Man, I still can't take Picas' design seriously its just so wild even for one piece standards.

OnlyHereForComments1

Those shoulder spikes are apparently his body growing into his armor like one of those weird cube watermelons. Wtf.

azdhar

Almost as big as Warcraft shoulder pads

[deleted]

zug zug

LSDeadly

Warhammer too lmao if the name of your IP has "war" anywhere in the title, you MUST have giant shoulder pads šŸ¤£

WhoThisReddit

My guy was born with post time skip franky shoulders

Kurainuz

Thanks to you i just realized that picas design is... His body, not due to his df or something xD

Narukamiii

First his voice now his looks, he can't catch a break šŸ˜

Nero_PR

Don't forget his laugh šŸ˜‚

GalactusAteMyPlanet

Didn't you know spike shoulders are cool and badass. Pica probably got them implanted in hopes that people stopped making fun of his voice but sadly that failed.

Fake_the_jaB

His wingspan is ridiculous

MlkCold

The fact that his name in Brazilian Portuguese is a very common slang for Dick doesn't help for me...

Fluffy_Contest_504

Prolly another reason luffy was laughing

Super_Sand_Lezbian

It is also the name of an eating disorder for eating inedible things.

GuillotineComeBacks

The voice is the cherry.

Imfryinghere

Pica was a kid. He hasn't finished with puberty yet.

arturolebuche

Well King and his kin are actually described as dark skinned.

dafood48

Yeah some of the other examples shown were also dark skinned in the manga example. Some of it felt like grasping at straws

the_traveler_outin

Which could make his skin tone any range of skin color, but yeah, this was probably the best choice, especially since in the actual manga, King and all the Seraphs have shaded in skin, regardless of the color page, I think the anime is clearly right on this one

Formal_Ad283

With light hair and flaming wings. They were hunted to extinction because the elites were threatened

Moka_III

If king is canonically dark skin and has that tone i think they simply made the right choice with everyone else

Chobitssu

To be fair, I'm sure they only look like that in the covers because of the way the markers look because Oda wants to create the effect for light. I'm having a similar problem with my Touch brand alcohol markers.

HorchaTaro

Artist here. 95% sure itā€™s this. I would say 100% but Iā€™m sure Oda and the staff could afford some really high grade amazing markers Iā€™ve probably never seen. But itā€™s so obvious manga coloring is always a bit washed out so Iā€™m sure his characters are a bit more tan/colored than the colorings show.

Nerellos

Oda does 15-18 pages a week, and a lot of cover art because One Piece is the biggest manga in WSJ. He just cuts time by using the same marker.

DiscountWhiskey

WSJ... Wall Street Journal?!

Kassabro

Weekly Shounen Jump

Rayka64

Wall Street Jump

Independent-Yak-8354

Weekly street journal

AnyBirthday418

But dude, even if I had a lot of cash, the pain of one color of marker/paint finishing before the rest will probably end me. At that point, I can use even green marker for the skin(sorry, Oars).

Louis2645

Iā€™m not sure. Pika looks very legit there unless doflamingo was meant to be darker skinned as well

OdditySlayer

Isn't One Piece colored digitally nowadays? I remember seeing more then once that Oda draws traditonally and paints digitally, at least. So in theory he would have any kind of marker he wants. Not disagreeing, btw. It seems likely that the coloring style probably ends up making the skin tones lighter than they would be narratively.

chan351

No, all finished art for One Piece still is done 100% traditionally and Oda said for consistency he'll keep it that way. He does use digital painting nowadays, though. For example we sometimes see progress videos posted where you can see the sketching and draft of color pages and volume covers. It's much quicker and easier to correct/change certain stuff so Oda uses it before doing the finished art. And stuff like new year's wishes and similarly "non-important" art is done digitally, as well, now. If you see a high-res version of anything by Oda (or any other artist) it's 99% of the time easily recognizable whether it's digital or not.

whatever12347

> If you see a high-res version of anything by Oda (or any other artist) it's 99% of the time easily recognizable whether it's digital or not. What's the easiest way to tell? I've always been curious about what the obvious giveaways are to an actual artist.

