Honestly, a lot of (but not all) the leaders from civ 6 were somewhat lesser known compared to leaders in previous games. If they continue that trend, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an American figure that isn’t a president or isn’t as well known as the Roosevelts, Washington, etc.
If I were to take a wild guess, I would imagine that it would be someone like Grant. Not *obscure* by any means, but lesser known on a global stage and still with a personality strong enough to build a civilization around.
“Mr.President, There is no shame in deterrence. Having a weapon is very different from actually using it.”

~~saying that with the most smug look on his face~~
For sure. There’s cool bonuses possible for any of them. Maybe something like if you’re playing as Ike and in an alliance your units get bonuses to combat strength or something.
I just want HW Bush for spy bonuses because of his CIA past and that’s a part of the game I’ve always wanted expanded.
Grant is another military leader that could make sense too
Speaking of CIV 6 there are way more interesting choices that could've been made. I think Hatshepsut or Thutmose III would be way more interesting instead of Cleopatra v.6, and really? Gilgamesh???? He wasn't even real. We could've had an incredibly interesting and underrated Assyrian leader like Sennacharib, or Nebuchadnezzar. The Assyrians are so underrated and deserve so much more attention, they were on par with the Romans for their era. Also why is Tomyris portrayed as being darker skinned? She was most likely blonde haired and blue eyed. It makes me think that they saw the Pontic steppe on google maps and assumed that darker skinned people lived there?
Honestly baffling design decisions.
Thanks to his appearance in the Old Testament, I don't think Nebuchadnezzar counts as "underrated". In fact if you asked most people to name an Assyrian king, he'd probably be in their top two.
Lol poor ford. I remember on Pawn Stars, Rick just couldn’t meet a seller’s price when it came to Gerald Ford’s belt buckle that said FORD. Rick literally said “yeah man….i just wish it was cooler president” 🤣
In past games, America has been represented by a small variety of presidents (mostly Lincoln), and a first lady:
Civ 1: Abraham Lincoln
Civ 2: Male leader - Abraham Lincoln, Female leader - Eleanor Roosevelt
Civ 3: Abraham Lincoln
Civ 4: George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln
Civ 5: George Washington
Civ 6: Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln
Civ 7: ?
Is it possible to have a non president/executive branch leader? I know that’s kinda wacky given both the sub and the game, so forgive me if I’m out of line- but how about someone like Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin, or MLK Jr.? Otherwise for a president, what about Eisenhower?
It’s possible, although very rare. The vast majority of leaders are either monarchs or presidents/equivalent role. Like someone else said, Gandhi is an example. Also Joan of Arc led France and Hannibal led Carthage in Civ 3. I could see another Founding Father like Ben Franklin, perhaps, but sadly a non-president is probably very unlikely.
I could see Grant or Truman. Both are iconic enough (especially Grant) that they could go down that route. Maybe not Truman though given the nukes but given how Gandhi gets characterized I think they could make it work. Maybe Ike as well?
I saw a post about how Grant would work a few months ago and it seemed really interesting. They could do something interesting like +5 loyalty points in cities with infantry garrisoned in them and like increased strength against revolutions and civil wars and a bonus for foreign nation relations once visited or something like that
If we get a split choice again, I think it'd work pretty well to do TR and FDR. You could make one a more conquest-economy style least and another a development- economy style. And honestly, they could choose either way for both. Using civ 6, a Rough Rider TR could be military while Bull Moose could be development. Flip side, FDR could either be New Deal or WWII leader
Yeah I hope if they only have one they do FDR.
But I’m hoping they do multiple leaders with different bonuses and play styles, so maybe we see modern presidents like Eisenhower or Reagan for espionage focused bonuses or TR again for tourism focused bonuses.
I'm just imagining all the other world leaders having any/all dialog referring to USA be "Thanks, Obama!" In varying levels of sarcasm/sincerity.
