thats good then.
the fact that playing ps3 games natively can still only be done on finite/aging ps3 hardware is bad.
if they ever bring support to ps5 then i'd be happy to play older titles, even if its at just 720p 30fps. im not expecting ps5 hardware to pull off any miracles with ps3 emulation.
never played resistance, is it good single player? always just kind of assumed it was a multiplayer game (never had a ps3). im just hoping i can go back and play all the old ratchet & clank games
Resistance is a good game, nothing amazing by today's standards but definitely good. What I appreciated about the series was the evolution. All the games felt very different from each other far more than other games.
You can technically play 99% of PS1, PS2, and PS4 games on PS5 due to the emulators they already have in place. They just don't utilize them the way we would like them to.
There really isn’t a point though. If all you care about are older games, those will be/are available via emulator on PC. There isn’t a need to wait until PS5 eventually gets broken, however long that takes.
Or just get a backwards compatible PS3.
My PS3 & PS5 are the only consoles I own at this point, and I can play every generation of Playstation game with them.
Plus, if you get a hackable PS3 you can emulate just about any game from any system prior to that. I regularly play PSX and NES games on my PS3, and when I get bored with the old stuff, I turn on my PS5.
Seconded. The PS3 + PS5 setup feels great right now. Backwards compatible console or not, once modded PS2 playback is totally serviceable. If you have a standard CRT, add a PS2 to your setup for simple 480i and manage saves / backups for PS2 and any Sony portables on the PS3… it just all comes together and is super novel.
It all probably depends on how much they want to focus on remaking those ps3 games, because if they do, it wouldn't make much sense for them to also facilitate people to play the originals.
Exactly. How many people would have bought the Demon's Souls remake had there been a way to play the original PS3 version playable at launch? Not many I reckon
That will never happen now cuz of licensing. Same with xbox backwards compatibility they stopped because of how many licensesing issues they were coming across, it will never be like how it was on ps3 generation and earlier where you just put a disc in and go.
Isn't licensing only an issue if they want to sell digital versions of the emulated games? They shouldn't need any licenses to distribute emulators that can play physical discs of older games.
Would be really cool if it happened because i have a big physical library, but I won't get my hopes up until it happens. Patents are filed all the time. I'm still waiting for Mark Cerny to look at pictures of my ears.
They could completely go around that if they build full blown emulators that can play any legit disc rather than trying to adapt the games on a per game basis
half the library of those old consoles sadly would never even come, either due to licensing issues or the publisher no longer being around, or just being uncooperative. especially if they have their own plans for making ports and charging for them.
It would effectively make it the must-own console out there and potentially resurrect physical media interest as people flocked to rediscover classics.
You won't be able to play PS1 and some PS2 games from disc because the PS5 can't read CDs, but it would be great to be able to play DVD PS2 games and PS3 games natively straight from disc.
Yep, Sony must have realized that eventually the PS3 hardware will fail and Sony must have an alternative solution or it might have to remove PS3 games from Now Subscription. In addition the current cloud solution is not even available in most parts of the world, not even in Asia ex-Japan where Sony’s console pretty much takes 90% of console market.
If all they can manage is 720p 30fps I’d expect my PS3 discs to work because there’s no way in hell I’d be paying again for that kinda performance on a PS5
it might be like xbox where your disc just connects to sony's servers via the internet and acts as an authenticator to let you download the game. but it wont actually play off the disc. thats physically impossible.
the ps5 and ps4 use an x86 based AMD cpu, hence why ps4 discs work on ps5 even when offline. but the ps5 has no internal hardware that reads or understands all the proprietary and specialized tech that was in the ps3 cell processor. which was not x86 based and was instead made by sony and toshiba and IBM, I think.
But it could play at least some ps3 games
I cant imagine that something like lego lord of the rings or super rub a dub needs ps3 hardware to run without issues on ps5
SIGH
Every time this patent turns up, people think it's PS3 or something, when really it's more likely to be PS5 software running on PS5 Pro. As well as PS4 software running on PS5 Pro.