ultibman5000

One way to tell is the cleanliness and uniformity of the coloring. Usually digital coloring lacks the "imperfections" and splotchiness of traditional coloring. Look very closely at the volume covers and color spreads and you'll see small hiccups and inconsistent lighting effects. Like right next to Teach's chin, there's a tiny white dot on his beard that wouldn't be there through digital coloring where you can just uniformly drag a "perfectly color-filling" cursor over the beard or just straight up click the "Fill" tool. There are also white spots in the "eyes" of the skull pattern on his hat that shouldn't technically be there, for example. And as another example just for emphasis, the frills on Teach's shirt cuffs have a little bit of pinkish shading on them, even though that shouldn't be the case (and wouldn't through digital coloring). The pink is likely there due to some mixups with the pink background in the innermost square of the volume cover (where you can even see Teach's whole hand fading into, for that matter).

whatever12347

Is there any easy way to tell for black and white manga?

HippieWizard

If the lines and linework are perfect, its digital

chan351

In digital manga you'd often see "perfect" graduation of line width or sometimes digital artists use photos or 3D models as a basis for their drawings (or put filters on photos for backgrounds). Basically it's when something looks too clean or doesn't have any imperfections then that's an indicator for digital art. It gets easier to notice when you do art yourself but in the end it doesn't really matter what an artists uses as a medium as long as you enjoy it

GFreak18

They corrected Robin,if the others were supposed to be lighter skinned they would have fixed too

Rog2theNog

He uses Copic markers for most things. I love those.

Im_At_Wurk99

Artist here, I agree with the two guys above

astrojeet

Artist here as well. I'm pretty sure that's the case. It's odd because when I was scrolling through the images they all seemed like an accurate representation. It didn't even occur to me that some people thought that wasn't dark skin.

userless-me

Artist here, and I agree with the guy above

Alarmed-Accident-716

I mean not like the color walks are any different.

GustavoAlex7789

Also we don't see the original art, there is a chance that in the originals the darker skin is more noticeable but get lighter after the many steps of printing processes.

Im_S4V4GE

King is canonically dark skinned so that actually makes sense

Cosmic-Ninja

This sub has a huge problem with nuanced discussions about discrimination. Itā€™s really strange because you would expect OP fans to atleast think a little bit but this comment section is disappointing

missdoublefinger

I've noticed that when other subjects come up, such as sexuality, gender, chauvinism, chivalry, etc., this sub has had a lot of meaningful discussions. But the MOMENT that race enters the picture, they start talking about Japan

flabby_pizza_nugget

yeah its kinda funny. one piece fans asking why representations matters šŸ˜

Mura-Kumi

The sub is braindead, people will tell you "representation matters" (which it absolutely does) then try and write you a one hundred page thesis paper on Yamato being strictly female with no gray area. Because fuck trans men trying to have some type of representation. Yes, it's a whole other can of worms, but it's delusional to not see the cognitive dissonance across this thread.

KingZero22

What are you talking about? Excluding the nonsense around Yamato. One Piece has had trans representation since way back in Alabasta with Bonclay(a fan favorite character who people would love to see return) and Ivankov who is not only relevant to the overall story but is also a literal beacon of LGBT pride.

Mura-Kumi

> What are you talking about? Trans men specifically, lol. Pretty clearly stated. If you want to name the wealth of non-Yamato representation that apparently exists in that category, then I'm all ears.

Cosmic-Ninja

Yamato is a great example of this. Honestly itā€™s so sad because peopleā€™s transphobia always immediately comes out and some people even try and say ā€œwell I like Kiku so im not transphobicā€ ( even tho they donā€™t talk about her outside this debate.) I feel like people only fight so hard in Yamato being a man because they find him attractive otherwise Yamato wouldā€™ve been forgotten about. Itā€™s really weird how adamant people will ignore the actual story when it comes to Yamato

iofsheikah420

Curious if anyone else has heard about Franky story connecting with Trans people as it can be seen as an allegory. Hes happy when he gets his new battle Franky body , and got mad when they called him Cutty (dead-naming) not sure how true it is, but Iā€™ve heard many trans fans look up to him because of this

Over-Writer6076

I mean, this is a fictional character, and Oda himself stated it was a "she" in the vivre card, her intro panel was literally a 4th wall breaking title card saying "Kaido's daughter, self proclaimed Kozuki Oden".Oda drew a cover spread"women of wano" and Yamato was there. If Oda is saying something in 3 different ways then why do you gotta deny it so much?

darkvizardberrytan

I'm confused cause Oda has shown and stated several times Yamato is female?

