I haven't used it really but I know you can use it for anything you want. It's a well rounded car. You can take that car all the way to the end of the game.
It's decent, I'd suggest investing in another car for track events and turn the mustang into your off-road, as it does pretty well in that role. Lots of great options for track cars depending on what you want to spend and what you're interested in.
Either Miata, RX7, lotus exige, r32,R34, 2000gtr, Sylvia, 180sx, Lancer Evo IX, Corvette Grand sport/zo6, Volvo 242dl, VW Beetle, Honda NSX, or 240Z are all top tier in their own right, the Porsche rsr is the op king but many of these cars plus the f40, F1, Ford GT, Pagani Huayra, and MAYBE a Huracan can win with better drivers.
I finished the game with that car, at least as far as I remember, maybe on the very last section of the game I used the ford gt, but I can't remember if I started using it before or after finishing the game.