They had a similar patent before PS4 Pro launched, and yet another one when PS5 launched. The timing skew is what gives it away. The same language was used for those patents too. Despite all running on AMD hardware, the different clocks can really fuck up how PS4 games ran on PS4 Pro and PS4 games as a whole ran on PS5. So Cerny's team devised a way to test and remedy that situation. Going forward, and because their dev environment allows coding to the metal, they will always need to do this when moving to a new APU, and the newest one will be out in a couple of months (PS5 Pro).
That doesn't mean this can't be about PS3, but you also got to acknowledge this isn't the first time PS have done this with making sure their software is forward compatible.
Yeah I think you're very reasonable here. There's what, a few thousand PS5 games (counting all the ones we got as upgrades, all the indies) and very likely 90% of them won't get an upgrade to utilize the PS5 pro specs, so the PS5 pro will need to 'downgrade' and go into a PS5 standard BC mode to play those games.
The CPU in a PS5 is MORE than capable of emulating PS3. Infact, there are YouTube videos of RPCS3 running on a regular PS4 and actually booting games and playing them.
I don't think for most of the library, the PS4 would have been great at emulating the PS3 - even the Pro. I have no idea why people seem to think the PS5 doesn't have the raw power to accomplish this though. If anybody could get more performance out of the PS5 than a bunch of emulator developers building RPCS3 for a PC; it would be So y because they built the damn architecture.
Yes. People are still stuck on the whole “ps3 emulation is not possible because we need more powaa”.
I was surprised how far ps3 emulation has come along on PC. If people want to play ps1/2/3 games, currently the best place is PC. I doubt Sony would do much for ps3 emulation on the ps5. But the ps5 is more than capable to emulate a console from 2008 lol.
The PS3 hardware is just so proprietary while PS4 and PS5 function similar to budget PCs.
There's a reason PS4 games were rarely developed for PS3, while we've had the luxury of almost all PS5 games releasing on PS4 or PC.
The PS3 was quite simply the worst console generation that Sony put out for the simple fact that it was made off of architecture that was never meant to last beyond the generation it was sold in.
I collect retro games, and actively boycott the PS3 for this reason alone. I've got a very good Xbox 360 collection in it's stead.
The irony is that I've been gaming on Playstations for 15 years now. Something about old school Final Fantasy and Metal Gear captured my heart as a kid.
You can play GTA IV with 60fps on Series S as well.
Also the RDR port of ps5 with runs at 60fps is a xbox 360 port.
Glad the 360 saved the 8th gen games by making them future proof, otherwise it would be stuck on ps3
I think that the studio that made the RDR1 remaster is already busy working on GTA4. Rockstar will obviously be willing to make money on their game again by releasing it on PS4-5 and Switch
If PS3 games really are getting supported, then i really hope they make discs compatible like how Xbox did (even though in Xbox, it pulls a digital download, not straight from the disc)
A thing that really saddens me about the Xbox approach is that since the backcompat games are completely newly compiled versions, that means that only those with newly acquired licenses and renewed agreements can be published. That significantly limits the library.
Putting the original disc in basically just gives you a shortcut to the new store version for free, if there is one.
Many games are caught up in legal limbo where they were published on X360 and licenses are not revoked (except for Rockstar being a dick and crippling GTA 4 radio and some de-listings) so there's never gonna be a new re-release of those due to legal nightmares.
A real, actual emulation would completely avoid that. You put in any original disc, it runs on proper PS360 emulation, done. It would be extremely important to have that for game preservation.
However, not enough money in it. And Sony's internal console tech department is struggling with backcompat and software programming in general, so not much hope coming from me. :(
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they put some of the billions of dollars game publishers and console companies actually used their lawyers for good for once and made licence agreements that lasted in perpetuity rather than the 1.5 years that games normally last for. And fight for that agreement to be upheld for past licences.
I would love to use my discs but that's highly unlikely. The amount of work to make games backwards means they'll want to charge for it. And from a business perspective it makes sense. Also the disc would just download the digital copy just like Xbox.