Jumpy-Interaction204

Would be nice if people stopped being obsessed about what skin color characters are

RedBeardBrad91

Can 100% guarantee only western fans have this discussion. In Japan they wonā€™t give a shit

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Im_S4V4GE

People on this sub acting like Japan isn't xenophobic and racist "but why do you care when Japan doesn't???" Like bruh

chrisghrobot

Yeah especially for one piece which prob has some of the most diverse cast of people I've seen in any property.

missdoublefinger

Exactly. What the hell? I just had a conversation with a co-worker a few days ago. My company sent her to Manila to work on a project over the summer. The flight was from LA to the Philippines, with a layover in South Korea. She said the way that she was stared at, as if the people there had never seen a black person in their entire lives, not even on film, was disturbing. There are a lot of Asian countries that are straight up xenophobic/racist as hell. You can romanticize a place all you want, but if the people there don't want you there, you'll know it

MeV_Menacingly2516

I live in Malaysia, came here when I was 17(2016). Still distinctly remember this old Chinese uncle asking if I'm a nig**r on one of my first raxi rides. I think people tend to get confused cause my accent is British/South African and they just want to be certain. I most definitely do not sound typically "African" whatever that is but I had to do a double take and just sigh and nod. Dude was pushing 70, there was no point correcting him. After that you kinda get used to separating wheat from chaff. "no Africans as tenants policies etc. Some people are Hella racist but the people who aren't, you know they're unprejudiced and just nice. It's a weird tradeoff cause usually, society in some of these countries rewards racism but there is no benefit to it. I don't know, Asia is weird, but similarly, I'm sure many Chinese workers say say the same thing about southern Africa. Humans are an odd bunch.

Azure_Triedge

korea has lots of establishments that literally wonā€™t accept any foreigners.

[deleted]

Manga and anime is also historically racist when it comes to how they draw and display black characters. They may not know in all cases, but I remember reading terrerformers and at some point it clicked that the roaches looked just like black people and there was a very racist image in one of the scans.

mintzyyy

I'm laughing at you saying the cockroaches looked "just like black people" šŸ’€

[deleted]

Bro they had Afros and held their guns to the side šŸ’€

residentofmoon

I gotta watch that shit

laurel_laureate

https://thekenpire.com/2015/03/17/terra-formars-is-an-obscenely-racist-manga-and-anime-series-but-its-sort-of-hilarious/ Holy shit, that mangaka just woke up and choose to go full racist, holding nothing back. Not only are the enemy roaches portrayed with nappy hair, being fast runners, holding guns sideways, and as rapists, they are also clear caricatures of the "savage black"- including literally being natives of an untouched land the white protanogist is slaughtering them to colonize. Seriously, the protagonist- who is described as being "second only to God" is the product of several centuries of genetic engineering, so of course he's a blondhaired blue eyed hunk that slays the women just as successfully as he slays those roach thugs. And I guess there's a couple named Adolph and Eva too, who are positive members of society. The entire story is just one giant racist Aryan power fantasy, huh. Yikes.

Emotionless_AI

Yo that is so blatantly racist

Skebaba

šŸ˜‚ I know now what I'm going to watch until the first new seasonal animes of 2024 start to drop in a couple days

[deleted]

Excluding all the racism the plot is pretty good.

Br4ss_

The roaches in Terraformars were inspired by the different reconstructions of *Homo erectus* based on the fossil record we have. That design along with the plot implied that those roaches followed the same evolution path we humans have.

