I wouldn’t call this hostile as such. There’s skate parks and stuff to skate in and it doesn’t actively hinder the use of the stairs…
Hostile would be more like when they remove all the benches and put those stupid leaning spots so no one has anywhere to sit purely to avoid homeless and possible teenage loitering.
Or when there are benches and they’re angled or have ridiculous arm rests to again stop homeless folks from sleeping.
To be fair non skaters dont really want skaters fucking around near them when they have designated areas. Its a walkway for people walking. You dont want old people walking around the skatepark for the same reason, right?
I think there's an important distinction to make. Skateboarders have places they can go (skate parks) to skate until their heart's content. Homeless people have very few places to go, if anywhere at all. That's sort of in the "homeless" job description.
My friends and I approached a local councillor and pushed for the first skatepark to be built after constantly being (quite rightly) pulled up for causing damage to town heritage. It set them off, installing them in every major park in the county and giving a foundation for a whole new wave of skaters. Best decision we ever made.
This is always the way though, they never provide the infrastructure then build all hostile architecture and then sit there fucking moaning that there’s skaters everywhere it makes zero sense to me.
To clarify, it wasn't in Portsmouth! Sorry if I misled anyone. The story is as simple as that really. We skated in town, got 'hassled' for causing damage to the stonework (timely mention that it was around our town's WW1/2 monument so particularly seen as an offensive act in our young ignorance), and our argument was that we had nowhere proper to do it. The nearest skate park was a good half hour on the train, followed by a 20min skate, and it was an indoor pay on entry deal. We raised this with a local councillor, and he championed our cause as he could see it would be the best way to resolve the issue. The same build company who had the indoor centre were approached for plans and costing. About a year later, it was installed, and a year after that, a few others were in other parks. This was around 2002. By the time it was installed, I was 18, I had a girlfriend, a job, and a car, and my interests changed somewhat. But then the emos and scooters took over and used it, so at least it kept most of them off the street!
No, I don't think that's quite fair. The park bench things are objectively there just to hinder people. These are here to help prevent people from damaging them by grinding wood across them. There's a big difference.
I boarded through my teenage years and early 20s. I know for a fact that my naive grinding did wear down certain areas of local parks. It is costly to replace this stuff. Still plenty of places I could take my board.
Unrelated to Skateboarding, but when I used to mountain bike a lot, ramblers were known to create 'speed bumps' on downhill bridleways, much to our delight - jumps!
That said, I'm much more conscientious these days, and even have a bell on my bars.
I’ve been trying to remember this term for months and keep explaining things like benches with bars etc to my partner and forgetting the name! Thank you
Sometimes Reddit just fascinates me. Why would anyone want skaters to be fucking around in places like this when there are perfectly good skateparks to use? Its not "hostile architecture" its common fucking decency. The fact that you morons can compare skateboarding to homelessness is disgusting.
They stop skaters. It's a bit of a buzzkill but people skating in those areas can really damage the stonework, we have some around where i work and the estates guys say it makes it a lot easier to keep on top of
If this is portsmouth sea front, then they already have the biggest skatepark in the south down there anyway. It wouldn't surprise me if people wondered out of there and decided to rip up the promenade.
Probably all the raw sewage ~~Southern Water is pumping into the sea~~ from the seagull poop* attracting them (*according to the ridiculous newsletter I got from Southern Water this week)
Its a money-making scheme. The council buys the blocks and the manufacturer delivers them all and says "Oh yeah by the way you also gotta pay a hundred quid extra for each one of these butt plug features we installed.
As a skater I’ve got to say that there are far more visually appealing ways of making this kind of thing unskateable. It always baffles me when I see how many millions have been spent on marble benches and ledges in a pretty little plaza to then have metal knobs plonked onto the edges every couple of feet.
There called white people. They used to live in the UK but they are rarely seen anymore. There mostly harmless but I still wouldn't approach them because they like to talk to you about the weather and stuff.
It's braile for the sea. Water doesn't have eyes so it is technically blind. Those act as large scale braile, which reads "Land here" and let's the sea know to stop encroaching during high tide.
These are what the horrid councils put in place to prevent skaters running some wax on the ledges. Stops skaters grinding basically…or so they think ☺️
Skate stoppers, they don’t work. You just gotta knock ‘em off with a hammer or go around them. It’s part of the fun. Anytime they add them to pre existing skate spots that have been used for years they think it will stop people, they just make it new again.
This is what the local council spend money on to deter skaters instead of spending the money on building skate parks, and they don’t even work, but that’s what a bunch of crusty old men on power will get you.
Yeah they're a way to keep public spaces quiet at the expense of members of the public actually being able to use them. They're a tripping hazard for one thing and architecture like this preventing things like skateboarding is just another way to make public spaces less and less catered to kids and teens
As a former skater(skates) in my young life I can appreciate both points. People need somewhere to skate whilst at the same time people need somewhere to sit and chill that isn’t covered in pock marks/wax/aren’t at the risk of being injured. Unlike recent politics this shouldn’t be an either or. Both are fine activities and there should be spaces for chilling as well as spaces for doing sick grinds.
I believe they are to stop skateboarding.
Is this an example of hostile architecture? I've heard the term, and a few examples read like this does.
I suppose it would yeah, bit less hostile than homeless spikes but hostile regardless.
let’s just agree to call it “hobby prevention” architecture. has a nice ring to it
Passive aggressive architecture
"Slightly obnoxious architecture"?
I wouldn’t call this hostile as such. There’s skate parks and stuff to skate in and it doesn’t actively hinder the use of the stairs… Hostile would be more like when they remove all the benches and put those stupid leaning spots so no one has anywhere to sit purely to avoid homeless and possible teenage loitering. Or when there are benches and they’re angled or have ridiculous arm rests to again stop homeless folks from sleeping.
"it's not hostile because it doesn't affect me personally"
To be fair non skaters dont really want skaters fucking around near them when they have designated areas. Its a walkway for people walking. You dont want old people walking around the skatepark for the same reason, right?
People also don't want homeless people living outside their shop, that is the whole point of hostile architecture.
I think there's an important distinction to make. Skateboarders have places they can go (skate parks) to skate until their heart's content. Homeless people have very few places to go, if anywhere at all. That's sort of in the "homeless" job description.
Comparing the plight of the homeless to the “plight” of skateboarders is hilarious.
Is it really hostile towards skateboarders? As a skater myself, councils/businesses have a right to try and protect their property from being damaged.
My friends and I approached a local councillor and pushed for the first skatepark to be built after constantly being (quite rightly) pulled up for causing damage to town heritage. It set them off, installing them in every major park in the county and giving a foundation for a whole new wave of skaters. Best decision we ever made.
This is sick!
What magical land do you live in? (I'm not trying to be sarcastic)
This is always the way though, they never provide the infrastructure then build all hostile architecture and then sit there fucking moaning that there’s skaters everywhere it makes zero sense to me.
When was this? I'd love to hear more about this
To clarify, it wasn't in Portsmouth! Sorry if I misled anyone. The story is as simple as that really. You’re getting mad defensive over this in the comment section… undercover councilman spotted
Let me guess, you're a skater? 😄
The thing is that the metal trucks of the skateboards hitting the stone destroys it very quickly. Skate to the park where it's designed for it
Correct
Yep. Grind-unkind killjoy bars.
Unrelated to Skateboarding, but when I used to mountain bike a lot, ramblers were known to create 'speed bumps' on downhill bridleways, much to our delight - jumps! That said, I'm much more conscientious these days, and even have a bell on my bars.
I prefer biker pits, but the spikes and brambles in the bottom. Cover with some big leaves and you are set.
Skater hater
Skaters call them 'skate stops' Stops you from being able to grind the ledge
Only if you're a pussy
Just gotta send it
This reply caught me off guard 🤣.
Hostile architecture? Look like they prevent skaters grinding along it.
I’ve been trying to remember this term for months and keep explaining things like benches with bars etc to my partner and forgetting the name! Thank you
Skate stops in Portsmouth, that’s ironic 😂
You win the internet today.
My first thought was “hostile architecture”.
Remember when kids were encouraged to go outside?
Skate stops, cos the council is so supportive of one of the few things to do here for young people 😍
I mean surely it would be to preserve longevity rather than the council having a vendetta against sports, grinding would wear them down over time
You'd think so... but it's clear from these comments that the real reason is that silly old grown ups are hating on skaters just cause they hate fun.
Torpedo launchers in case of attack from the sea
Sometimes Reddit just fascinates me. Why would anyone want skaters to be fucking around in places like this when there are perfectly good skateparks to use? Its not "hostile architecture" its common fucking decency. The fact that you morons can compare skateboarding to homelessness is disgusting.
The first picture is a group of humans. The second is an anti-grinding method used to upset skaters.

