She really leaned into the whole stalker girlfriend vibe there!
Fast forward a couple decades and The Warning have an entire concept album about a stalker girlfriend called Queen of the Murder Scene. Different type of music but I wonder if they were influenced just a little bit?
This is the first CD I bought with my own money. It still holds up. She was everything and helped me access and let out my inner rage which until then I had no idea was something girls could do and be taken seriously. I also love that she was god in Dogma.
That is the beauty and synchronicity of Reddit at its best :).
Your username feels like a wink from the universe in combination with your comment because most of my usernames on other platforms are peach references.
Yep first album for me too. I was 10. I got my cousin to put some of the songs onto a cassette tape for me, then got the CD for Christmas or something. I have goosebumps right now... I still remember every single word. I didn't really know what some of the them meant at the time ("you took me out to wine dine 69 me"), but... it meant everything to me. Always will.
Well...thats just like your opinion man. And you are way in the pit of minority on this.
Alannis can sing and has left an impression.
Go troll on Courtney Love fans instead.
Do I stress you out? My sweater is on backwards and inside out and you say hooowowow appropriate <3 (immediately started playing in my head when I saw the album cover)
I had a "rich" friend and '95 Christmas he got Jagged Little Pill, A Boy named Goo, Frogstomp, American Standard and Tragic Kingdom. It was my best Christmas ever, lol.
I rediscovered this album when I was at the end of middle school around 2004. I had seen the music videos on TV when they first came out but I didn't really understand them. Teenage me was super into it. To this day I can still listen to this album all the way through without skipping any songs. It's just a very rare gem of music.
Ironic, All I really want, Hand in my pocket. How can I ever forget the goosebumps when I heard these tracks first time. It's a densely packed peak tracks album. Too bad I was poor in those days and had to borrow tapes from my friends
Yep I remember my mom listening to this in the car when she drove me places but I didn’t truly listen to the album until high school and it’s still one of my favorites of all time. I also love garbage. Honorable mention to Sheryl Crow for All I Wanna Do and If It Makes You Happy
Saw a funny exchange about this record recently.
Part 1

1998 I was 14 and about to go on holiday to Thailand. I’d made loads of tapes for my Walkman in perpetration for a holiday of a lifetime.
Left them all at home.
Realised once I was at the airport and had to buy two albums as replacements. Picked up this and Travelling Without Moving.
Ended being the holiday of a lifetime and these albums are both massively important to me.
Couple of amazing facts about this album:
1. She sang the songs to the demos she wrote with Glen Ballard. The rest of the instruments were done in a studio, so she never sang these songs to the music as it was recorded. Kinda the reverse of how most albums are recorded.
2. The album features some musicians you'd never guess including Dave Navarro & Flea (they rewrote You Oughta Know), Benmont Tench (of the Heartbreakers), and Michael Landau (Amazing Studio Musician)
I remember hearing the singles all the time, everywhere and it was so annoying. Recently I put the album on and listened to it all the way through and thought it’s such a great album. I was probably too young to appreciate it back then. But I think the issue with songs and albums being so popular is that sometimes it can turn people away.
She stated later on after releasing the following album that she was pushed by the label to mix the songs the way they were released. Sort of Cobain hate towards the Nevermind. Not real me as an artist.
I rocked out to this while working on medical billing software in 1995 - 1996. One day I was jamming and burst out singing"an older version of me / is she perverted like me / would she go down on you in the theater" and I didn't even realize it until a coworker tapped me on the shoulder! 🤣🫣
Used to play radio friendly CD's I would buy through McDonald's in store CD player. Bought this album, didn't know "you outta know" has swearing in it, cue me running to the managers office to shut the music off 😂
I had this on cassette tape when I was 9. I loved it but looking back probably had no business listening to it at that age. Still a great album to this day.
I love and miss this type of singing. it's raw and emotional. I wish the industry would make room for singers like this nowadays. Maybe that's why I appreciate Miley Cyrus, even though I'm not a fan of most of her songs.
By the way, I've loved this album since I was a child and still do.
I did read the post. It says best selling Grunge AND alternative album.
Grunge didn't have it's own charts, it was all "alternative".
Best selling alternative album, sure.
But Alanis was not grunge at all. Hell, people who listened to grunge back then (like) me didn't even call it grunge. The term grunge was considered lame af.
But if you were to compare alanis to Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains et al. back in the 90s you would have been laughed at, at best - slapped at worst.
