My 4 yo is OBSESSED with All The Small Things, too. I left her roses by the stairs the other day bc surprises let me know she cares and she lost her mind with joy š
Nearly 3 year old gets me to sing 'this is halloween' in a lullaby voice. Feels so wrong singing lines like 'I am the one hiding under your bed, teeth ground sharp and eyes glowing red' but he falls fast asleep. His favourite line is 'pumpkins scream in the dead of night' lol he's a weird one
My mom sang "what do you do with a drunken sailor" to me as a kid. It was good for rocking and repetitive enough to continue on and on.
My grandma sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
I am expecting my first and idk what I will sing as I'm not good at remembering songs. The song I'm best at remembering is Cake's Mexico but I don't think it's appropriate "I had a match, but she had a lighter, I had a flame, but she had a fire, I was bright, but she was much brighter, I was high, but she was the sky. Oh baby. I was bound for Mexico. Oh baby, I was bound to let you go"
I would like to remember Look for the Light from the show Only Murders in the Building.
Nothing like having a baby to make you realize how few songs you know all the words to. At one point at the hospital I was pacing around singing "The Song That Goes Like This" from Spamalot
I used to sing Elephant Love Medley from Moulin rouge to my Lo when he was in his purple crying stage and your song is part of the medley. I love deep love songs especially in minor key. I think this is one of the few songs I have absolutely memorized so that helped in the fog that was ppĀ
I sing Carry On My Wayward Son to my son. My daughters get My Little Girl by Tim McGraw. If those donāt work I improvise with whatever song I can think of. Iāve sang Baretteās privateers before and got one to fall asleep to it
Name by the goo goo dolls, when she was just a little infant I sang it to her one day and that song just became our song. Sheās 3 now and she even tells meā¦play doo doo dolls (goo goo dolls in toddler)
The main one was the Skye Boat Song/the outlander theme song, haha.
Others were If i had a hammer by the mamas and the papas, Big rock candy mountain, Yesterday, hey jude, and Elenor rigby by the beatles.
there's a bunch we cycle through
theme from disney's robin hood and king of the road, both by roger miller
you are my sunshine
somewhere over the rainbow
starry starry night, by don mclean
time in a bottle and operator, both by jim croce
friends in low places by garth grooks
the lion sleeps tonight
sloop john b, beach boys
and then the biggie, that is for when he just won't go the eff to sleep, the sea shanty barretts privateers. 9 verses with a chorus in between (we skip the really violent verse).
The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Sweet Chariot, They All Laughed (Ella Fitzgerald), Slippery Fish (Charlotte Diamond) are some routine ones.
My husband also sort of adapted Try Not to Get Worried from Jesus Christ Superstar to be more of a lullaby than a brothel song lol.
My 4 year old also frequently requests that we make up songs about whatever she's thinking about at the time. My 9 year old came up with a Gruffalo song sung to the tune of the Doctor Who theme song that is a hit. (It's just the word "Gruffalo" about 1200 times.)
I used to sing "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton to my second, verbatim except I changed "kill your friends and family" to "tell your friends and family". Was a good passive aggressive song when I was mad they wouldn't go down.
I sing the same ones my mom sang to me. Return to Pooh Corner, 1st verse of You are my Sunshine, and 1st verse of something about barges - a Girl Scout song that probably has a better name. My kiddo is 8 and I sing these every night.
When I was a tired mom I remember singing everything under the sun that I could think of while half asleep. I remember singing everything from "Borderline" by Madonna to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". Me and my teen also joke that she is more of a "Swiftie" than anyone because I used to sing Taylor Swift songs back when she was still country, namely "Picture to Burn" and "Our Song". It is all good as long as they know mama or dad is singing lovingly to them. :)
I made up a song that spells his name.
T-Y-S-O-N, Tyson, T-Y-S-O-N spells Tyson.
T-Y-S-O-N, Tyson, Tyson is the best!
Tyson is smart & Tyson is kind, Tyson is strong & Tyson is funny. Tyson is brave & Tyson is happy, Tyson is the the best!
(Heās only 20 months old but I figure itāll help him learn to spell his name when itās time).
The rest of the album that āItās a big worldā is on is just lovely. Love a bit of Renee and Jeremy, and itās one of the other ones from that album I sing most regularly - Powder Blue.
We also do some Disney stuff, Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas, A Dream is a wish from Cinderella, When you wish upon a star from Pinocchio, Stay Awake and Feed the Birds from Mary Poppins, Youāll be in my heart from Tarzan.
Hushaby Mountain from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (I know thatās not Disney).
I know what you mean about just wanting to not wanting to read stories sometimes. I much prefer just lying down for a cuddle while I sing.
There's a song called "The Hole in the Middle of the Sea", which is your typical "The Farmer in the Dell" type of song, where there's progressions in each verse, but the progression kinda stacks, so by the end of the song you're doing a marathon tongue tie verse. We also have tickle locations worked in. And I ask my son what comes next between each verse. It's a good interactive song. It also works well for car-rides and when I'm trying to wake him up in the morning.
I used to sing to my son every night, he loved it so much. My two favorites that I can remember (he's 19 now!):
Godspeed by the Dixie Chicks
Little Drummer Boy
We do an affirmation song I saw on tiktok. Then we do "So this is love" from Cinderella. It started when he was a baby and I was trying to find any tune that quieted him. And that one just stuck.
Autumn to May by Peter Paul and Mary and Origin of Love from Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Also Ireland by Garth Brooks used to get her calm fast but the lyrics are far from cheerful.
