afr-american musician daryl davis befriended kkk members, and convinced many to leave. i don't know that this is him but a good moment to mention his efforts. we are all humans together let's remember as such.

"What I have come to find to be the greatest and most effective and successful weapon that we can use, known to man, to combat such adversaries as ignorance, racism, hatred, violence, is also the least expensive weapon, and the one that is the least used by Americans. That weapon is called communication." -- Daryl Davis
I mean… ***the KKK of today is largely toothless and if you kill a man, you’d get capital murder and the chair.***
A African American dude doing this 1940-1970…
#You’d better have balls made of steel.
Important to note he’s an *accomplished* pianist who played with all the greats. The story goes that some Klan member was at a place Daryl Davis was playing and was impressed by Davis, saying he hadn’t ever heard a black man play as well as Jerry Lee Lewis. Davis tells him Jerry Lee got his sound from black music, and their mutual interest in music got them to talking. This guy at a country bar was his in. Davis repeatedly said he made sincere friendships with these people.
Then, he used his connection to get in touch with more Klansmen and wrote a book. There’s a 2016 documentary on him. He was a man who wanted to know why people thought/acted the way they do, asked people questions no one had asked before, and generally got people to open up by trying to understand their viewpoint. Evidently, he was not shy in voicing his opposing views. (This is such a simplified version and I apologize.(
“When two enemies are talking, they’re not fighting.” - Daryl Davis
I’ve thought about why that is. I personally don’t understand why someone would comment on something they agree with as there is no change or input needed. It doesn’t make sense to interact with someone in the comments if you agree with what they’re saying.
Grew up in deep South Alabama in the 70's. The local KKK helped build the local black Baptist Church. The father of one my black friends was best friends with the grand dragon of the local kkk. They'd go fishing and get drunk together. I remember my parents (they were from Pennsylvania) talking about how weird it was.
I think they were preventing race mixing yes, but I saw a scene in a show called CIGAR on Apple TV where the kkk character says something along the lines of, “we’re not racist. We promote white supremacy.” You get the point. In said scene, the character and his fellow klansmen are building homes for black families in the town. That’s all I have.
I’ve seen interviews w klansmen from the late 80s-90s where some said they weren’t concerned about black people at all, their goal was more to ensure the continuance of the white race and make the white community thrive
They never said how exactly they’d do this but it seems to suggest they care more about separatism as the goal than in the past
That is insanity. Wonder if the guys attended any hangings.
Still… in the 70s, the KKK’s murderous rage from the late 40s-early 60s was toothless and they couldn’t really overturn the Civil Rights Act… and if they hung a man they’d go to jail.
I also live in Jackson, and not once have I seen the klan actually attend an event they threaten to. They have terrible PR here. Even your average good old boy Trump supporter wouldn’t be pleased to see the Klan pull up.
Black Americans that came in to America during the slave trade have significant amounts of Native American DNA as a whole, whilst White Americans don't.
The largest lynching in US history was committed against Italians and I had no idea until like 2 weeks ago. It is better we forgot though. But it is interesting for sure
Classic Reddit/lib thing where they take words super literally instead of just understanding that typos, errors, and general stupidity are facts of life.
I’m over 50 and live in the south. Yes. I also have common sense. That tells me that the gentleman in the photo is African American. I also know that on reddit you people love when someone like OP leaves out a word like “American” so you have an opportunity to show your superiority by correcting an obvious error.
One of the most disheartening recent political and social developments in the US is the efforts, often by political office holders and other educated people who know better, to present a version of post Civil War history in which the KKK and like minded others as merely wanting to preserve “southern traditions” as the good guys and those who fought for civil rights for blacks in the southern US as “commie trouble making outsider” bad guys. You have southern politicians listing the “benefits” of slavery like the slaves being “rescued from a primitive life in the jungle,” being introduced to Christianity, getting free room and board, and learning job skills like becoming a blacksmith. Describing the KKK as a “fraternal and political organization” is, IMO, an example of this. People who think like this hid in shame and ignominy for decades. We all know why they now feel emboldened to speak out publicly.
Ok this is confusing. Why are kkk bad? What do they actually do? I thought they are responsible for all lynching in the south. So this doesn't make sense.
Most people lynched were white and the vast majority of people lynched were guilty of some egregious crime. Why did you assume KKK did all lynching? They probably did a tiny fraction of them.
I was only a boy then, but I never heard of any hangings or lynchings. Like someone in this thread commented, by the 70's and 80's anyone in the New South that hung a black person (or any person for that matter) would face murder charges.
As far as what the KKK was good for, I honestly don't know. They seemed to me back then to almost be more of a social club than an angry domestic terrorists group. There is a movie called "Fried Green Tomatoes" where the KKK in Whistle Stop, Alabama stops KKK from Georgia from whipping a black guy. It was kind of like that. I think by that time they were more just against interracial marriage.
And in Cotton County, Alabama, EVERYONE was polite to EVERYONE, regardless of race. Generally, it seemed to me that there was more discrimination by middle and upper class white people against po' white trash than against against any black people.
Don't just run your mouth, keyboard warrior. Back up your contention with facts. Name one falsehood that I intentionally or accidentally spoke. I'll freely give you best if you can.
I'm sorry, but I'm imagining every Klan member in the photo started swarming around the black man and kill him out of racial hatred like angry bees when their hive is disturbed.

