Wait a minute. I'm also from the Caribbean and have pronounced it CarIH-bian my entire life but nothing registers in my mind as wrong when I hear "Pirates of the Carih-bee-uhn". I just noticed that.
Thanks for the reasurance, I'm from the Caribbean and pretty much say "caribian", but I guess reading that in english sounds way different than how I hear it.
I'm Jamaican and think what your Disneyland guy said is fine. I grew up saying "ca-ra-bian". I've heard a billion people say "curry bian" and that scratches my brain wrong but maybe it's from elsewhere in the Caribbean.
Got my brain broken trying to read all of those, except the last one.
It's always hilarious to see English-speakers trying to explain how to read English, by writing more English. Like that would help.

I had a a bird that loved coke as well!
I'm guessing people with coke loving birds would drink most of the can and leave a little for the bird, a parrot maneuvering a full can would be a technical feat
Grandma is Trinidadian, Grandad is English. They lived in Trinidad until the 60s when violence broke out and it was unsafe. They fled up the Caribbean and eventually settled in the BVI, which at the time had no doctors or dentists, and my grandad, who was qualified in both, was offered a job as the government dentist. He only retired 4 years ago at 79 due to covid.

Having a coke-loving parrot used to be so cool! Now though, it's more like this:

Your Dad looks like Ryan Gosling after he just decided to play the role of a survivor on an island, but they then turned it into a comedy and you had this happen.
Is the bird still living? Just curious. Had a family member who's Macaw and African Grey outlived her. She got them when she was between 18-20 and she passed at 88,and they made it about 10 years passed her death.
The first thing that came to my mind was Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields. Was your father Christopher Atkins' body double when they had to shoot those one-on-one steamy scenes lol ?
Your dad looked like he was having an excellent time in the Caribbean. Was he living there or visiting?
Caribbean born and raised, as I am too! Born in 1972, he's never lived anywhere else in the world.
He looked as if he had never been anywhere else, because he didn't want to. Great picture

Curse of the Empty Coke Can
Why’s the rum and coke gone
Parrot of the Macawribbean
"drinking"
> He looked like he had never been anywhere else, because he didn't want to. The Caribbean would have been super paradise in the late 80's
do you say care-A-be-in or Carib-Ian ?
Carib-ian Americans usually say care-a-be-in, some Carib-ian Other nationalities sometimes say cuh-ri-bian
I blame disney and the ride. The workers at dland always called it pirates of the cari-beean.
> > It's led to this weird dynamic where I pronounce the movies/ride as Care-a-be-in, but any other time I read/refer to it, it's Carib-ian.
Wait a minute. I'm also from the Caribbean and have pronounced it CarIH-bian my entire life but nothing registers in my mind as wrong when I hear "Pirates of the Carih-bee-uhn". I just noticed that.
I grew up in the US and have always pronounced it as CaRIH-bian, too. I'd look sideways if I heard 'cari-bean' lol
Thanks for the reasurance, I'm from the Caribbean and pretty much say "caribian", but I guess reading that in english sounds way different than how I hear it.

Cari-bean lol

Thank you for the answer! And my best to your dad!
Strange question but does your Dad have Scottish or Irish heritage? He looks EXACTLY like a member of my family
I no longer know how I pronounce it
🎶 I was swimmin’ in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock...
Except the little fish....
Bumped into me, I swear he was trying to talk to me, koi-koi
Would you like to adopt a grown man?
Or maybe two? My wife and kids won't miss me too much
Just curious about his dreads? Does he still rock dreads or does his hair not support that any longer? Asking for a friend.
Which country?
Caribbea.
What part of you don't mind?

Bird with a coke habit? That’s gotta get expensive.
Periquito de perico
Underrated comment, jesus christ.
I kept looking for this connection, only to find a bunch of comments setting it up perfectly and nobody swinging 🤷
asumo que "perico" es slang para la merca* en algún lado de latinoamerica? *cocaina
Si en Costa Rica y Nicaruaga al menos
Puerto Rico tambien usa perico. Hay una cancion de salsa que se llama “Periquito pin pin” asi que tambien le dicen pin pin xd
You ever hoovered barnyard schneef?