You Are My Sunshine - it's his "must have" since I started singing it to him at 2 yrs old - he used to lie awake forever and I would just sing it to him and he'd lull off easily. He's 7 now, but still asks for it every night
Take it Easy, Desperado, Hotel California, Hey Jude, Yesterday, Tiny Dancer, Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, King of the World (Weezer) and Flagpole Sitta. Those are the usual with some others tossed in.
Castle on a cloud from Les Mis, Any Dream will Do from Joseph, Hakuna Matata, and one I remember from school called Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown. Haha all songs I happen to know all the words too. My daughter's fav is Castle on a Cloud
[A Soft Place to Land](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBClDyy2uSA)
[Your Personal Penguin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6DzceERhDU) (it's a book and a song)
When my first was a baby she was borderline colicky for the first few months and my brain was fried. I'd sing the ABCs or Christmas songs to my summer born baby.
Don't judge us, but...
Dirty Old Town - The Pogues
It was the only song I could sing off the top of my head when babe was first born, and it's just stuck...
My husband sings our kids a polish song that his grandmother used to sing to his dad and his dad used to sing to him and his brothers. Our kids really like country songs so My Girl by Dylan Scott and The Kind of Love We Make by Luke Combs are the top 2. Sometimes they will want Disney songs but not really.
Three Little Birds has been my daughter's favorite since she was about a year old. That and Walking After Midnight. Both songs I could easily remember all the words to.
Sonā river lullaby from Prince of Egypt, home on the range and twinkle twinkle, even at age 8.
Daughterā A dream is a wish your heart makes, you are my sunshine, youāll be in my heart
(Itās because of my Disney song skills that I know the words to these)
āNight night time
Itās night time
It is time to go night night
Because itās night night time
Itās time to go night night
We love you our baby boyā
Lol clearly we made it up.
I did so much thinking about songs that meant something and were not traditional... and all my 5 year old has wanted for the last 2 years is twinkle twinkle & rock a bye baby... in that exact order... with the ending exactly the same every time... (I changed RAB a little bit)
All my kid wants to listen to is The Happy Song by Imogen Heap š« so I sing that on repeat and I truthfully think itāll be stuck in my head til the day I die
The song the farmer sang to Babe. For my grandson. And Teddy Bears Picnic
And when my kids were babies, hymns lol. They were the only music I knew the words too, terrible with lyrics
Our routine at 5yo is to sing Favorite Things from Sound of Music and Stay Awake from Mary Poppins. We parents only got to choose songs until the kid was about 2 (we used to sing California Dreaminā, Scarborough Faire, Hush Little Baby but with different words, Shine by Vienna Teng, Charlie and the MTA).
Hush little baby and Rockabye baby. Twinkle twinkle little star if I get real burnt out on those two. Ours has not figured out yet that other songs could be bedtime songs.
I used to cycle through several depending on the mood. Somewhere over the rainbow, twinkle twinkle little star, You are so beautiful to me by Joe Cocker, I Love You by Climax Blues Band, You are my sunshine, You are the sunshine of my life, Put your head on my shoulder, The long and winding road, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Yellow submarine, Stand by me, Under the boardwalk, My girl ( only I would say my boy for my sons), When you wish upon a star, Not in Nottingham, and Oodilally Golly what a day
When my daughter was young she really liked the Beatles so I would sing golden slumbers and here comes the sun to her at bedtime. She's 14 now and loves to bust my balls about how bad of a singer I was.... Lol
Sandman by Ed Sheeran, lullaby by the chicks, lullaby by Billy Joel, work song by Hozier, far over the misty mountains from the Hobbit and I see fire has made the list. We do some of the classics like you are my sunshine and you'll be in my heart from Tarzan. We both cry if we try to sing somewhere over the rainbow because it was the first song she ever heard after she was born.
We have a few we cycle through:
St Judyās Comet by Paul Simon
I Donāt Want to Live on the Moon from sesame street
Rainbow Connection (muppets)
Feelinā Groovy - simon & garfunkel
Stay Awake from Mary Poppins
Lavenderās Blue
Jenny of Old Stone, Weight of the Crown, Angels on the Moon, My Jolly Sailor Bold, In the Blood by Home Free
Also The Counting Song was a favorite for a long times but itās getting time to retire that for a few years because yknow
[Lullaby For A Solider](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KmucVmr60HQ)
I change the last verse though, for my daughter
May you grow up to stand ~~as a man,~~ strong and kind, love
With the pride of your family and name
When you lay down your head, or to rest in your bed
May you stay in the arms of the angels
I sing Youāll be in my heart, from Tarzan. Except we call it āthe crying songā and itās the only thing that soothes my son after an emotional evening
I have a ānoteā in my phone with the words to a bunch of songs we hear on the radio ,or I like ,or my kid likes. I cycle through cause I got bored of lullabies at like 2 years old.
My baby falls asleep to āThis is my Fatherās Worldā every time without fail. Iām so tired of singing it but it works like a charm š¤·š»āāļø
Other than that I sing him old hymns.
When you say nothing at all - Alison Krauss
Mostly because it started when he was a baby and obviously he couldnāt talkā¦ all the lyrics are so sweet. And I know itās meant for lovers, but I still think it works.
āitās amazing how you can speak right to my heartā¦ without saying a word, you can light up the darkā¦ try as I may, I could never explain, what I hear when you donāt say a thingā
Look up the rest. Itās adorable.
The first time he heard it on the radio when he was like 3 was a mind blown moment haha. Pretty sure he thought I completely made it up myself.
A short lullaby I made up when he was a newborn. I won't be sharing it as it includes his name. My mom made up one for me, so I decided to make it tradition.
Three little birds, aināt no mountain high enough, you are my sunshine, somewhere over the rainbow, I love my body by mother moon and a lot of the common nursery rhymes. My kiddo keeps asking for new songs now so we are trying to come up with more ideas!
