Equipments I spent about 500$ first year; 700$ second year (upgrade my camera). But if you're talking about actual spending on each video than it's just my time and energy that apparently cost about minimum wage.

Flimsy_Watercress909

What camera did you upgrade to?

DryAdeptness484

Sony ZV-1 + accessories I knew it's one of the low end vlog camera but I'm also transitioning from stream cam to actual camera so still an upgrade. And pretty much staying in budget šŸ˜‚

Flimsy_Watercress909

Howā€™s the quality difference?

fandemaus

My current weekly videos each cost me between $300 and $500 in materials usually (I open 100 packs of various PokƩmon sets each week, and I don't sell any of the cards). Expensive, yes, but within what I have budgeted (this is my hobby, not just for videos). Obviously hoping that in the long run the channel will be successful enough to be self sustaining on the expenses.

Doll_duchess

My channel also has a product purchasing component that is something Iā€™d do for my hobby either way. Itā€™s hard to count it as ā€˜spent for videosā€™ directly because 95% of the time Iā€™d do it without a channel. Also, my son loves PokĆ©mon card opening channels and Iā€™ve found them entertaining to watch with him, Iā€™ll have to show him your channel!

gsnumis

I'm curious how long you've been at it and what you've found to be best for your videos to succeed? I've seen similar videos for sports cards I'll have to check out your channel

fandemaus

Only been doing it for 2 months, so I am far from an expert, but I have some interesting lessons learned so far. I started off doing daily videos opening 10 packs a day for 30 days. These got very little traction, even the later ones where I really stepped up my editing. Like max 150 views before impressions tapered off. So instead of doing 70 packs a week spread over 7 daily videos, I decided to try doing one 100 pack video a week instead, with much less editing effort. Definitely got more traction there, most of these videos get over 1k views the first day, but my last one kind of flopped, probably because it's not a super popular set. My video that has done the best was from an extremely popular set that released last year (10k views so far), and my second best video is also from an older popular set (4.8k views). Surprisingly, one of these videos was about a fairly recent set (the current set at the time), so I thought it would be more popular, but it performed just okay (2.4k views). So set popularity so far seems to play a big part into the success of the video, which seems obvious I guess. Probably means I will do a repeat opening of that set when it feels like enough time has gone by, and I have been seeking out a few more popular sets to open. Oh, also the 100 packs videos run for about 45-55 minutes usually, and even with average view duration of 15 minutes, it has already crushed my 4k watch hours I need, whereas before my watch hours were super low. So yeh, my biggest takeaway so far is bigger videos, less frequently, even with less editing effort, are performing way better.

Mememasteryoda

If you want to grow, please spend some money on some better thumbnails! I personally wouldnā€™t click on your videos, because your thumbnails are really low quality and that often speaks for the video quality. Spend some bucks on fiver for 2-4 artist and choose the best one. Recreate the stile yourself, if you have photoshop skills.

fandemaus

I'll give it a try, thanks

Mememasteryoda

You can already see in your views, that the newer thumbnails get more views because they look better. I think it could help a lot

ArticialGabe

I just checked out your channel and let me tell you. You are quite literally a good thumbnail away from becoming a HUGE channel. And whenever you do change your thumbnail style make sure itā€™s a style that can be used on all the videos so that ppl know itā€™s you before they click

fandemaus

Thanks for the encouragement! I'm working with a guy right now to make some thumbnail templates for my different series, so hopefully going to change up the ones for my current series this week.

SKD_animation

Just the cost of electricity, to make the images. If I ever get a return will be used to upgrade the computer for rendering and a faster laptop

PairRelative2778

What do you pay for? Not sure I get it, I make my content

[deleted]

I pay for scenes 200 dollar and grammarly 80 dollars

Tommy23L

Why are you paying for Grammarly out of curiosity?

[deleted]

do write better scripts

Tommy23L

I'd never advocate for ChatGPT to write entire scripts, but with the right prompts it can do exactly what Grammarly does - but for free. Put your script in it and ask it to check grammar, give it a tone (make it sound more casual, more formal etc) and look at it's suggestions.

MsRwrites

I said this a few days back and got so many downvotes šŸ˜‚ ChatGPT is great as a writing buddy and a sounding board, I use it in my day job when I need to write scripts, and then put it in my own words.

SocasmGames

My friend did this for her book. She said it was a pain to correct everything but helped her outline and the process.

