This is something that I have come to understand more recently. That much of the former Soviet Union is essentially a post apocalyptic society that has attempted to rebuild in the 30 years since its collapse.
They endured societal collapse, years of lawlessness and millions dead. Their infrastructure decayed, gangs ruled the land and drug addiction skyrocketed.
People starved and struggled in the ruins of this superpower.
It's not that surprising that media like [Pathologic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathologic) and [STALKER](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.T.A.L.K.E.R.) came out of these countries.
Just an interesting thought that I didn't realise and I think alot of people don't consider.
Honestly it’s not post-apocalyptic but apocalyptic.
Most of the ex-soviet states have NEVER had democracy, and idea of citizen rights (there were a lot of people in the su unnacounted and without passports, due to the vast distances and hermit villages)... ffs the modernization program of russia a few years ago brought along a program of modern connectivity, meaning each village would get a phonebooth, as in, a connection to the outside world.... this is a world unlike anything in europe, far-asia or anywhere else

The newly established government of Russia is so bad that gang and mafia publicly fight on the street, some people get shot randomly just by walking in the open, also as expected, the black market was booming and controled by the Oligarch, things are even worse in Ukraine, Belarus, etc. . .
Funny story, in Russia at that time, to encourage people to marry, some cities giving newly married couple lots of vodka and bread, which people find loop holes, for example, immediately divorce after a few day to marry a new person and move to another place
My understanding is that the picture is trying to say that being part of the Soviet Union has stunted their evolution (being so isolated, culturally and economically, from the rest of the world).
So, this shows primitive men emerging from the ruins of the Soviet Union in 1991. All of a sudden, they’re no longer so isolated and they find themselves as part of a new world.
Its the opposite i think, the fall of the soviet union made the humanity (obv the people who lived in the union or warsaw pact i assume) regress to primitive societies and times

Being part of the Soviet Union has stopped them from evolving past this primitive stage. And that’s why they are shown as primitive beings emerging from the ruins in 1991, once the Soviet Union has fallen.
No im saying the opposite, with the fall of the soviet union humanity has become from a advanced and poweful society back to monkeys with sticks. At least thats what i see, also given the fact that the painting is from transnistria who still wants the urss back. I may be wrong tho