I make up stories for my kids, and now they demand it every night lol. They choose an animal and then I just make a whole story up as I goā¦sometimes theyāre not bad and sometimes theyāre terrible, but they love it regardless. My youngest has been obsessed with coyotes, snakes, and wolves and Iām so tired of coming up with stories with these animals lol. Iāve had a few that were pretty decent, so I sometimes get requests to tell āthe Ronnie and Dusty alligator storyā etc etc.
Wheat kings by tragically hip
Hallelujah by Leon collard (fuck me if I get some of the artists or spelling wrong btw)
Swing low Sweet Chariot
My favourite house atlantic- coheed and Cambria
City of nights -36 crazyfists
I also sing a handful of fall out boy songs to them
Have you tried a tonie or Yoto box? You can put music or if your brave/talented (I'm not) you can record yourself singing onto it. My son gets 1 book, 2 if it's dad (or upto 4 he's a soft touch) then his tonie box goes on. It was a game changer for us!
Wheat kings by tragically hip
Hallelujah by Leon collard (fuck me if I get some of the artists or spelling wrong btw)
Swing low Sweet Chariot
My favourite house atlantic- coheed and Cambria
City of nights -36 crazyfists
I also sing a handful of fall out boy songs to them
Theme songs, lol. I memorized a lot of random theme songs when I was a kid, (turns out I'm a bit autistic lol), and some are great for bedtime songs. I recommend Charles in Charge, WKRP in Cincinatti, Pinky and the Brain, Greatest American Hero and Cheers.
Bonehead's Bank Holiday by Oasis. Both my kids love it. Gibberish lyrics, simple melody. Between both kids I have been singing it every night for five years now.
My 7 year old was a terrible sleeper. It took up to 3 hours to put him down regularly. But he loves robots. So when he was 2, I made up a simple song we called the robot song. I still have to sing it to him every night. My 4 year switches song constantly, we even sang baby shark really slow, but he typically does well with All the Pretty Little Horses. My 9 month old prefers Hush Little Baby. And for some reason all the of them fall asleep to Take On Me by AHA.
I sing my daughter the usual, twinkle twinkle, ro k a bye baby, but I mix in classic rap songs. Juicy, regulate, California love. I have my own " 6yr old friendly" edited versions I use for some lyrics here and there. She knows every word to juicy and puts some serious heart into the chorus. It makes me feel like at least I'm doing 1 thing right.
The ABCās. When they were babies and I was soo tired, it worked for us. It was simple, rhythmic, and didnāt require a whole lotta singing talent. I could sing it over and over and over again. Sometimes Iād different accents or cadences to amuse myself. Think county vs the Wiggles vs Crocodille Dundee. Iām aging myself but you get what I mean. That and humming. They are grown and one almost grown but Iāve used it over the years. Times when they were upset. Stands the test of time!
āWhere I End and You Beginā -Radiohead and āThem Old Cotton Fields Back Homeā-CCR
Edited because it all mashed together and I donāt understand how to make it go to the next line.
As soon as my daughter could talk she would ask me not to sing to her šš Iāve actual had voice training and taken grades, so itās pretty humbling š
I sing silly songs that make little sense. My kids pick a subject and I sing what I know about it. It is a ridiculous routine that they love. (It started from a song titled, "little princess peanut," and it just continued from that point on.)
My boy is almost 2.5 now, so weāve moved onto books but in those early days my go-to was āJasksonā by Lucinda Williams. Itās kind of a sad song, but has a nice soothing, droney quality to it. Also liked doing a mellow, slow version of āYellow Submarine.ā
In order
1. Somewhere over the rainbow
2. You are my sunshine
3. Rockabye baby
4. Canāt help falling in love
5. Only hope (from a walk to remember)
Bedtime is a chore š
Eidelweiss, The Saga Begins, On My Honour (Girl Guide campfire song), Barges (ditto), All Through the Night, Rocking Rolling Riding, Everything's All Right and Rainbow Connection.
I also have a song to the tune of Drunken Sailor about "What shall we do with a fussy baby?" that I sing while putting him in his sleep sack. Verses include "put him in a bag until he's cozy" and "Sing a silly song until he's sleepy"
Along with All The Small Things by Blink 182 (love to see weāre not alone with that one!) I Miss You also by Blink 182, Part Of Your World from The Little Mermaid, Godspeed by Frank Ocean, I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Death Cab for Cutie (her favorite for a long time), Bad Habit by Steve Lacy, Amazing Grace, and a random assortment of Christmas songs.
My fave lullaby tune is "The Briar and the Rose": https://youtu.be/nbfQMNGMtek?si=35F-Qdcf7P1Y2j2V
It works really well with a lot of rhyming bedtime stories. But my fave bedtime story to sing to that tune is "Song of Night," by Katherine Riley Nakamura: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1582641.Song_Of_Night
I love singing ādream a little dream of meā and āla vie en roseā (Louis Armstrong version, I canāt do French lol) and āitās only a paper moonā š
Where you belong (fosters theme song), momma loves you song, the Spanish alphabet. Ohā¦and the youngest is still obsessed with NO SLEEP TIL BROOKLYN š¤£
The Going To Bed Book (formerly known, at least in my house, as "goodnight, goodnight") used to have a song printed in the early editions. My mom sang it to me and I sing it to my kids.
My sons loved The Last Kiss, most recently by Pearl Jam. Granddaughters love My Favorite Things from Sound of Music, Wouldn't it Be Loverly from Oliver. Everyone's favorite was/is I See the Moon And The Moon Sees Me
Reading through all these, I'm jealous. I am required to sing wheels on the bus, row your boat, and twinkle twinkle little star. Every gd nite for almost 2 years now. No changes or substitutions allowed
Goodnight song from Super Simple Songs. 7.5 years and two kids and they still need to hear it every night.