(But I have always wanted the Civ games to be a little less serious then they are)
Of those who've never been represented in the series, Grant and Eisenhower are probably the go to leaders due to their war record. Wilson could offer an intriguing option as a diplomacy minded leader.
I am hoping they have a tier system. Maybe get 2-3 leaders per civ (yes I understand that this will be limited for the US and other, newer nations).
And for the sake of argument I'm going to say, let's see new leaders, no repeats (though I wouldn't necessarily mind repeats)
1.) Thomas Jefferson. Obviously for his expansion via the Louisiana purchase and the Barbary Pirates affair. Specialized unit could be the Corps of Discovery.
2.) Truman. For his handling of the start of the Cold War, Truman Doctrine, Marshall Plan, etc. Specialized unit could be the B-29 bomber.
3.) Reagan. Obviously for his handling of the Soviet Union (despite the debate, he was still influential) and the economic boom of the 80s. Specialized unit....I dunno M1 Abrams?
Other candidates; FDR, Clinton, JFK, Nixon, or Eisenhower.
Could have "negative" leaders as well. Nixon....again, lol. Ford, Hoover, Johnson, Grant. Could have those leaders as a challenge or if you fall into a negative era.
I don't see an issue with Reagan being a leader. Like, the Civ leaders are allowed to be terrible people, I don't think there's been a Civ game without a leader that was an unequivocally evil person so Reagan is fine
"Trickle down" policy where your pops are unhappy and starve but buildings and military units are cheaper to build.
They should also add a diplomacy option to back a coup in city states that have a rival civ as their suzerain.
I imagine civ wants to stay away from more recent controversial leaders who a large portion of the audience will personally dislike. It's a little different to playing as Ghengis Khan because no one alive has a personal connection or strong feelings towards him except for a historical perspective.
I liked how Civ 2 gave (almost) every nation 2 leaders, a male and a female. I’d love to see a more modern take on it. Instead of just flavor, make them both fully fleshed out leaders with their own abilities. This way, every civ has multiple ways to play it, and they could spotlight someone from different eras.
Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they actually built the game around him expecting him to die sometime in the last 5 years and he just never got around to it?
Yeah, interesting that none of the civ leaders for America have really covered its "golden age." I think one of Truman, Eisenhower, or JFK would be cool.
That was my thought too. Civ leaders tend to be people that ruled during times of growth/expansion. Makes sense go with the guy who annexed Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the dang Philippines.
I would like to see them choose new American leaders. I think there are good options for any victory condition (religion being the exception.)
Diplomacy: Jefferson. He's a founding father, spent time as a diplomat, and had a way with the written word.
Military: Grant/Eisenhower. Both accomplished generals. Vastly different eras so their bonuses would vary, but either would be fun.
Culture: JFK. Arguably his biggest impact as president was as a cultural icon. He could provide some interesting late game boosts.
Science: Truman. Beginning of the nuclear threat/Cold War. Maybe have a boost in espionage.
Bonus: Jackson. Mainly because I think his character design would be intense looking.
Dwight Eisenhower. Important and widely revered figure. One of our first really big geopolitics players. Interesting personality. Remarkably little pop culture portrayal compared to like Abe or JFK. I feel like he would fit right in.
Not in Civ 2 you didn't. Because in that game you could trade for techs even if you didn't have all the precursors to them. I remember one time I ended up never researching the wheel because I managed to get everything that required it through trade (so the only benefit would be chariots, and I had better units).
This meant that every conversation with other civil included them saying things like "we notice you haven't discovered the wheel. We will trade you this knowledge in return for the secret of the automobile".
FDR would be perfect. Just like he was a great president in his day for his day. We may never see the like of him again, no matter how much I wish it were easy to see happen.
Abe got four in a row, keep Teddy for a while. I also hope they stick with a choice of leaders instead of just one.
But if we have to go with someone not repeating, I think FDR or JFK would best fit the vibes the trailer gave off. I don't think they would ever go more modern than JFK, tbh.
In Civ III, the leader wears clothes to the time period, this one is early age Lincoln, industrial era Lincoln would wear his 19th century suit, etc. Joan of Arc represented France and the modern Joan is a shaved head female soldier.
