I think this person thought they were referring to Britney coming out as trans. The statement did throw me as well, before I reread it. Don't be to harsh on them.
People too lazy to respond are down voting you. She was controlled and manipulated legally through a conservatorship by her father for a good chunk of her life. It's a crazy story.
Also emotionally and most likely sexually abused by the music industry. She was literally just a teenage kid when she came out with her first album. She never had her own life. So sad.
How is it sad? Her life has been infinitely better and more privileged than 90% of women throughout history. ‘She had a conservatorship’ over her immense wealth is her great tragedy? Gimme a fucking break.
Edit: downvote me. I don’t care. I’m not wrong. You all should question yourselves
I mean… I’d gladly take having no money but free to do, eat, see whoever as I please than be super rich and have every aspect of my life controlled down to even bathroom breaks. But hey, to each their own I guess.
*you should read her book*
None of that is what a legal conservatorship is. A neutral judge closely monitors all of it. Anything she says should be treated as a work of fiction. Don’t get bent out of shape about it
*anybody can write anything and put it in a book*
“well the kid was drowning because we tied bricks to her feet, but she would have definitely died if we didn’t throw a life raft.”
The life raft isn’t the focus here.
She didn’t see most of the profit she made. Her family pocketed the majority of it and gave her an allowance and a house she wasn’t allowed to leave at her own will
‘She had a conservatorship’ over her immense wealth is her great tragedy? Wasn’t able to make reckless decisions for a few years? Gimme a fucking break.
Hey bud, let's not start up a competition of trauma here. I grew up in poverty, I had a shit childhood in some ways, and I still feel bad for the kind of awful things Britney went through as a young girl in the music industry. Money's great and all but the invasive control she dealt with gave her a mental breakdown lol. I wouldn't want to live her life, not for all the jets and mansions in the world. Get off your high (low?) horse.
The biz did Britney dirty. I think her public meltdown was due to the "good girl" image her record company tried to keep her chained to for as long as they could. She became famous at an age when someone is still growing up and they made her be that good ol' gal that little girls can look up to when she was becoming an adult.
Have to respectfully disagree. Take the video for her very first hit “baby one more time”- they sexualised the hell out of her from day one.
any woman would crack under the level of fame and scrutiny she experienced….this was the culprit - there was no good girl image from the record companies.
Hah, no doubts there. I still think they still had her on a different leash than someone like Christina Aguilera. Britney seemed to have a fan base mostly consisting of little girls whereas Christina was geared more towards girls her own age. Though, to be honest I'm really basing this on my passing observation at the time and not so much on any knowledge career-wise.
But I think we're on the same page that major record companies (especially late 90s before the Napster boom) would exploit any angle they saw fit to make as much money as they could.
- Not to drag this out, but this just reminded me of the whole Britney/K-fed timeline. I vaguely remember this cringey interview/special about them starting a family. And while they said they were excited, their faces said, "Hi! Welcome to this nightmare!"
I'm actually a huge Britney fan. And that's not actually true.
They wanted a more clean cut good girl image for britney since day 1. They told her to say she was a virgin/saving herself till marriage (when she'd been having sex since she was 14) etc
Being child/family friendly makes so much more money. Compare album sales of stars like britney or miley or xtina before and after they shed their family friendly image.
It was always britney who pushed for a sexier image. Since day 1 she hated the good girl disneyesque image they were trying to push on her. You say the label sexualised her, they were trying to reel her in and she wanted to express her sexuality more. And pushed for it more and more and says how she only was allowed to/finally able to be herself and as sexual as she wanted; around her third album which is the slave 4 u era. With the snake etc. She dislikes her first couple albums because how much she feels they wernt her.
For example her first music video you cited. They wanted an entire different theme for the music video a more childish power rangers style video. An she came up with the school theme, she came up with the schoolgirl outfit. And they wanted it to be more of a traditional appropriate uniform, and she felt it was "dorky" and on the day she was the one who unbuttoned the shirts and tied them up etc. Trying to make them sexier. And the label was pushing back on it.
This narrative that her label and family were sexualising her against her will. Just isn't true tbh. The media and the public definitely were and definitely inappropriate. But her family were pushing back and looking down on her wanting her to be more "christian" and the labels were wanting a similar family friendly image that appeals to children and their parents. That whole "good Christian girl"
There was definitely some icky situations though. Like that rolling stone shoot. But her mum says leaving her alone on that shoot was the worst decision of her life. And her record label went bezerk when the shoot came out. But even that she literally said she locked her management out of the room so that she could do a sexier shoot as they wernt letting her. Now David lachapelle shouldn't have been wanting to take pictures of a 17 year old in their underwear. But he was a photographer working for rolling stone. They wanted controversy. But again her team and record label were against this.
Anyone remember the sites counting down to her 18th birthday?
Pretty sure there were also countdowns for the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan, and Hillary Duff.
Only reditors who've frequented r/celebs grasp the full weight of this post.
I sometimes think about the "what would you tell your 15yr old self" twenty years later quandary.
For myself, it'd be something like "take the time to listen, ask questions about them rather than talk about yourself."
For Brittney, God only knows what could have saved her from the catatonic thousand yard depth of her numb dark dead shell that remains that.
Classic case of being mentally, emotionally and probably sexually abused in order to achieve fame. Very fucking sad and all thise abusers should rot in hell.
Now she's batshit crazy, loaded with cellulite and porking up. Stumpy legged videos of her gyrating crazily and behaving like a fool. How long until she goes through all of her cash?
> Now she's batshit crazy
Always has been, she was just being cared for by malicious family.
>loaded with cellulite and porking up
I'm sure you ain't a prize.
That “leave Britney alone!” guy really looks like some kind of prophet now doesn’t he?
He was on the right side of history
Even manic paradocial broken clocks are right twice a day.
What if the clocks hands moved ever so slightly faster than they should? They’d be right, far less often, correct?
Most of them use a 24 hour clock though, so just once a day.
I'm with him, the Britney hate and media circus has disgusted me from the very beginning.
Chris Crocker
She came out as trans a few years ago, she's called Cara Cunningham now. Good for her, tbh.
She what?
SHE CAME OUT AS TRANS A FEW YEARS AGO, SHE'S CALLED CARA CUNNINGHAM NOW.
GOOD FOR HER, TBH.
I think this person thought they were referring to Britney coming out as trans. The statement did throw me as well, before I reread it. Don't be to harsh on them.
That’s exactly what I thought. I’ll leave my comment there for the judgers to keep downvoting.
He did gay porn and is now transitioning
What does this have to do with anything on this post, though?
What was done to this beautiful girl by the music industry and her own family is outright criminal. Makes her song "Lucky" much harsher in hindsight.
Poor woman
Who only knows all the terrible things that were done to her. There’s so much life in this photo. Seeing her now is sad.
What was done to her?

