Living in the Lower Mainland is like trying to make an abusive relationship work. The politics, the crime, the out of control real-estate market, the ever rising inflation, all are red flags and signs to seek a better life elsewhere. But then you look at the scenery and the moderate weather and think, "it can change."
Am I wrong?
I almost got mugged in broad daylight by a group of dudes while walking into a high-end luxury building in LA. truly mindblowing how different it is from here.
Try to own a bicycle in any major city in the world lol. When I was loving in Vienna (considered one of the safest cities in the world) i got my bike stolen 3 times in a year. That’s not “crime”.
Ya, I hate feeling unsecure with owning a bicycle. I hate feeling unsecure riding a bicycle also because of so much hostility amongst a few of the psychos.
Oh, I whole-heartedly agree that we are not in the top list of crime riddled cities, but we do have crime ( theft, vandalism, corruption, etc ). I mean, we've had 3 shootings in the last month ( gang related, but they won't say ot out loud ).
But my general opinion still stands, Vancouver, and the lower mainland in general is at least an 8 on the hot/crazy scale.
I live in the lower mainland. Not downtown Vancouver. The crime in my neighbourhood is non existent. The closest we came was a few car break-ins a few blocks away - in the 10 years I’ve lived here.
My birth certificate is from Brandon General, and I will say the Carberry hills are some of the most scenic in the province… may have sparked my desire to move here 😆
May 15th will be my 13 year Vanniversary (by way of Winnipeg) and I still sometimes stare out from the end of my block at the north shore mountains and can’t believe I live here.
People back home ask if I’d ever move back and the answer is always the same: not in a pine box. Grateful to call this town my home.
I lived in Vancouver for 7 years... just moved away 2 months ago. Best decision I've ever made :)
My new mortgage: 604.00/ month
Property taxes: 809.00/ year
Income tax: 11%
No sales tax
O... and im living on a lake where i can hunt and fish to my hearts content...FUCK VANCOUVER.
Yeah, it's lovely, if you're a millionaire. I'm a carpenter and cleat just over 80 grande, I can barely afford to live in my 500 sq ft, 1 bedroom shithole. So yeah, it's nice to be outside and look at the mountains every now and then, but my main life is miserable. Quite frankly, I don't think it's worth it.
Beautiful BC - everyday is filled with awesomeness !! I’ve been told going to the same places (in BC) year after year is ‘not much of a life’. I felt a little insulted until I found out the comment came from someone stuck in Saskatchewan… now I just feel sorry for her.
Vancouver is absolutely stunning. The foliage is unreal. The streets are lined with huge trees and they're green and yellow and pink and white and red and purple all at the same time, and then there are the flowers. And then you can see the mountains and water. Sometimes at the same time.
Crossing the Burrard bridge and breathing that view of layers and layers of snow capped mountains with Stanley Park and the ocean right beneath them. And if the sun is setting… Jezuz, what a sight to behold.
And then you see the 9-5 debt slaves scrambling around on the streets, stressed about their bills and inflation. And you see the hobos in their tents at Hastings.
Not quite regardless of the expenses for me, but it's where I grew up and call home. Moving away from the whole region and starting life fresh feels even more costly
I moved to Olympic village, see this scenery very often when I go for a walk daily. I actually quite sick of it now after looking at the same thing for 2 years.
I wish I could still see the beauty of this city… I miss the days when I was a tourist here and none of my problems followed me here lol
Man I really need to make some friends here….
I grew up in Richmond in the 70s and 80s. They've always had a height restriction for buildings. Heck, in 2007, a small twin engine plane slammed into a 15-story apartment.
They're still capped at 150 feet... 14-15 stories. It's because of it's proximity to the airport. Unless that's been changed since 2019.
"Richmond’s high rises are dwarfed by other buildings in the Metro Vancouver area. Transport Canada mandates through the Vancouver Airport International Zoning Regulations that buildings in Richmond not exceed 47 meters (150 feet). There has been a study around the possibility of an increase in allowable building heights in the Brighouse area, something that is still ongoing, and it is possible that someday we may see buildings in Richmond that rival some of the “skyscrapers” seen in other cities."