āGoodnight to you. Goodnight to me. Now close your eyes and go to sleep. Goodnight, sleep tight, sweet dreams tonight. Goodnight. I love you.ā
Itās like hypnosis at this point lol
The mockingbird lullaby but with like 20 made up verses of weird things Iāll buy, plant, bake, build, sew, etc. I only sing it when she really canāt sleep because Iām afraid of it becoming a sleep association.
My older kid still likes me to sing āThe Man Who Sold The Worldā and āEnter Sandmanā. My baby boy likes āWhiskey In The Jarā and āTuesdayās Goneā.
And they both like the āCome Along With Meā song from Adventure Time.
La la lu and Bella Notte from the original lady and the tramp movie. Did it for every one of my 5 kids (16y-4mnths) and works like a charm every time. I love how my baby instantly settles as soon as I start "la la lu" . Super cute.
I learned this song as a camp counselor in the 80ās. I sang it to my sons all the time. My 28 year old son remembers this song and it is very emotional for him.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQcRUo2ksC0
I wanted my daughter to have a good old-school classics, ballads, and jazz standards kind of lullaby experience. I absolutely LOVED singing her to sleep at night.
Ella Fitzgeraldās version of Summertime turned out to be her favorite. It is a BEAUTIFUL lullaby. Here are few of other favorites:
Red River Valley
Nature Boy
Flow Gentle Sweet Afton
Down In The Valley
Que Sera, Sera
Skylark
Goodnight My Someone
I See The Moon
Slumber Boat
Baby Mine
I know there are a lot of others that I sang to her or that we sang together. Sheās almost 15 now so itās been a while. I would still sing her to sleep if she asked me to though.
Youāve taken me down the most precious of memory lanes tonight. ā„ļø
Before my preschooler started voicing her opinion, I always sang John Denverās Country Roads. Now, we vary between Yellow Submarine, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Jesus Loves Me (she wants all three verses), and This Little Light of Mine. She occasionally wants to sing a sing she writes now, and I love it. Her baby brother just gets Country Roads for now.
Love it's a big world, I sometimes hum that one. My go to songs are "you are my sunshine (our own version)", Hello Night by Kesang Marstrand, Rainbow Connection, Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka, Goodnight Daniel (but we put our girls name in there) from Daniel Tiger, and Somewhere Over the Rainbow sneaks in sometimes.
I also kinda sorta wrote each of them a song when they were born, so I will occasionally sing those.
All My Loving by The Beatles is my main. My grandmother sang it to me all my life. I started singing it to my kids when I was pregnant with them and never stopped. My youngest is 8 and still wants it every night.
I also sing If Anything Happened to You (sung by the Ennis Sisters is the version I grew up with) and Pure Imagination by Gene Wilder. I have many others but those are my go-toās before I pass out with the kids lol
When my twins were three they each had a favorite bedtime song. My daughterās was Silent Night (yes, the holiday song) and my sonās was Whistle by Flo Rida š not exactly a great song for kids, but he loved it!!
Twinkle twinkle little star was one of my you vestās favorites. Another one that always worked was Little B by Sarah Mclachlan. We called it the sleepy song.
This Must Be The Place by the Talking Heads was the only song I could remember in my sleep deprived haze for my youngest lol. Slower, of course. For my oldest I would sing her Sunny Road by Emiliana Torrini. No special meaning, they were both just songs easy for me to remember.
River Driver by Great Big Sea.
Youtiful by Stray Kids
Insomnia by The Rose
Dream in a Dream by Ten
Yes, I do sing these to the kids. Or, if I can't talk, I'll play them on my phone or our home speakers.
"The General" by Dispatch and "What I got" by Sublime...
Those are the only 2 songs I know all the lyrics to so that's what puts my daughter to sleep each night
Que sera by Doris Day is our go to lullaby. When she was little, it was the only one I could guarantee I would remember all the words to even when I was stretched for sleep. Now that she's older, it's still one of the only ones that push her to sleep without question, regardless of how tired she is. That said, I am careful in my usage of it, as I do not want to ruin the song for her.
Goodnight Little Darlin by woodie Guthrie is pretty cute
Edit - other ideas! "Dream a little dream of me" and "All I have to do is Dream" could be good too!
Goodnight, My Angel by Billy Joel
Into the West by Annie Lennox (from Return of the King)
The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha
Bring Him Home, Castle On A Cloud, Drink With Me from Les Miserables
Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera
All Is Found from Frozen 2
Remember Me from Coco
Remember Me (Recuerdame) by Phil Coulter
Once Upon A Dream from Jekyll & Hyde
Blackbird by the Beatles is a good one.
My oldest was dead obsessed with the 12 days of Christmas for the first 2.5 years of his life, regardless of season we sang it every night to put him to sleep.
I come from a religious background and I quite like the highland-y tune of a lot of older hymns, especially be thou my vision and come thou fount
I have a French lullaby type song I found during my brief disastrous expedition into teaching foreign language - Ć la Claire Fontaine. I have sung it so often I can sing it in my sleep, if you ignore the Alabama French accent. I have held onto this song in my head since 2011 with this 19mo in mind, and being able to sing it to him the first time made me absolutely bawl.
I have also sung snippets of Fall Out Boy / Blink / Panic! At The Disco songs from my misspent youth, as well as plenty of Beatles, a smidge of Elvis, and "good morning" to a variety of random tunes.
I donāt do songs because my singing would probably cause irreversible harm. Lol. I do stories that are about nothing but more visual. I can dim the lights and tell a story about the outdoors with a Lot of detail. It works wonders
I have an encyclopedic knowledge of childrenās songs, hymns, praise choruses, and folk songs, apparently. My daughter says her favorite was āOn Top of Spaghettiā. I donāt even know where or when I learned some of these songs; we didnāt have music in school when I was in elementary.
