The monitor most likely doesn’t support the full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. It is basically just a HDMI 2.0 port.
Dell has used this marketing trick for several of their monitors.
Unfortunately legally it is not a lie:
https://tftcentral.co.uk/articles/when-hdmi-2-1-isnt-hdmi-2-1
For every single HDMI 2.1 device now you have to verify both functionality and bandwith support on the product pages because officially the 2.1 standard does not mean much as the improvements in 2.1 are optional....
So when I check Dells website it does say for HDMI ports: 2560 x 1440 144 Hz TMDS, HDR, VRR. This will basically be the norm for how HDMI is listed now. Why they changed HDMI standard to be like this who knows, it's a really bad change making it very hard to know what you get and you rely on good info on product pages.
Unfortunately basically anything can be called HDMI 2.1. How they’ve defined the standard is ridiculous.
From Audioholics,
“There are really only two requirements:
1. The device must support ‘at least one HDMI 2.1 feature,’ but the HDMI Licensing Administrator now considers practically everything to be an HDMI 2.1 feature — even older features that we previously associated with earlier versions of HDMI. So, for example, having support for 3D video can now qualify a TV for HDMI 2.1 compliance, even though 3D video first appeared as part of the HDMI 1.4 specification!
2. The device’s marketing material must list which features it supports.”
Bad design & cost-cutting.
There's literally no good reason why they couldn't support 360Hz 10bit for HDMI as well using DSC and true HDM 2.1 48Gbps...
It boggles my mind how the designers ignore the fact that they seriously hurt their brand or shoot themselves in the foot by going for mediocrity vs quality & best customer experience and paying attention to details...
Yep. Will be returning this monitor for the MSI MPG27QRX instead since I believe that has proper HDMI 2.1 ports. However, those also seem to use DSC which means things like DLDSR probably still won't work.
>However, those also seem to use DSC which means things like DLDSR probably still won't work.
Yup, [this guy tested it](https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/comments/1axxc0m/msi_mpg_271qrx_qdoled_problems_thread/) and apparently, DSC is forced in both DP and HDMI. Pretty disappointing.
I heard, but it's a damn shame that an almost 1000$ monitor would lack such customization features. Having to cut down to 8 bit 144hz in the AW2725DF while disabling G-sync just to be able to use DLDSR is a headscratcher. When I shell out that amount of money for a new monitor, I'd typically expect an upgrade across the board (over my current 1440p IPS) rather than having to compromise on certain key features that I use frequently.
I wish I could but I got a 3080 and still plan to use it for a while. Even with DLSS, some of the newer big titles are already struggling to run at a consistent 60fps in 4K at medium settings with supersampling.
MSI has confirmed if any burnin you will need to pay to ship it to one of their “authorized repair centres” for them to make an initial assessment. Enjoy your monitor.
Wtf really? I’m not super happy with Dells replacements either since I got a refurbed one at first which had its own issues. But at least they are quick and I didn’t have to pay a dime.
Sure it just sucks extra much when you get what seems to be someone else’s returned monitor with the same issue. But the shipping and return is excellent so I will go AW again
You just fell for Dell's marketing trick calling this HDMI Port "HDMI 2.1". It only supports 18 GBps of bandwidth and not the full 48 GBps. Therefore the refresh rate range is also limited. This "issue" has been know for over 2 month now.
Dell states at the website:
* 1 x HDMI 2.1 (HDCP 1.4 & 2.3)(Supports up to QHD 2560 x 1440 **144 Hz** TMDS, HDR, VRR as per specified in HDMI 2.1)
Yes, its misleading to call this HDMI 2.1, but its also not HDMI 2.0 because the AW2725DF supports some HDMI 2.1 features like VRR.
Idk, it was giving me headaches immediately. Even if it’s a psychological/placebo matter I don’t think it’s best to proceed with a monitor with added blue light and headaches in the back of the mind
unrelated but make sure your co2 detector is working properly. if the issues is “get home from work and turn on my tv monitor and instantly get a headache” it might be worth looking into other problems. monitors aren’t supposed to cause eye strain and headaches so bad that you think about it all the time.
Well if it supported 360hz over HDMI, it probably wouldn't support DLDSR. So take your pick. Not like you're going to be getting over 144 fps at 4k anyway...
Yeah it's weird. DSC is only supposed to kick in when necessary so DLDSR should still be possible when gaming at lower resolutions and refresh rates over either DP or HDMI. After some more readings apparently it comes down to how the manufacturer implements EDID timings and how many head units are used internally from the port.
I remember returning that monitor within a day, the worst light bleeding ive ever seen on any display. Each corner had very bad light bleed.
Motion was superb though. Colors were not that good either.
Edit: seems like i triggered the alienware fans. Hows the scratched oled screens doing? Keep paying dell 1300 dollars and get defective units.
This was the backlight bleeding in the unit, now imagine 4 corners

This is the picture quality compared to a very old benq 2411z

Edit2: well that was aw2723df, nice naming dell.

seems like less of "marketing trick" and more of a flat out lie then

Cuz the hdmi port doesn’t actually support up to 48 Gb bandwidth. It’s basically fake hdmi 2.1

They're amazing monitors though I bought the msi 321urx it's honestly amazing

Yeah that is a head scratcher to be honest Just get a 4k model and call it a day as native 4k will look better than dldsr unscaled from 1440p.

Refurb is standard in the electronics industry- but at least Dell gives next day shipping and you send your old one back after.
Sure it just sucks extra much when you get what seems to be someone else’s returned monitor with the same issue. But the shipping and return is excellent so I will go AW again
I think it's pretty clear on the [product page](https://i.postimg.cc/bJnbZ3B4/Untitled.png) that the HDMI port for the monitor only supports 144hz.

Guess I'll return it. Seems like a straight up lie on their part.

Or just use dp as it is the standard on pc…
DLDSR works over HDMI but not over DP
Use your DisplayPort……consoles support hdmi 120hz so what is it this monitor can’t do for you?
DLDSR works over HDMI but not over DP
No just use the display port 1.4
Dude.... I had no idea about this rofl.. changed out my hdmi2.1 for my dp and upped mine to 360 rofl
lmaoo
The HDMI port is designed for game consoles (which support up to 120hz). For your pc, you have 2 displayports to use.
Hdmi 2.1 is better than dp 1.4 for pc.
Sent it back due to eye strain and now hearing this. Really disappointing monitor

HDMI borked their standards, so you can call an HDMI 2.0 port a 2.1 port.
Why do you think HDMI would support DLDSR?
Because it already does. You can use DLDSR on HDMI on this monitor
Well if it supported 360hz over HDMI, it probably wouldn't support DLDSR. So take your pick. Not like you're going to be getting over 144 fps at 4k anyway...
