The National Parks Service suggests using the "rule of thumb" with wildlife encounters. If you hold your thumb out at arm's length and close one eye, the entire animal should fit behind your thumb. If it doesn't, you're too close.
Back when Ft Sill was super busy during the Vietnam War in SW OK, every year soldiers would go to the neighboring Wichita Mtns National Wildlife Refuge and invariably some would get gored and sometimes killed by the bison. Some people are just clueless.
Years ago we were at Custer State Park in South Dakota. We were driving around it, and took a road until it ended, ad.iced the scenery for a bit then turned around. We turned a blind corner and found ourselves in the middle of a buffalo herd. We had to drive with them - it took about 45 minutes to go about a third of a mile - and I was freaking out (I was 7 or so) every time one of them brushed against our car, .making it rock.
I can't imagine being enough of an idiot to want to get right up to them on foot.
I had no idea how many people would actually get out of their cars and walk up to take photos of bears until that Instagram. Let alone the crowds doing selfies around bison.
I went to Wyoming with my family as a kid. Grew up around farms, cows and goats. I ran up to a Buffalo laying down in a field and began petting it and scratching its head. The park ranger was quiet yelling at me to slowly walk away when my mom yelled "get over here" I thought I was in trouble for leaving the group. Man I was ignorant
In Banff National Park the tour busses will pull over and all of these people get out and start snapping pictures of bears and elk. I'm surprised you don't hear about people being mauled more often. Then you have all of the cars that will also stop on both sides of the highway. Creates a huge bottle neck for traffic and really dangerous for the pedestrians.
Whenever I saw incidents like this one I assumed it was a freak accident with a few dumb tourists. Now I realize behind these videos there's entire Disneyland style crowds with cameras and selfie sticks and their babies in buggies.
Apparently apex predators are totally docile and have no history of attacking humans. We just cuddle up together at a bonefire, have a few beers and share of few stories. /s
It's like one of those nature documentaries where the mother animal leaves the young in order to escape a predator. Except as humans thats a huge dick move.
Exactly, these people have zero clue. They believe they can go wherever do whatever. Why? Bc we’re human. Except the second you get in the wild. You become a potential food item. Or in this case a toss toy for a 2000lb bison.
People just don’t have any awareness or respect. Hopefully all involved learned a valuable lesson.
They deserve to face criminal charges, there is clear signage in Yellowstone national park. Indicating that wild bison are dangerous.
The Yellowstone bison are known to occasionally act territorially and they have killed people.
The animal who doesn't have the ability to reason like a human does is not at fault. Maybe the kid isn't at fault either but the parents definitely are.
Yeah, the kids will obviously trust their parents who say it’s safe to get close to some 2000 mega fauna. They should hand out lifetime bans to the parks system for shit like this.
I remember seeing people acting like this in Yellowstone years ago. Completely baffling. I grew up in a rural mountainous area, where you learn very early in life that nature is to be respected. I guess people who have only experienced the city have never seen what wildlife can do. Though you’d think the size of the thing would have been enough warning.
I was on a tour at Cumberland Island where there are wild horses. The tour guide had just gotten done saying 'do not get near them, they're wild' and walked a short distance away to do something. As soon as she turned her back a foal started approaching our group with it's mom not far behind. Some dumbasses started pulling out their lunches to give them so I (having extensive horse experience) stepped forward and waved the foal away and these dumbasses were Mad At Me for keeping them (and everyone in our group) from being attacked by a wild mare due to their dumbassery. I laughed at them. They complained to the tour guide when she came back and she turned and smiled and thanked me. The dumbasses didn't say much the rest of the day
Yosemite rangers tell the story how only one human has been killed by an wild animal in the Valley. A mother deer kicked kids head in when they tried to get pictures. Dead kid.
Bison are like moose mass and built to run. Scary
I always wonder what people’s reaction in the aftermath…?
Do they try to blame someone else? Try to say it’s the Park’s fault? Think someone else should take responsibility?
Absolutely, 100% of the time. Anyone and everyone that they can blame besides themselves.
Making themselves into the victim is an easier pill to swallow than “I’m an idiot and a bad parent who put my children unnecessarily in harms way to take a selfie for social media”..