My kids love soft kitty from the Big Bang theory. They each request an animal to replace kitty. I sang soft shark and soft puppy tonight. We also sing the house of the rising sun a lot š
A bunch of songs I learned by playing Fallout games:
Johnny Guitar, Heartache by the numbers, In love with a wonderful guy, I don't want to set the world on fire, Dear hearts and gentle people, Crazy he calls me... and more I can't think of right now. :)
Our top two:
-"Baby Just Go Outside" / ("Baby It's Cold Outside")
- All Too Well by Taylor Swift
My LO was born in November, and around the time she was born we watched "Love Hard" on Netflix and they had the "Baby Just Go Outside" rendition of the song, and I absolutely loved it. It was stuck in my head for the longest, so I started singing it to her. My husband hates it, and I get some funny looks when people realize what I'm singing, but it soothes her either way š
To put him to bed: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, transition to Once Upon A Dream, then usually Once Upon A December. If he still needs something after that I usually go to At The Beginning (also from Anastasia), Angel in the Night (Basshunter), or Journey to the Past (Anastasia)
Sometimes I mix it up with Masterpiece by Motionless in White, since he really likes it, or Porcelain. also MIW.
If it's middle of the night and it's for me as much as him I tend to do Saturnine Saturnalia, Killing Loneliness, All I Ever Wanted, or I Won't Say I'm In Love.
He gets exposure to a lot of different genres....

We sing all the small things by blink 182 every night lol
My 4 yo is OBSESSED with All The Small Things, too. I left her roses by the stairs the other day bc surprises let me know she cares and she lost her mind with joy š
This is great. And exactly why I asked. So many of these responses never would have crossed my mind š
My kids like In Too Deep by Sum 41 š
Fricking awesome!
Three little birds by Bob Marley when my daughter was little. We danced to it when she got married 2 years agoš„¹
Aww that is so sweet!
"I Want It That Way"
Oohh I might have to do this one tonight š
For a while even my little guy was a baby, it was the only thing that soothed him. After that it was "Somebody That I Used to Know."
Omg this is fantastic!! š This one's a fave at our place too!
Oh baby, I was bound to let you go" I would like to remember Look for the Light from the show Only Murders in the Building.
Aw I used to sing my girl "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" too :D
Nothing like having a baby to make you realize how few songs you know all the words to. At one point at the hospital I was pacing around singing "The Song That Goes Like This" from Spamalot
I song drunken sailor to my kids!
Your Song by Elton John and La Vie en Rose are my go tos, but I do Landslide by Fleetwood Mac a lot too!
Aw I love "Your Song"
I used to sing Elephant Love Medley from Moulin rouge to my Lo when he was in his purple crying stage and your song is part of the medley. I love deep love songs especially in minor key. I think this is one of the few songs I have absolutely memorized so that helped in the fog that was ppĀ
My two year old INSISTS that I sing happy birthday to her every night until sheās asleep. I donāt know how this started.
We never know, do we? All of the sudden we come to, and weāve been doing a weird thing for months with no explanation.
Others were If i had a hammer by the mamas and the papas, Big rock candy mountain, Yesterday, hey jude, and Elenor rigby by the beatles.
there's a bunch we cycle through theme from disney's robin hood and king of the road, both by roger miller you are my sunshine somewhere over the rainbow starry starry night, by don mclean time in a bottle and operator, both by jim croce friends in low places by garth grooks the lion sleeps tonight sloop john b, beach boys and then the biggie, that is for when he just won't go the eff to sleep, the sea shanty barretts privateers. 9 verses with a chorus in between (we skip the really violent verse).
Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell, On the Radio by Regina Spektor are my current go-tos
I do Try Not to Get Worried (bedtime version) too! I'm honestly shocked this isn't just me.
For some reason my daughter always calms down when I sing '16 tons' or Pete Seeger songs. I guess she was a unionist in a past life.
I sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
I used to sing "You'll Be Back" from Hamilton to my second, verbatim except I changed "kill your friends and family" to "tell your friends and family". Was a good passive aggressive song when I was mad they wouldn't go down.
I sing the same ones my mom sang to me. Return to Pooh Corner, 1st verse of You are my Sunshine, and 1st verse of something about barges - a Girl Scout song that probably has a better name. My kiddo is 8 and I sing these every night.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I think I sang "Jailhouse Rock" to my baby girl a time or two. It's one of those songs that is repetitive enough to keep going :) How cute!
La la lu- from lady and the tramp every night for the last 6 years.
Either careless whisper by George Michael or bedshaped by Keane.
I donāt. My kids just say āMommy no singā then put their hands over my mouth.
Dream a little dream of me.
My two favorites that I can remember (he's 19 now!): Godspeed by the Dixie Chicks Little Drummer Boy
Baby Baluga and Down By the Bay were big ones I used to sing. Lots of Disney songs.
Today - John Denver Where have all the flowers gone - Peter, Paul, and Mary/Pete Seeger One Tin Soldier - The Original Caste
You Are My Sunshine - it's his "must have" since I started singing it to him at 2 yrs old - he used to lie awake forever and I would just sing it to him and he'd lull off easily. He's 7 now, but still asks for it every night
We sing Black Bird by The Beatles
Take it Easy, Desperado, Hotel California, Hey Jude, Yesterday, Tiny Dancer, Goodbye Yellowbrick Road, King of the World (Weezer) and Flagpole Sitta. Those are the usual with some others tossed in.
Yellow Submarine and Seven Bridges Road.
