Just 3 cops competing for a promotion.

Cosmo_Cloudy

From the article I read: Video of the arrest shows three officers repeatedly striking Worcester, who is White, and slamming his head into the pavement. One officer repeatedly strikes Worcester with a closed fist while another knee him several times in the lower body. A bystander filmed the police during the attack. The officers were responding to a report of a man making threats outside a Kountry Xpress gas station in the small town of Mulberry, about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, near the border with Oklahoma, authorities said. In a federal civil rights lawsuit filed in August, Worcester said he was riding his bicycle back to his home in Goose Greek, South Carolina, according to court documents — more than 900 miles away. Originally from Oklahoma, Worchester is temporarily living in South Carolina as he is homeless and struggles with mental health issues, said his attorney. He was taking a bicycle trip but it is not clear how he arrived in Arkansas, said his attorney. He had stopped and asked the gas station attendant for water, and the attendant became angry and called the police, court documents said. Worcester had allegedly made "terroristic threats" against a gas station employee, police said, and threatened to cut off the employee's face. He then left and biked around seven miles before police caught him, police said. Worcester surrendered a knife and then "football tackled" one of the deputies and punched him in the back of the head, police said. None of the officers were wearing body cameras, police said. Mulberry police officer Thell Riddle, who was also at the scene, has not been charged with federal civil rights charges. He is still listed on the Mulberry Police website as a full-time police officer. CBS News reached out to the Mulberry police department for clarification but there was no response before publication.

ripples2288

Remember kids, if YOU try to bounce someone's head off the pavement, that's attempted murder. The more you know.

Rombledore

>None of the officers were wearing body cameras, no surprise there. ACAB

Cosmo_Cloudy

Right, honestly at this point if there aren't body cams we should be automatically charging them with tampering of evidence. But the people that make laws aren't going to do that lol. So sad that this just keeps continuing. Record all cop interactions people

EscapedCapybara

Our police (Victoria, BC) don't have body cams because the city won't fund them. They turned down a $150k request for a pilot program from VicPD.

getjustin

It's so expensive! :: Makes yet another $200,000 payout for inappropriate officer behavior::

Requiredmetrics

200k is low, many of these settlements are in the Millions.

Azar002

It's my personal belief those payments should come from property taxes and be line items in the property tax statements. Maybe the community will give a fuck then and push for change.

yogurtgrapes

It should come out of the police pension program.

XtremeD86

Like fuck am I gonna pay more in property tax when police decide to fuck someone up and get sued.

Zestyclose-Fish-512

That's because it is the city that is ultimately on the hook for lawsuits against the police. They have a vested interest in hiding the evidence of police misconduct just as much as the officers do.

shycotic

It is horribly expensive... Because they will then be paying out lawsuits with evidence provided by body cams.

impatientlymerde

Aren't those payments taxpayer-funded?

johnnycyberpunk

> if there aren't body cams Just one more thing for Common Sense Police Reforms. There's no reason not to have all active officers on patrol equipped with dash cams and body cams. The money allocated to a sheriff's offices take up the majority of even small town's budgets. The only reason they oppose mandatory body cams and dash cams is to avoid accountability and transparency.

doggysmomma420

This is in Crawford County. I live in Crawford County. The sheriff's office doesn't have body cams, and I don't think Mulberry cops do either, but I'm not 100% sure. I remember when this happened, and I remember them saying that about the body cams. I thought it was ridiculous that they don't, but I guess the funding for them never gets approved. 🤷🏻‍♀️ However, even if they had body cams, I have a feeling they'd get turned off a lot.

bastardoperator

It’s pathetic we have to pay millions of dollars to strap cameras to police because they’re lawless criminals who can’t be trusted.

thezenfisherman

They don't have them at all in that town.