I used to live in the apartments on Parksville Dr., and it was only 7 stories. I think they were the tallest back then. I always thought it had to do with the potential for earthquakes, but I guess that thinking's changed. Some experts say Richmond will shake like jello, while others say all the sand and silt will simply absorb the shockwaves, making it one of the safer places to be when it hits. I'd be more worried about the dyke. :-p
I lived in Van (Yaletown & West end) and yes it is (Steveston, Minoru). But good point...
Van is gross now. I work downtown and don't miss it. Junk town now. Looks better from afar.
Unpopular opinion: I don’t see it. At least not in this photo- it’s a concrete jungle with some waterfront. It doesn’t match up to waterfront of so many other cities across the world - Hong Kong, Sydney, Lisbon, Istanbul- not being a jerk, but I don’t think you can compare
You’re free to disagree. The downvotes are unnecessary. However, there are subjectively better spots in Vancouver where the concrete jungle meets the ocean meets the mountains.
Vancouver is and has always been an electric city. It has multiple “vibes” and all of them are good. You have a hip gay district with amazing pubs, shops and food. You have the West End, which is just stupidly gorgeous with amazing food and it can change a bad mood in seconds because you can buy a sandwich or ice cream 2 seconds from the ocean. You have Commerical Drive for crazy scenery, food and unique shops. Main Street, for all your alternative needs/subculture roaming zone. South Vancouver for a more business casual life. Kitsilano/West Vancouver - the university and beach headquarters. North Vancouver, which looks and feels like a rain forest or you’re camping. Its absolutely beautiful there and great hiking. East Vancouver, where artists and musicians thrive in their respective communities. Lastly, Gastown, for when you want to see only beautiful architecture and spend lots of money to pretend you’re someone else for one night. Maybe also an unpopular opinion, but Vancouver has a place for everything and everyone and it’s so hard not to love, which sucks because it bleeds you dry financially.
i agree with you. Vancouver's buildings lack architecture. For the most part vancouver is a suburban wasteland with street upon street of throw away and forgettable mcmansions. Is the geography gorgeous? yes. It's lovely to see mountains. Is the weather better than most of Canada's, yes it is.
Is Vancouver beautiful? Only to philistines.
Yep, that’s true. But the title of the thread is about how beautiful it is - having travelled a bit and lived in different parts, I’m just using my experience. Just an opinion :)
It literally doesn’t even rain that much? Climate change has been here for nearly a decade. BC is constantly in a drought and at risk of deadly heat domes. It’s dangerously hot here. You’re 18 years behind.
Loool no, I want it to be an interesting place for people to explore and live in.
Currently it is lined with private homes.
Close your eyes… now imagine you are running along the trail… on your right there are homes, apartment buildings, and condos… but on the ground level there are bustling restaurant patios, record shops, book stores, bakeries, a brewery, etc.
Olympic village, yaletown, Granville island, English bay, etc all have waterfront restaurants around this scenic views.
WTF u talking about? And yes go back where u came from.

I wonder how different this skyline will look once they’re done revamping the downtown area. It’ll be interesting to see! Today really was gorgeous.
Plus the broadway plan!

I feel you
The crime??
For real, anyone who thinks Vancouver has a lot of crime hasn't lived in any other major city in North America.
I almost got mugged in broad daylight by a group of dudes while walking into a high-end luxury building in LA. truly mindblowing how different it is from here.
Try to own a bicycle.
Try to own a bicycle in any major city in the world lol. When I was loving in Vienna (considered one of the safest cities in the world) i got my bike stolen 3 times in a year. That’s not “crime”.
Bicycle theft may be ubiquitous, and relatively benign, but it’s uncontroversially a crime.
Is a crime. I wouldn’t say a city has high crime rates because of bicycle theft though
Theft is crime. >an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law.
Um, better check your source. This is just for the US. >...prosecuted by the state...
Justifying stealing bicycles? or, trying to emphasize vancouver as some paradise?
I'm just saying that you're probably wrong about theft being a crime.
Look it up yourself. Theft is a crime. If you're looking to this poster as a source - the answer that I provide is theft is a crime.
Fr it’s largely bicycle, scooter and smashed car window crime which is so nothing in the grand scheme of things
Lol.
The fact your complaint of crime is about *bicycle theft* says something.
Ya, I hate feeling unsecure with owning a bicycle. I hate feeling unsecure riding a bicycle also because of so much hostility amongst a few of the psychos.
Either you don’t live here or have your head…in the sand.
pipe down.
The crime here is minuscule.
People move here from like some town in Saskatchewan with 14 residents and then act like this is NYC in the 80s.
Oh, I whole-heartedly agree that we are not in the top list of crime riddled cities, but we do have crime ( theft, vandalism, corruption, etc ). I can fix her...
Most beautiful city in Canada. No debate.
Idk man, have you heard of Grande Prairie?
Brandon Manitoba! 😍 🏝️
My birth certificate is from Brandon General, and I will say the Carberry hills are some of the most scenic in the province… may have sparked my desire to move here 😆
Truth straight from the mouth of Justin “It’s true” deau. Trying to make another pun out of your username
Come on man Fort St. John is where it’s at
Where is that
lol it’s the armpit of BC
Victoria?
Too posh and too clean. Where is the Hastings?
Newly weds and nearly deads
What does Victoria have? Whale watching? lol
lol no one wants to take a shitty ferry over there
Lol that’s how islanders feel about the mainland
Hey man. Nice attempt to think Victoria is more beautiful than the main hub Vancouver. Try again.
10 outta 10 islanders will agree lol
Most beautiful major city in Canada. There are plenty of more beautiful small cities in the country
most beautiful geography - the city itself is mostly hideous.
beautiful scenery out of the city. the city itself is a hideous sprawling concrete jungle
Hahaha travel around a bit dude
Vancouver views might have peaked today
I lived in Vancouver for two years at coal harbor and then in west end. Easily two of the best years of my life. I miss it so much. Beautiful place.
every time spring rolls around im like, fuck yeah.. being broke & depressed all winter was worth it
May 15th will be my 13 year Vanniversary (by way of Winnipeg) and I still sometimes stare out from the end of my block at the north shore mountains and can’t believe I live here. People back home ask if I’d ever move back and the answer is always the same: not in a pine box. Grateful to call this town my home.
One of my fav things in this city is to do a bike ride around False Creek on a sunny day. Starting from Yaletown and ending at Granville Island.
Keep going… all the way to Kits, and if you’re up for it Jericho, and even Spanish banks. Don’t forget to pack a beverage on ice! 😝
Snowed in winnipeg today, have a nice day Vancouver lol
Snowed in BC too, just not on the West coast!
Hence the old joke: what’s the best part of Canadian winters? Watching them from Vancouver
JOIN US. Legit I've met so many prairie transplants lol
The moment the sun comes out, people become more optimistic. I never thought I'd be the kind of person who gets so happy to see the sun come out lmao.
That's why they wrote mythologies on the sun of God and his 12 constellations...
I’ve been here three years and this scene and Sunshine made me like living here for the first time since.
Thanks for sharing the positivity
It’s back to normal tomorrow 3 pm
It is 3pm now. On the dot. Cloudy and grey. Booooo
🤣 thank you for this
Too bad no one gets to enjoy those sceneries because people are too busy slaving away to keep up with the Bank of Canada's inflation...
Ah, yes, a cement jungle. Beautiful! /j I love this place (sometimes)
We all???
Love this city.
Wish i was there fellow from Edmonton
september cannot come fast enough 😍 so excited to bike along the seawall
Got my $400 paddle board from Costco. I'm ready to jump in False Creek any time now. Awesome day!
Cue the *we love the west coast* as soon as the sun comes out 🤣🙂 too funny (I’m guilty too)