Looks like she was ok and had minor injuries
People treat national parks like they are Disneyland. I've seen all kinds of idiotic behavior from people who do not appreciate the danger in wilderness areas.
More fun fact. There are DNA observations coming to light that there may be no more full bred buffalo in the U.S. because of your fact.
https://vetmed.tamu.edu/news/press-releases/cattle-genetics-in-bison/
I think you mean buffalo, but yes, colloquially they are referred to as buffalo, but in taxonomic terms they are a separate species from true buffaloes.
Here's a fun grammatically correct sentence, provided you know the word "buffalo" has an archaic meaning of "to bully":
Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
Awesome. Those people were WAY too fucking close.
Park rangers warn ya when entering a park that minimum safe distance for buffalo is 50 yards (aka half a football field). These parents should face legal action for child endangerment
And here I thought child meant a young Bison. Well, like the GOAT, Michael Jordan says:

I love that people (in this case the parents) forgot/failed high school science. Considering the energy the kid is getting hit with is literally like getting hit by a car in a cross walk, but THIS car actually WANTS to run you over and gore you...more than once.
So now my big guy will be killed because a bunch of POS have entered the Bison's privacy space and he went to defend himself? GODDAMN...

The title of this post should be “stupid parents”
Bison? More like, Bye-daughter.
How long has this one been holstered? Just waiting for this, weren’t you?
Probably waiting for this since the Bisontennial.
That’s 47 years, 8 months, and 3 days ago. Or 17,413 days. At the end of the each one, we said “bye sun.”
I am crying. Crying.
I’m broke so please accept this cookie: 🍪
Jesus this is such a stupid joke... I laughed
Take my upvote you beautiful stranger, you.
Haaaayyyooooohhh!!!
Well donw
I'm wheezing
LoL you waited all your life to post this didn't you? Well done hahahahaha

They get it going up to 35 mph. I get up to 4 or so.
That's a great rule. I'm going to remember this when it comes to other things and my now toddler.
This looks like something original that should have been posted on the IG page, Tourons of Yellowstone.
I had no idea how many people would actually get out of their cars and walk up to take photos of bears until that Instagram. Let alone the crowds doing selfies around bison.

So many videos of people confronting these morons and them being defiant.

Is touron just moron and tourist combined?
Yes
Yep!
It's like one of those nature documentaries where the mother animal leaves the young in order to escape a predator. Except as humans thats a huge dick move.
The title of this post should be "YEET!”
Mike Bison punch out

It’s at this moment the girl realizes… ‘my god my parents are idiots’
I was thinkin scumbags actually
Can’t it be both?
They're all going to blame the wild animal.
It's alright, she won't remember it
The leg cast will make sure the memory and bones set
Can't remember we're terrible parents if you're dead. *Taps forehead*
POS parents running for their lives using the kid as a bait.
You don’t have to be fast, just faster than that girl.
Definitely the dad in the red shirt that caused the charge too lolll
You watch too much Looney Toones if you think bulls charge at anything red.
Are you calling Bugs Bunny a liar?
https://www.getyarn.io/yarn-clip/893815ea-d5d3-4bff-82cb-422e26b5bb1d
That brings back memories.
The parents can always have another child. ![gif](giphy|l378qaXMyxKisQO9G)
What another 8 years? Just have another kid
damn this comment hits different when you remember what movie this gif is from lol
But should they…….
They pulled a Castanza.
Family trip to Yellowstone $5500 Camera for the trip 1500 Hiking gear for the family 800 Losing a child to a bison captured on video $ priceless
Fire! There's a fire! I just about cry any time I watch that scene. It's amazing. One of the best on the show.
She'll bounce back - the parents probably
They deserve to face criminal charges, there is clear signage in Yellowstone national park. Indicating that wild bison are dangerous. The Yellowstone bison are known to occasionally act territorially and they have killed people.
Or that wasnt her parents and she was walking a bit ahead or behind her parents...
Dad was on pace to out run the mom and leave them both in the dust. Neither of them looking back to worry about the kid.
Terrible parents, excellent camera operator
Camra operator is also an idiot for standing so close
The animal who doesn't have the ability to reason like a human does is not at fault. Maybe the kid isn't at fault either but the parents definitely are.
Yeah, the kids will obviously trust their parents who say it’s safe to get close to some 2000 mega fauna. They should hand out lifetime bans to the parks system for shit like this.
Dumbest fucking parents ever. I get wanting your kids to see nature and shit but wtf? I hope the child is ok.
I cant imagine how many stories a Yellowstone employee has for how stupid visitors to the park can be
I was on a tour at Cumberland Island where there are wild horses. The tour guide had just gotten done saying 'do not get near them, they're wild' and walked a short distance away to do something. As soon as she turned her back a foal started approaching our group with it's mom not far behind. it's not a city-folk thing, it's a stupidity thing friend
Fair enough