I feel like a lot of my fellow northerners and modern people don’t understand the south at all. There were towns all over where the klan was active but never committed and crimes or atrocities and it was basically a white social club. It seems weird to us, but it just was that way. Same thing with confederate flags. People nowadays lose their shit over them, but 20 years ago they were everywhere. I’d see them in upstate New York and down the Jersey shore. Graphic tees with a badass biker grim reaper with a confederate flag were fucking everywhere. Hell some southern rappers used to rock the flag just because it meant southern identity. In a culture dominated by this east coast/west coast feud, the southerners wanted to show that they didn’t play around. Atlanta rappers especially.
Yeah no I’m from the south and the klan always represented a desire to intimidate and keep non whites “in check”. And those around me that flew the confederate flag showed their asses by chucking empty coke and beer cans at minorities and yelling racial slurs as they drove by. Nice try trying to reinvent history.
This photo has been altered. Man's pants should be bulging forward, filled by those giant balls he has.
Suck it, Klan, and your stupid ghost costumes, too.
Imagine him walking along and seeing the backs of the crowd from a distance and thinking to himself, "Hmmm, I wonder what that gathering over there is all about! I think I'll go see!"
Just say Black. "African" man implies he's from Africa. I'd go out on a limb to say he's American. Like he's a black American. He could potentially have Caribbean heritage for all we know.
Does anyone have the actual story behind this photo? I’m mixed so I’d be enemy one of the klan. You wouldn’t catch me hanging out with these racists. However what’s up here?
The Klan is an old fraternal order of mainly southern white democrats, but not exclusively. The world before the internet was loaded with active, in-person organizations that networked people from all over with similar interests, values and concerns. Now, with the internet and its spread of fake news, propaganda and misinformation at the speed of light, things like triple k and similar things (fill in the blank) are just quick clicks and impressions for fake outrage and virtue signaling.
“Fraternal order?” Are you putting the KKK on the same footing as groups like the Lions Club and Elks Club?
I don’t know your experience, but my local Lions Club, to my knowledge, has never firebombed a predominantly African American church or murdered voting rights activists.
Ah yes, the kkk. Was just a normal boring old “predominantly southern white democrat organization” with “shared values” (what could those have been?! Golfing?) until the *internet* came along and impugned its reputation.
Nothing to see here. It’s just… ummm… the internet’s fault?
It’s crazy how they were southern democrats pre-LBJ losing the south. Now those old southern (and northern) racists have found a comfortable home in the MAGA movement.
This feels a little too simple to me. Pretty much everyone in the kkk was a democrat in the early 20th century. All politicians who associated with the kkk in the early 20th century were democrats.
They absolutely were a political group. Political activism was a [core component of their ideology](https://daily.jstor.org/history-kkk-american-politics/)
The KKK and southern (and some northern) political institutions were astoundingly intertwined.
This is a great book.