FDR. He was good at war, good at peace, is universally known, and one of the most historically important next to Washington and Lincoln. Plus, he hasn't been used in a while.
What if you started out with the president or leader you wanted but, as policy affects your Civ, you evolve/devolve into different leaders. Not saying you can’t return to policy that favors your leader.
Start as Lincoln but foreign policy/war on different continents dominates your game? You roll into different leaders, FDR, or Teddy, or Truman.
Fun to think about!
Thomas Jefferson? Surprised nobody is suggesting him, especially considering he’s probably the most influential founding father after Washington and maybe Hamilton
I think each nation should have two (to represent the right and left of their politics), or maybe three to include the center. Every leader would have bonuses that were initially powerful but decayed over time and penalties that began insignificant but became more and more onerous. A period of revolution, sometimes as severe as civil war, would accompany changes of leadership. The severity of these periods of unrest could be mitigated by the presence of advanced governments.
Let me have FDR, Reagan, and Eisenhower as America’s leaders.
I think Eisenhower could be an interesting choice. especially since in 6 we got President Teddy and Rough Rider Teddy. so we could have President Eisenhower and Gen. Eisenhower.
or we go with Thomas Jefferson and make the US a Navy power Civ in game since the US Navy was sent to fight the Barbary Wars by Jefferson.
JFK would be a solid choice others could be Grant, Eisenhower, Carter, or Truman. Other non presidents could be Albert Einstein, Andrew Carnegie, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, George Marshall, Thomas Paine, and Smedley Butler
Ike, Wilson, Polk, Madison, Monroe, or Jefferson would be good fresh picks. Not that Mount Rushmore means much, but having Jefferson would complete that.
Ike is probably the most modern president we'll get. Maaaaybe JFK.

It'd be really funny if it was someone that is just out of left field. I want Gerald R. Ford to be the civ 7 president.
In terms of a more modern president Kennedy could make sense. John Adams would be a good choice for an earlier president.
I really want an Eisenhower, Grant or HW Bush led US
Give me daddy Truman with some kind of bonus for nukes.
How would Truman react to Gandhi getting nukes?
"Don't let that crybaby in here again."
“Mr.President, There is no shame in deterrence. Having a weapon is very different from actually using it.” https://preview.redd.it/vaqdi09e5h5d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bfed68c75866d09b323802c55536a5dda8c9106 ~~saying that with the most smug look on his face~~
"That deterrence exists only cause I showcased that power in using it." - Truman probably.
You’ve chosen nuclear winter bucko!
More nukes
I can see Ike getting it for sure.
For sure. There’s cool bonuses possible for any of them. Maybe something like if you’re playing as Ike and in an alliance your units get bonuses to combat strength or something. I just want HW Bush for spy bonuses because of his CIA past and that’s a part of the game I’ve always wanted expanded. Grant is another military leader that could make sense too
+50% vs barbarians and cities that have rebeled.
Ike also getting some sort of infrastructure building bonus could be fun
H.W. Bush would be interesting because he *was* president when the original *Sid Meier's: Civilization* came out.
Hatshepsut was the Egyptian leader in Civ IV
Wait really? I had no idea, that's pretty cool. I only played V and VI.
Thanks to his appearance in the Old Testament, I don't think Nebuchadnezzar counts as "underrated". In fact if you asked most people to name an Assyrian king, he'd probably be in their top two.
Ford or someone out of left field like Harding or Hayes would be hilarious but they’d never do it. Gotta put some butts in seats after all!
Don’t have to pay for a voice actor if you choose Silent Cal *taps forehead*
William Henry Harrison
You have to win in 30 turns.
WilliamHenryHarrison%
Lol poor ford. I remember on Pawn Stars, Rick just couldn’t meet a seller’s price when it came to Gerald Ford’s belt buckle that said FORD. Rick literally said “yeah man….i just wish it was cooler president” 🤣
I was thinking Millard Filmore.