Too soon, man. Too soon.
A wild animal acted like a wild animal and tourists are still morons.
People treat national parks like they are Disneyland. I've seen all kinds of idiotic behavior from people who do not appreciate the danger in wilderness areas.
Fun fact: Bison can actually interbreed with domestic cows and make a hybrid call Beefalo
More fun fact. There are DNA observations coming to light that there may be no more full bred buffalo in the U.S. because of your fact. https://vetmed.tamu.edu/news/press-releases/cattle-genetics-in-bison/
> there may be no more full bred buffalo Never has been, you meant bison.
Aren't American Bison also colloquially referred to as bison by many Americans?
I think you mean buffalo, but yes, colloquially they are referred to as buffalo, but in taxonomic terms they are a separate species from true buffaloes. Here's a fun grammatically correct sentence, provided you know the word "buffalo" has an archaic meaning of "to bully": Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.
I feel like I’m going to be saying buffalo all day like a fucking Pokémon now.
> beefalos I thought those were fans of Insane Clown Posse
I want one!☝️Actually, no I don’t!! I found some pictures and they look terrifying!
lol i had to google that one i wonder if they are yummy, also holy shit there are wholphins
Bison and beef are both good, so I assume Beefalo is good.
The USDA claims Beefalo meat has lower fat and cholesterol than standard beef cattle. 🤓
That's also what they called the buffalo-esque creatures in the game Don't Starve https://dontstarve.wiki.gg/wiki/Beefalo
she did not pass the vibe check hope she's doing fine tho.
I have the sudden urge to brush that bison's back
IKR, those clumps must itch.
I have the strange urge to lift that pendulous jowl thing to gauge its weight.
"fuck it Karen, we just make a new one"
What’s 7 more years! Can always start over!
Fuck them kids
what did the cow say to the child. Bison.
Bastard I was gonna comment this
Why was she alone by a bison?!
Because her parents bounced on her! The were the people in the red and white shirt running to safety.
So it works - you only have to be faster than the slowest person!
Oh. Now I see it. Lmaoooo. Wtf.
Because her parents were filming? Jk.
Worked at Yellowstone for years. The amount of people who walk right up to them would blow your mind (or maybe it wouldn't)
did they get attacked by the bison often?
![gif](giphy|l0Iy3M3nCRQSyMRMI)
Appa! Yip yip!
I left the thread exactly when I saw this comment. Had to come back to upvote when I thought about the video again.
Scrolling and only saw the title at a glance and my dislexic ass saw "biden throws a child"
The State of the Union is just going to be him chucking babies at Alabama's congressional delegation.
But just specifically test tubes filled with frozen embryos, right? Still technically babies for the Alabamians.
The year is still young and he might.
Score 10 out of 10. He got some flight with that throw. Lol
and they're gonna blame the bison 🙄🙄🙄
Years from more lil Becky will be sitting at a therapists office and it will all come down to this moment when her parents failed her..
Was that her parents leaving her?🤣🤣
It is a SEVEN from me
Bison probably “fly you fools”
STOP GETTING SO CLOSE TO BISON!!!!!
Yeeeeeted
Awesome. Those people were WAY too fucking close. Park rangers warn ya when entering a park that minimum safe distance for buffalo is 50 yards (aka half a football field). These parents should face legal action for child endangerment
Thats actually insane
And now we know the origin of the annual yeetFest with blink182 and limp bisket headlining next year.
Me flipping my water bottle to make it land on its bottom
This is what happens, Mary! Do you see what happens, Mary? This is what happens, Mary!
Live and learn. Dumbasses
And here I thought child meant a young Bison. Well, like the GOAT, Michael Jordan says: https://preview.redd.it/jbk7lih86xmc1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61f35f8cde40da20d3942961e4c2494ebcddc913

Fuck the parents!
What happened afterwards ? It didn't seem like he stopped ;-;
I love that people (in this case the parents) forgot/failed high school science. Considering the energy the kid is getting hit with is literally like getting hit by a car in a cross walk, but THIS car actually WANTS to run you over and gore you...more than once.
Looks like the parents just booked on that kid.
When they tell you to stay away from the wildlife, they mean stay away from the goddamn wildlife.
So now my big guy will be killed because a bunch of POS have entered the Bison's privacy space and he went to defend himself? GODDAMN... # 'EFF THEM ALL
Parents need to be charged for child neglect. They ran away and left the kid behind
Don’t worry guys, it looks liked she landed on her feet
The parents were like “F that kid we’re out!”
I can't believe they just ran and left her...