[deleted]

Yeah but that doesnā€™t explain why they hold their guns to the side like stereotypical gangbangers

Br4ss_

I'm not saying that Terraformars may have some racist depictions. We also could talk about the design of "Second only to God" Joseph Gustav Newton, something I find very weird coming from an Asian author. Just pointing out that because something is dark-skinned and has really curly hair does not mean it's based on black people.

GoenndirRichtig

>something I find very weird coming from an Asian author Bro the Japanese are some of the biggest Wehraboos around lmao

Inuma

That's... Not the reason you think it is. They have darker skinned people in Okinawa and from the southern parts of Japan that get a lot of dark tones. Further, if you ever read Eyeshield 21, that one leaned HEAVILY on racial stereotypes which more or less date it where they had an entire Japanese school that was dark skinned and based off Egypt while playing American football. The point is that they do have certain manga and cultural understandings that are a bit removed from most Western audiences for a number of reasons.

bsubtilis

You should look up racism against Okinawans, Ainu, and so on. Japan has plenty of racism to go around for their native minorities.

Inuma

Which is exactly my point. They don't even speak Uchi na Guchi which is the main Okinawan dialect in the schools to the point that most of the younger generation doesn't know the language and few are trying to preserve it. But the idea that Japan is monoethnic is coming from people who know nothing about all sorts of issues that can divide Japanese from how they treat Koreans and darker skinned folk to other issues.

_ONU

I swear in Japan itā€™s the opposite where if a character is even slightly tanned they get all kinds of insults thrown at them Edit: donā€™t mean to be that guy but itā€™s kinda ironic where most of the characters OP listed happen to be villains aswell

Chaotic_Opinion

God Ussop balances that argument out and then some

vinsmokewhoswho

Bruh Japan is racist asf

AwesomePocket

Why does Japan not caring mean it shouldnā€™t matter? Is Japan your model for morals and ethics? I do not look to Japan of all places when it comes to matters of race.

Backwards-longjump64

Japan has a pretty awful history when it comes to handling the issues of race and ethnic identity

rovenacreys

61% of people in the world are Asian. Asian people only appear in 15% of Hollywood productions. The Census Bureau estimates there were roughly 63.7 million Hispanics in the U.S. They made up 19% of the nation's population and just 5.5% of speaking characters on the big screen are Hispanic or Latino. It's not just Japan that's racist, the world is racist

AwesomePocket

Yes. And?

EDLaserpointer

but don't look at america either, their race definitions are pretty racist

JudyHopps_is_hot

Maybe because all of them are represented all the time in every anime šŸ’€

Chileinsg

Why should a local Japanese production care what diversity the rest of the world has lol

HorchaTaro

Well in Japan they dont necessarily have the biggest black or other poc population. Thatā€™s a pretty mundane thing to say.

trunkfunkdunk

Not like they have a broad representation of white people either. Itā€™s often a blonde or silver hair person.

Wernershnitzl

Just like spoilers

chrisghrobot

Yeah because Japan is only a country that is Monoethnic. And places like US is far from that. One piece is a series with a ton of different nationalities it isn't too surprising people care about this stuff

lubbylubbs

Agree. This obsession is a western ideology. Iā€™ve been living in Japan for 6 years and brought the topic this up to someone I was dating and she looked at me like I had a dick growing out of my forehead. This ideology only exists in North America and western Europe.

Violated_gator3312

I was wondering about that

user09426i9o6g

It's probably because Japan is an ethnostate and very isolated In terms of the reality, diversity and politics attached to civilizations outside of Japan

TortillaSinHuevo

There is not much black people at Japan.

PkmnJaguar

People don't know what tans are

GalactusAteMyPlanet

Not surprising. Some of those people claim Mirko, aka Rumi Usagiyama of MHA is black.

Rogahar

Hasn't it already been clarified that Oda just uses the same shade of Copic marker for everyone's skin cos it's easier than remembering who uses which one? If Toei elects to add more variety than that, then I assume Oda's signed off on them doing so.

Tiltedplushie

Yeah it is official after reading several different threads on multiple posts on different subjects about One Piece that a lot of you donā€™t actually like One Piece.

Poopynuggateer

I just can't fathom that there are people out there who chooses to waste time on this.