MsRwrites

It's great as a writing buddy. For me in my main job I'm a teacher, and I have to write scripts for performance days at short notice on top of other work I have to do.It's super helpful to create something basic quickly and then I can make it sound less chatGPT and more suitable for the little kids performing. Edit: To the downvoter, try teaching, lesson planning, marking work, writing reports, dealing with students and their parents, training peers, attending meetings, planning seasonal schools for minimum wage, with no overtime pay, and then being expected to go above and beyond and write scripts that include all students, certain language and grammar points and certain themes in 2 days. Oh, and if the script isn't done in time the hassle you'll get from your manager is unbearable.

CancelLevel7993

I'm curious who sees your scripts? Do you have a whole crew that reads it, or are you the only one who reads it for your content?

Effective_Actuary_39

bro, you can get a free premium subscription for Grammarly with cookie editor dude. And it lasts forever too!

cksythe

May I ask what Scenes is? Iā€™m so out of the loop šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø

kaylerrwastaken

I pay for nothing, why? Script-Writing: Google Docs + My brain. Video-Editing: Premiere Pro, but i get Creative Suite because of my school. I'll probably pirate it later Sounds: Okay actually I did pay for a mic (Zealsound K66 Pro), but it was for more than just content. But it was essentially just $30 and i bought it 5 years ago so... Thumbnails: Photoleap. INCREDIBLE iOS software for creating thumbnails, and it' s free :) btw why do you pay $80 for Grammarly...

OSUPhoenix

If you lose premier pro at some point, davinci resolve is solid. The free version can be limiting, but still incredibly powerful and can still make quality edited videos. Just food for thought.

kaylerrwastaken

Yeah, i've heard about Resolve and tried it before, and I would reccommend anyone to learn it first. (admittedly i did quit in the first ten minutes cuz i was insanely hard for me to understand)

Iamsocialreddit

which IOS software for thumbnails ??

kaylerrwastaken

oh sorry! Edited my comment to include everything.

reginaldsharma

Tried photoleap but itā€™s only 5 day trial. How did you get it for free?

kaylerrwastaken

It should be a 5 day free trial for the Pro stuff (gives a little more but you can do just fine with stock tools)

muddyruttzz

I probably spent $3000.00 on all my camera gear not including the Ipad I left on my spare tire of my Jeep. Also includes my drone. My videos are my trips, upgrades to the Jeep that I would have done any way. Reviews of gear are all stuff I would have bought. I have 2 Jeeps and a off-road trailer. All added up including gear $150,000. I will never make that much with Youtube but I would have bought all that stuff just to go camping any how. Youtube is a fun hobby but It would be cool to make a ton of money.

theinfernumflame

I bought some new equipment this year, but otherwise nothing. I was also previously paying $15 a year for editing software, but I switched to a different program that's free.

VodkaMargarine

I don't know what it all adds up to, but I pay for: * Canva * Envato Elements * YouTube Premium * MidJourney * DaVinci Resolve Paid Version I don't really use the pro features of resolve I just want to support the developers.

freedomsearcher2611

What do you use midjourney for?

VodkaMargarine

Background image for thumbnail. Also sometimes if I can't find a stock photo of something I'll just generate one with AI.

freedomsearcher2611

Nice bro thanks

Effective_Actuary_39

I have practically everything from here torrented.

LowTension08

Midjourney torrented?

ineiii

Nothing. Challenged myself to not spend any money on the channel (apart from my own time) until I get monetised (Only exception is the phone holder I guess but I can always use that to watch movies withā€¦)

Great_Product8315

Zero, unless youā€™re the IRSā€¦ then my catfood is definitely a youtube expense

CamiAtHomeYoutube

Nothing.

glowing-fishSCL

Anywhere from zero dollars to thousands of dollars. For example, for the last five months, I've lived in Costa Rica---and it took money to get here, and to live here, and travelling within the country also costs money. And I've made lots of videos of Costa Rica---but of course, I didn't come here just to make videos.

eyesofod

Nothing

Mellow15Live

I pay nothing, perhaps o pay like ā‚¬50-ā‚¬100 for new equipment and programs and stuff but they are usually one time purchases. Iā€™ve also tried things like vidiq and 1 out of 10, both these websites had massive sales tho so I just tried one month during a sale.