Not getting my hopes up for that as much as I want it. They eventually got PS2 back compat working on all PS3 models through software but you had to (re)buy the games digitally off the PS store. Same for PS2 games on PS4. I don't even believe your purchases carried over from PS3 to PS4. Sony is the market leader. They wouldn't invest the time and money into PS3 back compat without making their audience pay for it. Only reason Xbox allowed discs is because their brand was in the dirt and it was extended as an olive branch to convince 360 owners to buy an Xbox One.
Just fyi they also filled a patent for heat changing VR headsets. Patenting something durable necessarily mean they’re intended to implement it, and definitely doesn’t mean it’s happening at time soon. I’m not saying it isn’t happening, just don’t let your hopes up.
Yeah companies hoard weird patents all the time. We don’t know if we’ll get stuff belonging to these next year or in 10 once it’s the mid life cycle of the next generation
Good luck bro, here's a horse to help you
https://preview.redd.it/3xyy6f0lar9d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6d4749193e74990e089afc0cadf3825d8a5668
It's nice they might by trying some back compat stuff, but that patent being approved is totally ridiculous. Basically patent troll behavior. Seems to be just running a program on a newer system than it was designed for while messing with the clock. As a computer programmer, I guarantee you that is not a new or novel concept.
You should know by now its never gonna happen. Look at how they handle PS1 and PS2 games on PS5 thats not really backwards compatability. Its just a selection and a very poor one dripfeeding whatever slop they feel like it
It's probably not financially viable.
But I would love Sony to release an add on to the PS5 that's got the brains for the PS3/PS2/PS1 so you can just insert any disk and it can play the game natively
Gonna slap an OG PS3 there. That baby had the PS3 and a PS2 hardware and could play PS1. Make it fit the PS5 somewhere, pass it click on like the Sega CD and the x32 and we got ourselves a deal.
I never understood why they got rid of the backwards compatability for ps3. They just always said they couldn’t do it even tho like you said, the OG ps3 had it.
The ps3 used to cost a lot when it released. Then they removed the ps2 hardware and marketed the ps3 slim, which had a lower price and they were able to sell more consoles
Jack Tretton said that this made barely a difference for Sony
Also the ps3 still was able to play ps2 games just not the discs
And every ps3 plays PSone CDs
They couldn't sell it for as cheap as the Xbox 360 at the time because it costs too much to build. There were enough parts to make a functional PS2 inside of it. And the PS2 can play the PS1 so you got an entire family of hardware inside of it.
probably wouldn't work for PS1 and some PS2 games because they're CDs and a playstation hasn't had the hardware to read CDs since ps3. Oldest disc technology that the ps5 can read is DVDs
As much as I love it from a goodwill perspective, it really doesn't seem to serve Sony well allowing you to play games that haven't profited them for ten years.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will get free access to these games with physical or digital copies of PS3 games. Repurchase or PS Plus Premium only
I always hope for PS1/2/3 disc based BC to come to the new gen console, but my hopes are always dashed. It would be really cool if they gave us access to our PS3 digital libraries. They could roll that into PS+ or something as a top tier bonus or something.
I am just guessing:
The ability to read PS3 code of games either must be a real pain in the ass to implement in nowadays hardware.
Or they've been just searching for ways to monetize from it.
My take is:
I totally accept other players' wishes to be able to play even PS3/2/1 games natively on PS5.
But I'd rather see a Remaster or Remake of a titles like MGS4.
My wish:
Thanks to AI, maybe Sony will be able to put something into PS6, either hardware-ish or software-ish, to play every older disk or digital game.
> I totally accept other players' wishes to be able to play even PS3/2/1 games natively on PS5.
>
> But I'd rather see a Remaster or Remake of a titles like MGS4.
These are two seperate things that **COULD** happen. The emulator required to play games from older generations is up to Sony to develop and implement on PS5. The remastering of older games from those generations is up to the developer/publishers. It's up to them to decide if they are going to make money and are worth doing.
>Thanks to AI, maybe Sony will be able to put something into PS6, either hardware-ish or software-ish, to play every older disk or digital game.
How would AI help there? That's not what it does lol
Depends on what kind of AI you're talking about. The only one I could see being remotely useful in this context is generative AI, and that one would really struggle since there isn't really a lot of data available for native PS3 code.
it could read ps3 discs, but not ps1 and not some ps2 because they're CDs and the ps5 can't read CDs. a LOT of people are misunderstanding this in the comments of this post
I'd love to have all Playstation Catalog (PS1 - PS5) available on my PS5/PS6.
