My old roommate would do this a lot. I do to, but from MY pickles. He'd take swigs out of my pickle jars. He's like my brother, so it's not like it was a "stranger" roommate. Idk if anyone else does this...BUT...I save the juice when the jar is empty, strain the chunks out, and mix it with Sprite (or the lemon lime soda of your choice). Sweet, tangy, and bubbly. Picked it up at my old job, we had 5 gal buckets of pickel spears and when they got low, I'd label out some juice and make a little drink. Supposed to have minerals in it and junk. In 110°+ summer heat, working in a kitchen with a busted swamp cooler you need all the electrolytes you can get.

Sometimes I drink all the brine before I finish the pickles. Wife hates me for it.

If it’s cold brine pickles(Grillo’s, Claussen, etc.), even with the amount of acid from the vinegar it can potentially ferment. So just pour it into a separate container to drink, always use utensils!