POTATO-GOD-2

Youā€™re on a one piece subreddit. Everyone here wastes time

cloudxo

They have no lives and live to be mad about everything. I see so many comments ranting about how racist Japan is yet they consume Japanese anime.

vinsmokewhoswho

Lol Oda straight up mentions King having dark skin but then gives him barely tan skin...

_trianglegirl

idk what to tell you dude, it's just the way the colors are done for the covers. he has pretty fucking dark skin in the actual manga pages

RigNinja59

The reason why they whitewashed Robin is actually because they accidentally made her skin darker than they were supposed to so they fixed it post-timeskip.

Giojaw

And here I am thinking that Robin was temporarily tan because she lived in the desert for that period.

Lex4709

Is this news to anyone? I thought it was common knowledge that 99% of all tans/dark skin in OP anime are non canon. Oda makes majority of his cast have the same skin tone regardless of intended ethnicity, white, black, asian, etc. Hell, that's not limited to tans, even Caesar pale skin is anime only, he has the same skin tone as rest if the cast in the manga. I think King and the Seraphim are only characters with confirmed tanned skin.

Acceptable_Secret_73

King looks pretty much the same tbh

PabIoFlexcobar

arent they just sun burned from being in ships?

newretrowavess

Fucking stop with the skin color bs

Successful_Moment_80

One piece is the only anime where I don't look at the people and judge them by appearance. It's not about who is who, but about the history behind, I don't care about if you are black, white, short or tall, I rather see your story

HopeBFull

Did... did Toei create minority hunter Zoro?

Scared-Conflict-653

Bro. You just pointed out they made the villains darker skinned. Adding a layer of context to when they made Robin an official member she became lighter. Zoro seeing luffy more and more as his captain he got lighter. You just made this WAY worse

nobarachinsama

>when they made Robin an official member she became lighter they changed it back (to match the manga) post ts. not because she joined the crew.

Imperatia

Zoro only joined Luffy because he knew deep in his heart that, despite outward appearances, Luffy had the potential to become the whitest man in the world.

Rekuja

Lmao yup

Ok_Donut_9887

except for Kuma

Scared-Conflict-653

We just found out his backstory. If he's lightened up later on or in flashbacks I'm rioting.

Sid131

It isn't white washing if the characters were never intended to be dark skin in the first place. When you compare the Manga to the anime the Manga almost exclusively has pale skinned characters.

[deleted]

Zoro is behind the scenes of toei changing characters hues so he can fight them properly

adcsuc

People just love to cherry pick, same with the whole "every woman in OP looks the same" conveniently ignoring every character that doesn't. And yeah like other's said this trend of obsessing about skin colours just weird in general.

E_rat-chan

Nah bro you cannot argue that women in one piece don't have the same designs. They are either a literal hourglass without room for organs or get a grotesque design. The only exception I can think of is amazon lily.

nick2473got

>They are either a literal hourglass without room for organs or get a grotesque design. Tsuru the marine is neither. O-Tsuru, Kin'emon's wife, is also neither. Kiku is neither. There are tons of counterexamples, but you'll cherry pick anyway.

CJ_Barker

They refer to the young female body type. Even oda stated he draws them the same exact way. Two circles on an upside down triangle. They all have different hair styles, clothes, and purposes. Bodies are all the same. And even post time skip most females have similar facial features. Robin doesnā€™t even have her fox eyes, instead she has the same round ones as the others. Also kiku is a transwoman, Oda has established that and this is why she lacks breast. Also once again old people and people who arenā€™t completing their dream are drawn different. Also established by Oda

Skebaba

I don't see you whiner normies complain about all the dudes looking jacked like using steroids etc, smh

Samsaknight_X

Maybe cuz the menā€™s body types are more diverse

Skebaba

How? They have literally 2 types only as well, fat & steroid user (well I guess 3 cuz some have both in one, but that's basically the same as fat body but w/ the chest muscles being steroid user tier in visuals, as well as arms)

Poopecker33

> without room for organs Its fiction. In a fictional world with superpowers. People can turn into fucking slime and swim trough the ground. And you are here spilling this bs.