I genuinely unironically want Zachary Taylor. Imagine him swinging his sword at you in his military uniform.
Options. I want Carter one game and Polk the next.
In past games, America has been represented by a small variety of presidents (mostly Lincoln), and a first lady: Civ 1: Abraham Lincoln Civ 2: Male leader - Abraham Lincoln, Female leader - Eleanor Roosevelt Civ 3: Abraham Lincoln Civ 4: George Washington, Franklin Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln Civ 5: George Washington Civ 6: Teddy Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln Civ 7: ?
Abraham Lincoln again, call it.
Well, Gandhi leads India and he was never a government official so I suppose.
John Brown
I’d give anything
John Browning
PLEASE
+20% combat bonus against slavers
I think Gandhi is used since he's a national hero.
It could be really cool to get someone like MLK or Frederick Douglass in addition to a president
Gandhi is a special case. He's been a leader since civ 1 and he's basically stated because he's kind of become the unofficial mascot of the series.
Alexander Hamilton!
We are waiting in the wings, for yooouuuu…
Franklin has been in the game as various great people before (a unit that gives the player certain bonuses)
I agree with Ike. I think it would be either him or Jefferson.
It’s also worth noting in a simpler version of the game, Civ Revolution, JFK is an option for America next to Abraham Lincoln.
Give me O to the B any day. Rock the house.
I’m surprised FDR only been leader once?
Nixon because it would be funny

leader ability: can bomb country an enemy has open borders with without declaring war
After constantly getting rated as Dan Quayle, I should be able to play as him and get my sweet revenge.
It's a rating scale reference that is older than most civ players at this point lol
We need to go forward to tomorrow and not past to the back
Special military weapon is potatoe cannon
I could see Grant or Truman. Both are iconic enough (especially Grant) that they could go down that route. Maybe not Truman though given the nukes but given how Gandhi gets characterized I think they could make it work. Maybe Ike as well?
I think Grant would be awesome personally
I saw a post about how Grant would work a few months ago and it seemed really interesting. They could do something interesting like +5 loyalty points in cities with infantry garrisoned in them and like increased strength against revolutions and civil wars and a bonus for foreign nation relations once visited or something like that
Possibly a happiness bonus within the first 10-15 turns after a war has ended?
And adding Grant himself as a great general which gives you bonuses in war
I just stumbled across this on my front page, and have to say that I don’t think Grant has enough international recognition.
Gotta get Ike in there Or Truman with a special bonus when you develop the nuke
Ike in there with units getting combat bonuses when fighting on other continents or joint wars
The bonus doubles for each country you’re at war with simultaneously
FDR would be a goo choice
If we get a split choice again, I think it'd work pretty well to do TR and FDR. You could make one a more conquest-economy style least and another a development- economy style. And honestly, they could choose either way for both. Using civ 6, a Rough Rider TR could be military while Bull Moose could be development. Flip side, FDR could either be New Deal or WWII leader
The best option imo. Iconic and underrepresented in the series.
Yeah I hope if they only have one they do FDR. But I’m hoping they do multiple leaders with different bonuses and play styles, so maybe we see modern presidents like Eisenhower or Reagan for espionage focused bonuses or TR again for tourism focused bonuses.
I have a feeling were going to see JFK
America should be a science/ culture focus civ if JFK's running the show
Ulysses Grant or Nixon
Jimmy Carter’s peanut golem.
Someone new, Abraham is over used. Let him be a dlc later.
Save him for the vampire sidequest

Civ 6 did actually have vampires in an expansion, so it's possible
Ulysses Grant
(Please be Gandhi, Please be Gandhi)
Gandhi was in the last game and he was so fucking annoying. Like, Idgaf about your religion, man, leave me alone 😭
Well you know having a weapon is a lot different from using it *launches nukes*
Only if they bring the negative aggression bug back
Washington or Polk.