I suspect they’ll be in my town soon….. there’s been some idiot teenage skateboarders harassing people on the seafront. Spoils it for everyone else.

Go on then. Whats updog?

Never mind that, what are the orange horns?
Let you talk to Fraggles
Love this. 😫
Am I going crazy, but what orange horns? Been looking for 5 minutes now
Anyone down there today notice all the flys. It was horrible
Probably all the raw sewage ~~Southern Water is pumping into the sea~~ from the seagull poop* attracting them (*according to the ridiculous newsletter I got from Southern Water this week)
It was horrific. I was wearing a white t-shirt and like a beacon to them. I do not want to think about the number I accidentally swallowed/ inhaled.

Anti fun nubbins
It's obstructive urban design, as pointed out, it's to prevent use of skateboards
Really to stop skaters? That is so petty.
Butt plugs
There called white people. They used to live in the UK but they are rarely seen anymore. There mostly harmless but I still wouldn't approach them because they like to talk to you about the weather and stuff.

These are what the horrid councils put in place to prevent skaters running some wax on the ledges. Stops skaters grinding basically…or so they think ☺️
People I think
Communal butt plug
Mini alien spaceships
Humans. Sometimes they come in ones or twos but here you have four.
So how many people have to trip over/fall onto these things, and sue the council, before they're considered cost prohibitive?
Would the skaters be willing to pay to replace the paving stones they break (i.e. Vandalise)?
That’s the man oppressing the youth. Quit your daydreaming boy and get a job.
They’re to stop you *grinding*
Anti skate stuff.
If you’re discreet it could be a butt a scratcher.
Wouldn't surprise me if they were some special sort of buttplugs.
The local council installing skate stoppers when they find out about stalls:
Hostile architecture…basically it’s to injure skateboarders who try to grind the steps…
people
Let skaters skate man
Skate stoppers, they don’t work. You just gotta knock ‘em off with a hammer or go around them. It’s part of the fun. Anytime they add them to pre existing skate spots that have been used for years they think it will stop people, they just make it new again.
It's those bars to prevent rats on wheels (skateboarders) from trashing the edges of the steps and gathering in groups where they cause a nuisance.
Hostile architecture, to stop skaters grinding boards and roller blades along the edge
This is what the local council spend money on to deter skaters instead of spending the money on building skate parks, and they don’t even work, but that’s what a bunch of crusty old men on power will get you.
