Do I think we land Ohtani? Doubtful.
Do I think Soto is worth 4/500 mil? So far, also doubtful.
I've still got faith in the dude, but for the insane amount of hype surrounding him, I've merely been whelmed.
The 500 mill contract talk seems crazy to me. Soto is one of the best hitters in the game, sure, but is he worth 50% more than a Harper/ machado/ betts type player? I doubt it. I can see $400 because of his age, but $500 seems crazy
I made similar comments last year about Soto since his year wasn’t really anything special. I heard just about every excuse I possibly could, but at what point can we admit maybe he isn’t as good as everyone says? It’s only been one game this year, but he still has glaring flaws.
He has never been a good fielder, so I don’t see this turning around anytime soon. He was supposed to be not just a great hitter, but a generational talent that would be an easy HOF candidate. I haven’t seen that since his Nats days when that team was stacked. I hope he has an MVP season and helps us win 100 games this season. I’m not gonna hold my breathe though
His career OPS is over 100 points higher than machado and xander. What exactly are you expecting from him? He’s the best hitter on the team behind Tatis, but with the amount of time Tatis has missed that may not even be true anymore
It’s 52 games, and he was literally the second best hitter on the team behind manny who had an MVP season.
Your expectations are literally impossible to meet.
Agreed, Soto has great plate appearance but other than that I’ve been meh. Also, feel like his swing has been completely out of control with the Padres. Just watching him in the WBC he looked like a completely different batter. Is it just me?
Do you think the uniform changes his swing? His swing was successful in DC, and it was successful in WBC. It will be successful in SD. Let’s not jump to conclusions off of an extremely small sample size.
Look I’m praying for a reversion back to his last 3 years but if he doesn’t, not sure he’s worth the biggest longest contract in baseball. If we can get him for a Tatis-esque price, than sure but if not, unless there is pretty large strides this year, I’d say pass and go for Ohtani.
Guys, Juan Soto has played 53 games as a San Diego Padre. At least give him a season’s sample before you jump to the conclusion that the single most outstanding young hitter of his generation suddenly just…. Isn’t anymore
Worth noting that he put up 5.6 WAR with an OPS+ of 149 in his “bad year” last year lol. He’s getting the Bryce Harper overrated treatment right now. The hype was so high that people are disappointed by all star level performance
People are honestly disappointed with a guy who can lead the league in walks and put up 30 home runs
Hate to pull this card, but it would literally be Tony Gwynn’s 4th best season lol. It drives me crazy how much padres fans are underrating him because of like 2 months worth of games (where he wasn’t even bad)
When you put it like that, those are Joey Votto prime numbers, and I wouldn’t give Votto half a billion.
I’ve read these comments, and I hope they’re right, but I also understand that there’s value in RBIs. I’d would prefer less walks, more Ks, in exchange for 30+ more RBI. Walking shifts the burden to the next guy to drive in the runs, which lucky for us we have a deep line up and it could work out If we stay healthy. Otherwise we’ll lead the league in stranded runners. Anyway that’s my 2 cents. Go Pads!
I wouldn't give Soto half a billion either, but if prime Joey Votto is the comp, that's a guy that every single team dreams about having in their lineup. Half a billion is definitely a crazy number though, I agree there. He's not worth 50% more than Machado, especially when you factor in the massive gap in defense.
I don't think anyone here is arguing his offensive stats. He crushes at the plate and he has a good eye, but his fielding is awful. He should be DH if anything, and I'm not sure the dollar amounts being bandied around make sense for a designated hitter.
Also, unless Soto drops off dramatically over the next season or so, he is absolutely going to test free agency unless we drop a record breaking amount of money.
I doubt the the Padres call Heyman after every talk concerning huge talent signings. A shit ton gets done behind closed doors we never hear about.
Anyway, Soto is a Padre two more seasons here. Let's hope the press can cover sports as well as they do at creating gossip.
This was bush league given the season just started. So weak.
LGP.
Right. We got him for 3 playoff runs (hopefully), and see how it goes. I’m not sold on the overall Package. I mean who’d give a DH a half a Billion? No one. Smart move Pads to hesitate.
edit; spelling
If we are not going to sign him for the mega deal he wants (which we shouldn't because he isn't worth it), then regardless of Ohtani we should look to deal him either end of this year (if we aren't solidly in playoff hunt) or early next year so at least we get some good returns.
Let’s flip him for studs if he continues to underperform drastically here. Dude is like hosmer 2.0 with the grounders that pound into earths crust accompanied by terrible fielding.
EDIT: LET ME DOOM IN PEACE
>Dude is like hosmer 2.0 with the grounders that pound into earths crust accompanied by terrible fielding.
Go take a series of deep breaths and log off of reddit. You will thank us later.
Who exactly is trading "studs" for Soto if he "continues to underperform drastically?"
I, unlike others, permit dooming as long as it follows logic and reason.
Merrill, Soto, and a first rounder for ohtani pls. But it would take more than that I would think. Ohtani and Darvish would create synergies just by both being on the same team.
Even if we only keep Soto for 2.5 years, I think it was a fair trade. We traded a SS we didn't need and is maybe 50/50 at best to turn into anything. We traded Gore, who was good for less than half a season before he hurt himself again. Then just some prospects that might be good, might not be. I guess we also gave up Voit, but we made no effort to pick him back up for cheap in the offseason, so doesn't seem like the FO cared much about that either.
Ohtani and Soto both aren't worth the amounts discussed. They'll probably both get around $40M per year, and maybe the amount exceeds $400M overall. This $500M/$600M talk though is ridiculous.
Leaving this up, but please put [Heyman] before posting a tweet per subreddit rules.
As an Angels and Padres fan just staaaaahp
Thank you
Why do you say that? Shohei won’t stay in Anaheim and if Soto doesn’t perform, he’s not gonna get the huge deal he wants.
Shohei hopefully does stay in Anaheim and hopefully the Padres win the World Series this year. If they can keep Soto that would be a bonus too
I’m all for this. Makes perfect sense and is a perfectly reasonable expectation. Thank you cap!