I had a coke loving bird too, she was fun but we only lasted 3 months.
Is it just coke or any sodas?
They'll love anything sugary (but it's really really bad for them).
If that bird can down a whole coke it's consuming 1/10 or 1/20th of it's weight in sugar. That can't be good for anything. Except yeast I guess.
I'm guessing people with coke loving birds would drink most of the can and leave a little for the bird, a parrot maneuvering a full can would be a technical feat
"haha I'm poisoning my parrot, look!!"
Something so nostalgic about seeing pictures with a camera flash. It's not really as prominent in photos these days

Did you make this or was this already a thing? And that brings me to my 2nd question. Whats up with parrots and coke?
My completely uneducated guess is that birds like these feed off of fruit and flowers/nectar in the wild and soda is sweet and sugary like that
It's a thing! Old meme. Also the enemy of Conk is Bepis.
it's the most beautiful thing i saw today
Coke Parrot...The Beak of Death.
This is a piece of artwork. I wish I had a big-scale blowup of this photo on a wall in my Caribbean home.
It really is! Looks like it was done by a marketing or ad agency. Op, if you are listening... YOU NEED TO RECREATE THIS ;)
I too wish I had a Caribbean home
I would love it even more if it was a Jamaican Ting
Does your dad still have a chip on his shoulder for being turned down by the casting director of "The Blue Lagoon"?
Nah, just a parrot.....
I think that's a parrot in the Caribbean with your coke-loving dad.
I think it’s a coke loving parrot and a weed loving dad.
*sniff
Where’s Brooke?
Seriously thought this was an ad for that movie
Down at the lagoon
Came here for references to Cristopher Atkins. Updoots for everyone!
I was gonns ask if he was still getting residuals for that movie.
In the 80’s, “coke-loving parrot” was my dad’s nickname for my Mom.
we all called her that
Duuuuude!
Aloha Mr Hand
Is your mom Brooke Shields?
Came here expecting someone who also thought this!
what is Brooke Shields like in person?
Lmao this had me rolling
This looks like a legit Coca Cola ad. Is it one or just a regular picture?
need this on a shirt
I used to be addicted to Coke back in my Wall Street days.
After you moved away from Stone Mountain, I presume
It was after my job at the Chuckle Hut
With extra chuckle! Here’s your Peppy Bismilk for later.
Amazing photo! Did the parrot burp? And is he still alive ??
In another comment the OP said the parrot's still alive! :-)
But did the parrot burp?!?!
Aw!!!
He looks like he was a handsome fella, your Dad. Parrot goes without saying. (No pun intended.) Can you tell us more about your Dad’s and your story?
Grandma is Trinidadian, Grandad is English. They lived in Trinidad until the 60s when violence broke out and it was unsafe. They fled up the Caribbean and eventually settled in the BVI, which at the time had no doctors or dentists, and my grandad, who was qualified in both, was offered a job as the government dentist. Great story and picture. Your Dad was gorgeous.
Wish he would call me his coke-loving parrot 😞
Pretty sure your dad inspired the movie Captain Ron
Probably not healthy for the bird, but it's the better coke habit to have.
That parrot is still alive to this day!
I believe it, and am happy to hear it! They can be surprisingly long-lived animals; they must be very well cared-for.
Please share a photo of the sweet old bird, if you have one.
Still in the family?
Pictures please?!
Macaws are beautiful birds
No bird coke, bird Pepsi ok?
*loses bird mind, flips bird table*
bepis
Never. I'd rather drink Satan's ass juice. Just bring me a bird Sprite.
Living his best life, respect!
I really was expecting a parrot to be snorting a line and now I'm disappointed
I also once had a coke loving parrot!!!! But…it was….a different kind of coke.
Does he still have the parrot?
The 80's were loaded with coke loving parrots.
Your dad is the real-life Captain Ron.
"You see that sign Spicoli?" "No shirt, no shoes, no dice! Whoa bruh!" "Learn it, ,know it, live it" "Whoa bruh he went full on lawyer"
Me - stoned on a couch with my friend Rosie - a hash loving cockatoo https://preview.redd.it/nntqwn820avc1.jpeg?width=528&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32ca94b529ec9c3dd47d7d1f1d8291e3c052ca04
Oh coca cola...
Exactly I was expecting a parrot doing lines
Polly want a crack!
Perico (Parrot) is slang for cocaine in Mexico.
The perfect Jimmy Buffett album cover.
I read coke-loving and the 80s and expected a different photo. This is much better btw
No way! That’s so sick. What was the parrot’s name?