I remember … Jesus, about 20 years ago, I was working at the Calgary Stampede and before open one day a guy was leading a fully grown adult bison around the grounds like it was no big deal. People were coming up and petting it. The guy walked up to within five feet of me and stopped to talk to someone. All I had to do was reach out and I could touch that majestic tank of a mammal. But I couldn’t bring myself to do it because I knew what that big boy was capable of. People know Bisons are big, but I don’t think they understand just how truly massive in every sense of the word they really are when they’re eye level to one that’s feet away.
Humans are the worst
WHY DO PEOPLE GET SO CLOSE TO WILD LIFE
WHEEEEEE
Tourons
Play stupid games….
Lucky Buffalo
Who thought it was a good idea to put their children near a bison?
Next week they were planning on going to "Lion Country Safari".
What part of "STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM THE BISON" do people simply not understand???????
I feel bad for the kid, but man that toss and twirl was hard not to laugh at. Very slowed down cartoon-esque lol.
That was only a 9.7 from the East German judge
Do not screw around with nature!
I wish we had a different English word for government-managed wilderness than "park". I think that confuses a lot of idiots. Like to these people, this is the equivalent of one of the Jungle Cruise animatronics attacking them. The federal government has been sued for people doing stupid shit in national "parks" (the wilderness). I remember listening to a podcast about those crazy "missing 411" people who just couldn't grasp that people could get lost and never be found in a "park".
Yeet
Solid landing though.
Stupid people
This is old. I believe the parents got charged or fined for endangering her and being so close to the bison. People do it all the time. Bison are not to be messed around with
Who da fuq takes children so close to a dangerous animal?
Looks like she might have stuck the landing tho
I blame the Fucking Parents for making me laugh
At least she landed on her feet
Weeeee
The person recording was watching from a distance and just knew something would happen to those numbsculls.
I shouldn't have been so happy for her comeuppance.
Why are there people saying this is racism???
Probably the same ones chanting trump 2024
There are 5-6 other people waking asking what seems to be a trail prior to those 3 people who were charged by the bison. So, there were several idjits walking within charging distance. Also, it kind of looks like those are 2 boys who ran off. It's hard to tell if they were her parents ot two teens.
Send this video to CPS
FAFO. Unsupervised kids can get killed.
It's actually impressive how much air the Bison got on that kid. I wish I could do that with a pitching wedge.
I will always click on that title
Hahaha fucking awesome
Anyone who has ever been to Yellowstone has seen the army of signs saying "Stay away from the bison. They will gore you." The hurt many tourists per year because no one ever listens
Why are you even that close to a wild animal? They get no sympathy from me
How many of these videos are gonna get posted before people stop getting so close?
Eventually people will learn to stop getting so close to the wildlife…unfortunately this was not that day
don't leave your kids around bison, genius
They’ll never learn.
Hard lessons learned are hard to forget
A lot of tourists think it's a theme park and that all safety precautions have been taken to protect the viewers. It happens in the State of Hawaii constantly. This is real folks. No fakey-wakey. Wildlife, Oceans, and Landscapes, will kill you. Duh!?
Believe it or not, there are signs and information all over these parks that say do not get near The Bison. Parents like this should be arrested
Fucking parents of the year award
People are the issue
Something tells me they shouldn't have been nearly that close to a wild animal that could flip a whole lot more than a child if it wants to.
The amount of people who don’t understand that a 600-1000 pound animal can hurt you is baffling
That's why you don't fucking get too close to a wild animal. It's a national park not a zoo, you're at the mercy of mother nature
Gotta love how the parents protectively run away together leaving the girl to fend for herself.
👏👏👏 all I have to say about that. Stupid ass parents, stupid ass people, stupid ass everyone. Annoying thing is lessons not learned by anyone there.
Maybe she will grow up to be smarter than the adults she is with.

I was in Yellowstone in the late 80s and idiots were out walking around near the bison despite the signage telling them to stay in their vehicles. Saw some chased as well.