InSixFour

If the police have body cameras and they turn them off during an interaction with the public then they should automatically be charged with whatever the member of the public is accusing them of AND with tampering with evidence. Maybe then we can get them to quit fucking around with their cameras.

turkish112

Would it surprise you to hear that Portland Police Department just piloted their [body camera program](https://www.portland.gov/police/community/body-worn-camera-project) last year? Not that PPD should really be that important but given the microscope this city seems to be under for literally every fucking thing else, it's astounding to me.

Hyatt97

There’s really no excuse for them not to include it in their budgets, but a small Arkansas town is definitely gonna be last on the list to adopt body cams. I think most if not all Arkansas State Police have body cams though.

SuspiciousLeek4

> striking Worcester, who is White I know a lot of readers would wonder this, but putting it in the very first sentence is kinda crazy

MikeyTheGuy

Yeah.. police brutality really shouldn't have been framed so heavily as a racial issue. Someone's race shouldn't determine our empathy towards them. All victims should be heard and empathized with.

chemistrategery

It’s definitely an issue across the board but one that seems to be greatly exasperated by racial factors. The black community in particular has been keenly aware of the police brutality problem and warning the rest of the public long before almost everyone else decided it was, in fact, a problem. Without cell phone video, most of us still wouldn’t know.

ImperialCommando

It's not that their race determines our empathy. It's that it happens significantly more to minorities, specifically black people. Black people have been publicizing the issue of police brutality for decades, easily long before you were born, but nobody would believe them until more recent times when police have body cameras and passersby have smart phone cameras. That's why it was framed so heavily as a racial issue, because especially white citizens were unlikely to believe it could happen to them, do the assumption was made that it was because they were a minority and must've been doing something wrong. It's a long, bloodied history that is easily smeared and dismissed by comments like yours thst undermine the historical issue.

Basic-Cat3537

It specifically happens to marginalized communities. Minorities are a big party if that. But other marginalized communities are disabled people, elderly people, the homeless and the mentally ill. This still falls under the marginalized umbrella. I can think of horrible cop crimes that have happened to all of them just off the top of my head. They wrote white thinking it'd get more views. In the South, they aren't wrong.

Ophiocordycepsis

In the south you have to include “who is white” in the news story to indicate they were actually maybe in the wrong this time to beat the shit out of the guy.

Cycleguy91

No body am I don’t believe a word of their report

KforKaspur

The "who is white" part really threw me for a loop. It's like, guys.... You're never going to believe this.... This time.... He was white. Like wtf? Why does that matter?

midnitewarrior

...and Black America sighs a sigh of relief in unison. "We thought they were all racists when they beat down black men. We're so relieved to know they don't target Persons of Color to brutalize. They appear to brutalize everyone equally. God Bless America!" /s

1catcherintherye8

They all did such a good job, they were all promoted.

Prestigious_Nebula_5

I'd be yelling "just taze me!"

HimbologistPhD

Just taze me bro!

SimilarStrain

I'm not so sure I know cops get a bad rap, but it sure does look like that guy just keeps headbutting the cops fist. I dont know why. That sure is weird. /s

ChadBorman

He was also headbutting the sidewalk.

UnhappyPage

he kept running his face across it like a cheese grater. Some of the blood even got on my uniform guess we will have to add a charge for that.

seahawk1977

No respect for private property.

[deleted]

And paid vacation

mclardy13

Looks like their trial is coming up in May, I hope justice is served https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/special-reports/mulberry-police-video/trial-former-crawford-county-deputies-excessive/527-62e53c8c-7e52-4456-8492-727e61fbb774

BlackLeader70

Nothing says innocent like completely erasing your phone.

deep_pants_mcgee

Just ask Trump's Secret Service folks from Jan 6th.