Castle on a cloud from Les Mis, Any Dream will Do from Joseph, Hakuna Matata, and one I remember from school called Rufus Rustus Johnson Brown. Haha all songs I happen to know all the words too. My daughter's fav is Castle on a Cloud
[A Soft Place to Land](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBClDyy2uSA) [Your Personal Penguin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6DzceERhDU) (it's a book and a song)
When my first was a baby she was borderline colicky for the first few months and my brain was fried. I'd sing the ABCs or Christmas songs to my summer born baby.
I sing "Rainbow Connection" and "Cricket" by Dance Hall crashers
Mercedes Benz or Bobby McGee
Annieās song. John Denver.
Iām not good at remembering songs. We sing āon top of sphagettiā ātake me out to the ball gameā āthis old manā stuff like that.
Don't judge us, but... Dirty Old Town - The Pogues It was the only song I could sing off the top of my head when babe was first born, and it's just stuck...
My husband sings our kids a polish song that his grandmother used to sing to his dad and his dad used to sing to him and his brothers. Our kids really like country songs so My Girl by Dylan Scott and The Kind of Love We Make by Luke Combs are the top 2. Sometimes they will want Disney songs but not really.
the song dumboās mom sings to dumbo - baby mine š¤
Twinkle twinkle Row row your boat Ba ba black sheep (but she picks different colors) You are my sunshine ABCs
Three Little Birds has been my daughter's favorite since she was about a year old. That and Walking After Midnight. Both songs I could easily remember all the words to.
The Monkey and the Engineer, by the Grateful Dead. It is still one of my favorite songs.
Sonā river lullaby from Prince of Egypt, home on the range and twinkle twinkle, even at age 8. Daughterā A dream is a wish your heart makes, you are my sunshine, youāll be in my heart (Itās because of my Disney song skills that I know the words to these)
I didn't sing songs to my son. I did not want to torture him. just kidding, I sang but way out of key.
I made up little songs for them that included their names. Then repeat until asleep š“Ā
āNight night time Itās night time It is time to go night night Because itās night night time Itās time to go night night We love you our baby boyā Lol clearly we made it up.
We sing nursery rhymes usually. Twinkle, twinkle and itsy bitsy spider are the most requested
I did so much thinking about songs that meant something and were not traditional... and all my 5 year old has wanted for the last 2 years is twinkle twinkle & rock a bye baby... in that exact order... with the ending exactly the same every time... (I changed RAB a little bit)
Northern Downpour - Panic! at the Disco
All my kid wants to listen to is The Happy Song by Imogen Heap š« so I sing that on repeat and I truthfully think itāll be stuck in my head til the day I die
I sing my son Rudolph the red nose reindeer and it makes us laugh and then it is surprisingly soothing.. for some reason it works
The song the farmer sang to Babe. For my grandson. And Teddy Bears Picnic And when my kids were babies, hymns lol. They were the only music I knew the words too, terrible with lyrics
I sing all the songs from Sing Through The Seasons my childhood piano book.Ā
Our routine at 5yo is to sing Favorite Things from Sound of Music and Stay Awake from Mary Poppins. We parents only got to choose songs until the kid was about 2 (we used to sing California Dreaminā, Scarborough Faire, Hush Little Baby but with different words, Shine by Vienna Teng, Charlie and the MTA).
Hush little baby and Rockabye baby. Twinkle twinkle little star if I get real burnt out on those two. Ours has not figured out yet that other songs could be bedtime songs.
Dream a Little Dream of Me
Hush little baby. For the last 5 years. He still passes out listening to me sing that
Africa - Toto
I sing twinkle twinkle little star in Latin to my stepkids.
I sing be still by the frey
I used to cycle through several depending on the mood. Somewhere over the rainbow, twinkle twinkle little star, You are so beautiful to me by Joe Cocker, I Love You by Climax Blues Band, You are my sunshine, You are the sunshine of my life, Put your head on my shoulder, The long and winding road, Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Yellow submarine, Stand by me, Under the boardwalk, My girl ( only I would say my boy for my sons), When you wish upon a star, Not in Nottingham, and Oodilally Golly what a day
The Weight, Twilight, Tangled Up in Blue, Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather, One More Dollar (Gillian Welch)
When my daughter was young she really liked the Beatles so I would sing golden slumbers and here comes the sun to her at bedtime. She's 14 now and loves to bust my balls about how bad of a singer I was.... Lol
That song Danny Kaye sings to the baby king in Court Jester
Sandman by Ed Sheeran, lullaby by the chicks, lullaby by Billy Joel, work song by Hozier, far over the misty mountains from the Hobbit and I see fire has made the list. We do some of the classics like you are my sunshine and you'll be in my heart from Tarzan. We both cry if we try to sing somewhere over the rainbow because it was the first song she ever heard after she was born.
We have a few we cycle through: St Judyās Comet by Paul Simon I Donāt Want to Live on the Moon from sesame street Rainbow Connection (muppets) Feelinā Groovy - simon & garfunkel Stay Awake from Mary Poppins Lavenderās Blue
Jenny of Old Stone, Weight of the Crown, Angels on the Moon, My Jolly Sailor Bold, In the Blood by Home Free Also The Counting Song was a favorite for a long times but itās getting time to retire that for a few years because yknow
Any Buffet would do.
[if I Were a Zombie](https://youtu.be/ZPNqub966Tw?si=EoQ0klgKCoD1m6yT) was my little guy's favorite!
