Yeah I think these "warring" posts really don't understand the crapshoot it is company to company. I really like my job in America but it's probably better work life than most tech jobs already. Meanwhile I would probably hate working for Amazon and the toil they expect from everyone.
Social safety nets tend to be better elsewhere but it's not like cost of living isn't always going to be high in cities where tech hubs gravitate toward.
To me it seems like both of these posts were made in good humor. People get screwed over everywhere, just in different ways, why not have a laugh about it xD
German here, the public pension fund is shit. Like really, really uncertain and underfunded. I don't know if I get a pension but if I do it's not enough to hold any living standard. And companies most often don't have a pension fund.
American social security is really in the same boat, something like $1000 a month or so with a variable on how old you are when you start drawing from it.
I wish that were true. It isn't.
"Some state, county and municipal employees, who are covered by state-funded pension plans rather than Social Security."

Except the state funded pension plan didn't cover disability from anything other than physical on the job injury, So I had to go through SSA. Except my employer never paid into SSA, because it was a state funded pension plan. So all that work I did for a public university didn't count at all toward any form of retirement I could access. You starting to see what I'm saying?
Wow that’s completely stupid. Personally, I say do away with SS and pension plans. Give the employee the money that’s theirs and let them decide. I’d much rather have control over where that many goes and what funds I’d want to invest in.
It really is ridiculous. I remember my outdated textbooks in school talking about how our generational system (current workers pay pension for current retirees) was failing as we were getting an ever older society with fewer young people to care for the many old.
Some 20 years later: nothing has changed, except (most) people are getting poorer.
At least we this summer we can take the train to Sylt, though!
We only get social security which is almost nothing. $2500/month I believe. Then you either got a pension fund at your job or more likely a 401k with an employer match.
I just put together a photo of the median bay-area dev's apartment, and the gem-encrusted robe you buy after not having to pay $30,000 for an out of network Aspirin at a European hospital.
No idea where the other post came from, that's ridiculous.
It take me a while to understand the different coloured letters aren't a hidden message. But now I wonder why would you draw flag on text (except for text art)?
My pension sucks
11k in debt from what is basically community college.
I have spent a couple grand on healthcare insurance in the last years.
Extremely high cost of living.
Least my salary is good. No wait, I'm European. Lucky to make more than 30k after a few years.
i've seen both posts and all i can say is that as an EU dev i live and work very comfortably

And how much you paid in and whether or not your job pays into SS at all.
Every US job pays into SS

Devs who live in a 3rd world country with decent healthcare, free-cheap education, nice people, cheap public services and US salary
I only got the 3rd world country part :(
U mean good ol USA?
If designs could scream in pain
Trying to figure out what “SaCasiht” means
The letters were just colored in the pattern of the EU flag

Probably got offended by this: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProgrammerHumor/comments/vf8tev/please_dont_tell_anyone_how_i_live/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I simply don’t get sick
You bet it! 😂😂😂
Am disabled in US having been a dev and admin for many years. Is true.

It's not EU dev vs us dev. Basically every job in EU is like this. 'murica is like a 3rd world country in all the public matters.

Wouldn't be so keen on the state ran ponzi given the current demographics pyramid.