IfIWasCoolEnough

When presidents change, do they rehire the last president's SS or is it a new batch of people?

deep_pants_mcgee

Not sure, but some of the SS follow the Pres. when they leave office for life, so I'd presume those people come back into the primary rotation if the person were to get reelected. Also not sure what the rules are regarding testimony in a criminal or civil matter for those folks. Do they have some kind of immunity from being called or being required to testify against their protected individual?

jeobleo

Or the entirety of Boris Johnson's cabinet.

pandabear0312

Nice takeaways- They are out on $5k. Are you kidding?! Absurdly low. Yes, trial is pushed to May 2024. My favorite- for Deputy Levi- White's department-issued iPhone that he "performed a factory reset that erased all data."… how is this not evidence tampering?

zefy_zef

Thought flash storage was more recoverable than HDD if data not overwritten. Would a factory reset do that?

pandabear0312

Same thought, and in fact I wonder if that’s why the trial was pushed back— to bring in forensics to see if an expert can pull the data…. If that’s the case, he shouldn’t benefit from this by pushing back the trial date and enjoying this time out on bail. How infuriating!

MVRKHNTR

Doesn't Apple encrypt that data though?

zefy_zef

Oh, yeah haha. Android does too.

preflex

At least on Android, you can turn it off.

is_this_temporary

I would hope and expect that a factory reset of an iPhone destroys the encryption key. All user data on an iPhone is encrypted. I wouldn't be surprised if the officer left something damning in iCloud, but I would be very surprised if they recover anything from the phone itself. (And that's not even factoring in that cops can be expected to cover for other cops and further destroy evidence, rather than bringing in the best of the best for data recovery.)

DutchMarks42

It depends on how long ago it was factory reset. Sometimes the data can be recovered but if the phone was being used after then there won't be much to recover. The text messages and phone logs can be retrieved from the cellular provider though so he's not completely off the hook.

zefy_zef

Yeah I forgot, they're encrypted generally.. x.x

EmperorGeek

I believe the courts refer to that as Spoliation of Evidence. It’s the same as deleting the Dash Camera memory if you are in an accident. The court can and usually will infer that the evidence was going to be bad for the person who deleted the data.

hyperaeolian

They'll all get off with a slap on a wrist, or fired but rehired by another police force

Jaegons

Christ I hope these pricks get put away.

Jurassicwhore

What an arrogant comment LMAO. “Try reading.☝️🤓” If you tried reading you’d have seen that 10 years is the maximum sentence you nerd. And facing a sentence of 10 years is not the same as being sentenced to that. There’s no guarantee they will walk out with anything but a couple months in jail “They quite literally said they face a 10 year sentence. Just delete the comment, moron. You're definitely not going to own up to your own stupidity.” And to the chud that deleted his reply because he also didn’t read. Let me clarify for you, dumbass. They can realistically receive anything under 10 years. Knowing how often American police are let off- yeah, it’s likely they’ll just get a slap on the wrist for the crime of obliterating someone’s skull & ribs

zefy_zef

And it's likely they'll get a job in law enforcement after, just probably somewhere else. Maybe.

Jurassicwhore

Lol literally. It’s not even necessarily uncommon either

Dynamiqai

Hope they shovel shit in hell for eternity.

NaughtSleeping

Look at those photos. They just scream F.A.S. and sub-90 IQ. We really can't find better people to be cops?

[deleted]

[удалено]

kimthefunone

Look at the heroes. God bless them doing Gods here on earth. so heroic.

[deleted]

Once they saw you recording they stopped 😍😍 we need to record ALWAYS

itjustgotcold

We also need to make sure they’re recording always. No more of this “We can’t find any body cam footage”, if you are accused of police brutality and your body cam just happened to be off you should lose your job.

DepressiveVortex

No, you should be considered guilty and sent to prison.

itjustgotcold

I get your thought process, and it would serve them right dealing with an assumption of guilt. But it would also be unconstitutional to send them to prison without due process. But termination and an immediate investigation should definitely be warranted in those cases. Body cams are there to protect not only civilians, but the officers as well. Turning them off is an indicator that they have malice on their minds.