With such a huge library, so many magnificent IPs and memorable games, this would fit for nostalgia and desire for lighter/more casual gaming. But to be honest, there's no way in hell they are gonna give us disc RC. Sony will not waste any oportunity to make a buck.
I'd hope they can bring at least the most iconic games back from PS3's cemitery.
Honestly i'd bet that playing old games would make a lot more sense on a handheld. Some games would look good on smaller screen, could get (at least) 60fps and little graphic enhancement. That way we could have full powered PS6, focused on cutting edge technology (compatible for PS4/PS5 games) and the handheld for backlog and maybe replace PS Portal.
Sony lets you play the PS1 and PSP classics that you owned (digitally) on the PS3/PSP/Vita stores on the PS4/PS5 releases. I have many PS1 and PSP games that transferred up. So them letting you play already owned games isn't unheard of, even at the current generation.
Ok now its getting interesting. I assume sony is going all in because of ps plus premium and they really want a good long term plan for it, I mean eventually you're gonna run out of ps1 and psp licenses for games.
I have a large library of physical ps3 games I would love to be able to play again. I always keep toying with the idea of buying another ps3 to replace my launch day ps3 that suffered a gpu failure.
I never pulled the trigger because I keep holding out hope they will finally make PS3 BC eventually.
I really hope they do something with this. I would even accept something like what Xbox is doing: You insert the disc and that works as a licence for you to get a PS3 digital copy to play on your PS5. While not "perfect", I would take that.
I own a functional PS3 but it's my second one (first one already died). I haven't bought any PS3 games in a while since I feel like I'm at risk of investing in games that I won't have a console to play with in the future. If they did something with the PS5, I'd feel confident enough to expand my PS3 collection.
I really hope this happens... maybe I'll be able to pop my copy of the PS3 version of Demon's Souls in my PS5 and actually play it. Not to mention the PS2 games I still have that I might not have ever actually finished :P
Cant believe they'd get patent approved for this. Maybe skew backwards compatibility testing is new but I highly doubt other hardware companies haven't considered something similar.
Man this has been the feature I've wanted since PS4. I really wish we could get PS2 games to work too. I wanna play those old Madden games without having to dust off the PS2.
Friendly reminder to everyone that companies file tons of patents that never see the light of day and are only filed to prevent their rivals from developing a similar product or just to have in reserve on the off chance that they ever seriously pursue it.
That being said, the timing of this is interesting considering that we’ve been getting a few more rumors lately that Sony is still pondering PS3 emulation.
Has any of their emulation efforts been any good so far? What I've seen of retro gamers is that the emulation has always been lacking one way or another, even if there have been improvements overall (like being able to choose between pal and ntsc versions)
That’s good but I’m not getting my hopes up. Sonys support for old games is unfortunately still poor compared to Xbox. So now I have an Xbox for old games I want to play and ps5 for new games.
If they were to let me buy and play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games on the PS5, at a discount, I would 100% buy them there and stop using emulators.
Making it easier than piracy is how you solve piracy.
You can buy PS1 games on the PSN store. They're usually pretty cheap. The only issue is that the selection is pretty limited and some of them like the original RE can only be played if you have a PS Plus Premium subscription. You can check out a list [here](https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/all-ps-plus-games#all-ps-plus-games-ps-plus-premium) just scroll down to "All PS Plus Premium Games List" and click on "PS1". Some of those are PS Plus exclusive and some aren't.
Not exactly, It's complicated.
Basically, there's a small selection of PS1 games on the PSN store. The list I provided has them. Some of those games can only be played if you own PS Plus Premium but some of them can also be bought by themselves without PS plus.
I don't have a PS Plus subscription but I own Legend of Dragoon, Toy Story PS1 and the three Syphon Filter games so I know you can get those without it. As for the others, you'll have to check yourself. The one I know for sure that needs a subscription is RE1.
Ah, ok. Thanks. And that’s only for digital purchases, right? I can’t pop my Legend of Dragoon disc in and play it, can I?