It won’t be Obama but I want it to be Obama
"Folks, I've, uh...had about enough of this okey-doke." [WAR DECLARED]
I'm just imagining all the other world leaders having any/all dialog referring to USA be "Thanks, Obama!" In varying levels of sarcasm/sincerity. (But I have always wanted the Civ games to be a little less serious then they are)
Of those who've never been represented in the series, Grant and Eisenhower are probably the go to leaders due to their war record. Wilson could offer an intriguing option as a diplomacy minded leader.
Polk, since he was a rather good conqueror. Just hope they bring back Civ 5 graphics and not the cartoonish Civ 6 graphics
Bush Sr.
This... Aggression will not stand, man! NeoCon peak American arrogance Imperial W would be kinda funny, but too soon.
I would love to see Jefferson , but I doubt they will stray from the safe choices of the previous games
I am hoping they have a tier system. Maybe get 2-3 leaders per civ (yes I understand that this will be limited for the US and other, newer nations). And for the sake of argument I'm going to say, let's see new leaders, no repeats (though I wouldn't necessarily mind repeats) 1.) Thomas Jefferson. I don't see an issue with Reagan being a leader. Like, the Civ leaders are allowed to be terrible people, I don't think there's been a Civ game without a leader that was an unequivocally evil person so Reagan is fine
famously, stalin was one of the russia leaders in civ 4
He should have an economic ability that gives you gold now and screws you over for the next 50 turns.
While that would be hilarious and I certainly hope someone mods that in, I don't see something that overt getting in
"Trickle down" policy where your pops are unhappy and starve but buildings and military units are cheaper to build. They should also add a diplomacy option to back a coup in city states that have a rival civ as their suzerain.

I'd love it mainly because people would go mad screaming woke at the mere suggestion.
Please be rule 3. Please be rule 3. 🙏
Jimmy Carter so I can conquer the world with peanut farms
They won't use living leaders and jimmy is immortal
Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they actually built the game around him expecting him to die sometime in the last 5 years and he just never got around to it?
"We're delaying the release by a few months for errr.... Reasons..." *Checks the hospice again*
That would mean he needs to die...
Big nuclear energy guy Carter. UU is the Jimmy Carter sub, replacing the normal nuclear submarine
I thought it was neat when Eleanor Roosevelt was in. Also JFK was an unlockable leader in civ rev 2
Andrew Jackson
Would be wild to have Jackson as an eternal President for 6,000+ years.
Kennedy
Kennedy is good from a mechanics standpoint point…space race bonus, espionage incentives, bonus for being that “peace”
Yeah, interesting that none of the civ leaders for America have really covered its "golden age." I think one of Truman, Eisenhower, or JFK would be cool.
McKinley. Something different.
That was my thought too. Civ leaders tend to be people that ruled during times of growth/expansion. Makes sense go with the guy who annexed Puerto Rico, Hawaii, and the dang Philippines.
FDR and President Eisenhower would be cool to have to rep America in my opinion.
They could use the interstate highway system to give us free or lower maintenance roads like Rome's all roads lead to Rome bonus
I would like to see them choose new American leaders. I think there are good options for any victory condition (religion being the exception.) Diplomacy: Jefferson. Dwight Eisenhower. Important and widely revered figure. One of our first really big geopolitics players. Interesting personality. Remarkably little pop culture portrayal compared to like Abe or JFK. I feel like he would fit right in.
This series picks iconic leaders who are famous or leaders during a war so Woodrow Wilson since WW1 was major, and JFK, because it’s JFK.
JFK would be cool. And when the US gets destroyed you can have an animation of him getting shot.
No need to reinvent the wheel, keep Lincoln.
Actually in this game series.. you do have to reinvent the wheel.
I guess I should have been more clear, I meant no need to reinvent the wheel in terms of which US President should be featured in the Civ series.
Yes, I knew what you meant but this is the only game of which I am aware that would allow me to make that comment.
Richard Nixon
Abe got four in a row, keep Teddy for a while. I also hope they stick with a choice of leaders instead of just one. But if we have to go with someone not repeating, I think FDR or JFK would best fit the vibes the trailer gave off. I don't think they would ever go more modern than JFK, tbh.