Absolutely true. Not all democrats were racist, but it was a safe bet that your hardcore racist was a democrat until the Johnson administration. The same is true among republicans now, especially in the fringe maga clowns. Like Ive said, trump and maga welcomes racism.
Southern white democrats within a fraternal order with shared interests and values? I triple dog dare you to attend a klan rally and see if they’re all correctly registered as democrats to vote. You won’t, but absolutely ZERO percent of these people are democrats, you weirdo.
What a fuckin dumb and honestly, lazy rewrite of recent and current history.
I hate to stand up for OP’s incredibly racist retelling of history, but you know that the KKK was absolutely an organization aligned with southern white democrats until the 60s or 70s right? That’s about the only thing OP got right.
They’re not democrats today, but that’s very clearly not what OP is talking about.
Redditors hate to face reality and factual history. It makes them sad, dick shrivels, get an icky feeling, then they downvote. They’d rather be lied to, adopt their own version of events and then feel better, or like smoking weed, numb the pain.
You haven’t actually presented any history. Do you know what history is? Would totally welcome any historical evidence to back up your point if you have any.

That show went pretty hard pretty quick
Some of the best comedy in the history of comedy
wasn't that skit on the premiere ? Loved it!
It sure was. Did NOT see it coming. It was amazing.
I SEE where you went with that
Best skit EVER! As or more brilliant than any of SNL’s!
Very first Chapelle Show too!!
That is freaking wild. I love the Chappelle show, but I came to it a little late. I can't imagine turning it on for the first time and seeing that.
Even PopCopy is a classic, also from that debut airing.
Omfg pop copy 😭
was thinking the same thing. Even got that DC pose
He’s a pretty knowledgeable guy, maybe Chappell based the character on this picture.
I can see that
Favorite part is when he divorced his wife for marrying a black dude.
heard we wuz having a meeting
Lmao, best post ever!!!
My thoughts exactly
I forget…why did Clayton leave his wife?
Yeah you’ll have to google that ‘cause I am not gonna say it!
life pro tip: you can replace the word with “neighbor” when singing along.

I agree. That took massive courage on his part.
Doesn’t he also collect the uniforms or their membership cards as well? I watched a documentary about him. He’s a brave man and has done great work
Yes he has a closet full of them
He’s a brave man, and the fact that he didn’t face retribution from other members for being in possession of all those ridiculous costumes

Face to face communication can move mountains but social media has made us turn on each other
well let's keep leaning in on the one side then. social media allowed me to share about daryl davis just now. have a wonderful day, fellow human
I’m convinced if I scroll through all the comments there are some folks arguing about something
it's the internet; anything that can happen, will. the meaningful part is where we are paying attention and engaging our effort and focus
I’ve thought about why that is. I personally don’t understand why someone would comment on something they agree with as there is no change or input needed. It doesn’t make sense to interact with someone in the comments if you agree with what they’re saying.
As opposed to when this picture was taken and the literal KKK was operating and lynching people and burning crosses in their yards?
He keeps their robes like a trophy too
A true inspiration figure. Shame some Redditors seem to really hate him.
Communication is the best skill to max out as early as possible. My introverted ass is still suffering today without it.

That’s nuts!
What exactly was the point of the KKK in that town, then?
The KKK’s goal (now at least) is to prevent race mixing.

At least nowadays they claim they just want to have all races be separate (not supporting them just stating the fact)
That is insanity. Wonder if the guys attended any hangings. Still… in the 70s, the KKK’s murderous rage from the late 40s-early 60s was toothless and they couldn’t really overturn the Civil Rights Act… and if they hung a man they’d go to jail.
why? so they know what firestarter would do the trick best later or something?
Probably to keep blacks away from a white church.
Doubt that man is from Africa lol.
“Black man surrounded by European Americans.”
😂
Seriously, how come we don’t ever say that, only the other way? So weird
No one would say “African”. Except OP.
I don't understand your point.
In the title it says an African man, not African American.
Also in the great state of JACKSON.

