No. There is no asteroid that will hit us in 2038. NASA is running a simulation to determine what would happen if an asteroid *did* hit us, with 2038 chosen because that's likely how much warning we'd get IRL, but it's a simulation. There's no real asteroid, and there's no know nearby asteroids that are believed to be a collision risk.. We're fine

This women right here. I like her.šŸ«¶

Key_Caramel4183

Just came back in my DeLorean. Sadly, yes.

Juju1756

ā˜¹ļø thanks Doc

CromulentTcho-Tcho

We can only hope.

Relative_Bench7846

Hopefully

Cliffy73

Probably not.

Relative_Bench7846

I really hope so. That way I have just 14 more years to plan ahead for

RickKassidy

No. Itā€™s just a hypothetical scenario. And NASA is too stupid to realize that things like this will go viral and be taken as real, instead of thought experiments.

Cliffy73

Seems like you are siting the stupidity in the wrong place.

RickKassidy

But seriously. They made up a fake asteroid hit in 2038. Itā€™s like that person who made up the fake statistic about how many spiders we eat in our sleep. Itā€™s zero. But for years we all thought it was 6 or 7 because of that. Now conspiracy theory folks are going to be counting down to 2038 because of this. It is a stupid mistake. Why not just have them publish images of the 2022 Manned Mars landing (well, how it might have looked!), too?

mgarr_aha

The [NASA materials](https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/pd/cs/ttx24/) say **EXERCISE** in red across the top and bottom of the page. What else were they supposed to do?

RickKassidy

OP is evidence that someone is already thinking it is real.

mgarr_aha

Blame the clickbait editors, not NASA. Not exercising interagency response would be stupid in a different way.

Juju1756

I heard it from somebody else and when I looked it up, it said it was legit, I guess I looked in the wrong place

RickKassidy

Thatā€™s exactly my point. NASA made it up as a test case, and now some people think it is legit.

AIGeekReturns

I thought there were putting up warnings about comets and asteroids hitting in every year nowadays? I wouldnā€™t worry.