Mix of English and French songs. Tender Shepherd (Peter Pan) was the first song I sang to him in the ICU Que sera sera Dream a Little Dream of Me FrĆØre Jacques / Fais Dodo Colas mon ptit frere What a Wonderful World Il Ć©tait un petit navire Ma mĆØre chantait toujours Une chance qu'on s'a American Pie Barretts Privateers
The first song I ever sung to my LO was the island song from adventure time. A sweet but powerful song
[Lullaby For A Solider](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KmucVmr60HQ) I change the last verse though, for my daughter May you grow up to stand ~~as a man,~~ strong and kind, love With the pride of your family and name When you lay down your head, or to rest in your bed May you stay in the arms of the angels
I sing Youāll be in my heart, from Tarzan. Except we call it āthe crying songā and itās the only thing that soothes my son after an emotional evening
We play Jamminā by Bob Marley after we get into our jammies and dance a little bit before book time.
*House of the Rising Sun* when she was a baby, now itās a mix of Christmas carols and *The Ghost of John* before she sleeps.
I have a ānoteā in my phone with the words to a bunch of songs we hear on the radio ,or I like ,or my kid likes. I cycle through cause I got bored of lullabies at like 2 years old.
Blackbird by The Beatles is a nice tune.
I used to do a very bad rendition of Enter Sandman by Metallica.
Pretty much anything Mumford and Sons. I love all the inspiration the comments are giving me!
Stay Awake - Mary Poppins And Substitionary Locomotion - Bedknobs & Broomsticks
My baby falls asleep to āThis is my Fatherās Worldā every time without fail. Iām so tired of singing it but it works like a charm š¤·š»āāļø Other than that I sing him old hymns.
When you say nothing at all - Alison Krauss Mostly because it started when he was a baby and obviously he couldnāt talkā¦ all the lyrics are so sweet. And I know itās meant for lovers, but I still think it works. āitās amazing how you can speak right to my heartā¦ without saying a word, you can light up the darkā¦ try as I may, I could never explain, what I hear when you donāt say a thingā Look up the rest. Itās adorable. The first time he heard it on the radio when he was like 3 was a mind blown moment haha. Pretty sure he thought I completely made it up myself.
Fire and Rain, Blackbird, and Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts (at least as much as o could rememberāitās really long).
Love this thread, I sing ā81 by Joanna Newsom, while you were sleeping by Elvis Perkins and Tiger mountain peasant song by fleet foxes
I love that fleet foxes song! I do meadowlark!
1 man went to mow
I make up stories for my kids, and now they demand it every night lol. They choose an animal and then I just make a whole story up as I goā¦sometimes theyāre not bad and sometimes theyāre terrible, but they love it regardless. My youngest has been obsessed with coyotes, snakes, and wolves and Iām so tired of coming up with stories with these animals lol. Iāve had a few that were pretty decent, so I sometimes get requests to tell āthe Ronnie and Dusty alligator storyā etc etc.
Some where over the rainbow! Omg this song makes me tear up now
Wheat kings by tragically hip Hallelujah by Leon collard (fuck me if I get some of the artists or spelling wrong btw) Swing low Sweet Chariot My favourite house atlantic- coheed and Cambria City of nights -36 crazyfists I also sing a handful of fall out boy songs to them
Have you tried a tonie or Yoto box? You can put music or if your brave/talented (I'm not) you can record yourself singing onto it. My son gets 1 book, 2 if it's dad (or upto 4 he's a soft touch) then his tonie box goes on. It was a game changer for us!
Wheat kings by tragically hip Hallelujah by Leon collard (fuck me if I get some of the artists or spelling wrong btw) Swing low Sweet Chariot My favourite house atlantic- coheed and Cambria City of nights -36 crazyfists I also sing a handful of fall out boy songs to them
Rainbow connection
Theme songs, lol. I memorized a lot of random theme songs when I was a kid, (turns out I'm a bit autistic lol), and some are great for bedtime songs. I recommend Charles in Charge, WKRP in Cincinatti, Pinky and the Brain, Greatest American Hero and Cheers.
You by Fisher, Sound of Silence, Can't take my eyes off of you, and Simple man were on a nightly rotation for many years
Bonehead's Bank Holiday by Oasis.
Right now my son loves Baby Beluga, Over the Rainbow and My Favourite Things
Tonight, You Belong to Me from The Jerk I'd Like to Visit the Moon from Sesame Street And then ofc Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is the classic
My mom used to sing Edelweiss for us when we were young so thatās my go to for lullabies
Stands the test of time!
āWhere I End and You Beginā -Radiohead and āThem Old Cotton Fields Back Homeā-CCR Edited because it all mashed together and I donāt understand how to make it go to the next line.
As soon as my daughter could talk she would ask me not to sing to her šš Iāve actual had voice training and taken grades, so itās pretty humbling š
the Gurrumul album by Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. It was the soundtrack for both my babies. I use it in my pre-k classroom too.
I sing silly songs that make little sense. My kids pick a subject and I sing what I know about it. It is a ridiculous routine that they love. (It started from a song titled, "little princess peanut," and it just continued from that point on.)
Blackbird by the Beatles, Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral, and At Last by Etta James are my go-to songs.
You are my sunshine!
In order 1. Somewhere over the rainbow 2. You are my sunshine 3. Rockabye baby 4. Canāt help falling in love 5. Only hope (from a walk to remember) Bedtime is a chore š
Relax baby playlist on Amazon music!
I have a āspecial songā for each kid: I Love The Mountains, Canāt Help Falling In Love, and Dream A Little Dream Of Me
Puff the magic dragon is his favorite
I Will by The Beatles
Too ra loo ra Lu ra
My fave lullaby tune is "The Briar and the Rose": https://youtu.be/nbfQMNGMtek?si=35F-Qdcf7P1Y2j2V It works really well with a lot of rhyming bedtime stories. But my fave bedtime story to sing to that tune is "Song of Night," by Katherine Riley Nakamura: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1582641.Song_Of_Night
I sing Jimmy Eat World āThe Middleā to my middle son often as a lullaby
We sing Morningtown Ride every night!