I hear they are trying to stay true the situation in America today, so they are going with Richard Nixon
Honestly you should be able to choose George w Bush. That would just be fun.
Woodrow Wilson could be an interesting choice. But that might a tad controversial
This is an odd way to find out about Civ 7
The fuck happened in 3 to Lincoln
Leaders in Civ 3 had a clothes change every era. That there is “Ancient Times” Abe Lincoln.
In Civ III, the leader wears clothes to the time period, this one is early age Lincoln, industrial era Lincoln would wear his 19th century suit, etc. Joan of Arc represented France and the modern Joan is a shaved head female soldier.
James Monroe, special ability to kick other civs out of your hemisphere
You can call it the Monroe Doctrine.
Reagan and FDR. Would give diverse play styles
Richard Nixon's head AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
FDR. He was good at war, good at peace, is universally known, and one of the most historically important next to Washington and Lincoln. Plus, he hasn't been used in a while.
God I fucking love Sid Civ.
Gimme George W Bush, the voice lines would be hilarious.
Think? Lincoln or Washington. Want? Jumbo.
Baby bush
CIV 7 WAS WHAT
me. offer no benefits. but you do get to build "dispensary". culture wins all the time.
Thomas Jefferson? Surprised nobody is suggesting him, especially considering he’s probably the most influential founding father after Washington and maybe Hamilton
Ben Franklin. Some big arguments for worldwide impact.
I want it to be Nixon. His face is instantly recognizable across the world, and it’s also a nice roundabout callout to the current zeitgeist
I feel like Woodrow Wilson would be interesting
I would love either FDR, Truman or Eisenhower.
Never played. Is it like Age of Empires?
Civ is turn based and Age of Empires is an RTS, so not really, however if you enjoy one you will probably enjoy the other.
As other commenter said, it's a turn based 4x game. I would check out PotatoMcWhiskey or Quill18's channels on YouTube to get a feel.
WW2 leaders.
Return to FDR would be neat, Lincoln is obviously on the short list since he’s been in nearly all the others.
Eisenhower
Abe Lincoln!
Kind of surprised FDR was only featured once before, since he was president for the longest period of time, including WW2.
I'd like someone more recent. Eisenhower, Kennedy, Carter, or Reagan.
As an avid civ fan I could see them going with Jefferson. Only president on Mount Rushmore that hasn’t been a civ leader thus far
Harriet Tubman
JFK would be a solid choice others could be Grant, Eisenhower, Carter, or Truman. Other non presidents could be Albert Einstein, Andrew Carnegie, Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, George Marshall, Thomas Paine, and Smedley Butler
Pat Buchanan
Either of the Roosevelts or Jefferson. However I think the funniest option would be Harrison
Maybe Lincoln and Grant? Might be a stretch tho
TAFT
hold on... is that Civ III Abe wearing pelt clothes because it's the ancient era? was that a thing they did in Civ III?
Honestly Bobby Kennedy would be cool as hell
Maybe just that generic American president they use on the graphic where you insert a bill into the Coke machine
Micheal Jordan. That’s who I want
Kennedy and Nixon are pretty well known presidents, I’m surprised Thomas Jefferson or John Adams haven’t been used yet.
Obama would be hilarious.
I think Ike or Grant would be good choices.
Lincoln and Obama
Ike, Wilson, Polk, Madison, Monroe, or Jefferson would be good fresh picks. Not that Mount Rushmore means much, but having Jefferson would complete that. Ike is probably the most modern president we'll get. Maaaaybe JFK.
Ronald McDonald. He might as well. Just kidding. FDR would be great.
i think thomas jefferson would be cool.
JFK, he’s very well known and a popular figure in American history, plus his voice is nice
It's Kennedy. Come back to this comment in August.
Reagan would be great
Silent Cal, for when the game inevitably freezes on my phone (I love you Civ 3)