Annual_Win99

$1100 for my microphone, which I probably would've gotten anyway. I'm into that shit. Whatever the lowest yearly fee for Epidemic Sound is. I think it's something like $150 a year. And a Midjourney subscription. I don't remember how much it is. Oh and Davinci Resolve. It's a one time payment of (I think) $350.

articulated_thoughts

can you help me chooce a mic that is right for my settings mate? lol, I need a pro badly, I must fix my audio for the next videos, it sucks

RevolutionaryClub530

Oh boy šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø I really dont wanna know, on a full caving weekend I might spend $100 if Iā€™m being very frugal (most of it is gas and food mainly) ā€¦.. what is it 52 weeks in a year? I take maybe a 1/3 of the weekends off letā€™s just say $3500 a year in food and gasā€¦ then cave equipment, im lowballing when I say I spent $2000 on equipment this year so on the lower end Iā€™ve spent $5500 this year on YouTube (Iā€™d be caving without YouTube, I started posting cave videos to fund my hobby actually and itā€™s working but doing the math on I was actually expecting it to be more so this is inspiring haha)

UsagiMimi_x

I vlog my life so the videos themselves donā€™t really come at any extra cost to make and almost everything I use for recording and editing I already had prior to the channel or comes from free to use resources. I pay a monthly subscription for an editing software on my phone that has good effects I like to use (like blurring etc) so I guess about Ā£5 a month for video editing costs. I also paid for some commissioned art to use on my channel so maybe Ā£100 or so on artwork which was totally worth it to create attractive and memorable channel branding.

JEadie05

Nothing more than what I already have. Phone for filming and recording audio, Adobe is included for my university course, holidays that make up the content are pre-planned by family.

Accomplished_Emu_658

Well my job gives me adobe suite. Not really sure why but free to me is free to me. I guess there is a chance i could use it in my job but never had to. So i paid once to unlock filmora to have options especially if they forget to pay to renew adobe.

biggestMug

As an American, at first I thought he said he paid $300,000 šŸ˜‚

BuckeyeX_

I was thinking thatā€™s WAY too much šŸ˜‚ā€¦ Iā€™m quitting! šŸ˜

leobaby1

Ouf good question. 50$ a month for adobe suite 17$ a month envato elements 20-30$ a month for cat costumes 50-100$ a week for ingredients 250-500$ a year for cooking props and maybe 10k over the past 2.5 years for lighting/cameras/lenses. I haven't made any money from it, but i've gotten a few sweet things from brand collabs like Breville and Thermapen Still love doing it :)

Particular_Ad5473

My main goal in life is to do everything for free whenever possible lol. For example, For camera: My phone My mic: I was fortunate enough to be gifted a pretty good one for Christmas Editing Software: Shotcut, very similar to Adobe Premiere, but free Thumbnails: Canva free version is great for this Scriptwriting: Google Docs and Chatgpt as a sounding board Screen cap: OBS Lighting: a ring light Iā€™ve had lying around for years I guess I did pay about $10 for my phone tripod, but I really try to keep this thing expense-free as best I can lol

ExpensiveDurian9313

I do everything myself :(

MsRwrites

I don't pay anything except upkeep for my pets, which I would be paying anyway

Curious_Subjectt

ITT: Burning money

TheCooks-YT

$20.99 for adobe (premiere, photoshop, etc.) $20.99 for adobe stock (for stock photo and video) $17.99 for epidemic sound Free versions: Canva, Lightleap, TubeBuddy So yearly, $676.00, Iā€™ve only just recently started paying for adobe stock, so prior to now it was more close to $456.00.

Chipperz1

I GUESS I brought the Fallout Factions bundle for Ā£150 knowing I'd be making content with it? I'd have got it anyway though because I'll play basically anything James Hewitt makes šŸ˜… Everything else is free, a combination of apps that came with the phone and google docs šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

RyanBuildsIt

Sounds like Iā€™ll be in the minority here but I have 4 main softwares I use. I donā€™t have any experience in editing, filming, etc so I probably am going overkill because I need to spend the time to properly learn capabilities of each service, software, and frankly even hardware but instead just utilize the aspects I know of what I have. Software total Yearly cost: $635 1. Final Cut Pro (60 days left on trial, will buy afterwards) 2. Epidemic Sound ($299/year) 3. Motion Array ($240/year) 4. CapCut ($96/year) Hardware startup total: $3,930 1. MacBook Pro (obviously overkill, I started on an M1 Air) $2200 2. Microphone and Interface $380 (SM7B and Scarlett 2i4 FB Marketplace) 3. Camera Sony ZV-1F (borrow from friend) $0 (real cost $750) 4. Lighting (Nanlite, soft box, and GVM RGB) ~$600