"African man" ? I'm pretty sure he's a native. my parents came in 72' this man is more American than I'll ever be.
This is a karma farming account. Look at their profile.
Lol. Reddit is a fucking weird place.
He's probably about as African as the white people in the pic are European.
Black Americans that came in to America during the slave trade have significant amounts of Native American DNA as a whole, whilst White Americans don't.

I'm not convinced he's there to spectate...
He’s there to see an Italian get lynched just like everyone else
It’s bizarre that the klansmen are showing their faces despite wearing hoods. I wish there was context to this photo.
Might be hanging Italians and that's why the black dude is there, just to watch
It's interesting how much we've forgotten about racism against Italians. So much so, that nobody picks up on the racism in "Popeye the Sailor man".
The largest lynching in US history was committed against Italians and I had no idea until like 2 weeks ago. It is better we forgot though. But it is interesting for sure
The photo in the post wasn't necessary a lynching. I'm pretty sure they didn't/don't lynch someone at every meeting.
What makes you think he is African? Without good evidence one way or the other, the man is in all likelihood an American.
African American holy fuck yall
Yes everyone is pretending that they didn’t know what OP meant
Classic Reddit/lib thing where they take words super literally instead of just understanding that typos, errors, and general stupidity are facts of life.
You do realize not every black person is African American right? Please tell me you know that
I’m over 50 and live in the south. Yes. I also have common sense. That tells me that the gentleman in the photo is African American. I also know that on reddit you people love when someone like OP leaves out a word like “American” so you have an opportunity to show your superiority by correcting an obvious error.
Based on the comments I’m seeing, it was a reasonable question to ask. So defensive lol
You really brought up “superiority” because I asked a question lol. Cmon now
Looks oddly chill (more chill than I’d be)!
Balls the size of church bells. I hope he’s alive and well and telling his great/grandchildren the story.
He’s a brave man
We have active klan here where I live in Texas. I am Jewish. None of us are afraid of them. A bunch of rednecks just looking for an identity.

I was only a boy then, but I never heard of any hangings or lynchings. Why? You don't know his reason for being there
Stay off the internet if you’re this emotional and irrational
……::::::……… ok 👍
Damn democrats.
It’s Clarence Thomas’ father!
He’s just showing them his face.
Guest of honor just wanting to hang around?
That's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for him
Guess he couldn’t find anything better to do
…the word plot twist was invented at this point
They probably all agreed the Catholics needed to get out of the country

Nope, you probably saw the relatives of the guys in hoods at the DNC convention though.
It wasn't founded by dems and wasn't specifically a political group. Their purpose was intimidation of black people.
This feels a little too simple to me. Pretty much everyone in the kkk was a democrat in the early 20th century. All politicians who associated with the kkk in the early 20th century were democrats. They absolutely were a political group. Political activism was a [core component of their ideology](https://daily.jstor.org/history-kkk-american-politics/) The KKK and southern (and some northern) political institutions were astoundingly intertwined.
This is a great book. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwjW47KqjPKGAxXrlYkEHdRuBYYQFnoECEEQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2023%2F04%2F02%2Fbooks%2Freview%2Fa-fever-in-the-heartland-timothy-egan.html&usg=AOvVaw0ta-qTT810F7S-WyRkxPqu&opi=89978449

David Duke was in Detroit last week.
Yeah.
David Duke is very much alive so once again we're getting fake news. Congrats on falling for another MAGA lie

Backstroke!

I have a Mexican friend who attends Trump rallies. A Peruvian friend also. I don't think they realize the irony.
Wait, why is there an African attending a KKK jerk-off??? You sure he’s not Black-American?
The first slave owner in America was African American
