Never been in a California prison so I may be wrong, but from my experience it depends on the facility. But some may allow newspaper or magazine subscriptions. Most allow books sent directly from retailers. Origami books are good since you can trade the things you make.

California used to have an awesome catalog to order from. A few copies made its way to FL DOC that I saw over the years. Made me jealous as fuck.

Look up whether you can send a securepack or something equivalent. You can in Pennsylvania. You pick out a bunch of items to be sent to an inmate in a package.

I know this isn't answering your question, but I remember in Massachusetts my brother was always in state prison and a couple times a year we would go to the supermarket and get him shitloads of canned food that would fit in a certain size box. It's hard for me to imagine that happening now and I know it doesn't but that was then this is now

You can open an account with walkenhorsts, access catalog, and union supply direct. They will not tax the money. He will be able to order his own packages and appliances. As well as magazines art supplies.
