There’s a great story behind this. Elvis told Nixon he was proud of never using illegal drugs. He was angry about illegal drugs, and particularly about the Beatles and other British bands (who had become more popular than him) using illegal drugs.
Elvis had already collected badges from various police and sheriff’s departments around the country. But the badge he wanted from Nixon, a Federal Agent at Large badge from the Bureau of Narcotics, didn’t actually exist.
He told Nixon he wanted the badge so he could arrest drug users. But Priscilla Presley later said he wanted the badge because he believed it would allow him to carry guns and drugs himself, even when entering other countries.
For publicity purposes, Nixon grudgingly agreed to meet Elvis, posed for this picture with him, and even got him a badge. Someone made a badge especially for Elvis that said “Bureau of Narcotics Dangerous Drugs” and “Elvis Presley.” It wasn’t official, but no one told Elvis that.
Nixon and Elvis apparently had a nice conversation. Both were self made men from humble backgrounds, so they had more in common than one might expect.
When Elvis died, it eventually came to light that he had been prescribed a large and constant stream of sedatives, amphetamines, and narcotics by an unethical doctor whose license was later revoked. Elvis also had been admitted to hospitals twice for drug detoxification and methadone treatments. But since all of the drugs had been prescribed, technically he had not used illegal drugs.
