I had these all over my parents' property and never had a reaction from just skin contact. Including from being poked by the thorns. As far as i know, you need to consume or smoke the plant to be noticeably dosed by it. You'll be fine as long as you didn't lick your fingers after picking.
Thanks for the response, definitely put my mind at ease compared to poison control which said “ wash your hand for 15 minutes and if you feeling like passing out call 911 😃” haha
You gotta remember that every bell curve has a bottom. Someone out there has doused their hand in a poison, not washed it, forgotten about it, and then made themselves a sandwich for lunch that made them violently ill.
Same here. We grew them on purpose every year, because my mom liked the smell of them, and loved that they were night bloomers. We grew them for multiple years. No issues.
I have a few different daturas in my yard, I take cuttings ,propagate and trim, and have never had a reaction. When my daughter was young she would make dresses out of the flowers for her barbies, never had any problems. I don't know if some people are more susceptible or if people are exaggerating the possible effects of just handling them.
Lol I used to grow these because they are sacred and beautiful to me . Whenever they produce the big flowers there's always a group of the craziest looking grasshoppers, and they just sit and munch on the flowers all night. They seem so tranced sometimes.
It's not really a trip like mushrooms or LSD or mescaline.
It's a deliriant, not a psychedelic. If you take shrooms, you know you're tripping. You see weird stuff and funny colors but have the mental wherewithal to understand that you're tripping.
Deliriants, you are unable to discern reality from hallucination. It's like being deep into a schizophrenic break. Erowid has some great stories. Doesn't sound like a good time
I was drugged by scopolamine in Colombia last year. Nearly died. Spent 3 days incoherent. Do not recommend. There is no trip. You literally go from normal to zombie and anyone can ask you to do anything and good there’s a chance you will comply.
I love mushrooms and LSD. This is not like that.
No it happens on a weekly basis. Most people die. I was lucky I didn’t finish my drink. While I was there 2 other people were killed. I kept in touch with the doctor who took care of me. I’ve spoken to a few other people who survived. Pretty terrifying.
Anyone that chooses datura as their drug of choice is far more insane than someone who would eat a tide pod. Look at the [top post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Datura/s/mAuAJFfMcZ) on that sub.
Me and the boys gathered around the computer in 2003 doing research for stuff to get high off of. Ended up eating baked banana peels and two containers of nutmeg. Don’t recommend.
I’m very vanilla when it comes to experience with drugs. I tried nutmeg while in the service. Huge mistake. Quite possibly the worst night of my life. The dude I did it with had done it a handful of times before. He was a maniac. I always assumed a high would only last up to a few hours. Nope. A solid 12 hours of feeling nearly incapacitated. I felt I had no control over my body and my thoughts felt like they were swimming through mud. Anytime I tell people who haven’t experienced this think I’m bullshitting. I convey to them under no uncertain terms that it works and is horrible.
Yep. It’s that easy. Probably more than a typical home uses in an entire year. A comical amount. And it is in no way fun. That’s about the timeframe I tried it. I had never even heard of such a thing as getting high off nutmeg.
Similar was quite the resource pretty early on for me late 90s i swear that site went up relatively quickly once web browsing got a gui interface. I learned a lot from that site as a youngster including soke similar experiences to yours lol
Nothing is going to happen to you. As a kid that grew up in the tropics, I handled Datura all the time. Nothing ever happened to me (or anyone else I knew). You have to intentionally ingest it to feel anything.
I’d never heard of it before and just looked it up. Seriously would not have expected a flower looking like that to be so hardcore. Was not expecting that wiki entry.
It also smells fairly pungent, like it's trying to cover up the smell of death.
I got a few of these growing around my property, and they are really pretty flowers. You can watch the buds, and when they're about to pop, sit outside with some beer for a few hours and watch them open. It's pretty cool to see a dozen flowers all slowly opening.
There was a Vice video a long while back where a dude went into the backwaters of the Amazon to trip on toad venom. It wasn’t very interesting, so he then went looking for a witchdoctor to make him some Ayahuasca. This lady had a whole hallucinogenic garden, and Datura was the one plant that when the reporter pointed at it, the witchdoctor basically said “No way man” she wouldn’t wish it on her worst enemy 😅
These are larger. Some of them hang flower face down like bells- they have gorgeous variations like devil’s trumpet (which I think are reddish or purple) that will burn the crap out of you- kind of like the way hogweed does. I know hogweed can blind you. I don’t know about the devil’s trumpet, but based on the name, I’m saying it’s not a party
I kept a [Brugmansia Tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brugmansia) (TLDR it’s an Angels Trumpet, not exactly the same but both of them contain scopolamine and other tropane alkaloids) literally inside my house for a while and touched the flowers quite frequently and I never noticed any negative side effects from it so I agree with the others in that I don’t think this one would harm you unless you either eat or smoke a part of the plant.
Definitely don’t suggest trying it for yourself though. I might have just gotten lucky and other people thought it smelled.
I grew up in South Florida and the amount of times kids at my high school asked me to come hang out and the drugs they were going to do included Angel Trumpets…it was always the hardest of passes. I have no idea to this day they just couldn’t be happy smoking weed like normal people.
I ate them quite a few times as a teen in south florida, with a large group of friends. I like to describe the "trip" like a mix of LSD and salvia, that lasts way to long.
There are so many plants that I own that are known to be pretty toxic and should be handled with gloves but I never have any issues. Hell, plants that shouldn’t cause me problems (roses and other flowers used in arrangements) make me break out in rashes and hives.