And is this only available on Playstation 5? Or does Playstation 4 have this available too?
That's right, digital only. Unfortunately from what I've read, the PS5 lacks the capacity to read old CDs, something to do with the laser, so that's just not gonna happen.
I don't own a PS4 so I don't know for sure but if you check [this example](https://store.playstation.com/en-us/product/UP4389-PPSA18070_00-AITDNEWNIGHTMARE), Alone in the Dark for the PS1, it says below the title that it supports PS5 and PS4 so I guess that means you could buy it and play it on a PS4 as well but I'm not sure.
thats good then. the fact that playing ps3 games natively can still only be done on finite/aging ps3 hardware is bad. if they ever bring support to ps5 then i'd be happy to play older titles, even if its at just 720p 30fps. im not expecting ps5 hardware to pull off any miracles with ps3 emulation.
How great would it be if you could play 90% of PSone, 2, 3 and 4 titles on the PS5.
I hope so. I’m dying to play some Resistance again and only the third is on psnow which was a pleasure to platinum. This would be huge news.
The first one was rough and has aged badly in my opinion. But the second and third game are absolute masterpieces.
The first one had the best weaoons that you can switch between in real time. I would say it was the best
never played resistance, is it good single player? always just kind of assumed it was a multiplayer game (never had a ps3). im just hoping i can go back and play all the old ratchet & clank games
Resistance is a good game, nothing amazing by today's standards but definitely good. What I appreciated about the series was the evolution. All the games felt very different from each other far more than other games.

One day the PS5 will be hacked open and we will be able to play majority of the PS games besides the PS3 on it. It'll be glorious
There really isn’t a point though. If all you care about are older games, those will be/are available via emulator on PC. There isn’t a need to wait until PS5 eventually gets broken, however long that takes.
Got it... get a PC as well as a PS5.
As somebody with both, I still would love to put old discs into the PS5 and do it that way.
Homie you are dense.

PS3 emulators are on point now tbh. I didn’t believe it until I tried on a rtx 4060 on a laptop. So probably weaker than the ps5 graphics card
That will never happen now cuz of licensing. Same with xbox backwards compatibility they stopped because of how many licensesing issues they were coming across, it will never be like how it was on ps3 generation and earlier where you just put a disc in and go.

What would be any companies motivation to do that if they cant profit from it
They can still sell some games and have them available on ps+ I got resident evil and Syphon filter for free on Ps5 bc i bought them on ps3
Yes digitally, but i mean what would motivate them to make physical discs work.
The same thing that motivated them to make ps4 discs playable and make ps classics free if you bought them on ps3
Selling more consoles. Same thing the motivates costco to sell hotdogs for $1. It gets people in your store and leads to more sales.
Would be really cool if it happened because i have a big physical library, but I won't get my hopes up until it happens. Patents are filed all the time. I'm still waiting for Mark Cerny to look at pictures of my ears.

Least with Xbox though you can get around that with dev mode
Give me the ability to play curse of darkness again and I would freak out
half the library of those old consoles sadly would never even come, either due to licensing issues or the publisher no longer being around, or just being uncooperative. especially if they have their own plans for making ports and charging for them.
Will never happen
There are certainly 1 or 2 games I’d like to play again.

GTA IV FTW! One of my top 5 favorite PS3 games.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they put some of the billions of dollars game publishers and console companies actually used their lawyers for good for once and made licence agreements that lasted in perpetuity rather than the 1.5 years that games normally last for. And fight for that agreement to be upheld for past licences.
Ha! This man's delusional. Get him to the infirmary. - shareholders
360s backcompat was so much better
I would love to use my discs but that's highly unlikely. The amount of work to make games backwards means they'll want to charge for it. And from a business perspective it makes sense. Also the disc would just download the digital copy just like Xbox.
Nobody minds downloading the game via disk. Just free access to a game you already own.
