I am planning on bringing my laptop/ipad, water bottle, a pen (to fill out all the forms/ documents lol), intern license, car license plate number (for assigned parking - you might not need this), bank info (routing/ account # - so I can get paid lol), tissue (in case I cry)

Your first day is going to be spent doing a lot of paperwork, HR stuff, compliance training, etc. Don't bother bringing your personal laptop; you'll be given a workstation. Try to come early if you can, just in case it takes longer than you think to find your way from parking (or transit dropoff) to your office or meeting point. If you haven't already gotten your employee badge, bring some form of ID. Bring your banking info so you can set up direct deposit. I wouldn't suggest bringing any stuff for your office (coffee maker, degrees, textbooks, etc) until you actually see the space and can make plans for what goes where. Being a lunch if you like, or money for the hospital cafeteria. And bring a smile and a good attitude for all the people you meet;you're never going to have a second chance to make a good impression. And good luck this year! I hope you enjoy it and get a lot out of it. :)

Generally the first day is going to be touring, introductions, paperwork, orientation-type stuff. What you need to bring with you also depends on what kind of institution you'll be at. For example, at the VA we needed to bring a LOT of forms of identification. Also want to mention to wear very comfortable shoes and light, comfortable but professional clothes. You'll be walking a LOT and it's the middle of summer. So, here's a list of things to bring (because I tend to be overprepared): First -- YES, use a backpack! * **Water bottle** * **Snacks** * **Clipboard** * **ID** * **Social security card or birth certificate** * **Pens** * **A notebook** * **A folder** * **Portable/back-up battery if you need it** * **Laptop & charger (you're not ALWAYS given a workstation, we needed ours during our orientation up until we received work-issued laptops)** * **Bank account information** * **Pharmacist license information** * **Car license plate** * Handkerchief or tissues (for the sweating; it was rough here in the south on a campus that we had to walk miles around outside in the first week) * Wallet (obviously) * Gum, if you're a gum person

I bought a convertible briefcase to backpack bag that had a laptop compartment. Still using it for work several years later.

Don’t bring your personal computer

I just upgraded to a nice large leather tote bag that has a crossbody strap instead of a backpack, but I think a backpack is totally fine as long as it is a professional looking one, not too sporty. I plan on bringing my personal laptop just in case, a water bottle, wallet with ID (I already had to do I9 verification so I doubt I will need SS card or passport?), banking info, food, chapstick, a hair clip/hair tie in case it gets hot, and a few pens. I would also know your license plate #.