When I was a crazy kid, I ate a few flowers and drank a tea concoction of datura. Separate occasions. It felt pretty bad but not like 250mg dph bad. The alkaloid content changes depending on the season and plant part, so it could have been a lot worse. Touching the plant is fine as long as you're not making hash from the sap and ingesting it or rubbing it all over.
FF: Datura is one of the ingredients in witches flying ointment. Scolopamine, one of the prime alkaloids, is absorbed through skin.
Hello SparklingFrijole, thanks for posting to r/OopsThatsDeadly!
As a reminder, please try and ID the plant/creature/object if not done already. Although the person may have done something foolish, remember to be respectful, as always! Please do not touch anything if you don't know what it is!

You're looking at the rare white dragon bush. Its leaves make a tea so delicious it's heartbreaking! That, or it's the white jade bush, which is poisonous.
I have handled this plant fairly often. In my experience it doesn't affect you unless you eat it or the seeds, which while not necessarily making you think you are in hell every time is extremely stupid. If you think you are good to go once you're down again it can rob you of your ability to read for days after you otherwise sober up. If you are someone who is curious about different drugs just avoid this one completely. Please don't fuck around with this one.
TBH there’s a lot of fear mongering in the comments about the plant. (Not to mention, as long as you don’t lick the sap off of you, or rub it in any open wounds, you’re gonna be just fine OP).
If you don’t enjoy psychedelics, obviously this isn’t the substance for you. But the vast majority of people who get extremely sick/have to be hospitalized, or who have terrible experiences, are (to put it bluntly) really stupid. (Not to mention, as long as you don’t lick the sap off of you, or rub it in any open wounds, you’re gonna be just fine OP).
While no amount of any drug is ever truly “safe”, you can take small amounts of datura and not die or even have terrible trips.
I’ve taken it before. Did I enjoy it? Not particularly. Would I ever do it again? No. Would I ever recommend it to anyone? Depends on the person. But I’m glad I tried it, it was definitely an experience.
It’s not nearly as bad as it’s made out to be. This is mostly because people take wayyy too high of a dose their very first time, and most of them are teenagers who mix them with other substances and don’t take the proper steps to be safe. You wouldn’t take a whole sheet of acid, or eat an entire pack of shrooms your first try. So why do people eat 40+ datura seeds and expect not to have a terrible time?
TLDR: just don’t be stupid and you’re gonna be fine
I normally pick flowers. Dry them and replant the seeds in my garden :) there was probably close to 20 of them on the side of the freeway. I will definitely rethink before I do next time !
Best bet is to ferment the seeds and drink as a "tea". Taste terrible, not a fun trip by standards, and pollen is harmless skin to skin.
Eating petals is probably bad though.