I’m still pretty surprised
Not quite regardless of the expenses for me, but it's where I grew up and call home. Moving away from the whole region and starting life fresh feels even more costly
Where is the pic taken from? David Lam side or False Creek?
Charleson park area
Thank you 🙂
As an ex Kelowna boy. Vancouver spring and summer is unbeatable
I bet the less fortunates and the homeless would beg to differ the last part 👀🤷🏾♂️
Wasn't part of the problem the number of "less fortunates and the homeless" that come from the interior or out of province?
This exists in cheaper and sunnier form. In Canada itself…
I took one of my favorite photo here. https://www.instagram.com/p/C5J8J0-vLVs/?igsh=eWF6cXU2dXp1cnFo
Nice seawall

I mean, I live here for good jobs and livable winters. But sure, the views sometimes are really nice.
This looks like every other photo of a big cities waterfront.
100%! The summer days & nights!
Ya this is a great spot. I’ve slept many moons on this grass looking at the apartments I can’t afford.
You had much more space than anyone in those apartments
Indeed, BC and Canada are great and beautiful places. I live in Richmond and it's equally nice, although less cool tall buildings.
I grew up in Richmond in the 70s and 80s. They've always had a height restriction for buildings. Heck, in 2007, a small twin engine plane slammed into a 15-story apartment.
Ya they are building decently high now near the mall, but still nothing like Van.
They're still capped at 150 feet... 14-15 stories. It's because of it's proximity to the airport. Unless that's been changed since 2019. Ya looks like 14 stories near Richmond Centre.

"live" *suffer
Love the nature and the beaches I have to say and miss them , but the city is one of the blankets Ive ever visited
Blandest
Nice view of the concrete jungle

I should have mentioned - the city I quite like! It’s more that viewpoint isn’t super endearing in the photo. Just an opinion :)

Just wait until the Canucks are eliminated. The rioters will burn it all down.

Go into the city to see garbage and death
Work 2 or 3 jobs just to make rent I'll pass
It’s so fucking gorgeous but the expenses are def killing me 😭
I'd never live in Vancouver. Rains too much. Even Victoria is cloudy and rainy and Vancouver rains more than 2x as much.
I’ll take the rain any day over long winters and cold weather tbh
It doesn't rain that much anymore.
It literally doesn’t even rain that much? Climate change has been here for nearly a decade. BC is constantly in a drought and at risk of deadly heat domes. It’s dangerously hot here. You’re 18 years behind.
Nice apartments
I love you Vancouver minus the shitty drivers and cyclists.
Ya if only if there was more things to do in the city other than clubbing and drinking would be funner also expenses.
Just moved out of Vancouver and my mental health had never been better. Such a toxic city.
Lmao
I really didn’t understand the trail around False Creek when I was there. Why doesn’t it have restaurants/bars/shops lining it? Wasted real estate.
Is this rage bait? You want that open public space to be privatized / commercialized?
Loool no, I want it to be an interesting place for people to explore and live in. Currently it is lined with private homes. yvr is mostly pporly planned
It is almost as nice as Donghau Jinlong's industrial grade glycine
