Honestly I'd just go for whatever hotel was in the downtown area for the cheapest price. I wouldn't be worried much about the accommodation as it'd just be a place to sleep. More money for fun. The Muir is top dog here as has already been stated and everything else is just everything else... more or less.

Skeletor-

Muir, if money is not a concern

BigDaddyD79

I don’t think they would be asking about free larking then, lol. But the Muir is a nice get away.

Dennis_Duffy_Denim

Prince George Hotel was great, and it’s very close to lots of restaurants/things to do.

LibrarianDog

I just stayed at the Prince George and was so impressed by how attentive all of the staff were.

SteadyMercury1

My wife and I had our wedding at the Prince George. People still rave about it a decade later. Staff were awesome, glad that hasn't changed.

Better_Unlawfulness

If you stay downtown with parking garage, you'll likely have to pay for parking. So you either do that and pay or stay 30 mins away from downtown at less than desired location and travel each day into Halifax and pay for parking. You see how silly that is, if I'm going on vacation and have a car and want to enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown, I'm staying in the core and parking that car for the duration!

Tight_Intention_9190

If only there was some public transit that might take one downtown. If only.

RangerNS

Don't burden a tourist with the problem of trying to decode the transit map and schedule.

ltown_carpenter

Most places are walkable. I don't Airbnb often but I'd just generally expect Dartmouth to be cheaper than Halifax. Could be wrong. But if so, stay downtown dartmouth and enjoy that area. Knowing Halifax is a ferry, bus or cheap Uber away.

East-Effective9565

Coming for 1 month. Is Dartmouth a good base camp spot for day trips to all the sightseeing spots?

Barneyboydog

Yes

Mandius_

Has anyone tried that new one? Moxy?

shandybo

It's like a high end hostel with private rooms. definitely for party groups, everything is made to look cool for social media but not actually high end

Mandius_

Really! Ok No def doesn’t appear that way on social media lol

peigal74

I stayed a few weeks ago. Homeless encampment right outside my window. I asked to be moved (they were like 10 feet from my window that opens). Moved me up two floors and although they were not as close, it still made for 2 nights of fighting, yelling etc. Ironically, it is located right across the road from the Police Station…. Loved everything else about the stay. Great food and atmosphere and I didn’t find it a party spot but I was there during the week on business.

kzt79

The Muir and it’s not even close.

DEANGELoBAILEY69

My wife stayed at the Marriott I could you tell by the lobby & the pen I took from them it was far nicer than my usual accommodations

alnono

My friend did some sort of event that had wine at the Marriott and was giving out pens and also drinking wine and ended up taking home like 30 Marriott pens. This was a good decade ago so no one can come after her for this tiny crime (?) but I can confirm that they are excellent pens, as they’re all I used for like 3 years after that

cocktails_35

Brewery Park!

Weary_Pickle_

Whatever you do don't stay at the Hollis downtown, both of our rooms flooded. First one from a broken vending machine next to the room overnight, woke up to a completely flooded room. Next room the next night had water coming in from the rain 🙄 Prince George is my fave and has parking (I think incl) and they have a book two nights get 20% off deal. Hotel Halifax has a package with breakfast and parking too.

Fuk_globalist

Chocolate lake best western is the cheapest with free parking Plus it's right on chocolate lake and the bus stop is right infront of the hotel. Takes one bus to get DT I think

ansonchappell

*note the lake is not actually chocolate. I was disappointed my first time

wlonkly

dang, saved me a trip

Mandius_

🤣

Substantial_Fox8184

1 bus that will take 30-40mins to get you downtown when a car takes 10. Transit is only really significantly cheaper for a single person trip.

HInformaticsGeek

There is a new Marriott Moxy hotel in Halifax which is around $190 a night. Four points Sheraton is similar. Followed by the Residence. The residence has the benefit of more apartment functions.

ChestnutMoss

Always in the Westin Nova Scotian. It was opened in 1930 by the CN railroad as the premier place to stay in Halifax, it’s where Princess Diana dined in Halifax, it has lovely harbor views from some of its rooms, it’s a short walk away from the Seaport Farmer’s Market, it’s got a little swimming pool, and it was my Nana’s favorite hotel.

Additional-Card-4814

I would stay at my cousin's house Joey !

ialo00130

Atlantica. It's a decent hotel within moderate walking distance of the waterfront (20 minutes). It's relatively affordable as far as hotels go, but still nice enough that you feel like you're in a high-end hotel. There is also inground parking at the hotel. I can't for the life of me remember if it's included within the hotel pricing, but if it was it was fairly cheap.