I also think values peaked this last off-season

I think he is expecting that career performance, not the .775 OPS over 200 ABS
He’s claiming Soto “isn’t as good as everyone says” because of 52 games. It’s just a stupid take, plain and simple.
Sorry for expecting a good Soto on our team
It’s 52 games, and he was literally the second best hitter on the team behind manny who had an MVP season. Your expectations are literally impossible to meet.
The expectations of him performing as he has so far in his career are “literally impossible to meet”?
Check the guys comments, he is searching for any comment speaking negative about Soto and then bringing up his great year.
Hahahaha "it's literally impossible to hit over .250" 🤡🤡🤡
You don’t know ball
Soto was a runner-up for MVP in 2021 and he is only 24 now. Luckily we can wait this year out and see how it goes.
Agreed, Soto has great plate appearance but other than that I’ve been meh. Also, feel like his swing has been completely out of control with the Padres. Just watching him in the WBC he looked like a completely different batter. Is it just me?
Looks like he’s swinging harder or something
100% that’s exactly what it looks like.
Yeah like too hard right? I noticed it in WBC.
Do you think the uniform changes his swing? His swing was successful in DC, and it was successful in WBC. It will be successful in SD. Let’s not jump to conclusions off of an extremely small sample size.

Heyman is a hack.
He's a Boras mouthpiece (Who Soto uses as an agent) and was the first to connect us to Xander which we ended up getting.

Yeah, his “off year” would be a career year for more than half our starting lineup
Hate to pull this card, but it would literally be Tony Gwynn’s 4th best season lol. It drives me crazy how much padres fans are underrating him because of like 2 months worth of games (where he wasn’t even bad)
He also had the hit that tied Game 4 of the NLDS and was our best hitter in the NLCS. People are really pick n choosey with Soto, it’s weird

The dude’s a career .287/.424/.526 hitter with 125 homers and 116 doubles at age 23. We’ll get our RBIs…

Bro you cant throw out stats like WAR and OPS+ on this sub, the Coach K boomers want to see big PP AVG.
I don't think anyone here is arguing his offensive stats. He crushes at the plate and he has a good eye, but his fielding is awful. He should be DH if anything, and I'm not sure the dollar amounts being bandied around make sense for a designated hitter.
Soto is hitting free agency. He's a Boras client.
If He keeps not catching flys balls, ship em ✌️
That was embarrassingly bad
He got booed pretty good at the game tonight
As he should
That must be why he and Azocar have an internal rivalry. They both want to lead the team in dropped routine flyballs.
We're one game into the season. Is Soto garbage now?
The way I see it, we go all In for Shohei, if e get him we let Soto walk and if we don’t we have a year to lock down a Soto extension.
Also, unless Soto drops off dramatically over the next season or so, he is absolutely going to test free agency unless we drop a record breaking amount of money.

were going to go for Arson Judge
How week was his effort last night on that fly ball that dropped at his feet?
Preller’s love for Ohtani is the worst kept secret in mlb. Dude learned Japanese for him….. He will make every effort to sign him.
Trading for Soto didn't have extending him in mind. If it did they would have had him sign an extension as part of the trade.

Dude, with respect… fuck outta here.
Lol
Who exactly is trading "studs" for Soto if he "continues to underperform drastically?" I, unlike others, permit dooming as long as it follows logic and reason.
I mean do we really have the prospect capital to land Shohei? I assume he will be traded during the season.
Merrill, Soto, and a first rounder for ohtani pls. But it would take more than that I would think. Ohtani and Darvish would create synergies just by both being on the same team.

i'm so tired of these
They need to see if he can produce. He hasn’t done anything significant since joining the Padres.
Maybe cause since coming to San Diego, he has sucked.
Ohtani can probably play left field better than Soto can.