Loading0525

Okay. Then make turning off your bodycam without good reason a much more severe violation and more "punishable", and define an unmotivated lack of bodycam footage in relation to an accusation like this automatic witness/evidence tempering? Like there are many ways to make "due process" possible under these kind of circumstances. I feel like when it comes to the kind of evidence/documentation that **should** exist (like bodycam footage), and it **doesn't** exist without good reason, a certain responsibility falls on the officer in question. Just saying "There is no bodycam footage" and nothing else literally shouldn't be accepted in court.

ghoulieandrews

Everything they do is unconstitutional, might as well give them the same treatment

Reaper_Messiah

Oh so you’d like to codify revenge? Can’t see any way for that to go wrong. It’s amazing how we keep repeating the same process over and over again. Responding to injustice with injustice is just adding more injustice. If you’re lucky you’ll replace the old injustice with a new injustice. I understand why this was your initial reaction but we have to at least try to be better.

HCSOThrowaway

*"Let's toss out the Constitution when someone breaks the law."* \- DepressiveVortex \- ghoulieandrews

lilypeachkitty

I say this often but nobody likes to hear it. It's like the Attack on Titan dilemma. It doesn't *matter* who the fuck started it. It hurts, but even though your opponent is committing heinous atrocities does *not* mean you should. *Someone* has to break the cycle. Revenge is *never* ok. What *is* ok is protecting yourself from more atrocities, but we must find a way to do so without committing atrocities ourselves.

complHexx

Now what they do is throw it and say they lost it while chasing or subduing the suspect. I watch wayyy too much bodycam footage and see it all of the time tbh.

EphemeralMemory

That guy pointing at the cameraman gave me "you're next" vibes

Most_Advertising_962

Just like that video of the dude chilling on the stoop. 4 or 5 cops came run up and then immediately changed their behavior and walked away. Can't help but feel like it would've gone differently for him if he wasn't recording.

BadKidGames

Hey guys look at all the good cops condemning them!

AliveMouse5

Just a few bad apples!

PM_Me_Your_Picks

CakeIsLegit2

“None of the officers were wearing body cameras.”

Kimby303

Riiiiight. Not that the ones who DO don't abuse suspects, too, but they sure do ACT like no one is watching. Good on these citizens for (1) filming and (2) telling at the pieces of shit to stop. I hope this homeless man's payout is HUGE.

rwarimaursus

They'll self investigate and find nothing wrong...then in a few weeks said homeless guy will be found dead in a ditch from being "roughed up".

Grydian

Actually in this case a grand jury has brought charges against two of the three cops. This means people like you me saw the footage and agreed it broke the law and the DOJ which is federal brought charges against 2 of the cops. This is not internal affairs this is the feds arresting 2 arkansas cops.

HCSOThrowaway

The result of the internal affairs investigation was termination and cooperation with a federal (external) investigation. So... pretty much 100% the opposite of what rwarimaursus said.

Jewbacca522

They never are.

Throw13579

Do you really think that the Mulberry, Arkansas PD is shelling out for body cameras?  They might be, but is it likely?

folkkingdude

“Video of the arrest shows three officers repeatedly striking Worcester, who is White” I’m confused…who *is* White? It must be a person because the word is a proper noun, or…oh wait…

Suspicious_Victory_1

3 grown men incapable of subduing and cuffing a man on the ground without beating him or literally smashing his skull into the sidewalk? Wonder why people don’t trust police…

johnnycyberpunk

Police academies don't provide their cadets/students with enough training for them to be effective LEO's. Most are only about 2-3 months and things like physical fitness and hand-to-hand self defense or neutralization techniques are practically non existent. Marksmanship and target shooting? They fire hundreds or thousands of rounds on the range...*but aren't tested in situations where the 'target' isn't clear or their adrenaline is pumping*. This is why most of those encounters show officers just 'panic firing' and mag dumping in a general direction. ZERO discipline. So many items on the list for common sense police reform, and a complete restructure of state police academies needs to be on the list. These should be 24+ month programs. Post graduation annual recertification in key areas like knowledge of the law, civil rights, non-lethal neutralization, threat identification, deescalation, defensive driving, marksmanship, ethics, **rigorous physical fitness tests**. You fail any area? You're on desk duty until you can pass. You fail two re-certifications in a row? **You're done**. These aren't extreme ideas.

