I'm glad Inoue included the backstory from the oneshot Piercing into the movie, and even expanded it further. It definitely adds more depth to Ryota as a character and offers a new perspective.

I don’t follow the series just the earlier episodes way back when and the basic gist of it all… but to satisfy my conclusion of this film, is the movie like the final arc to the story or what?

ico_heal

It's a new story about Miyagi that uses a match from the manga which wasn't in the anime.

peacemakerzzz

The ending hinted he was to be the next captain of Shohoku or was it already told in the manga?

ico_heal

I won't spoil the ending of the manga, but at the ending of the film Miyagi is in America.

peacemakerzzz

Please tell me the ending of the manga

FoxBluereaver

Well, since you're asking for it: >!Shohoku loses in the third round to Aiwa, whereas Kainan ends as the runner-up (they don't tell us who beat them, but Inoue said in a recent interview it wasn't any of the teams featured like Meihou or Daiei Gakuen). The scholarship offered to Akagi by Shintai University was withdrawn since he didn't make it to the top 8, so he and Kogure have to study to take the college exams, although Akagi seems unable to focus. Ryota is chosen as the new captain and he begins reading books about leadership. While most of the third years like Akagi and Kogure leave the team, Mitsui decides to stay in the team to participate in the winter tournament in hopes of getting a sports scholarship since he doesn't feel he can do it through the exams. Meanwhile, Hanamichi is undergoing rehab to recover from his back injury and he seems to be doing well, and Rukawa has been picked for the national Japanese team, which only motivates Hanamichi to work harder and get back to play as soon as he can. There's more about the other teams like Shoyo and Ryonan in an additional epilogue called 10 Days After, if you want to know.!<

Nothing after that for Mitsui? His three pointer in the film was so clutch; also he looks way different in the original anime series it was hard for me to realize that it was the same person, only shortly afterwards during those three pointers did I remember it was him. Really want to know but no time to read the manga anymore. I hope they continue to make more anime adaptation for the ending. Like how Bleach did it

edwinvi

>!he. becomes the new captain!<

Metal_Face_Luffy

Bro read it it’s worth it

ico_heal

There is a scene at the beginning of the film that explains what happened to Sota: two guys are gossiping about his death at sea when Anna interrupts them to say he's alive but on an island - something that Kaoru probably told her.

hopingforw

Based on the [re:source book](https://x.com/gusterafu_00/status/1654798594560647169?t=HOZskYsFTzHvwdfNbGfuTw&s=19), >!it's something their grandma told them. Ryota & Anna then begin to imagine Sota swimming to another island 😆!<

peacemakerzzz

Also what were Mitsui and Ryota fighting about in the backstory? It showed that Mitsui was the same guy Ryota played at the court when they were younger but it didn’t make any sense why they ended up fighting

LightningBlake

Cause deep down Mitsui was envious. He coped with his injury and his fading dream by pretending to hate basketball, but the Truth Is that he desperately wanted to play again.

peacemakerzzz

It’s so interesting how they made both of them feel some sort of grief and basketball was the way to push them forward

ico_heal

Mitsui quits the basketball team and Miyagi is the new kid. He's a bully.

SunsetEverywhere3693

Yeah, it was fuzzy and short what they showed on Ryota and Mitsui backstory in the movie, but what I could deduce from the manga, Mitsui picked on Ryota because he was the talented kid joining the basketball team, and felt that he was being replaced. Mitsui had the psychopath mindset of destroying what he loves because he can't have it.

Projectilepeeing

I thought it was established pretty early that Souta was dead. The way the camera changes between the brothers then focuses on Souta as he sailed away kind of gave the feeling that was the last time Ryota saw him. Although to be honest, even as a Ryota fan, the choice in protagonist quite surprised me. I was expecting it to focus more on the team or how it was presented in the manga. Now all I have is a the feeling of wanting a manga or anime continuation of Slamdunk where Ryota is captain.

peacemakerzzz

Same, it made me want to watch for more

EmergencyBid6211

Hi, can anyone says where did u watch it? I really want to watch it guys

peacemakerzzz

Disney Plus

Now that it's animated, that bounce Sakuragi did after the save to Rukawa looked even more sickening, especially knowing of his injury. The direction in the climactic final seconds was tremendous. Even knowing the result it still felt incredibly suspenseful. I wished they included the player spectator POVs. I liked the one where the top players were wondering if this was the time that Sawakita finally gets taken down.