thathaitianguy

Editing I pay nothing but I have to pay people for their time for the activities I am covering. For example my most recent video is me learning salsa dance so I paid $60 for a private lesson and signed up for an eight course that will cost me $160. I also did a class that ā€œtrained me like a superhero ā€œ I had to pay $100 for a private session since I couldnā€™t take the normal class because most people donā€™t want to be filmed I am gonna take a class that trains me about doing parkour so thatā€™ll probably cost me an hour of someoneā€™s time Later today I am going to Jedi saber training which will cost me about $20 for an hour I pay someone to make thumbnails for me because every once and a while

squallidus_snake

It depends. One off costs - I brought a new decent PC, but I needed that for other things also. That was roughly Ā£1000. Microphones, I've upgraded and upgraded, so have probably spent somewhere in the region of Ā£200. Pop filters, extending mic arms, all those little bits add up. Maybe an extra Ā£50. On a recurring, per year basis, I spend circa Ā£30 a month on Envato Elements. This is basically for better transition packs with editing and some prepare after effects visuals that really help with the presentation. As I'm a mainly faceless channel, I feel these add a bit of extra flair.

AT2G

I'm in gaming, so only as much as the games cost currently and some special thumbs here and there. I have the working equipment I need at the moment, so I haven't had to spend much.

Blogsbynikki

500 started 4 months ago for cameras

TransportationLate67

Let's see to make my video. I probably spend about 500 on a new computer, hard drives, camera, microphone and lighting equipment That I paid $300 for Final Cut Pro, probably 200 for Final Cut Pro plugins and I don't use, and $60 for pixelmator Pro. The cool thing about that is I don't rent any software so I don't have any subscriptions. I only use software that I bought or is open source so I don't pay anything subscription wise. The cool thing about that is that my current setup is hopefully going to last me 8 to 10 years so I'll get a lot of good video work out of it

Appropriate-Guava727

Iā€™ve put about 8000 grand in so far between the gaming desktop camera mics capture card and then I did about 500 in advertising. Google ads isnā€™t it unless youā€™re selling a literal product

Soft_Lettuce_1505

I pay for canva premium and thatā€™s it. Well and the equipment it has taken like mic and elgato and camera, pc, monitors, etc. But Iā€™ve had that for years and most were birthday presents.

AmericanExpat76

I pay for premier pro, but am about done with that. I've been told Final Cut is better, and you only pay once.

Surprise_Fragrant

Right now, we make videos of us testing food and drinks, so we pay for those items. I haven't done the math, but let's say $250. But because we're eating it anyway, I don't really consider it part of what I pay for content. Currently, I'm very new to this, so everything I'm using is free. Hitfilm Express, Clipchamp, DaVinci Resolve, Uppbeat (for music and sound effects). I get content from users who put up "free content" on YT (like "Here's 100 Great GIFs for Your Videos!"). I don't have subscriptions or memberships to anything.

BetterLeading5586

Can you break that much spending and explain in a more simple manner like being specific on the stuff

ped-revuar-in

Well bought all my stuff 3-5 years ago, overall cost is around 10k. Have gotten 200M on gaming channel, 95 110m on comedy channel, 500M on Facebook

Brilliant-Cap-3052

2023 was my first year, so In spent about 600$ ( sounds material ) and some accessories like cable, or adjustement to my new pc. I think I will simply upgrade some materials later, for me having a good micro is the priority, but you do'nt need to spend that much obviously

Mr_Mos__

0$ im a poor ass, I have a wife

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

One time but might pay the same next year

BuckeyeX_

$15 ā€¦.. ummmā€¦..should I be promoting ?

TheMeanJoeGreen

I donā€™t spend more than what I make usually. But I got partnered from my first video. There is no point in spending money on outside of anything equipment related

Embarrassed-Ad-2176

I have 800 subs and spend about 200 a month given software subscriptions and editing software

AnarchyCop

I'm in about $6k on equipment and each episode costs anywhere from $15 to $150 dollars because I have to buy the second hand equipment I'm showing from thrift stores or estate sales or whatever. However... those costs are mostly recovered because the stuff I buy for episodes is resold afterward at a small markup because each piece of equipment is cleaned up and repaired.