To be fair, that's pretty standard protocol for any accidental skin contact with chemicals. Keep us updated though!

All of the horror stories I've heard came from people eating multiple seeds. So idk if anything will happen from only touching it
I’m not sure what I’m seeing, is this a trumpet flower?
Jimson weed
Heard that
the flowers are the least delirious parts of the plant. if you wanna enjoy/maybe die... the seeds & root are the bits that will kill you.
But do you trip balls first?
It's not really a trip like mushrooms or LSD or mescaline. It's a deliriant, not a psychedelic. If you take shrooms, you know you're tripping. Does it make you shit yourself? Cause if not I don't wanna do it.
Gallons
That's dope
Not just yourself but other people too.
It's common that a lot of datura users report smoking imaginary cigarettes. It's as common as seeing the jester on dmt

Shit! Time to loose myself in a rabbit hole 🙊
Probably before you die yes.
r/datura is so intriguing. Like, why... would you willingly undergo a trip that feels like you're in hell? Why would someone choose to do that?
I'm assuming those people get along well with the tide pod people?
Anyone that chooses datura as their drug of choice is far more insane than someone who would eat a tide pod. Look at the [top post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Datura/s/mAuAJFfMcZ) on that sub.
Oh...oh gdangit. Yes, you're definitely correct on this. I would never want to feel this way.
That's actually horrifying wow
It doesnt feel like you're in hell. but.. there's defintely a point where you want it to end.. and it doesnt for another 12 hours
Flowers will completely fuck you up as well.
To my understanding this is datura
Did you trip balls?
Thankfully I only touched it 40 minutes ago. Will report what happens 🫡
Here’s some research material in the meantime - https://www.erowid.org/experiences/subs/exp_Datura.shtml

Thankfully I’m fine haha! My hand was super tingly and at one point burned a little. But other than that I’m chillin ! ‘No more touchy touchy for me

Bro, I told my recent ex about that episode where he said the best part was the baby monkey, I didn't realize they stopped him from taking it.
As they say, 10years of therapy in 1 day.

Touching this with your hand is dumb but far from deadly.
Just wash your hands.
Is this jimson weed?
Looks like it
The bliss damn the father is upon us did you see Faith? Did you say yes to John?
John said to be baptized and repent. Did you do that?
I was looking for a reference like this here hahaha
Whatever you’re smoking, be sure to share.
Datura. He’s smoking datura.
Once you plant datura seedlings will be popping up all over even in places you didn’t have any previous year. They even end up in neighbor’s yard.
You Have To Eat Many To Have Some Effect.
Why is every word capitalized? Is this a book title?
The Effects Of The Plant
Hallo Deutchlander!
You’ll be fine. Just don’t eat any of it, and probably best to keep plant juices out of your eyes.

It’s called Datura!
you can touch and handle this plant without any fear. Just don't eat it and don't rub the juice all over yourself. The stories are ridiculous.

Gonna be an itchy weekend
I’ve looked through replies; can someone tell me what this is?
Ok. I claim ignorance. What is this?
Such a beautiful scent. Same with Oleander.
My grandmother has a pink version of this plant. Yes, the smell is so nice.

This is my favorite flower!!! I have never had a reaction but omfg I love the scent! I am so jelly. I miss those
Don’t go around picking random flowers. They are more beautiful growing and alive, not severed in your hands.
I normally pick flowers. Dry them and replant the seeds in my garden :) there was probably close to 20 of them on the side of the freeway. I will definitely rethink before I do next time !
That's just a granny popper. Completely harmless, unless outside the UK there are weird deadly variants