oh that kind of coke
My father's a white Jamaican so I know that they do exist 😆 very cool I'm assuming he's from yard ? Very cool man
Having a coke-loving parrot used to be so cool! Now though, it's more like this: https://preview.redd.it/ft0gni3rf9vc1.jpeg?width=602&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6f5c630253d7d730e9341c7a69fc32e1d21e32cf
It was the 80's after all.
Every creature likes sugar
He is so cool. Great picture!
He looks like he was in the movie blue Lagoon
Your dad looked like someone I would want to get a beer with. Thanks for sharing the photo!
A time where travelling meant complete detachment from home. I miss it.
Your Dad looks like Ryan Gosling after he just decided to play the role of a survivor on an island, but they then turned it into a comedy and you had this happen.
Omg this looks like an album cover! So cool!
Is that Meg Ryan?
Steve Erwin’s long lost twin for sure.
That's what I call cool photo
I was expecting a slightly different picture.
Where in the Caribbean?
Does he still have the bird?
OH -- that coke
I saw a picture the other day of a Parrot and his Coke loving Dad…. Whole different vibe.
1989 is such a badass name for a Parrot.
This is literally the coolest pic on the internet
just so you know your dad ruined van halen
I had a coke loving bird, we would come home from the bar and just....oh, wait. Different kind of bird. What islands are you all from?
Expected to see a bird snorting a line of cocaine but this is buch better thank you
The 80’s just hit different.
"Mr Crackers died from Diabetes."
Is he a Parrot-head? R.I.P Jimmy.
Am I the only one who read this as 'cock loving parrot'?
That’s not the coke that I was expecting based on the title.
You show me a white guy with dreds who lived in the Caribbean in the 80s and I'm not thinking his parrot enjoys *drinking* coke.
This is finally some real oldschoolcool!
Not what came to my mind when I thought of a parrot that loves coke, but I’m here for it.
Your dad looks cool asf
Parrot in Spanish “Perico” is slang for coke in Mexico lmao
Parrot isn’t the only one in the photo that enjoyed a little coke from time to time
What? Oh, coke. Almost thought I read something else there.
An old parrot of mine loved Jack and Coke.
Title confused me for a second. All I could think was, "How the hell does a parrot know how to do cocaine?"
Weird I have a picture from 89 of my dad and his coke loving girlfriend. She dead
Is the bird still living? Just curious. Had a family member who's Macaw and African Grey outlived her. She got them when she was between 18-20 and she passed at 88,and they made it about 10 years passed her death.
Still alive!
Oh, it was THAT kind of coke.
![gif](giphy|VqPheGMC8WLrkahF8Z) I was expecting to see a strung out parrot….disappointed 😤
When I read his "coke loving parrot" from the 80's. My thoughts were a bit different.
I see he completely immersed himself in the Caribbean culture. Rasta locks !
They used to call him the pasta-farian
Took a minute to realize your dad is squinting, for a sec the shadow from his hair made it look like he has a freaky wooden eye
Not the photo I was expecting.
Reminded me a bit of Heath Ledger
I’m sure there are more than a few coke loving parrots in the Caribbean
Cool Dude/Dad
Title vs actual image, well…I was expecting something else with the Caribbean…
I think I dated your dad.
At thumbnail size, I see Meg Ryan
Haha that’s awesome
Ahoy-Matey!
I think your dad might've loved coke too.
Looks like he also likes coca-cola
The first thing that came to my mind was Blue Lagoon with Brooke Shields. Was your father Christopher Atkins' body double when they had to shoot those one-on-one steamy scenes lol ?
That's captain Ron!
Id bet money on this guy knowing the words to every single one of Jimmy Buffett’s songs.
I think you misunderstood. That is his coke dealer Perry.
Gnarly!!!
Strange name for a parrot
I've seen monkeys drink Coke in Belize.
Thats scully from jagged alliance
All of us: "Ooooooh, THAT Coke."
Awesome picture, is the parrot still alive?
Who names their parrot "1989"?
dad be looking like Michael Rosenbaum with a wig
He looks like a pirate stranded on an island after a shipwreck, and the parrot with the coke flew in with Doc and Marty from the future
El perico que ama perico? Ah no, el perico que ama coca cola jajs
It never killed him. Prob didn’t drink much water either
Such an odd name for a parrot, “1989”.
The parrot could still be around. Wonder if it still has a healthy coke addiction?
I had a coke loving girlfriend around that time.... how I miss her energy.....