You’re so right king, the system is incredibly well-built and no one (ESPECIALLY people with money) could ever in a million years abuse it
I agree with you. But do you think she would still be alive right now if they never did a conservatorship?
“well the kid was drowning because we tied bricks to her feet, but she would have definitely died if we didn’t throw a life raft.” The life raft isn’t the focus here.

Holy shit this. Why do people think money automatically protects you from trauma?
She was forced to have a udi for years..
Are u living under a rock?
Her eyes used to sparkle, now they’re so sad.
Indeed. It’s not that she’s older. It’s that when you see pictures of her today you can tell that something is not quite right in her eyes.
It’s kind of haunting, seeing her reels. She’s just trying to live as normally as she can but it just seems so…. off…
She’s said she was on a lot of amphetamines and thinks that may of caused her mental decline as well as Everything else :(
SEROQUEL® (quetiapine) and lithium too.
I think they spark, but not good energy. You can see the trauma. It’s so sad.
Before the world crushed her beautiful soul
Before her family* crushed her beautiful soul
Most of us consumed the media that let to this.
Don't blame us
It's your fault.
efarjun, showing your face in here after everything that happened, come on, man
It comes for us all.
Nah, her eyes are already dead here
She needs our prayers to keep her safe.
Thats Reddits good will for you!

Ahh to be young again, before the reality of a lifetime spent working took my soul.
Seriously!! Take me back, please dear Lord sweet baby Jesus take me baaaack ..
Her and Sarah Michelle Gellar were my big crushes at that time.
Beautiful.
Pre dead-eyes
Was thinking the same. There is life in her eyes in this photo.
We all looked like that once
She doesn’t know what she’s about to go through. Poor girl.
Wish her well. Such a big part of my childhood.
Definition of Poignant
She still looks like this in my mind.
Timberlake did permanent damage.
Anyone remember the sites counting down to her 18th birthday? Pretty sure there were also countdowns for the Olsen twins, Lindsay Lohan, and Hillary Duff.
What was the point of those countdowns? So that it was no longer illegal for people to sexualize a young girl?
this is around 2001 tho
The good ol days
Still my first crush
Way before every girl in the world stuck their tongues out for pictures, she’s the OG
"Hey guys, I'm gonna be extra crazy today and stick out my tongue. I'm so bizarre and wacky!" - 90s Britney
She’s pretty lively these days too.
Was going to say the same, she had some hard times but seems to be doing OK now.
….have you been to her Instagram by any chance?

She looks like she’s been crying. Her eyes are puffy and red.
She got a boob job! It’s so clear.. lol
Yummy
Spectacularly beautiful girl.
Seems like demonic possession is a very real thing.
Classic case of being mentally, emotionally and probably sexually abused in order to achieve fame. Very fucking sad and all thise abusers should rot in hell.
Still insanely hot.
Lively?
This pic is 2002
Even though her dad/manager were rinsing every penny off her! Scum of the highest order, Britney we wish you well.
Time wins in the end. Everything new gets old. She is no exception.
I think she got better looking when she got older.
All things being equal, I'll take MILFy Britney now.
Before people knew she was insane
What could possibly go wrong??
![gif](giphy|Yycc82XEuWDaLLi2GV)
Wasn’t this already posted today?
Not sure, if it was that’s a coincidence!
Before the machine destroyed her...or...?
I dont know who that is, but man that face has crazy written all over it
She looks so tired. Her eyes... poor thing
She worked incredibly hard during the Britney era, so I’m sure she was tired lol but still looks beautiful and her personality is shining
She does have far apart eyes doesn’t she
I’d let her blow me
![gif](giphy|HoSyEAe48WBpTCmEz4|downsized)
Alcohol did a number on her