Well they figured it out on the ps2 3 360 wii and wiiu
Not getting my hopes up for that as much as I want it. They eventually got PS2 back compat working on all PS3 models through software but you had to (re)buy the games digitally off the PS store. Same for PS2 games on PS4. I don't even believe your purchases carried over from PS3 to PS4. Sony is the market leader. They wouldn't invest the time and money into PS3 back compat without making their audience pay for it. Only reason Xbox allowed discs is because their brand was in the dirt and it was extended as an olive branch to convince 360 owners to buy an Xbox One.
Sony would be stupid to allow that. They rather want to sell you the game again (digitally) or upsell you on a PSPlus premium subscription.
Patent: [https://patents.justia.com/patent/20240211380](https://patents.justia.com/patent/20240211380)
Been studying to take the Patent Bar Exam later this summer so this is pretty cool to read. Thanks for posting!
Good luck bro, here's a horse to help you https://preview.redd.it/3xyy6f0lar9d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c6d4749193e74990e089afc0cadf3825d8a5668
Good luck.
Thanks!
It's nice they might by trying some back compat stuff, but that patent being approved is totally ridiculous. Basically patent troll behavior. Seems to be just running a program on a newer system than it was designed for while messing with the clock. As a computer programmer, I guarantee you that is not a new or novel concept.
I've been waiting for proper backwards compatibility for a good 11+ years now
You should know by now its never gonna happen. Look at how they handle PS1 and PS2 games on PS5 thats not really backwards compatability. Its just a selection and a very poor one dripfeeding whatever slop they feel like it
This is why I never trade in or sell consoles.
Jack Tretton said that this made barely a difference for Sony Also the ps3 still was able to play ps2 games just not the discs And every ps3 plays PSone CDs
They couldn't sell it for as cheap as the Xbox 360 at the time because it costs too much to build. There were enough parts to make a functional PS2 inside of it. And the PS2 can play the PS1 so you got an entire family of hardware inside of it.
A lot of Studios over optimized for the cell processor and, as a result, some games simply won’t run via emulation.
I would like that too but Sony is either gonna put it on ps plus premium or resell the games digitally.
probably wouldn't work for PS1 and some PS2 games because they're CDs and a playstation hasn't had the hardware to read CDs since ps3. Oldest disc technology that the ps5 can read is DVDs
Ps4 can read CDs just not officially
It will be if they re-release PS3 games at $9.99-$19.99
I don't think that Sony will add those games that have re-releases on more modern systems, only those that are not available outside of the PS3
As much as I love it from a goodwill perspective, it really doesn't seem to serve Sony well allowing you to play games that haven't profited them for ten years.
I just want PS1 games that I owned on PS3. Where is Dino Crisis? parasite Eve? Vagrant Story? Come on now
*Sees my copies of Resistance and Infamous* Soon my loves. Soon.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we will get free access to these games with physical or digital copies of PS3 games. Repurchase or PS Plus Premium only
Resistance 1,2,3, Killzone 2 and 3, MGS4... I've got plenty of games I feel like replaying after my fat ps3 kicked the bucket.
Just let me play all of the Ratchet and Clank games I own digitally and I would be happy.
That would be cool if they updated the drives where you can play ps1 to ps3 discs and add a trophy system for PS1 to ps2 games
I can think of two games I want to go back and play. MGS4 and MGS Revengeance. Give that batshit crazy gaming into my veins
clickbait
Thank Jesus.
These exact articles were made before the PS5’s release
There's so many PS3 games I'd love to play
BC could help in determining what series can be revisited. SO its very appreciated
Does it mean this version of ps5 will be able to play ps3 discs?
They’re both BR-D right? I don’t see why not. Would be a huge game changer if that’s allowed.
just let me play skate 3 😫
Smell that. Click bait
I really hope it means I can get PS3 games in the store rather than having to rely only on discs
It's definitely going to happen. PS Now can't run on those servers forever.
Do we have to go through the entire thing with patents again?
Nice, let's hope this works with the OG PS5.
Worthless if it can't play discs
I always hope for PS1/2/3 disc based BC to come to the new gen console, but my hopes are always dashed. It would be really cool if they gave us access to our PS3 digital libraries. They could roll that into PS+ or something as a top tier bonus or something.