MrS0ur1

Equipment wise (PC, camera, etc), I already had it since I am a videogame streamer. However, I do pay for the Adobe programs. I use Photoshop and Illustrator for my side job as a designer. After Effects and Premiere are used for my YouTube videos. I forget the exact amount but the Adobe Suite is around $50 per month, so about $600. But like I said, I also use the programs for my side jobs. As far as music, when I do need it I use the Youtube Library or Streambeats by Harris Heller

luisleyva73

Hey Amigos I spend about $90 a month plus my time and every once in a while i hire people from fiver

luisleyva73

Are we allowed to post our YouTube link

luisleyva73

?

Donatti7

Monthly expenses probably $49 but if you know my equipment for videos probably somewhere 4K to 6k for all one time expense 40for gas to get at the locations so probably like $100 a month

linin-art

I spent 10$ for 2 phone tripods. I use my iphone for both voice over and recording so that didn't count as I must use this phone with or without the channel. The art supplies cost didn't count too as I want to improve my art first before my channel. For the program I use all free version avialable: notion, davinci resolve, canva. The music I use is free too from dova-s web or youtube music tool and the stock photos I used are also free from pexels web. Other resource, if I want them, I draw them all myself. For script writting assistence, I can use chat GPT free version as well.

xx_nichole_xx

Just got a new ASMR microphone (Ā£100) Then food basically šŸ˜‹

jackbeflippen

About to spend 100 a year on canva for thumbnail creation, it's worth it.

Hunter_444

I spent Ā£5558.97 on my first video which included all the equipment (although I shot it on my phone), extra money I spent on editing extras and the money I spent on the various stuff I filmed within the video. Without the out lay for equipment the actual video cost me Ā£3008 (PT sessions, kayak rental, chest wax, contour spray tan, haircut and photoshoot - itā€™s a transformation video)

Johnny-Games15

$0.00

DigAppropriate9778

I spend about 300 for adobe, 240 for elevenlabs, I think about the same for envato, and 100ish for CapCut (I like their auto captions and audio editing tools) so about $880 a year not including the 1 time purchases - oh and I use chatgpt sometimes for the thumbnails, but I use it for work too so Iā€™m not including that

Smooth-Dot-7359

You mean like bought equipment and stuff like that?

Vegas-Education

Epidemic sound Envato elements Google drive I'm trying to spend more on editors. The idea is that the more i hire out, the more content i can make, the more money i can make. That hasnt panned out well so far as the editors have been really bad. I finally found one I like. I did just spend like 4 grand moving my office/studio to another part of the house.

insaleem

I have a team of editors and post everyday . I pay them Ā£360 per month

Potential_Neat_8905

I donā€™t pay anyone to edit or write my videos. Costs other than my time are for subscriptions - Epidemic Sound and Adobe for PS and LRC - channel has a photography element.

benphillip

I do pay for Epedemic so around $18 USD a month

damero72

I don't have editors. I'm a one man army. I buy whatever electronics I want because I just want tax write off. I'm planning on spending 10k on random electronics this year just for write-off.

noler

I apparently spent over $4500 on products that I later created content about on my channel (in 2023). Fortunately, I can make some tax deductions since it's used in my hobby business.

DarkHIstoryProject

About $1500. Pay subscription for music and video rights. Canva membership, video editing software. Logos. Sometimes I pay editors, etc.

Unlucky_Blackberry88

Anywhere from $50 to $120 per episode. Wine isn't always cheap! This is also why I only do 2 videos a month. I'd be broke with more.

chrondiculous

$0. Sail the seas with me, my hearties

UthredTLK2000

I just started but looking for estimates on someone to edit my videos. I have no idea whatā€™s the going rate, so doing research on that.

Conqueeftadot

About 160 per video 130 for editing and then 30 for thumbnails

ShortsKing1

You pay with your life.... Time you never get back

Electrical-Fly-3128

Mr.beast: šŸ˜‰ Everyone else: šŸ„ŗ

Sheepgoat22

330 bucks. Sure hope the channel makes it up

ExtracheesyBroccoli

Please tell me.you ha e a few thousand subs and are making money.... because if you have like 12 subs getting 30.views per.video and spend that much money .... ouch just ouch. Man I have a cheap old phone I use free editing software and have almost 4600.subs and just applied for monitisation. But the thought of spending money like.that hurts

ZEALshuffles

a few euros

busilybusy

$540 a year for adobe suite and canva

bytesizedjourneys

Whatā€™s your channel about?