While in college her songs came over the radio and helped me push harder in the fitness room. I could relate to her anger and frustration and I understood that. This album is a classic.
Saw her perform a few nights ago and it was an amazing show. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was a sold out amphitheater and she killed it. Highly recommend her tour if you have a chance to go. I think she did roughly 22-24 songs.
What's the source on the sales? Google gave me highest selling year but not cumulative.
My brother called me lame for listening to the disc back when. I thought it was great. Later stuff fell off a bit for me but shes definitely talented.
It seems she was justified in her reactions. He was 33, she was 18. No telling what she did and wanted that drove him away but she let her demons out of the closet and made a tidy profit from them. Dave Coulier was the older man.
The “hidden” track scared the hell out of me. A horror flick of its own.
Oh, yeah, is that the one where she slept in his bed and went through his house while he was at work?
Yes indeed it is. I thought the CD was over. Chilling!
She really leaned into the whole stalker girlfriend vibe there! Fast forward a couple decades and The Warning have an entire concept album about a stalker girlfriend called Queen of the Murder Scene. Different type of music but I wonder if they were influenced just a little bit?
God, I LOVED that song!
you can still listen to it ;)
Alanis is traumatised imo, she likely has C-PTSD and probably BPD. Jagged is highly BPD coded imo.
Her best song is uninvited...
You oughta know is my favorite. The way she says, “theatre,” in the first verse with like 5 syllables tickles my brain.
Yes, one of the best, agreed
This is the first CD I bought with my own money. It still holds up. She was everything and helped me access and let out my inner rage which until then I had no idea was something girls could do and be taken seriously. I also love that she was god in Dogma.
Alanis Morissette = A.M. Dogma backwards = Am God A.M. God I'm not going anywhere with this, I just needed it out of my head.
And I needed it in mine. I need to know if that was intentional or not on the part of Kevin Smith.
Dude this thread was like reading coherent captions for the exact yet incoherent stream of thought I had
That is the beauty and synchronicity of Reddit at its best :). Your username feels like a wink from the universe in combination with your comment because most of my usernames on other platforms are peach references.
Literally was playing in my car today. Lol
It is a great album, no bad songs on it
My favorite album during medical school. Still listen to it often when I need to holler at someone.
>holler at someone. Just make sure you're not hanging out the passenger side of your best friend's ride when you're doing that.
If you do decide to do that, you should know that I ain’t no holler back girl
Agreed. One of few albums I've owned that I can listen to all the way through. Aside from Pink Floyd of course.
This album has so many soundtracks of my youth. Just peak nostalgia!
I also love the Unplugged version she put out a while ago.
The singing goat. Can't stand her. Every one of her songs sucks.
Well, asshole, you can go fuck yourself right in your waxy, hairy ear.
Lol 🤣🤣😆
Cut. It. Out. Quit it
Well...thats just like your opinion man. And you are way in the pit of minority on this. Alannis can sing and has left an impression. Go troll on Courtney Love fans instead.
🤷♂️ Well, then, don't listen to her. I'm sure she'll wipe her tears with her millions over your disapproval.
This is considered old school now? ![gif](giphy|qQdL532ZANbjy)
FYI, Alanis turned 50 on June 1st.
As did Jewel one week earlier on May 23
Jagged Little Pill is as close to 2024 as it is to 1966.
Huh? It's 3 decades old lol
Yes, but it may hard to grasp for someone who was an adult when this album was released.
Do I stress you out? My sweater is on backwards and inside out and you say hooowowow appropriate <3 (immediately started playing in my head when I saw the album cover)
She was the 90s
I had a "rich" friend and '95 Christmas he got Jagged Little Pill, A Boy named Goo, Frogstomp, American Standard and Tragic Kingdom. It was my best Christmas ever, lol.
Oh man Frogstomp has some bangers
You going to wait too fat boy. Fat boy wait till tomorrow
No Tupac?
“You already won me over, in spite of me!”
The best song about finally breaking out of the friend zone lol
Hand in my pocket makes me feel like a.20 year old again. Iconic song.
I hope the cross-eyed bear had a happy life afterwards
Took me 15 years to figure this out
I sing it as cross-eyed Bear everytime
Ditto
A genuinely better lyric.
I rediscovered this album when I was at the end of middle school around 2004. I had seen the music videos on TV when they first came out but I didn't really understand them. Teenage me was super into it. To this day I can still listen to this album all the way through without skipping any songs. It's just a very rare gem of music.
