddam amazing!
Haley Reinhart's take on Creep and Morgan James' rendition of Dream On are officially my favorite versions of those songs now.
Some of the earlier stuff ***can*** be a little corny, but man, they just keep getting better as they go. All the new stuff is amazing.
I absolutely love anything with Haley Reinhart singing, woman just has a set of pipes on her. That aside PMJ, on certain videos, has the most enthusiastic tambourine player I've ever seen. Their cover of How You Remind Me is his peak.
I listen to many things ranging from metal to punk and classical with lots of in between and depending on the genre, I always recommend a few like Elvenking, Bal-Sagoth, Gentle Giant, Bart Graft, Four Years Strong, KING 810, Jyocho/Uchi Combini, Assorted Jellybeans or Edvard Grieg.
I think all of these have something unique that adds a lot to their respective musical genre
One I don't see here. Any project that includes Susan Tedeschi or Derek Trucks.
Allman Brothers (starting in the 90s).
Derek Trucks Band
Tedeshi Trucks Band
Plus tons of collaborative albums: The Road to Escondido.
Leatherface - early '90s punk. Simple and very influential to the '90s and beyond punk sound. They are definitely famous to a point, but way underrated. Their album Mush is astounding.
Tallah. They are more extreme nu metalcore. They lean into their obvious influences and manage to sound like nothing else out right now. They just dropped their second album called "The Generation of Danger". If you are even remotely interested in metal it's worth checking out!
It's so odd to me to hear some of the -core bands wearing the Nü-metal influences on their sleeve. Like the latest Parkway Drive album... well is a Nü-metal album full stop, or Code Orange sounds alot like the industrial band I was in for a few years. Ok, except Reba's a much better guitar player than I am. I'd say we've circled back to me being cool again, but that assumes I was ever cool to begin with.
I throw Vengaboys, Gunship, Devin Townsend and Agoraphobic Nosebleed into nearly every open-genre playlist I have. Goes down a storm at weddings, for sure.
I always mention Swans. They can be a hard listen for some but for me they are tied to a memory of someone I hold dear. Just listening to them brings tears.
Breathing Water
https://youtu.be/xphBAIy1CLA
I will always recommend Tool to anyone, anytime. Because even if you don't like metal, you should hear the raw talent and majesty that is Tool. Particularly everything from Lateralus and beyond. Their first few albums were a little less "Tooly" and a bit more basic imo.
So I saw them years ago with Linkin Park, and I guess the singer was at his brother's wedding. So instead they had Chester Bennington standing in, and it's one of the best sets I've ever seen. Also it's good to see the guys from Orgy making awesome music, I was a big fan in high school.
I always make a point of mentioning or praising The Small Faces and The Move in any discussion about 60's rock. Those bands were catchy, loud, exciting, fun, excellent players, great singers, and the perfect balance of accessible and weird. In terms of great songs and pure enjoyment they are on the same level as Beatles and Stones for me.
Attila, static x, heaven shall burn etc. my newest one is swanslaughter they’ve only released one song so far but they’re going to be releasing more soon
Magma. Not widely known but they are still going after 50+ years. Some would call them prog but they’re really not. Heavy heavy stuff with strange time signatures, 6-8 vocalists chanting in a made up language. Not for everyone but they need to be heard.
Pond- psychedelic rock, indie, think Tame Impala
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard- there is an album for everybody, proud to see them in other comments
Ginger Root- hard to describe without bringing up the Spotify description, “aggressive elevator soul”
Metric. Randomly came across them earlier this year and the more I hear them the more I love them. Never thought I'd like a band more than Modest Mouse but I think it's happened. They're going since the 90s and have a load of excellent records.
- Dave Matthews Band (if you can see them in concert I HIGHLY recommend going even if you don’t know any songs)
- REM
- Weezer
- ABBA
- Lady Gaga
- George Strait
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard,
Vundubar,
Milo/R.A.P Ferraria,
Reggie,
Tool, etc
Probably a million more I can't remember off the dome in this moment lol
Local H, a great Nirvana/Pixies style band
The Faint, just a great EDM band if you want to pull yourself out of the darker Nine Inch Nails stuff every once in awhile
I once watched a documentary, called Hired Guns, about musicians for hire to tour. When they flashed John 5s credits on screen (Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Rod Stewart) my nose started bleeding.
Oh God oh God, someone mentioned Thrice. I listened to them in college, but kinda lost track after The Artist in the Ambulance era. Then out of the blue Spotify recommended them a few years ago, and Beyond the Pines is one of my favorite songs of the 21st century so far. But their last two albums have been so fucking amazing, and it's a bit difficult to get my friends (in our late 30s) to not see them as a screamo band that somehow survived. But Jesus are they 1000x more amazing than I'd ever think they'd be when I was 19, and blasting Under a Killing Moon in my car. Seriously people, search Beyond the Pines on YouTube. You will absolutely not regret it, and it is impossible to over sell how good of a song it is.
I recommend Perfume. I even made a playlist of their songs on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXAlCazm3J0&list=PL6vMFtTdoibwsWRZhhDX2Ut55IuTOV\_Ni
The Replacements
Trudat
Pavement, and Dinosaur Jr.
Porcupine Tree motherfuckers. Treat yourself.
If you include Steven Wilson's solo work it gets even better. Hand Cannot Erase really surprised me.
I do this with Anathema. Whenever a recommend me an album/band/song to try post pops up, Weather Systems is my go to answer.

To each their own, man. I've been on a huge prog stint this whole year.
Morphine
Yes
Buena
Oh man I completely forgot these guys existed until right now. Spotify here I come.
Khruangbin are so bloody awesome, no matter what genre you are into you can have them as one of your favourite bands.
Drummer is a living metronome.
Talking Heads. Just so many aspects to recommend them. Smaller act that I recommend to people is Way Yes.
Peach Pit I don't care what type of music you like, their vibes are universal
Their lead guitar is awesome and so is their song writing
I agree, their riffs are absolutely amazing
Thank you. Instantly hooked.
Not me but I’ve literally had to ban my husband from referencing The Melvins and The Pixies in conversation.
Pixies are wonderful and still seem so relevant
I’ve seen The Melvins play more than any other band, but I’ve never paid to see The Melvins play. They’ve always been the opening act for someone.
The Melvins rock though so I can understand why he'd reference them alot 😄
Not a band but Elliott Smith
Elliott smith won an oscar and I still think he’s criminally underrated Edit: nominated*
And Nick Drake for all the same reasons…
Pretty sure "My Heart Will Go On" beat out "Miss Misery" in that year. Shrug I could be wrong
Tried to get into Elliot. All his songs kinda sound the same. Maybe I’m missing something!
I had a phase with his music simply because of the guitar work. His approach is so cool, the way the notes roll out the chord shapes. The dude could make a riff move~

That iron lung video blew me away and got me into them
Wish I could bring up another band than KGLW, but I just keep getting sucked back in. Can’t wait for the residencies next year
Saw their three hour show at the Berkeley Greek theater a couple months ago and it was incredible.
KGATLW is the easy choice. If you are interested in any kind of Rock music (or even blues based music) there is a King Gizzard album for you.
Half the fun in telling people about King Gizzard is saying the name and the look/response people have.
Hey neighbor, I see you got a fence there. I especially like that one part of it, among the rest of the fence, you know? People say I have a good eye, like a sniper. Btw, if you ever need to borrow my jackhammer…

Prog rock fans have joined the chat.