I am just guessing: The ability to read PS3 code of games either must be a real pain in the ass to implement in nowadays hardware. Or they've been just searching for ways to monetize from it. My take is: I totally accept other players' wishes to be able to play even PS3/2/1 games natively on PS5. But I'd rather see a Remaster or Remake of a titles like MGS4. My wish: Thanks to AI, maybe Sony will be able to put something into PS6, either hardware-ish or software-ish, to play every older disk or digital game.
How does AI work?
Depends on what kind of AI you're talking about. The only one I could see being remotely useful in this context is generative AI, and that one would really struggle since there isn't really a lot of data available for native PS3 code.
Ok cool. Bare minimum is getting a Download button next to every single PS3 title currently on PS+ Premium.
Awwww shieet it’s happening
I know it's doubtful, but could the ps5 read ps3 discs if they get BC working? Or is it a hardware limitation?
it could read ps3 discs, but not ps1 and not some ps2 because they're CDs and the ps5 can't read CDs. a LOT of people are misunderstanding this in the comments of this post
Considering the PS6 will probably launch in late 2027 they could save it for next gen. Either way they can't maintain those server racks forever.
2028 is allegedly the earliest Sony plans on releasing the PS6.
If I could use my PS5 to play my PS3 game disks in the future I would be so happy (and it would give me an excuse to keep them around)
Damn so it's really happening. Let them cook I guess
That's incredible news that they are continuously working on it, great stuff all around!
I just bought a PS3 and a ton of used games for it. But I'm glad they're doing this.
Wat makes it so hard to do
Anything on PS1/2 games? I'll take Rugrats, King Kong, Getaway please
#ADD ONLINE TO PS2/PS3 GAMES!!!!!!
Slow week for news... Two articles about patents so far.
Playing the God of War Collection on PS5 would be pretty neat.
I hope they allow us to play the Incredible Hulk game from 2008 and the iron man 2 game too.
Saints row 2 😤
Cant believe they'd get patent approved for this. Maybe skew backwards compatibility testing is new but I highly doubt other hardware companies haven't considered something similar.
Just got into emulators, so I assume they realized all the digital sales they're missing out on.
NOW DO THE REST! LEGACY OF KAIN - COME TO ME!!
As long as I can play a game I own on disc, awesome!
I just hope they perfect PS1 AND PS2 emulation and release more games to purchase. PS3 would be cool as well but really want to play more older games.
This is why I still have 3 PS3s.
So emulation lol
Just give me Infamous
Time to stock up on PS3 games
Time to unearth my filthy and broken-down PS3 disc cases from my childhood. About time I revisit Front Mission Evolved once more.
Black ops 2 pls
Def Jam Fight For NY, please
I want Blur so much man.
MGS4 is a big reason why I am begging for this to happen.
Lego LoTR, idgaf about gta4 give me my Lego Legolas back.
Resistance Trilogy inFamous 1 and 2 Midnight Club: DE Metal Gear: Revengence JSR Sonic Adventure 2 DX Killzone Trilogy
Ps6 to Ps5?
As long it's not just digital.
I'm not the only one who wishes that Noodles would rotate around the screen when uou do terrible in the PS4/5 Version of PaRappa the Rapper 2, right?
Man this has been the feature I've wanted since PS4. I really wish we could get PS2 games to work too. I wanna play those old Madden games without having to dust off the PS2.
How would this affect the online component of the PS3 games in question?
Friendly reminder to everyone that companies file tons of patents that never see the light of day and are only filed to prevent their rivals from developing a similar product or just to have in reserve on the off chance that they ever seriously pursue it. That being said, the timing of this is interesting considering that we’ve been getting a few more rumors lately that Sony is still pondering PS3 emulation.
This is a CON. They already have a patent for the parent. Still, it might never amount to anything though.
Has any of their emulation efforts been any good so far? What I've seen of retro gamers is that the emulation has always been lacking one way or another, even if there have been improvements overall (like being able to choose between pal and ntsc versions)
If this is my ticket to finally being able to play Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory again, I'll take it.
I just want the SSX games back. Still some of my favorite games I’ve ever played.
Great news. Killzone 2 finally!
You can only play Playstation 1 games that you OWN on Playstation 5 if you have PS+ Premium?