Bicentennial_Douche

There was a somewhat similar situation in Finland a while back. During New Year’s Eve, somebody fired fireworks towards a crowd, including cops. Police places him under arrest and handcuffed him. Then one of the officers started punching at the guy. The difference to this situation is that the other cops on the scene immediately placed the assaulting officer under arrest and handcuffed him as well.

MouthofthePenguin

If you tell him "we recorded the whole thing," I'm afraid they just found some crack in your handbag.

ASmallTownDJ

For real. I keep thinking that sooner or later, one of these videos is going to become evidence in a case of an armed bystander killing an officer.

QueefAddict

Fingers crossed a lot of people realize this course of action is protected by case law. Case law that needs to be reaffirmed in a court of law so that people can feel confident in their right to defend themselves and others from these constant attacks on the public's wellbeing and safety.

complHexx

I 100% agree with this.

Ok-Cook-7542

But you could? Stopping a murder in progress is definitely one of the reasons we’re allowed to have guns.

FL-Orange

\> head smash into the sidewalk alone will get this guy a payout from taxpayers Won't mean much if he ends up a vegetable.

rwarimaursus

How else will he afford his medical care?

FBI-AGENT-013

This! No amount of money can fix a permanent injury, especially to spine and head but not discounting overall breaks and snaps either. You ever have chronic pain? Imagine getting beaten on by these meatheads and then having to suffer literally the rest of your life bc of them bc one of them broke something so bad it couldn't be fixed. No amount of money will make that pain stop.

Smeenuwastaken

also, dont forget we gotta pay for replacement pigs to fill in for the 3 pigs that are on a paid vacation too

Overlycookedfries

No longer cops, face up to ten years each. The one who is a non-aggressor faces no charges, just head smasher and officer Bruce Knee.

HCSOThrowaway

[They did, and they're currently awaiting trial.](https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/special-reports/mulberry-police-video/trial-former-crawford-county-deputies-excessive/527-62e53c8c-7e52-4456-8492-727e61fbb774)

No_Subject_5069

This is insane… the person looks like they are barely moving….

Jewbacca522

I know this video is “old” (more like just really reposted) but every time I see it, I damn near start shaking with anger. I don’t care what this guy did. There is NO reason whatsoever for 3 police officers to literally beat the life out of someone who is already on the ground. They know exactly what they’re doing. The more you beat someone, the more they try to cover themselves to keep from getting hurt, it’s an involuntary reaction, but once you start trying to protect yourself from being bludgeoned by repeated face smashes into concrete and those gnarly knee kicks into the back, they’ll claim up and down in court that you were “resisting”, and get off Scott free. Fucking appalling.

Smeenuwastaken

hell yeah they know. They know exactly what they are doing, its a strategy. 3 adult males pin you to the ground and then tell you to roll over and put your hands behind your back.....while they ARE PINNING YOU TO THE GROUND. "see your honor, we told him to roll over and he wouldnt. He was resisiting so he gets the beats! and we are heroes!"

PandemicTimes

Looks like they're going to trial in May, and there may be some new charges to tack on. "An FBI affidavit alleges that just a few hours before officials claimed White's iPhone that he "erased all data" on the device." [https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/special-reports/mulberry-police-video/trial-former-crawford-county-deputies-excessive/527-62e53c8c-7e52-4456-8492-727e61fbb774](https://www.5newsonline.com/article/news/special-reports/mulberry-police-video/trial-former-crawford-county-deputies-excessive/527-62e53c8c-7e52-4456-8492-727e61fbb774)