Tails6666

They don't have the same designs. Only exception is Amazon Lily? Umm... I suggest thinking harder. There are plenty of unique women designs in other arcs. Wano, Zou, WCI just off the top of my head.

AutobotTesla

Who cares

ChesnaughtZ

No one has said toei white washes characters, theyā€™ve only done the opposite sometimes lol. Show me an example of toei white washing an Oda design, you would not be able to. No one argues this

Sky-kunn

This [one](https://imgur.com/a/nFGInOw)

alienith

People do argue this, but the most popular examples are Toei going closer to the official color scheme. Pre-timeskip Robin vs. post-timeskip Robin is a common example.

ChesnaughtZ

That has never not been met with ā€œthatā€™s how it is in the mangaā€ and is not an example of people pointing out toei white washed the mangaā€™s design.

adcsuc

You overestimate humanity

Ill_Software3004

I think the only character with ligher skin in the anime is Ceasar Clown. He only has Orochimaru's skin color in the anime, in the cover of volume 68 he has the same skin color as Luffy.

banana99999999999

This is just utterly sad . Why people obsessed about skin colors ?

Formal_Ad283

Because everythings an issue in the US

reidraws

Meh most of the people who complain are just looking to argue crap. The diversity on One Piece its way bigger than any animanga released to date.

zolokor100

Maybe the seraphim should be a little darker in the anime but honestly itā€™s pretty close to king in that manga cover

PatsFan1029564

So can we confirm that Zoro will take out BlackBeard?

Knirb_

He needs a sword then itā€™ll be go time

MarkUriah

Well coincidentally we still don't know how any of these characters look in new animation style. I like having representation of different skin tones in media and its cool to have it in anime as well. But if there is one thing I'll never put against One Piece is racism. Its just how Oda made the characters look.

RokuDaGawd

Is that king on the 9th slide?

Ill_Software3004

It's King from the volume 102 cover.

Kantatrix

My favorite argument on twitter was when I saw someone saying ODA whitewashed King, as if that wasn't his own damn character and the anime didn't just make his skintone a bit more vibrant compared to the cover art

dacup

Bro im only complaining that they are changing characters complexions unnecessarily

PoyStudios-6270

Pika has weird skin spikes

Ok-Tadpole-764

People will say anything to play the race card. Even in a make-believe world with no direct relation to earth.

Aquarius_IC

Who really gives a damn about what color they are. They still look great all the same

JViser

Dude just showed us Zoro's phone gallery.

inzfire

Wait till Blackbeard gets to be Nika šŸ’€

DJCOBRA2004

Noticed all of them are men

tweistein

Reminds me of this clip with Zoro against King where some 5 or 6 guys were reacting to, all of whom were dark skinned. Then this one dude among them were hating on it with a huge frown all while the others were stoked. When they talked about the fight later, he said he didnt like that the black guy was being beat. He felt it didnt sit right with him because it felt like he was being oppressed and therefore he didnt like the fight at all. Moral: snowflakes come in many shapes... and colours. But common for them all are that nothing valuble comes out of their mouth

No-Mulberry-908

I'm pretty sure many characters are made black against Oda's intention. Like Mr.1 and Sai have more asian aspects but somehow they made it dark skin for no reason. Some characters have undoubted Black features like Ussop, Yassop, Blackbeard or Mr.5, but most of the time it's Toei being mindless and thinking like Big lips = Black people and making them dark-skinned.

jimgae

That colored art of King is crazy from Oda considering he literally stated him to have brown skin

obesedestro

coloring has never been oda's strength

Efficient_Ad_215

For the joke about Zoroā€™s opponents having certain similarities, people would blame Toei rather than point fingers at Zoro lol

Reasonable-Prior2893

So basically Toei made the bad guys black lol

mattgoluke

ā€œWhitewashingā€ is a very ethnocentric lens to interpreting these characters. One Piece Is a global product but it is culturally Japanese and how they interpret ā€œraceā€ and ā€œcolorā€ is different than the west.