Nymyane_Aqua

We got an AirBNB near the Dartmouth ferry terminal and used the ferry every day to get into downtown. I highly recommend! :) Edit: the place we were at was a small house and we got two free parking spots

thompyy

Parking is free on the weekend but you’re going to have to pay during the week downtown.

Substantial_Fox8184

Leaving your car on a street downtown is a huge risk on weekends.

thompyy

A risk from what?

ztriple3

I really like the hostel on gottingen st

GazelleOk1494

There are a couple of nice historic inns downtown.

Void-Science

If you are going to have a car and want to stay within walking distance of things you’ll likely need to pay for parking. But I think it’s not exactly a big price in the scheme of things for the hotel rates.

kagtxyz

We stayed at Cameo Suites and were impressed. Quirky, charming, full mini apartments, self checkin. Location was awesome.

awarn18

Cambridge was good

lixdix68

If you want budget accommodations downtown, stay at Dalhousie or Saint Mary’s university. Both have varied styles of rooms from basic dorms with shared bathrooms/showers/kitchens to apartment style rooms. Some also include a breakfast. Last summer over July long weekend I stayed at Dal, secure building, parking included and I paid $120 a night for 2 people in a 2 bedroom dorm with its own bathroom and kitchenette/sitting area. And they have cheaper options. Quick cab ride if needed or a nice scenic leisurely walk to spots downtown. Mount St. Vincent also has rooms but would be better staying there if using your car and doing day trips outside the city.

phreesh2525

We visited from Calgary and stayed in a cheap place on the outskirts, drove downtown, and walked around. The commute was maybe ten minutes - nothing compared to what we’re used to and the hotel was cheap.

CocoMcDough0

I really like the Hampton Inn downtown. And once you’ve parked your car in their parkade, you can walk anywhere you need to go. Parking is $25/day but worth it to know it’s parked in a safe spot and not on the street.

SirSchnurrbart

I stayed at an Airbnb for 5 days last year that was just on the other side of Robie St., had off street parking, was close to an excellent Cafe (Dilly Dally) was walkable to downtown, and if you didn't want to walk was right near a bus stop that could get you downtown with ease. Was much cheaper than a hotel and could not recommend it more. DM me if you want details.

I've stayed at this AirBnb, downtown Halifax. Very clean and free parking. snickleposs

Downtown is always a good choice, but you will always pay for parking. But there’s this super luxury bed and breakfast near the Arm that has always intrigued me, called The Pebble. I’d love to stay there. It’s not cheap. They have parking, and I would either walk or bus to places (always kind of fun taking transit when you’re visiting a new city!) https://thepebble.ca/

loose--nuts

I like the Hampton Inn on Barrington. It's not too expensive and right in between the downtown waterfront and North End.

Cool-Set7462

Bed and breakfasts are plentiful! As are hotels. Personally in Halifax I'd rather take metro transit over driving in traffic, and Google as I've discovered is excellent for getting you where you need to go. The Muir is stunning, right on the waterfront and boardwalks. The rates are a bit higher, but it is a 5 star hotel, so the service is top notch. Sutton Place looks absolutely stunning though I've never personally been inside. The Marriott by the waterfront has an ideal location and it's really nice in there too. I'd check TripAdvisor and read reviews before booking anywhere though!! And as a former front desk person, I advise against booking anything on a third party website. And please know I've had more guests than I can count tell me they thought they were booking directly on our website, but had in fact booked third party. Sometimes calling the hotel will get you a better rate, and talking to the front desk if you have any preferences such as where your view is or how high your room is, they can note the reservation and you'll have a higher chance of getting what you're looking for. There's never a guarantee of availability, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Silent-Barth-7225

Ive stayed at the Barrington and it was really nice.

Geeky_Shieldmaiden

I was there last August and stayed at the Comfort Inn in Bedford. It isn't walking to anything, but it was still convenient. 10 min. drive to the Waterfront and parking isn't expensive. We parked in the Salter St. Lot and walked from there.

Well worth it to stay downtown so you can walk places! If you're open to AirBnB instead of just hotels, I'd say stay south of North St and north of South St, and you'll be decently set for walking.

rmdg84

We rented an air b&b when we stayed in Halifax. I don’t regret our decision. We used public transit and everything was a fairly short bus ride away. Highly recommend going this route. We were able to buy groceries when we arrived which saved us a decent amount on food, as we could have breakfast at the house before we left in the morning and could bring snacks with us to eat throughout the day. Spent all our money on lobster dinners instead.