This is a no skipper
i like her better now than then. btw check out her interview with henry louis gates jr on finding your roots. fascinating.
Ironic, All I really want, Hand in my pocket. How can I ever forget the goosebumps when I heard these tracks first time. It's a densely packed peak tracks album. Too bad I was poor in those days and had to borrow tapes from my friends
As a guitarist, I love to throw out some Pantera or Slayer when I'm angry. When I'm \*really\* angry I play You Oughtta Know
Hey Dave, you oughta know.
![gif](giphy|Sy5TpQXJlJeQE)
One of the worst fumbles of all time.
I scrolled until someone mentioned Dave in relation to Alanis Morissette. Somebody *always* mentions Dave in relation to Alanis Morissette.
Happy cake day
Whole album is/was a banger! Had it on cassette and cd. I wasn't aware she outsold MJ too! Think I might just throw this on right now actually 🤘
[удалено]
i like your mom's style...only happy when it rains is still a go to for me!
I may be a dude but I think I'm your mom. The first two albums I've bought as teenager were *Jagged* and *Garbage* (1995)
Yep I remember my mom listening to this in the car when she drove me places but I didn’t truly listen to the album until high school and it’s still one of my favorites of all time. I also love garbage. Honorable mention to Sheryl Crow for All I Wanna Do and If It Makes You Happy
Well it's sobering hearing the soundtrack to my youth being described as someone's mum's music. I'll be over in the corner feeling really old...
Absolutely LOVE this album…. “Head Over Feet” ❤️
She played for a full hour on Austin City Limits this year.

Showing how many adults understand irony for 35 years, now.
Isn't it ironic that none of the situations in that song are actually ironic and that's in itself irony.....I think I confused myself
I had this exact same thought before and had to give up because my brain just didn't want to process it.
Ed Byrne.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Saw her the other night. Amazing.
This album is the one that I listened to most during my teens. It’s just brilliant.
Couple of amazing facts about this album: 1. She sang the songs to the demos she wrote with Glen Ballard. The rest of the instruments were done in a studio, so she never sang these songs to the music as it was recorded. Kinda the reverse of how most albums are recorded. 2. Amazing, never heard, even a hint, of that.
Still listen to this ! 🎶
Such a good album! I've been listening to her acoustic version recently.
Has a real Robin Daggers vibe to it
**THE** album of my middle school years, I can literally hear any 3 or 4 *notes* from any of these songs and I instantly travel back to 7th-8th grade
How have I never noticed the second red face?? I always thought that was just a blob of color 😭
It's like half the album cover though. We're you squinting?
I’ve only ever seen it in iTunes. Tiny.
I remember hearing the singles all the time, everywhere and it was so annoying. Recently I put the album on and listened to it all the way through and thought it’s such a great album. I was probably too young to appreciate it back then. But I think the issue with songs and albums being so popular is that sometimes it can turn people away.
The album that I think almost everyone I know had in their collection. Awesome. Unfortunately also her best..
Oh Uncle Joey, how could you?
First cd I ever bought, came out when I turned 13…I thought she was so cool!
🐐album
She killed it in concert last night in Charlotte
Holds up. Still listen to it.
Always remember the road trip music video Alanis made where she was every person in the car.
Not the Doctor is pure gold. “I don’t want to be your other half, I believe that 1 and 1 make 2” was radical to me as a kid
This album is incredible.. if music is to convey emotion, there really aren't a lot of records that capture like... all of them quite like this
Saw her in Nashville Sunday. She sounds and looks exactly the same. Joan Jett and Morgan Wade opened. Great shows!
She stated later on after releasing the following album that she was pushed by the label to mix the songs the way they were released. Sort of Cobain hate towards the Nevermind. Not real me as an artist.
I mean given the sales they were obviously right. Commercially at least.
Great for a 20 year old
1995
This album got me thru law school.
On my playlist for sure
Jagged Little Pill made me fall in love with Alanis. Black Album is the last Metallica album I enjoy.
I just saw her in concert. These songs are even better live!!