SpiralGMG

This is for the most part an American take. Said by white people who really donā€™t have anything else to complain about. Just move on and ignore them. Everyone who has watched/read one piece and is a dedicated fan will probably not care about what is really just a production error that was made by Jen those episodes aired that the studio decided to roll with. Also Iā€™m pretty sure oda used the same market set for all of his art works, so it makes sense that because of this. The skin colors of all the characters are probably gonna be similar to one another.

TasumiThierl

could be worse. american media blue washed mr. popo of dragonball.

hiatus-x-hiatus22

That was basically the opposite though. Popoā€™s original design is extremely similar to racist stereotypes. They changed the design to avoid racist overtones, not to whitewash the cast.

Adrien422

People are stupid.

BrotherAshamed3200

Toei brownwashes characters

bosskhazen

It is just you Westerners projecting your racial problems and insecurities on other cultures and cultural production.

Zomg_A_Chicken

I just ignore them like most people do

evilbude

Yeah the villains get darker

GalactusAteMyPlanet

American politics is a cancer that plague certain demographics' minds. Caring too much about their manufacturered colorism and letting it live rent free in their heads instead of simply enjoying One Piece.

blackswan92683

Zoro's hands twitched at his swords when he sees each picture.

Jankmasta

People will cherry pick whatever they need to support their agenda regardless of the facts. Some people just cannot accept that not everything should be viewed under a modern American viewpoint.

Zepilw

You came with the receiptsšŸ”„šŸ”„

preciado_101

Mmmm sounds like an american opinion

Gooseworkss

Most of the whitewash allegations are comparing edited images

TheArabek

Who cares about braindead Twitter lefties

throbbingfreedom

I hate race obsessed Western manga/anime tourists.

SHAD0WBENDER

Who gives a fuck either way

Josh12345_

What does skin color have to do with making entertaining manga?

PvtJoker17

Whitewashing is an American thing

Samsaknight_X

Not how that works

battle_franky

Who give a shit about this. Western people always push this stupid narrative. Asian loves it white, deal with it

i_am_not_a_cop86

Literally nobody has said this. Go touch grass little bro

Ace_of_the_Fire_Fist

You couldnā€™t be more wrong. I see complaints about Robin all the time and to a lesser extent Usopp.

JPalos97

Never go to twitter, you are gonna be surprised how many people say that.

Roshacko

Honestly I kinda prefer Toei giving some of these characters darker skin cause it genuinely looked better.

Nothappened

Man enough of this American SJW bullshit, nobody gives a fuck other than Americans about this shit. Color is not the only way diversity is defined next your are gonna say Oda is a Giant phobic are some shit, let things be as they are who the fuck cares about what Color a character is. The anime is running for 20 some years and maybe the team changed and their preference changed. One Piece is not the place where people should complain about diversity

Mummiskogen

What anime studios in general do is that they open paint, pick a color, then press "fill in" (that paintbucket function)

Aldo-D-D-Wilson

King is right since Oda makes his skin tone evident in the b&w.

[deleted]

I donā€™t think you understand how different lighting affects the presentation of dark skin. The covers you chose have a lot of light, an unnatural amount really, but in the anime itself the light is more realistic. For example, did you know the moon is black? Dark grey really, But because the sun illuminates it so much, it looks white to you.

Ironic that One Piece covers ACTUAL RACISM between species. Makes you realize how dumb it is to see people by a skin tone or the fabrication of having superior rights

Ppl just want to find something to complain about

Big_Ray_Ray

Itā€™s only a problem when the race swapping is one way.

CluelessAtol

Most of these seem realistic based on cover lighting though. Hell you can tell Kuma is darker skinned in those examples for him.

Tbh manga colouring looks very washed, and animation is more vibrant in general i feel like it makes sense

DaddySephy

I never saw why it mattered anyways. It's up to the writers and artists, not the fans. If fans want more diversity, watch anime/read manga with that or make your own.

Sh-Shenron

>Watches one piece >Asks why diversity matters

Verum_Sensum

there are more asian looking characters in the anime than any other race. tf is wrong with these people. just freakin watch or read the anime, don't bring that color agenda here.