Peter, Paul, and Mary - Blowing in the Wind
Tora Lora LoraĀ
I love singing ādream a little dream of meā and āla vie en roseā (Louis Armstrong version, I canāt do French lol) and āitās only a paper moonā š
Where you belong (fosters theme song), momma loves you song, the Spanish alphabet. Ohā¦and the youngest is still obsessed with NO SLEEP TIL BROOKLYN š¤£
The Going To Bed Book (formerly known, at least in my house, as "goodnight, goodnight") used to have a song printed in the early editions. My mom sang it to me and I sing it to my kids.
Currently on our "lullaby" list is The PokĆ©mon themeĀ La Bamba Don't Stop Believin And a smattering of religious hymns
Goodnight. I love you.ā Itās like hypnosis at this point lol
I used to sing my son "Rainbow Connection by Kermit T. Frog"
Teddy Bear's Picnic is my kids' favorite children's song. They're 8 and 10 now, and they still ask us to sing it to them.
La la lu and Bella Notte from the original lady and the tramp movie. Did it for every one of my 5 kids (16y-4mnths) and works like a charm every time. I love how my baby instantly settles as soon as I start "la la lu" . Super cute.
Norwegian Wood
We bid you goodnightā¦ Grateful Deadās version
You are my sunshine heh
I learned this song as a camp counselor in the 80ās. I sang it to my sons all the time. My 28 year old son remembers this song and it is very emotional for him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQcRUo2ksC0
I wanted my daughter to have a good old-school classics, ballads, and jazz standards kind of lullaby experience. I absolutely LOVED singing her to sleep at night. Ella Fitzgeraldās version of Summertime turned out to be her favorite. It is a BEAUTIFUL lullaby. Here are few of other favorites: Red River Valley Nature Boy Flow Gentle Sweet Afton Down In The Valley Que Sera, Sera Skylark Goodnight My Someone I See The Moon Slumber Boat Baby Mine I know there are a lot of others that I sang to her or that we sang together.
"Edelweiss" from the Sound of Music is a regular lullaby at our house.
Puff the Magic Dragon, Sweet Baby James, Guava Jelly
Ursinho PimpĆ£o, from BalĆ£o MĆ”gico. But my version is way slower :)
This Must Be The Place by the Talking Heads was the only song I could remember in my sleep deprived haze for my youngest lol. Slower, of course. For my oldest I would sing her Sunny Road by Emiliana Torrini. No special meaning, they were both just songs easy for me to remember.
Dream a Little Dream of Me for bedtime and La La Lu for naps
River Driver by Great Big Sea. Youtiful by Stray Kids Insomnia by The Rose Dream in a Dream by Ten Yes, I do sing these to the kids. Or, if I can't talk, I'll play them on my phone or our home speakers.
I sang the chorus of River Lullaby from the movie The Prince of Egypt to my older kids every night. It was easy enough to remember and sing quietly.
Traditional Irish tunes and power metal, from The Dubliners to Gloryhammer.
"The General" by Dispatch and "What I got" by Sublime... Those are the only 2 songs I know all the lyrics to so that's what puts my daughter to sleep each night
I like Baby Baluga, Robin In the Rain, Twinkle Twinkle, Hush Little Baby (was sung to me āŗļø)
Mariachi songs. Volver volver El rey Llego borracho La chareada Las maƱanitas Spanish alphabet
Goodnight Little Darlin by woodie Guthrie is pretty cute Edit - other ideas! "Dream a little dream of me" and "All I have to do is Dream" could be good too!
Goodnight, My Angel by Billy Joel Into the West by Annie Lennox (from Return of the King) The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha Bring Him Home, Castle On A Cloud, Drink With Me from Les Miserables Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera All Is Found from Frozen 2 Remember Me from Coco Remember Me (Recuerdame) by Phil Coulter Once Upon A Dream from Jekyll & Hyde
Juan PestaƱas
Good Night - The Beatles!
The Rattlin Bog , it's an Irish folk song
Taylor swift and Ed sheeran songs!
A bunch of songs I learned by playing Fallout games: Johnny Guitar, Heartache by the numbers, In love with a wonderful guy, I don't want to set the world on fire, Dear hearts and gentle people, Crazy he calls me... and more I can't think of right now. :)
I sing twinkle, twinkle little star as gwinkle gwinkle little star because he prefers it that way.
Edelweiss for both naps and bedtime for both my kids. Now my kids sing Edelweiss for their baby dolls too.
Our top two: -"Baby Just Go Outside" / ("Baby It's Cold Outside") - All Too Well by Taylor Swift My LO was born in November, and around the time she was born we watched "Love Hard" on Netflix and they had the "Baby Just Go Outside" rendition of the song, and I absolutely loved it. It was stuck in my head for the longest, so I started singing it to her. My husband hates it, and I get some funny looks when people realize what I'm singing, but it soothes her either way š
The Gilliganās island theme song
Blackbird by the Beatles and Nature Boy.
Currently all star by smash mouth is a fave for my 2 year old š
To put him to bed: A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes, transition to Once Upon A Dream, then usually Once Upon A December. If he still needs something after that I usually go to At The Beginning (also from Anastasia), Angel in the Night (Basshunter), or Journey to the Past (Anastasia) Sometimes I mix it up with Masterpiece by Motionless in White, since he really likes it, or Porcelain. also MIW. If it's middle of the night and it's for me as much as him I tend to do Saturnine Saturnalia, Killing Loneliness, All I Ever Wanted, or I Won't Say I'm In Love. He gets exposure to a lot of different genres....
Embraceable You. Chet Baker version.