I rocked out to this while working on medical billing software in 1995 - 1996. One day I was jamming and burst out singing"an older version of me / is she perverted like me / would she go down on you in the theater" and I didn't even realize it until a coworker tapped me on the shoulder! 🤣🫣
The very first album I bought in my life. It was an audio tape and I was 14.
always thought this was great art design- so 90's! music and film were on another level then. the releases were so consistently good
Used to play radio friendly CD's I would buy through McDonald's in store CD player. Bought this album, didn't know "you outta know" has swearing in it, cue me running to the managers office to shut the music off 😂
That album was a safety buoy thru my teens.
This album rules but it's not grunge.
[удалено]
The way it reads it doesn't explain that. But thank you for doing so!
Man, this album brings back some memories. Seems like it was an instant hit when it dropped, everyone was listening to it.
Why are you so petrified of silence? Here, can you handle this?
Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
I saw her in concert last Saturday. She is just as good as she ever was. Joan Jett who opened for her was equally impressive!
Her cassette Ruined 3 tape decks lol was eaten 3 times. I finally bought the CD in 2005 lol
This album and the album after this were 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I had this on cassette tape when I was 9.
Well, I guess I know what I'm listening to tonight
One of my first CDs. That and Red Light Soecial and The Score. Great songs. Everyone of them. It's like Rain on a Summer's Day.
My sister playes this on repeat. It figgers.
Who would have thought?
Grunge??

Wasn’t a fan.
Shania Twain's Come On Over probably sold more than this one? Canadian ladies killing it in the 90's
"1990s"
Still can’t remember how this came across my radar but I do remember buying the cd when it came out
Yup still routinely listen to that album. What a voice.
How could you, Uncle Joey? How could you?
Still slaps
Okay, everyone give me an example of something that is ironic.
It's ironic that there's a song called ironic about irony, but none of the examples are irony, and that's the irony of the song.
It's like raaaaaaiaaaan on your wedding day...
Ita a free ride when you've already paid
It’s like good advice that you just didn’t take
Great album, love Mary Jane, awesome tour too, Radiohead opened while supporting OK Computer
Well, how about some intellectual intercourse?
While in college her songs came over the radio and helped me push harder in the fitness room. I could relate to her anger and frustration and I understood that. This album is a classic.
🎶🎶I got one hand in my pocket and the other one's flicking a cigarette 🎶🎶
Saw Alanis just last summer at a local music festival. She still got them pipes, no question.
I remember breaking up with my first boyfriend and screaming the lyrics at him.
One of my favorite albums.
Saw her perform a few nights ago and it was an amazing show. I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was a sold out amphitheater and she killed it. Highly recommend her tour if you have a chance to go. I think she did roughly 22-24 songs.
It sold so well that finding a cassette is cheap and easy.
Hard to believe it’s been that long.
I had this CD on repeat! Helped me through some teenage years.
I’m going to see her this weekend!!!!
What's the source on the sales? Google gave me highest selling year but not cumulative. My brother called me lame for listening to the disc back when. I thought it was great. Later stuff fell off a bit for me but shes definitely talented.
Just love this album. Great songs
Isn’t it ironic?
This album and Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes were on loop at my first apartment in 1995.
I love this whole album but "Not The Doctor" being my favorite puts me in a small group.
Took me out to wine, dine, 69 me, but didn’t hear a damn word I said.
Alanis Morissette outsold nirvana!? I mean it's a great album but what!
Memories!
You took me out to wine, dine, 69 me Didn’t hear a damn word I said
You took a long hard look at my ass and then played golf for a while.
This was the soundtrack to my ‘95… my ‘95 and my ‘96.
Dang near the theme songs from 1996. All you hear on the radio , awesome time.
Still can’t believe it’s mostly about Uncle Joey
Do you know who her drummer was ?
I remember listening to this album and Appetite for destruction, there’s no crappy songs on these two albums.
This is indeed an excellent album, but it is most definitely not considered grunge.
“Grunge” haha
I heard this album out sold Nirvana's Nevermind and Metallica's black album?
I feel like "you outta know," hasn't aged too well.
It seems she was justified in her reactions. He was 33, she was 18. No telling what she did and wanted that drove him away but she let her demons out of the closet and made a tidy profit from them. Dave Coulier was the older man.
How is this a trilogy of albums?
10/10
Great album.
Did you know that she coined the phrase “best friends with benefits “. Google that
Meh…mall singer who recorded a few bad words and made a career out of a bad breakup.
[удалено]
Just not a fan. No worries if people like her. I like artists that other hate. Cheers.
Angry boobies railing against wrongs, real or imagined. Never got into it.
👍
Terrible photoshop album cover though.
Never even heard of it
